"unlike most forces of darkness, I don't proclaim allegiance to the Devil, I operate independently" - said as if it were the most matter-of-fact thing ever :D
for the record, the devil is ABOUT independence and individuality and freedom, its a christian/media/pop aesthetic or propaganda for it to be all depravity and murder and stuff. scuse me for being 'that guy' lol, but i just wanted to help dispel some misconceptions, since a lot of people dont realize a satanists POV. ^_- i know it was just a joke tho... especially when he said hell is 'ghastly.' PFEH. no accounting for taste. XD
Kier there are different sects of Satanism, Some believe in LaVayen Satanism ,which is the one that sounds the most like yours, Other believe in Theistic Satanism which see Satan as less of a symbol and more of an actual supernatural being worthy of praise. Most modern variations of Satanism see it as you do, but older versions are the more commonly known. Just know everything changes over time and with time came where you are now and your beliefs.
"We only exist this one time. We are bespoke, we are a luxury, we are exclusive. Then we transpire and in a fullness of time our live comes to an end." How poetic!
Gothique Zombie I want to be from Scotland and have pale skin and black hair and know all those things, but more than that, I want to captivate people with my vocabulary and the enunciation of my words -- film
My mother is Irish and I’ve inherited her very pale skin. I look pale as paper in photos and my skin doesn’t tan. I’ve often been told I look sickly and/or tired. One of my closest friends is Haitian and very very dark skinned. She was teased for her skin and was often recommended skin bleaching treatments. I think both our skin tones are lovely and that the world would be awfully boring if everyone had similar skin tones. This video is great.
Chloë Brisson its so sad to know that whereever we go around the world we’ll always be teased for having a ‘certain’ skin tone. Makes me realize that we shouldnt even care anymore lol 😂
Finally someome who doesn't call skin tones like 'black' or 'white' . These are VERY old terms, and do not represents the beautiful nature of the epidermis. And by political view, only insecure people will describe another by skin 'colour' (side note: black and white are shades) :)
Edit Debreceni him I agree with your comment, we must also look at the cultural use of terms. We must look at how people define their own skin color. Ultimately there are only three races in the human world...caucasoid, mongoloid and negroid. Of course there are many many shades within each race. I think it is most important to use the terms that people use themselves. In this day and age, for example, it would be quite offensive to most Asians to refer to them as mongoloid. I am Caucasian. White. Pale. Light. Whatever you want to call it, I'm just me and that is the brilliant point of this video. We "intelligent" humans can often over complicate things. ☮️
John, may I suggest that you collaborate with Nyma Tang. She has a very deep skin tone and I think it would be absolutely amazing if you both create film such a this one together.
ME TOO!!! Like I've said from the beginning, he reminds me of one of Anne Rice's Children of the Millennia from the Vampire Chronicles. John definitely needs his own installment.
I think he is a vampire, but not because of his skin tone. But because of the way he reminds me of the high class of the XVII century, and he speaks about World War Two like if it was a traumatic experience for him LOL
18:02 "I operate independently. Besides, on the few occasions that I have been to Hell, the decor is absolutely ghastly so I never really stay for long." YOU ARE HILARIOUS!
'Society's opinion is second-hand. The only thing one should ever accept that's second-hand is the crown jewels.' -John Maclean 2017 My new favorite quote xoxo
Love the message here, John. I am so glad you touched on the "gothic vampire" comments about you. It's a glamorization of extreme white skin. Or a negative judgement that you are inhuman. No other extreme skin coloration has a positive social acceptance unfortunately. Too "black", too "yellow, red, or brown often looked down upon. Skin bleaching is rampant in parts of the world, and it's dangerous and unhealthy.
I'm so in love with this. I'm a 16 year old living in America, and for the longest time, I've hated my dark skin. I even used to bleach as a child because I dreamed of having lighter skin. I thought I would have a better life if I had lighter skin. It wasn't until when I was 15 when I began acknowledging the beauty within my skin tone. I can say that the influence of dark skin women like Lupita, Viola, Nikki Perkins, Duckie Thot, and many more encouraged me to begin the journey of not only love for my skin, but also love for myself in general. 👏🏾Representation 👏🏾matters👏🏾. I love this video because it applies to all who have had a struggled relationship with their skin. I'm learning to love my own, and I hope others can begin to do the same. I'm not saying it's going to be easy, but it's definitely going to worth it. THANK YOU John.
