I think your reading of “cinnamon bun” books is a good thing because it sets the example for the rest of us that it is okay to take a step back from “serious” books for mental health reasons. Some of us (i.e. myself) need to be reminded of that. It’s a way of coping and resetting when, like you say, the world is on fire. I’m right there with you!
I appreciate that!
People that leave terrible comments on your channel perk up my motherly protective instinct. How dare they be that way to you! I'll echo my grandmother's sage advice " if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." Keep up the great video content. We love your content, cinnamon bun reads included.
My grandmotherly adage to all this is....."don't let the bastards get you down " keep up sharing ALL your thoughts
@@Wordsandsong844 I think I would like your grandmother. 😄
I appreciate that! Grandmas can have the best wisdom.
Your channel, your content! The unpleasant comments you mentioned are an example of just one of the many problems in this country right now - lack of civility/bad manners! As my wise mother liked to say, don’t let the turkeys get you down! ❤
I appreciate that!
Thank you for acknowledging that this year is extremely stressful, for sharing your cinnamon bun defence, and especially for reminding everyone why they need to vote.
Thank you! I feel like those things all matter to the people who need to hear them, so I'll keep on saying them. Especially since it's true for me.
I love that you are an authentic voice and share all the books you enjoy. Like with other podcast I enjoy not every book you read will be my cup of tea but I don't listen to a podcast to be an echo chamber. I like listening to those who have different life experiences to mine and how that may impact on the books they love . Currently trying to decide if my next read will be The memory police by Yoko Ogama or I who have never known men by Jacqueline Harpman
I appreciate that so much--thank you! I hope you're enjoying whichever book you chose.
I don’t comment often but just wanted to say I throughly enjoy your entire videos. I appreciate that you share authentic discussions about the books YOU find interesting even though we don’t always share the same taste. And thank you for continuing to remind everyone how important it is to vote this year.
I really appreciate that! Thank you so much.
I'm sorry you've been receiving negative comments! I just wanted to let you know that I think your videos are a delight! You're my favorite source for all things books these days, and I've been loving the content this summer.
I appreciate that!
It doesn’t matter what you read as long as you get enjoyment. If I had not discovered your channel I would never have picked up a Matt Cain book from my library today. Cannot wait to read it.
I hope you like it! And thank you.
I support the right to read cinnamon bun books!😁
🧁 pretend it's a cinnamon bun LOL
I support the right to read any book that makes you feel good.
@@annegibson6072 🥰
@@marciajohansson769 😄 UA-cam really needs to give us a cinnamon bun emoji.
Thank you!
I am fighting a serious illness with the Veterans Administration. I love your book talks and thought "cinnamon bun" books an excellent idea for me right now. I looked through my library and found one.
This is my favorite you tube channel…don’t change a thing. Haters gonna hate. Thank goodness you read cinnamon bun books mixed in with the heavier ones. I’m so happy to have someone with empathy read good books and realistically comment. And I loved Just for the Summer too. Can’t wait for your commentary on the NYT best list.
Thank you so much! The NYT video posted this morning and I feel like I could have said a lot more. I also loved Just for the Summer and can't wait to read more Jimenez!
Love your channel and videos Greg!
I appreciate that!
I loved Shuggie Bain so I am adding Hombrecito to my TBR!
I just finished Sandwich this morning and I loved it! It made me laugh and cry, not many books make me do both. I’m currently vacationing at a cottage in PEI (a more affordable Canadian version of Cape Cod) that I have been renting with my family since my oldest was born, so the location of where I read the book had similar vibes to the location where the story takes place. I think that probably added to the reading experience
Sandwich was a really interesting and compulsively readable book. And how fun to read it while also on a vacation!
love all your videos! keep on keeping on 👏👏
Thanks so much!
I'm picking up A Dash of Salt and Pepper from the library on Monday. Thanks for the recommendation!
I hope you like it!
🤗- that’s for little Greg 💚
Thank you!
Thank you Greg for making videos❤ I mainly read classics and my guilty pleasure is romance novels- I find the predictability of romance novels comforting, so I can relate. I listen to Rom-commers and Jenny James is not a disaster this year, both fun and can recommend to you. Happy summer!
Happy summer! There is definitely joy to be found in romance books--and many of them address serious issues. I think a lot of people (too many, really) dismiss that.
