The theatrical poster design is a direct reference to the graphic novel, Sandcastle, which inspired this film. It's from a moment in which a character tells a tale about "a strange old man who had half of everything: half a head, half a body, and half of his arms and legs." Old (2021) marks the first time M. Night Shyamalan has filmed entirely outside Greater Philadelphia since his first film Praying with Anger (1992). However, Guy and Prisca mention that Philadelphia is where they live. The film is an adaptation of a 2010 graphic novel by writer Pierre Oscar Lévy and artist Frederik Peeters called Sandcastle. When asked what inspired him to adapt the book to film, director M. Night Shyamalan explained: "The book gave me the opportunity to work through a lot of anxieties I had around death and aging, and things like my parents getting older." Near the end, the notebook they find that contains a written possible theory and other victims' names is said to have belonged to a science fiction writer. This is a direct reference to the graphic novel wherein the main character that comes up with theories for their unusual situation is a science fiction writer.
Definitely entertained with this one, despite some major flaws. One huge screenwriting mistake Shyamalan constantly makes is including personal things from his life into the movie without any context whatsoever. For example, the Jack Nicholson/Marlon Brando dialogue was something Shyamalan’s dad would often ask, due to his dementia. But in the movie it just comes across as unintentionally funny
Old was the first ever movie I watched where I read the book first and I most say even though I enjoyed the film I do think Sandcastle was better. I liked a lot of things M Night did but there was a couple things I disliked. Overall it was a decent watch and not one of his worst for sure.
How is the Ending a Twist Ending? I genuinely don't get it, they were always being recorded, one of the characters literally say there's a camera recording them. Then they explain what was going on, they were experimenting on people, taking advantage of their various diseases to try out medicine. Where's the twist.
This was hands down my biggest disappointment of the year, I was so excited for it because I thought it looked great but sadly it wasn’t very good, all the actors in it do a good job, especially considering that on top of having to give convincing emotion they also have to act as little kids inside older kids’ bodies, and yeah, this is just a fantastic idea that M Night Shaymalan does take advantage of in parts, there’s some really disturbing scenes in this movie in regards to the body horror, in particular something that happens during the scene where the daughter becomes pregnant, there was something that happened during that scene that made me go “Oh my god did they really just go there?” I’d say it’s probably the most gruesome movie M Night Shaymalan has ever made, (I’m not really counting The Happening since all the violence in that movie was funny and not disturbing) Unfortunately the movie as whole didn’t really work for me, I think the biggest issue is that it felt like a movie that M Night Shaymalan didn’t fully think through before he decided to green light it, because for a large portion of the movie it felt totally directionless, characters just kinda wander around, talk and then every once in a while something plot relevant will happen, so it made the majority of the movie just feel like filler, I also wasn’t a fan of the twist ending, not only does it feel like something totally ridiculous that belongs in an entirely different genre but also when they try to explain the reasoning for why all of this was going on I thought it didn’t make any sense whatsoever, they’re doing this one thing in order to apparently get this other thing but it just made me go “How the hell would doing this possibly help with that?” It again felt like Shaymalan had a basic idea that he didn’t fully think through yet but decided to move forward with anyways, so yeah, I was really let down by this movie, which is a shame because like I said there’s some really admirable elements in it, but the majority of it felt like it was totally directionless, the twist ending and the reason why it’s there is too far reaching to feel like it works, there’s some admirable gutsiness in this movie but unfortunately as a whole I just don’t think it worked. 4/10

I knew what the twist was gonna be 20 mins into the movie and also I don’t really like how they brought up they could try to take one step like every hour so they don’t pass out but they never even try to do that
There were some things I absolutely frickin loved (like the scene at night with the family on the beach) but there were other things that were absolutely horribly done and unnecessary.