The vampire humor in this is everything. Next time someone says this vampire thing to me, I'll have to tell them I've avoided the sun for 3,000 years and that's how I avoid premature aging 🤣
Emily Rachel Gilley oh my gosh I'll definitely have to do the same. It's so funny that people feel the need to make vampire jokes. To be fair though... I do look like a vampire.
Well I'm 30 and I do not. have. a single. line. on. my face. People address me with "kid". Once I state my age, all the jokes abruptly stop. Then I start to enthusiastically explain how much sun exposure sucks, how I drank and I smoked when I was younger, but that shit doesn't do nearly as much damage to the skin as sunbathing, and by the end of the conversation everyone looks like they chewed on something very sour :D
Am super dark, I never thought I would be a fan of a pale person just because I consider our experiences very different but, John you proved me wrong. I am learning a lot from you. you are amazing.new subscriber here.
just a quick PSA about damaging UV rays from the sun. When our skin is exposed to the sun without sunscreen or any protective barrier, the sun's rays are literally penetrating the skin and damaging our DNA which is how cancer cells form. Our skin warns us of this damage when we receive a tan/sunburn. Although it takes longer for people with darker skin to tan/burn it is imperative that anyone with skin wears sunscreen.
the other girl sort of got it right, but it has more to do with light physics than just "a protective barrier". The colour "white" is actually in fact a reflection of every visible colour that exists. Black on the other hand is the opposite, it is the absence of any light at all. White skin is going to attract and reflect light where as dark skin is going to absorb and not attract light.
You know when you have such an incredible, unbelievable experience and your whole being is just reacting involuntarily? I'm watching this and just getting my life in ways I never thought possible.
I saw my first video by him about two weeks ago. I always learn something, and this video in particular should go viral! Far too many people need to hear this message. The gods know he is getting me together, right quickly! Lol.
23:55 “we live in a world that has been structured under the rulership of fear. i believe that will change, and one day we will live in a world led by hope, led by thoughts, and led by ideas.”
As a student of political science and international affairs who couldn’t care less about make up, it is truly amazing to see somene talking about power structures and giving a sociological insight on this kind of topics. I would love to see more people talking abou this (there are many types of power who aren’t based upon... i could talk about this for ours, ill save you from that) I adore this person.
Hi Francisca 👋 I love your insight on John's talk here... BTW, I am intrigued by your family nama Ribeiro. Where are you originally from, if I may be informed? Your family name sounds so similar to my paternal grandmother's family name, which is Riberu... We're from Flores, Indonesia 😊
Effervvescent That's so true! I can literally see teenagers and adults with the vocabulary of a seven-year-old, and then I come to his videos to see such diligently written comments.
I also dislike how very pale or very dark is considered a "statement." I don't think it is bad that you can make a statement if you so choose, but I hate that being confident and walking into the world fully embracing your "extremity" aka "non-conformance" has to be some act of rebellion. It's almost like like a backhanded compliment.
Abby Sheeran you don't have to be promoting anything by just living xd (for example some people are telling fat people that are just posting their photos that they're promoting obesity) You have right to live and be happy in your body and you don't be pressured into representing any idea because it would be easier for people to understand the world
I am Black American and I go through years of lightening and darkening my skin. Ultimately, not accepting the implied cultural perception of darkness and lightness has freed me to just see my skin as canvas. I love my paleish yellow brown "true" skin tone and some times I will remove "sun damage"/tan but it's a lot of time and attention to maintain this base tone that inhibit my life. But getting into the sun and really pushing my skin I become the deepest shade of mahogany and while I love it, foundation colors are impossible to find but I don't need it. People in this day and age give me so much attention when I am dark. I never get insults like when I would darken as a teen. I've come to realize that for black people, but all sorts of people now their is this projecting of beauty on to me and other dark folks. It seems in the present life has gotten easier being darker where I live, I'm grateful for that. They are trying to unlearn skin tone bias and it's growing day by day.