@@SupposedlyFun thank you for your comment. At the end of rom commers audiobook, the author discusses exactly this point, how romantic comedy is not viewed as worthy and how untrue that is. I wholeheartedly agree- we are all adults here, and strive to make the most enjoyable experience 😀 we need to stop judging others, as well as judging ourselves. Why did I say romance was my guilty pleasure? 🤔 I just need to say what I like as they are without guilt 😃
@@eusaypdx Amen to all that!
Hi Greg! Abby Jimenez is my favorite cinnamon bun author! I put aside it on Libby a while back and I still have 9 weeks to wait. I’m thinking about buying it too.
I hadn't realized that Just for the Summer is part of a series--or that Jimenez has so many books! Now I have a lot to catch up on. Which is great!
Come back to Ireland. It’s currently 17 degrees. Little or no sunshine. You could wear your Aran sweaters.
That would be great!
Oh my gosh thank you!!!! I have had so many problems with Thriftbooks. I don't understand how they confuse hardcover and paperbacks. It's so frustrating 😡
I'm glad I'm not alone!
Hi Greg! I am similar to you, heavy book, lighter read , good self-care always, self awareness on how I am feeling will mirror my reading !! Love listening to your book reviews, those that post negative comments probably not here for the right reasons, make it simple, move on from that comment to a genuine one !
Thank you! Oddly, since I published this video there hasn't been a single negative comment. I'm loving it while it lasts! 🎊 🎉
You don’t need me or anyone to tell ya , but read wtf you wtf you want ! Your channel name says all ! I appreciate you 📖🪱💚
Thanks--I appreciate you as well!
Good morning. Reading The Secret Life of Albert Enwhistle . I have had this book for awhile. I am really enjoying it. Thank you for pointing this book out.
We have had an extended series of 90 plus days on the east coast. Going outdoors is not an option at this time.
I am so glad you're enjoying Albert Entwhistle! It's such a sweet and kind book.
Do you have air conditioning in your house? 100 degrees is hard to take! We have only window a/cs here in NYC but I couldn't live without that respite from the heat. Excited to hear your take on the NYC list! Sorry about the jerky comments. I started Sandwich on a travel day from NYC to Las Vegas and finished it that day! So good and made the flights go quick. Just finished reading "Year of Wonders" by Geraldine Brooks and LOVED it.
There's no central air in most houses where I live. We're lucky because a giant tree in front of our house provides a lot of shade that keeps the house from heating up to unbearable levels (but it also dumps a lot of leaves in the fall). We have fans out in the house and a window unit in our bedroom because neither of us would be able to sleep in heat. We're also lucky because the downstairs is usually significantly cooler. I really need to catch up to Year of Wonders!
Looking forward to Hombrecito.
I hope you like it!
Some people just suck, I just don’t understand what they think they’re accomplishing with negative, insulting comments. Do they feel good about themselves after? How do they justify it? I’m furious for you, and so sorry you have to deal with it. You’re fabulous, cinnamon bun books and all. ❤
I was one of the people who mentioned (a couple of times) that I was sure you’d love Hombrecito. So glad I was right! It was one of the few books I’ve ever bought after having read the ARC, because I know I’ll want to read it again someday.
Thank you for the support. I actually thought about picking up a copy of Hombrecito as well because I feel guilty when I love a book I didn't pay for--but they were sold out! Maybe at some point I'll pick one up.
When I sae the NY great books I was excited to see if you will make comment on it. Also if I suspect correctly the reason you don't have barcode on the book is because it is self printed. This means some just decided to print copies of the books and sell for original so they can speculate the price. I'm from Europe and this is actually often way people to speculate market for rere books.
That could be it! Someone in my Pulitzer Discord said it may be a book club edition, but pirated copies would make sense.
I tagged Hombrecito on Libby, hope the library gets it. And Sandwich is on a 25 week hold! I am hard on myself when I very occasionally read cinnamon bun books, thinking about all of the lit fic I need to get to!
And I enjoy your chattiness, it’s as if we were in the room with you!
Thank you! I didn't mention it in this video, but I feel like a lot of people discount cinnamon bun books--but they can have a lot of great content about life, relationships, etc. For instance: Just for the Summer is a brilliant novel about relationships, trust, and trauma. Anyone who discounts it because it's in the romance novel is missing out on that.
Changing reading tastes and the world affecting your reading moods is totally reasonable, it sucks you are getting negativity. Though every negative comment hits harder and can be difficult to get out of your head, I do imagine its probably like less than. 1% of your viewership, so just be reminded the other 99.99999....% of us value you for whatever you want to share. I'm struggling with a lot of the same general and national dread looming, and have likewise really leaned into fluff more than usual.
