  • After the worst day we could have imagined on our Great Loop adventure....We are enjoying our three days tied to a dock in Fairhope, AL while we wait to get hauled out and start the repair process. We are having a great time with our friends on Dreamer, until we find out that things are WAY worse than we thought!

Missed this leg somehow; you wisely chose open water. Not the same circumstances but been there and done that during our coastal sailing days. Superb helmsmanship getting into the haulout slip! Always enjoyed flying into the Gulf Shores Airport and the opportunity for a "business" lunch at Lulu's.

"business lunch " at Lulu's......Perfect! That slip to haul out was about as tight as it gets! We were pretty nervous lol. Surrounded by million dollar sport fishing boats....yikes!

Wow! I’m not sure I could have stayed and relaxed for 2 days but we understand making phone calls and making sure you have the right mechanic for the job.
Watching you pull into the sling was a HUGE relief! That is when I finally relaxed and was able to breathe.
So glad you made it safe! So glad you had her fixed and looking forward to more of your adventures!
We actually had a point in time where one of our options was to junk or scrap our boat and we chose to fix it. I know how special our boats are and how important it is when we choose to fix and continue loving them! Thanks again for sharing with us!

It was really tough. The looming of what was next made it so hard to relax, and truly enjoy the area, but we loved Fairhope! Dealing with the insurance, and jumping through all the hoops was maddening! So glad your story worked out for you guys too! Thank you for watching and sharing your story! :)

It's a testament to how well built she is. To sustain that level of damage and still be water tight is fairly remarkable. You guys did well bringing her into a narrow inlet and maneuver her the way you did was an achievement considering the damage. Well done indeed. It is said, a true test of one's character is how they act when things are at their worst.
I truly hope there comes a day to shake your hand perhaps over dinner or an adult beverage. You truly seem to be remarkable people.

Hey sorry you all are having to deal with the damage to your boat. My wife and I look forward to watching you guys every week, as it inspires us to do the great loop in 3 years. We will be starting from Ohio, pretty similar journey as you all. Your calm positive attitude has been amazing! Through the good and tough times you always have such an uplifting disposition. We vacationed there at Gulf Shores several times, LuLu's is such a great place to eat and hang out at, so is Tacky Jacks and Fort Morgan down the road at the end of the peninsula (may make a good UA-cam show if you're looking for content while you're there).

With reference t”pushing the engines “…sorry I didn’t articulate my concerns very well .
Try # 2…I would have been concerned about all the related parts past the coupling of the reduction gear (and that bearing as well )
Stuffing box ,cutlass bearing and the attached fiberglass structure …vibration is a killer on fiberglass .
I hope you will list what was damaged….

I am very sorry for what happened to your boat. I follow numerous loopers and this is the first time I've seen such a big hit. If I don't understand it wrong, it happened in a section with a lot of traffic for barges and pleasure boats. How has it been possible? Based on the damage observed, it must have been a rock! I don't think a semi-submerged log can cause so much damage! Did the depth sounder indicate nothing? What can be learned for the future and avoid these situations? Good luck with the repair and many memories from Spain.

    • @cruisingandromeda
      @cruisingandromeda  4 місяці тому

Thank you Joe! Great questions! We will bever know for sure what we hit. I am pretty sure it was a log or a stump, it may have been a rock but all the other boats somehow missed it. Nothing on the depth sounder, no other indications. There is a theory among boaters that with low water levels, objects previously settled on the bottom are being stirred up and floating around. Good question William....not really. The temps and pressures were all well below any "pushing" threshold. The RPM's were using were far from anything extreme for these big Cummins.
We wanted to make sure we were making way and not fighting current and wind, which will drive up what we need from the engines...so we found a sweet spot where the engines sounded really smooth and happy and all the gauges backed that up.

Thank you for commenting Grant. Any other day we may have had the lead and Dreamer would be following....or somedays it a large group/ flotilla following each other....maybe 5 or 6 boats. I appreciate your approach and agree with philosophy of be your own leader....but speed and following someone just are not part of the equation here.. thanks anyway though! Thanks for following along!

What a bugga, bit more than the duct tape required...sorry for you guys. I does beg the question as to why over there with so many talk of floating debris in the waterway and IPS drive now so popular..... a mistake I think, could you imagine the damage. I think your drive system saved much more drama that could have been. Take care and be safe. 🫣🍻🍻🫶

Great comment Mark! There is a theory that due to low water levels the river traffic, especially the powerful barges are churning debris that has been dormant or stable on the bottom. Just something I have heard a few times...not sure. Thank you very much for following along, we appreciate it!