When i was younger i always thought i was too dark skinned but with age ,knowledge ,personal growth and acceptance of myself im much more confident in my skin
shereen I absolutely LOVE dark skin tones. I have pale skin (not tan but not pale- if that makes sense) but I think dark skin shades are extremely beautiful and looks stunning. I love every skin tones because every skin shade is wonderful and is so nice to look at. But embrace your skin colour, every shade is wonderful! ☺️
drag0nfly_girl no, that is literally the definition of race. Racism is the false attribution of negative based upon race/skin tone. Race is just skin colour. There is ethnicity, which may be what you’re thinking of, which is the intersection of culture and race.
@drag0nfly_girl You obviously know nothing about genetics and you most definitely have no idea what race is. I recommend you to read a few books on the subject so you can understand that genetically speaking, we belong to one race: the human race! People might have different languages, skin colours, hair textures, cultures, eye shapes... but race, is one.
There are far too many self proclaimed 'self-help' gurus out there expounding all sorts of cliches and mantras about how to 'better ourselves'. Invariably, to benefit from their wisdom costs money and, in my own experience, leaves you feeling no better about your own situation and much worse about your bank balance! I initially happened across John as I'm extremely pale-from Scotland too-and I needed inspiration regarding make up for my skin tone. Never did I expect to listen to someone who, not only has improved my make up, but has improved my sense of self and who does this totally without monetary gain or accolades. Thank you sincerely John x
I wish I had seen this video when I was 11. I was bullied so much for being super pale. I had always liked my pale skin, entering middle school I was pressured into tanning because many girls were cheerleaders since I went to an athletic high school, even adults and teachers said it was healthy to be tan, even though I had known several family members that had gotten skin cancer from tanning. I never actually tanned since I hated the pain from sunburns, but I used self tan creams and I was orange for a good 5years. Now I’m 23 and I feel beautiful and there are many bigger concerns than my skin color.
I’m a south east asian; I had the same problem of school friends mocking me for having dark skin. Even my siblings teased me for it. True what he said, it’s very highly regarded to have pale skin here. ALL the skin care products advertisements here promotes whitening as one of a feature of their products.
Wow it goes both ways..its crazy how black people are trying to lighting their skin so much and then we have whits people who want to tan so much..ive been bullied so much for having darkskin..
Same exact thing for me. To top it off, my undertones are blue which sometimes gives the appearance of glowing (like looking at an over exposed photo). Not cute. Now I have to have skin removed constantly because from years of tanning I now get pre melanomas.
@@asmrhousemouse3157 I get pre-cancerous growths, too, due to my extremely fair skin and some nasty sunburns earlier in my life. I use Retin-A at a .05 or .1 strength (the strongest available) to get rid of them. Apply twice daily to the spot or bump. Mine go away in 3 to 4 weeks. I also get seborrheic keratoses, which usually go away in 3 to 4 weeks when I apply the oil from a capsule of 10,000 unit vitamin D3. My husband's went away when he started taking a low dose of D3 orally, but mine needed topical applications. D3 stops the cells of the seborrheic keratosis from replicating, so it sloughs off, leaving lovely new skin underneath.
@@asmrhousemouse3157 PS: it takes so long to get through the "diagnosis and into treatment" process that by the time I would get my bumps treated, I can get rid of them myself. Plus I scar very easily; having a doctor remove them would be my last resort.
G. Dub And you cannot forget the "Ghastly decor in hell" comment. That one made me giggle for at least the next 10 minutes. I find John to be one of the funniest people I have come across in a very long time.
"Society's opinion is secondhand, the only thing that anyone should ever accept that's secondhand are the crown jewels. I thought anyone knew that." *sip's tea*
"mortals arent my thing" hah i love you. i grew up in rio de janeiro and thoug i dont consider myself all that pale i grew up with all sorts of nasty comments about my skin. i also live in london and was naive enough to believe this problem would be in the past. the pressure to be (now fake) is much higher, specially when i say the country i came from. thank you for your video
Stiletto ́s Box The pain of growing on a tropical country. When I was in school I was the reference for pale, and I wasn`t as light as I am now, people would compare their skin to mine to see how pale they were (of course if they were close to my skin tone they would feel bad), I used to want to have a darker skin or tan, not because I disliked my skin tone, but I just wanted everyone to shut up about it. Now I know the dangers of the sun to my skin and protect it like something precious to me.