I can't recall if I commented about it already, but if not I've recently read Love & Saffron because of Joel and your reccomendation. It was fantastic and so much more than I expected from such a short work!
If you havent, you should check out Jackie Lau romances! I know you read less straight romance but all of her work has more layered romance with depth, and super full of great food and cultural identity that I've noticed is something that seemingly draws you toward them.
Well I just finished Just for the Summer and loved it, so maybe I'm having a straight romance Renaissance. 😂 Thanks for the recommendation! You are right that the negative comments are FAR outweighed by positive, but they somehow manage to hit harder. And I'm so glad you liked Love and Saffron!
Hi there! We have a hard cover edition of Shipping News if you're still interesting in procuring that one...Just let us know! Love your videos. We just discovered you yesterday!
That's so kind of you! I actually found a hardcover of The Shipping News right after this video, and within a month finished my hardcover collection. Thank you for the offer, and for watching.
Just finished Sandwich and I have mixed feelings. Interested in your final take on it! Also now I'm hungry for cinnamon buns. 😊
Cinnamon buns are always good! 😂 I also have some mixed feelings about Sandwich, but I lean toward the positive. I'll have a lot more in this week's Friday Reads.
What the heck? People should move on if they don’t like your content. I love it! If you’re not terrified you’re under a rock.
Thank you!
“Hombrecito” is such a moving book; one that leaves a lasting impression. Santiago Jose Sanchez is a talented debut novelist. I, too, wondered if the book has autobiographical elements.
I can't wait to see what they publish next. What a promising debut.
I like your cinnamon bun books!! Keep reading and ignore the hate! Speaking of cinnamon bun gay romance, I’m reading the Heartstopper series this summer and it’s delightful! Very “young love” friendly and wholesome! I’m glad there is this out there for young folks now!
The Heartstopper series is so good!
I have a feeling that those paperbacks were published by the Quality Paperback Book Club, which i believe no longer exists. BTW, you should read what you want. A love the diversity of readings!
Someone in my Pulitzer Discord group suggested the same thing about the paperbacks--I think it makes a lot of sense. And thank you!
OMG I just finished Sandwich today! Thought it was going to be a fluffy beach vacation read. Definitely was not, but handled in a way that wasn’t burdensome to me. I loved it! A surprising female pov I haven’t really encountered before.
I do kind of love that Sandwich allows Rocky to be a complex, frequently infuriating person who has a lot of open and honest reactions to her body and the world around her.
Also reading “Sandwich”❤ Don’t read it when you’re hungry…a lot of great food descriptions esp. if you love seafood!
Book twins😊!
PS Just for the Summer is next for me😉
The food descriptions in Sandwich were so fun. I finished Just for the Summer yesterday and loved it--I hope you do, too!
That is a print on demand book, possibly pirated (I know because it happens sometimes when I order in China).
So far the feedback has all been that it's either an old book club book or a pirated book. I can't figure out which one!
I love your channel. Please keep doing what you are doing and ignore the ignorant haters ❤
Thank you so much!
You can read whatever you like. I'm fighting a cold this week and all I'm reading are middle-grade graphic novels and picture books. Actually I feel I need to stop reading for a while and rest until I recover.
Those can be great books to read! My sister reads a lot of middle grade books because of her daughters. Feel better!
My only objection to you talking about cinnamon bun books is that it makes me crave cinnamon buns!!
Stay cool, Greg! 😎
😂 🥂
Just for Summer is one of my favourite books of the year too. I related so much to Emma and Justin is such a good character and I loved the family included.
I finished it yesterday and it felt really profound. When people discount cinnamon bun books, they really miss out because books like this are so impactful.
I am NOT a romance reader but happened upon the audiobook of Only For The Summer on UA-cam (for free!) I loved it so much. The audiobook readers were really good, especially the Justin voice. I don't know if I would have gotten as hooked on it by reading it.
I really liked the narrators! It looks like the Justin voice (co-)narrates a lot of Jimenez's books.
Shuggie Bain is on my bookshelf, waiting to be read. If I enjoy it, I may give Hombrecito a try. Right now I'm reading Our Lady of Babylon by John Rechy, which I'm having a good time with, as the writing is beautiful.
I've only read one book by Rechy and would like to try another someday.
Thriftbooks have told me they do not acrively monitor books for sale posts however they will refund if you call customer service. My friends tell me Alibris is the same. How frustrating!
They've always been good about refunds at Thriftbooks, but I've also had some of their representatives chide me for not being careful about what I order--even though they can't point to anything in the posting that would have indicated that I was ordering the wrong thing. Honestly, that's the thing that really annoyed me. 😂
I’m really digging The Rabbit Hutch by Tess Gunty…
I loved that book so much!
