A mk1 focus is my first car and I’m learning everything I know about cars from fixing up mine, and whenever there’s something you cover I’m immediately psyched since I know it’s gonna be just what I need and then some. The pcv valve does not actually go directly into the crankcase... There is a baffled air oil separator that the pcv valve goes into, located under the exhaust manifold and behind the catalytic converter. This air oil separator is the part of the pcv system that clogs the most easily, as oil crust builds up in those baffles over time. The separator bolts onto the crankcase and lets the vaporized oil condense and flow back into the crankcase. Definitely something that should be mentioned when talking about a zetec focus pcv system, but overall an excellent video!

    • @Horus_Works
      @Horus_Works  3 роки тому

      Thanks, you're totally right of course! Shame about that baffle being behind the exhaust system, otherwise it would have come off for a clean as well.

    I just bought a Ghia Mk1 (2.0 Zetec/auto) and combined with over filled oil, corroded plugs/poor combustion and a blocked PVC system the engine is sludgy black and retains a fuel smell in the oil despite flushing and an oil change. The oil cap has pressure behind it with the engine running.
    Trying to save the old girl since it is 20 years old this month.
    As a sub to this channel I came to revise the job and wanted to check the parts as I ordered a plastic valve but it is wrong. Excellent Mk1 advice here!

    • @Horus_Works
      @Horus_Works  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks a lot for the informative comment, Malcolm 👍
      Bad news indeed if there is pressure behind the cap - definitely could be a blocked PCV system. Have a look at the PCV baffle behind the exhaust manifold and see if it's blocked up. I haven't done this job myself yet, but I hear that this blockage can happen causing blow-by and main seal leaks. Let me know how you get along...

    Can you remember me on about cleaning that front box on the front of the engine actually where the PCV plugs into ? I think if they are cleaned out that would help the PCV valve stop getting blocked ?
    You can get a silicone hose for the crank pipe which is quit quick I got mine off ebay,
    Jubilee clip is aftermarket .

      Thanks David, helpful as always! I remember you asking about the baffle and taking it off. I decided to leave it on as it would have meant removing the exhaust. I may still get to it when/if I put headers on.

    Can you explain the stirring system of this ford focus? My Ford is stirring very bad lately, maybe i have to change the oil or pump? Thanks for your videos.

    • @Horus_Works
      @Horus_Works  3 роки тому

      Hi mate, it's a pretty simple system. There is a power steering pump that pushes fluid into the steering rack underneath the car, via a high pressure hose. That fluid then returns from the steering rack via another, low pressure hose back to a filler bottle, which is then connected to the power steering pump. If your steering is heavy, you may have a leak somewhere. It's easy to tell if you have a power steering leak, because the pump will make a noise. This is a sign that air is in the system. If you have no noise and no leaks, your fluid could need a change. If your fluid is good, and the power steering pump makes no noises, it can only be your steering rack underneath the car.

    • @turbo3492
      @turbo3492 2 роки тому

      @@Horus_Works You must use only Ford power steering fluid failure to do this will result in an early pump failure.Look inside the power steering reservoir the fluid should be a very dark greenish colour if it's anything else the damage is done as will be the seals in the steering rack. Hope this helps

    Horus, do you know why the fan switch sensor is tied to our battery boxes? I have been searching long and hard to understand this and still can only assume it's because later design radiators lack the hole to plug it in! Still concerns me over my radiator's effectiveness though.

    • @Horus_Works
      @Horus_Works  Рік тому +1

      Hi mate, it's because the temperature under our bonnets gets very high. The exhaust manifold sits right at the front of the engine bay, blowing hot air up and through the rest of the engine bay. This is also why your power steering line is covered in a heat shield. It sits right above the exhaust manifold, and it's probably why that plastic coolant pipe next to the hood latch cracks so often - heat. Ford stuck a temp sensor onto the battery box so that the fans can come on when the temp rises too high. The black bonnet liner attached to the underside of your bonnet is actually a fire suppressant blanket. If things catch fire, the plastic clips holding on the bonnet liner will melt off and let the liner fall onto the engine acting as a fire blanket. Hood vents are a really good idea on these cars... I've been doing some research into seeing what vents would work best. Anyway, that temp sensor is there to keep an eye on heat 👍

    • @jobeblogs4539
      @jobeblogs4539 Рік тому

      @@Horus_Works Super, I figured it was relocated out of the radiator, but could not find a location for it to go. My fans are not switching on currently. I unplugged the camshaft temperature sensor and they switched on full speed, so ordered the Lucas brand one which should arrive soon. Hopefully I can get the sensor out from underneath the car, otherwise the alternator has to come out! As for the information about the blanket, that's genius, who ever knew the Welsh education system could produce such clever car designers??

    Would a blocked pcv valve cause high oil consumption?

    • @Horus_Works
      @Horus_Works  2 роки тому +1

      A blocked PCV Valve may cause oil leaks, so check if you have oil leaks in that area. In effect this means that you are losing oil, but I wouldn't think that the oil lost would be a lot. So I wouldn't say that PCV valve could cause oil loss, but not high oil loss....

      Hey mate I'm well thanks for asking 🙂 As far as I know, the idle is controlled electronically through the computer. With the engine bay, I rejuvenated a few parts, and then I degrease the engine bay every 6 months or so. Also, when I wash the car, once I dry the body and wheels off, I pop the bonnet and wipe down the engine bay too with the same wet rag. This has helped a lot. Not a lot of effort but keeps things tidy. A lot of people are surprised when I tell them the car is 21 years old.

Many left and right hand drive parts are the same, it’s mainly the A/C lines+ Compressor, pulley sizes and the steering knuckles/front calipers (SVT/ST170) that are different. Also 5 acre Focus in the USA has a goid range of genuine parts although having a part nunber help as there may not be pictures.