"Society's opinion is secondhand", oh I love you for saying this John. This is such an obvious truth that we should remind ourselves every freaking day. Thank you so much for bringing this important topic to light. I can't thank you enough for making this video. 😘😘😘
I adore you, John. When someone claims to be an immortal, I look at them as though they were insane. When John makes the proclaimation of immortality, I believe him. He embodies the wisdom, confidence, and refinement I would imagine an immortal would have.
Your comments about the assumption that you skin tone is making a political statement absolutely spot on. It's just skin...that happens to be a particular colour.
I'm also Celtic with extremely pale skin and very pale eyes and i think its beautiful how all of our ancestors all over the world adapted to fit into their climate!!! like in sudan where the sun is always beating down peoples skin is extremely dark and vise versa, humans beings are so fascinating its dumbfounding
I used to work with a woman from the Philippines and she would always compliment how fair my skin was!!! I liked it because I actually got made fun of a lot when I was in school for being so white. I was called "ghost" LOL
Dread Mage I am from there and what John said is true. We got colonized by Spain and America, light skinned nations that held power. Soon the same people stayed in while the workers stayed outside in the sun. Therefore dark skin is for poor workers and light skin is equated to power, popularity and general positive outlooks
well, commonly, the people here tend to like fair skin very much, as they seem to think it adds to one's physical beauty. i was commended for it as a kid and complemented about it to this day, but it does not have anything to do with my race. my skin tone changes due to natural causes, but it also grows fair quite quickly. and i also try to avoid sunlight as much as possible.
Sorry but screw your offenders! Your skin is your skin, it is as it is. Period. Black, white, yellow, red or whatever colour of the rainbow. Making fun out of someone's skin tone is simply ridiculous. I'm also naturally very pale (as John stated 0 designed for the Norther Hemisphere, with strong Slavic heritage ) and I also got comments as ghost or if I was alright since I looked so sickly but I never got those comments close to heart. So you do you and enjoy life!
I’m just as pale as you and have always been ridiculed for it, everyone has always told me to go tan (I physically cannot tan). I’m excited to hear your insight on this topic.
I'm fairly pale (rather fair, more neutral/pink undertones). So many people have told me I'd be "prettier" if I tanned. No thanks. I burn before I tan, and I don't like when my skin manages to tan, but I can live with it because it's just what happens when you spend time outside. Probably the most insulting thing that has happened (thank goodness I wasn't there, I heard it after the fact) was when my boyfriend went out to dinner with his parents and visiting aunt and uncle. They went to Hooters and the uncle kept trying to get my boyfriend to ask for their waitress' phone number. His mother, who KNEW me, explained to the uncle, "Oh Daniel doesn't date pretty girls." Boy was that a kick in the teeth...
You are so #beautiful. Not only #visuallystunning, but the eloquent words. I'm not talking about how you speak, it's the content. You speak so wonderfully. It just shows how wonderfully warm and lovely you are on the inside. All those ugly incidents have made you who you are. And i feel they make you so beautifully #compassionate and #wise. Your words #transcend, and I hope they reach as many people as possible. #loveyoujohn #foreverspeak
Watching your video made me feel so much more calm. I woke up feeling very low😞. I just wanted to eat chocolate and go back to sleep. Instead I made myself a cup of tea on your suggestion. I sat and sipped the tea and listened to you. I feel better now. I have incredibly pale skin and when not tanned or with makeup on, people make remarks that I look tired or sick. Thank you for making me feel better about my pale skin and my general saddens this morning. Sending you love from Australia ❤️
Omg you nailed it. Whatever we perceive with wealth, power, and success will be deemed by society as "better." I'm currently taking a WMST class, and the struggles that come with not being the ideal being is truly horrible. It begins with YOU. Showing society and the system in place that you love yourself despite possessing traits they don't see as beautiful or up to par. You are just as worthy and deserving as the next person :)
I'm from Ireland and I am as pale as a ghost. I go to school everyday and people constantly ask me, "Are you ill?" No. I'm absolutely fine but somehow these comments about my skin have made me put on layors and layors of fake tan (which makes your skin very dry and patchy). I love wearing wild make up and sometimes I wear very dark eyes and lips. I worked in a bar and was once referred to as Morticia (Adams). Again I took to fake tan, I spent lots of money on tan and darker foundation just to please someone else. I just wanted to say Thank You John!!! I really needed this at this time in my life. I love my pale skin and think it's unique in a world of fake self love! It is definitely an insecurity that society has put on me and your words have pretty much summed up what I've been trying to say for years! Love your channel, we need more people like you in the world!