That was a good book!
Oops. 😳 I think it was me who commented saying I had left my favorite books list on your previous video. Well, I know I did that, not considering you have other things to do in life besides answer UA-cam comments. I will check my privilege 😉 and remember we are sharing you with a lot more people than we did a couple of years ago.
As far as cinnamon bun books go, I have my own version of that with crime books, whether cute cozy crime or the full-bore stuff. It’s just usually easier to wrap my brain around that kind of thing than serious litfic. I end up reading some of the cinnamon bun books you and Joel recommend, but I do love hearing about them all!
So, I just put Sandwich and Just For The Summer on my list. Not sure if you’ve gotten this far in Sandwich yet, but the audio sample in Libro is a clip about Rocky and her friend discussing Rocky’s trip to the GYN and it’s hilarious! That was enough to convince me.
I’m currently reading The Betrayal of Thomas True, historical fiction set in 1715 London about the so-called “molly houses” of the day. I am loving it so far. Font is a bit small for me and that is holding me up a bit, but I think I’m going to end up loving it when I’m done. Then I have Martyr!, but there’s a new crime book out on Tuesday and I’m sure that will be my next read.
Kisses to Teddy! 🤎🖤
I appreciate your content so much, Greg (and Joel and Teddy). It brings me much joy. Hope you know how much bookish, puppy, foodie, travel love you are supplying! 💜
I actually wasn't thinking of you specifically about the missed comments! There have been a bunch of instances where it's happened. Please don't worry--it's totally fine to let me know that I missed something.
It is interesting how some people escape to crime books or very dark literature, and others (like me) need more positive escapism. People are so different!
I finished Sandwich over the weekend and found it compulsively readable.
Thank you so much for all of the support!
I started my Pulitzer collection but decided to do it in paperback. I don't know why......I think I thought it would be easier, and more frugal. But either way it's been fun.
Paperback would definitely be an easier way to go, so my recommendation is to be as unlike me as possible. 😂
@SupposedlyFun well that might be taking it a little bit too far. I find that lots our thinking aligns in other areas but I do agree that paperback in this instance might be the easy route LOL. You are quite inspiring overall! 😀
@@jennrecord2784 Thank you! I appreciate that!
I have been reading sooo many cinnamon bun romances because it's just been a harder year. I'm a big believer in no pretentiousness when it comes to reading
I agree 100%
Better World Books has several copies of the Shipping News. They are great prices, like $5-$6. I get a lot of used books that way. I agree with you that the world is on fire and your anxiety is showing that you care. I wish all of these responders realized that the world IS on fire and they need to pay attention. You read whatever makes you get through this.
The day I filmed this, I found a hardcover of The Shipping News for $10. It arrived today, and it's a real hardcover! In good condition! I'm so happy. And thank you for the support.
I loved Hombrecito. I am confident that there’s a lot of autobiographical references.
I'm willing to bet there are!
Wait.., you’re saying I DONT have to watch your videos? 😂 Thats alright, I like them so I’ll keep watching. It’s not a difficult decision 😊
😂 😂 😂 I appreciate that!
You read whatever you want. I'm reading a fantasy book at the moment which is not my genre but I needed something different before the Booker longlist comes out with the literary fiction again. I often go to a crime novel for a palate cleanser. I also don't know why people need to leave offensive comments, I guess they have sad lives.
That's a smart diversion before the Booker longlist comes out. I gave up on understanding people a long time ago, but I appreciate the support!
Honey, you read what you’re drawn to. It’s part of what makes this interesting! And…right there with you in the election stress. Yeesh. Hug!
Thank you so much!
Being Unwell I’ve been soothing myself with romance & thrillers. So far I’ve read

A Dash of Salt & Pepper
Leading Man
The only other book I’ve finished is

I’ve just finished the audio of

Yes to videos about lists! Thriftbooks has done me dirty a few times but I still use them sometimes. I also find a lot on eBay. I haven't tried Alibris but I'll check it out. Seriously, someone bitched about the cinnamon buns!? Block, delete, pass the cinnamon buns. I'm interested in Sandwich.
It's happened to me enough that I try to avoid using Thriftbooks unless I don't really care which edition/format of a book I'll end up getting.
Omg I have the same issue with ThriftBooks. I really dislike library copies! Luckily their customer service is really good and has never given me an issue with fixing the problem.