"Society's opinion is second hand" 👏 I loved this video! Thank you for talking about this 😁 it really made me feel better, I didn't know I needed to hear this so much
“I’ve been avoiding the sun for 3 1/2 thousand years.” SAME!! 😂 “The only thing one should receive second hand is the family jewels- I thought everyone knew that.”*sips tea* 😂😂 John, you’re funny, refined, and absolutely amazing. Bless you for this video, it absolutely touched my being.
I love John's words in this video! He's totally loving his skin but also loves all the other skintones! I my self have mediterranean skin tone, more likely tanned, used to hate it but nowadays i start loving my own features. I also have many "black" female friends and i find them absolutely stunningly beautiful.. 💖
For someone so present in the beauty industry to have such a sensible, scientific and historical understanding of why we as human beings look the way we do was beautifully refreshing. I have your skin tone and I've never had someone be so helpful in helping me find products that help me look more like myself and enhance my tone instead of trying to change it. I've been bullied in the past for my paleness and I went to high school in an area where I witnessed people with darker skin tones bullying those with even darker skin tones, and it always made me so uncomfortable. It took a lot of growing up for me to be okay with my tone and I am so grateful for certain beauty lines that make nearly white (and very deep cocoa) tones, so thank you for making that such a large part of your channel. My mother died when I was 16 from cancer and skin cancer runs in my family, so I will have to admire other people's tans instead of indulging myself, but that's what bronzer is for!You are beautiful inside and out John, thank you for your voice of reason and idealism!
LOL John has been avoiding the sun for 300,000 years! John, the sun isn't shining where I am today but you brought light to my day. So very happy to see a video from you. I look forward to more and enjoying your insights and soothing and inspiring vibration.
I am as pale as you and I have been mocked for it all my life. I come from a very sunny and hot place (Sicily), where British people go to tan on holiday, and where people are usually Mediterranean looking, with olive skin and dark hair and eyes. Some people in Sicily though are of Viking descent, since the island was conquered by the Northmen as England was in the same period (by two related men!). Living there has been hard for me all my life, not only because I look foreigner, but because I almost look like a freak, with everyone staring at me, and the sunburns! For me it was at least one hospital visit at summer for severe sunburn with very high fever, even if I wore 50+ sunscreen. In England now I am still the palest, but no one mocks me for it, except for one time that a girl asked me if my skin was "bleached" and when, asked where I come from, I was told that I was lying, since Sicily is so near Africa (it is) and I did not look African at all! PS: I think I saw you a couple days ago on the Piccadilly line, I wanted to say hi but you were reading so I did not want to disturb you. I am saying it now, then. Hi! :)
I'm American, and supposedly I'm supposed to me mostly Irish and Scottish in heritage ....my last name is VERY O irish LOL, my whole family is pale , pink undertone, and freckles, blue or green eyed , NOT ME! Warm olive skin tone, hardly a freckle , dark hair and brown eyes ....I could probably pass for Mediterranean .
Aaaah I'm French Catalan and I have the same issue. The whole Corsican side of my family is full of ginger and blond people, and I got my super white skin from them, even though I have dark eyes and ash brown hair. Generally, since I have overall Mediterranean features, people ask me if I'm Italian, Greek, or even Morrocan. But during my upper studies, there was this Israelian girl with all the typical Mediterranean features who started to tell me I didn't look Mediterranean at all and I was exaggerating my heritage on purpose. Like, girl, my family have mostly been from Catalonia for generations, even my grandmas have Catalan as their native language and learned French at school. And it's just the same with the Corsican side, they've been there for generations lol. It's especially hilarious because a Morrocan colleague (who thought I was Morrocan too) complimented me on my skin and told me I was lucky. What can we gather from that: people are silly and one should believe in oneself first and foremost. PS: a fun fact about my family: on my mother's side, people have very typical Mediterranean features and one of my aunt even managed to pass for a local when she lives in the Morrocan countryside. My own mother and brother have a natural tan and can get real dark real quick in summer. Meanwhile, my father and I have to stay in the shade to not get burned to the 50th degree and we go white - red - white. 😂
I have a recessive ginger gene so pale skin and dark hair. When I visited Genoa lots of people spoke to me in Italian and were very surprised that I was English. It's crazy that people dont realise that a sea faring nation like Italy would have people of many different skin tones.
I'm half Sicilian, and white as all heck too (in America). People have asked if I am sure I'm Italian since I am not Live skinned. People need to be educated!
I have similar story.. Extra pale and from southern Italy. Mixed family also I am extra pale also in UK.A part from any racism or comments...I spent my childhood and teenhood in hospital because of sun and got damaged from it.Much love.
First of all, the sophistication of your vocabulary blows me away and inspires me to grow mine as well. Second, the nonchalant jokes are everything. Third, this video is extremely helpful for me. My pale skin has always been disregarded and for a period of time I was really insecure about it. I always bought fake tanners and self tanners because I am not able to tan and felt like I couldn’t be as beautiful as my friends who could. I have overcome this now, and since finding your channel I am so excited to learn how to refine everything that is me. 👍🏻
this video has cheered me up unbelievably, a combination of anthropological exploration, philosophy, make up and your absolutely magical voice and vocabulary; I'm in love! please make more videos sharing your opinions on the world that next time you feel inspired, I'd love to hear more.
I often got called Morticia, since I have very very pale skin and black hair. When I was a kid I got bullied a lot and nowadays random people keep telling me I should go to the beach to get some colour. Beautiful words John.
I find these films, where you talk about art history or cultural history or different styles, extremely interesting. Please, continue to make more of these. I am also highly entertained by your "questions and answers" films.
It’s nice finding this side of UA-cam... where I can listen and learn and understand, instead of aimlessly watch video after video. How does UA-cam know me so well with these recommendations!!
I wish you had a podcast that I could listen to daily. Your soothing voice and beneficial advice go hand in hand and I appreciate how organic and authentic you are. What a breath of fresh air.😍
I love this. I hated being pale through my childhood. Other kids made fun of me for being so pale and when I would hide from the sun, when we would play outside. I also had freckles, so they would make fun of that too. I appreciate all of your words, and your brilliant discussion on skin tones and what has become fashionable in society. I'm from an Irish family (first generation American), but living in the US has shown me that I'm significantly paler than the average person here. I have learned to embrace being so pale over the years, and even now seeing people like yourself address it makes me so happy. I'm tired of being told I should try tanning or should go outside more. I'm pale. I'm Irish. I'm not meant for the sun. I physically hurt when I stand outside in the sun. I literally feel like my body is burning when I stand outside under the sun. So those people can take their tanning and leave now. But yeah, loved the video! It addressed something I think about all the time. Thank you for making it!!
As a fellow Scot with an equally whiter than white skin tone, I really appreciate this video. I grew up being called "peely wally" and I've only just at 32 years old stopped wearing long sleeves and high necks so I can smear darker foundation over my face and neck. You've made me proud to be whiter than white and your tutorials have been invaluable.