It's been a relief that they have been really great about refunds, but I've had a couple of customer service reps try to shame me for ordering the "wrong thing" even though they can't show me where I would have made a mistake. Oh well!
I definitely line up with your more general fiction but I couldn’t imagine the gall of people telling people what they should read.
People are always going to people, I guess.
I've given up on Thriftbooks. I received a "good" heavily annotated library discard copy of a Thomas King book that had "Is this the same Coyote?!?" Scrawled across a page in highlighter. Now it's an inside joke for me whenever it seems like a trickster God is up to shenanigans in my life. I hold the line on diversity working in a library by asking people who are bigots for a specific incident or person in their life. Oh you do know a trans person? They run a tugboat and are actually awesome? Well then. Speak to what you personally know or out you go.
I love that!
I would advise blocking those people who put hate comments in your Channel. You cannot please everyone.
Amen to that! Thank you.
jsut a couple random notes- I have NEVER been offended if a comment I've sent to a creator doesn't even get a 'like' let alone a response... breathe, you're awesome.
two, I'm not sure if this is printed in the books. I only know because a college friend of mine was the first person to rave about" check, please" as I still haven't read despite being a hockey fan. But it started out as a webcomic, not a graphic novel. (friend was reading it as it was released online) I'm not sure if that might have something to do with the pacing early on, but thought i'd share that tidbit.
That would make a lot of sense--the chapters are like short bursts that don't always feel super connected. Thanks!
I read Sandwich a week or two ago. I enjoyed the book, but the mom was a lot. I didn’t really find her likeable . Otherwise this video made me feel angry about people leaving mean comments. I love all of your videos, and all of your choices. It was like the people saying they don’t like the chatting . It’s your channel. They don’t have to watch . Uggh. Angry you have to read negative comments like that.
Rocky is a fascinating character because I found myself alternately empathizing with her and feeling infuriated by her. But the book was compulsively readable! Thank you so much for the kind words. I appreciate that!
My post may get deleted, but I hope it won't.
It's a, "You knew and you didn't say anything?" situation for me:
Dan McClellan, PhD.
He is a Bible scholar and has videos here on UA-cam and on TikTok. Yes, he does speak to the Leviticus 18:22 passage, I hope you will find his remarks as interesting as I do should you care to watch.
Please check out what Dan has to say before passing judgement, his message is positive for homosexuals, not so much for folks who use the Bible to justify their hate and prejudice.
I've always thought that how people interpret the Bible (and which parts they deem more important than others) says more about the person.
Maybe you could have Joel or a friend go through your comments first and then you don't have to deal with the negativity, and it would make responding to comments a better experience. We all need book candy sometimes. I watch a lot of booktubers whose taste I don't like at all just because I enjoy their personality.
That's not a bad suggestion--thank you. I also feel like the channels I follow most closely have more to do with the person than what they read.
I think they should of asked readers what was the best book, not authors. As for mean comments, wait till you get to be my age, 72, I don't give a damn what any one says or thinks anymore...haha
I can't wait for that feeling to hit me! I do like that they're now asking readers to submit ballots for a later post.
I never understand why people watch a video and then complain about what you are reading - as if you owe them anything for making ideos. My reading for months now has been increased escapism, thus more fantasy and romantasy than literary and I can tell that in my views, but the comments luckily don't reflect that. Hope stupid people keep quiet in your comments. Enjoy your escapism books.
I appreciate that--thank you!
With regards to Leviticus, the Hebrew Bible and what Christians call the Old Testament is a fascinating document but it’s also full of strange rules. For example it seems that maybe creatures of the sea are supposed to be fish and if they’re not we shouldn’t eat them. Hence, shellfish are prohibited. And since heterosexuality seems to be the norm, homosexuality is against the rules. I’m not a biblical scholar but that’s kind of my take on it and the interesting thing about it is that it’s not even really very deep. Beyond that of course, any religion is supposed to be pointing us towards ultimate reality which is about pure love peace and understanding and obviously that is beyond any particular sexual orientation.
I've always thought that interpretations of the Bible (especially which parts are most important) reveal more about the person doing the interpreting than anything else.
I can’t believe you’re choosing to read the books you want to read and not what certain viewers want you to read! 😂 Please do whatever you need to do. Read the books you want to read when you want to read them. Life is too short to feel like you need to tailor your reading to the wishes of other people. You could read a cereal box and I’d still be here.
Amen to that! And thank you.
Mean people ruin EVERYTHING! Did you paraphrase Facts of Life???
I definitely accidentally did. 😂