I watch this time and again. I had to write this down for myself and for any human who needs this; "Society's opinion is not necessarily organic to you,it isnt necessarily yours. We must be careful of how much premium you put on the opinions of others, we must remember that humans change their minds frequently, you must have a sense of distance to the opinions that other people say. Sometimes people aren't aware of how insidious or divisive their opinions are. Sometimes people are not even aware of what they are saying or what it means. So, always be very careful how much premium you prescribe to other people's opinions. Another person's opinion is not necessarily fact or defining of you. You define yourself. You do you and then you refine yourself. It can be difficult to depend on yourself,to give you the encouragement at all times, to give yourself the love, and the nurture and the value that you require. You must be very careful when looking to others, looking to society and looking to ideas and standards for validation of either your beauty or your worth. Always remember you are a sentient creature, you exist this one time, just take a moment to look back at yourself and think 'goodness gracious I'm fascinating I'm wonderful' because you do only exist this one time you've been granted this body, this biological technology there are millions of cells at work, right now, all alive, all living organs, forming your totality of a physical being, that is fascinating, we must never discount nor discard the reality that we are, so every single one of us in all our variety,in all our colours, our shapes and sizes, are indeed valuable. We must not be afraid, we must confront our fears to embrace ace who you are. We live in a world that has been structured under the rulership of fear. One day that will change and we'll be led by hope and ideas and thoughts Reject, get rid off, discard any idea/standard/thought that does not value you as a being or encourage you to be more on the basis of what you already are." In the words of John MacLean.
I am Greek! I live in Greece and I am one shade darker than you [considering the products/shades you normally use]. You can only imagine the comments I get. One of the worst was at the MAC store, where the MUA told me they did not have "Albino" shade in foundation.... out loud...when the store was full with customers. I did talk back, I told her they obviously had "Rude" shade in foundation [since she had a full face of makeup on] and left. But, I must say I was hurt. On a different occasion, someone tried to insult me by calling me Morticia. But I was so touched! hahahaha..... I said "thank you"! I am a grown woman, I like myself the way that I am. But I feel sorry for younger boys and girls who are taught how to be insecure. Even on youtube, the biggest gurus actually APOLOGISE to their subscribers if they don't have a spray tan. "OMG, forgive me! I look like a ghost!", "OMG, forgive me I look so pasty!". It annoys me. I also feel sorry to all the dark skinned sisters/brothers. They have to deal with all kinds of comments and prejudice. It's sickening. If you start a line....I will support you!! We need a makeup brand for the really light and really dark skinned. Provide them with foundation, concealer and contour shades! It would be a total hit!
geenagr I'm greek too and I suffer the same. People are always surprised and say omg you turned so pale what's wrong ?thinking that I'm sick or something lol
This video and the subsequent comments like yours has been illuminating to me. I hadn't thought about how different cultures perceive different skin tones. Or how people who have lighter skin tones are shamed just like people who are darker. I'm glad you told her off in such a *refined* way. No one should be shamed for the color of their skin. It's absurd.
I am Spanish (my mom tans easily but my dad is a freckled redhead) and super pale as well. Growing up I was always told I looked sick or dead, and I started wearing make-up, mostly concealer and powder for my genetic under eye darkness when I was 13 or so because of that, as well as blush to look a little less "dead". I got so many comments growing up about me "not going to the beach, not getting enough sun", etc from complete strangers as well as my family... I cannot stand the sun and I have always LOVED my pale skin despite other people's opinions. This was in the 2000s/early 2010s when everyone was tanning like crazy and turning orange and wrinkly slowly but surely. Now I get complimented on my skin tone and make-up almost daily everywhere I go, and all the people who wasted money on tanning beds are wrinkly and look 10 years older than what they actually are, while I am always told I look younger, and have a great complexion, hah! I am about to turn 32 and have yet to see a wrinkle in my face :) Btw I can't believe that MAC employee was so rude to you... It's the only brand I have found that made a foundation that matched me back when every other foundation was too dark for my skin tone. If John starts a make-up line I'll be the first in line to buy it!
Hello Tamara! Cultures play a BIG part to it. All over Asia, women are obsessed with whitening skin because the colour of their skin may affect things such marriage and work opportunities! In my country it's not that serious, but it all comes down to being and acting different than most. I don't know why, but it makes people uncomfortable! When it comes to dark skinned men and women, I simply can't understand why they are being told that the colour of their skin is not pretty. I adore it! All these shades of chocolate!
Hola peculia!!! Como estas? OMG, those dark circles ....I've had them since fourth grade. Thank God that, at some point, I discovered correctors. Bobbi Brown makes amazing ones. I have also loved my pale skin, I inherited it from my grandmother. She died at age 87 with ONE wrinkle on her forehead! Seriously! I have ALWAYS followed her advice and did not obsess with tanning at all. Moreover, I have always followed a good skincare routine and lifestyle since I were 18. I am 35 and I don't have any wrinkles or discoloration. Nothing.... Not even around the eyes. Plus, I can get away with using natural brands and three steps only for my skincare. I will welcome those wrinkles when they come and actually feel blessed that I have lived long enough to get them. But NOT YET!! hahahahaha. I want one when I am 50. Maybe! hahahaha. I know girls who used to smear their face & body with baby oil and then sunbathe. The aftermath is NOT good. They ask me for advice now, but I don't know how to help them. I feel bad! As for MAC, I haven't stepped foot in there since 2009 ! Rudeness is more than I can handle! Moreover, I have light skin with neutral undertones, so they have never been able to match me. Their foundations look either pink or yellow on me. Not a good look. Giorgio Armani does a nice light & neutral foundation shade. Unfortunately, no drugstore foundation matches my skin colour and undertone. I have to spend money on high end! Sigh!
I needed this!! I live in LA, the land of tanned beautiful models and I stand out as a gawky light-skinned four-eyed Midwestern girl lol. People seem to stare at my legs when I wear shorts because I don’t believe in tanning (I don’t want premature aging) but it’s hard to embrace who you are when everyone around you is beautiful with sun kissed skin. Thanks so much for this video, John. I need to work on my confidence. 💕
Your approach to skin tone is a refreshing aspect and approach to modern day ideals and I really appreciate your unbiased yet educated response, everyone should be proud of their skin tones and I’m so glad for the educated aspect you bring to the discussion, I love you John!

One of my closest friends is Haitian and very very dark skinned. She was teased for her skin and was often recommended skin bleaching treatments. I think both our skin tones are lovely and that the world would be awfully boring if everyone had similar skin tones. This video is great.

John's skin is white white! And it's stunning. Very beautiful
The contrast of the black hair and white skin is what I like the most
T Stanton and those icy blue eyes...yep! I agree. John is gorgeous. And I love the recognition that all skin tones are beautiful.
T Stanton I agree too :) he's a gorgeous "clear winter".
Finally someome who doesn't call skin tones like 'black' or 'white' . These are VERY old terms, and do not represents the beautiful nature of the epidermis.
And by political view, only insecure people will describe another by skin 'colour' (side note: black and white are shades)
:)
💕💕💕

You are my new best friend!
Cat23 I see what you did there.

Calista Ann Me too ;) Sadly, I do not sound like one though, like John :)
Emily Rachel Gilley not 3000 but 3500 you left out the half 🤣😂
Marriam Al Ramadhan Oh dear, I shall correct that
Well I'm 30 and I do not. have. a single. line. on.
“The only thing one should _ever_ accept, second-hand, is the _Crown Jewels!”_ *I SCREAMED*
Am super dark, I never thought I would be a fan of a pale person just because I consider our experiences very different but, John you proved me wrong. I am learning a lot from you. you are amazing.new subscriber here.
Lord Maclean has spoken...we all shall listen and refine!
Thinking about skin color as a technology makes everything look so different
Tímea Tarjányi maybe you should've listened in biology class cause that's what they've been telling you!
Can you explain to me this concept? I kind of tuned out from the vid, sorry John.
just a quick PSA about damaging UV rays from the sun.
Lol.

Abby Sheeran you don't have to be promoting anything by just living xd (for example some people are telling fat people that are just posting their photos that they're promoting obesity) You have right to live and be happy in your body and you don't be pressured into representing any idea because it would be easier for people to understand the world
"unlike most forces of darkness, I don't proclaim allegiance to the Devil, I operate independently" I nearly spit my coffee all over my dog
"We don't do slogans at Maclean's house, we do recommendations."
*I'll take a note for that*
I am Black American and I go through years of lightening and darkening my skin.

All of this discussion should end racism .... People who are racist definitely needs to get educated by this video.
pretty much godly 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
drag0nfly_girl no, that is literally the definition of race.

I love this person so much the vocabulary, the opinions, the open mind??? An actual Icon I'm shook

Same lmao :,)
yep, sounds like the philippines
Sorry but screw your offenders! Your skin is your skin, it is as it is. Period. Black, white, yellow, red or whatever colour of the rainbow. Making fun out of someone's skin tone is simply ridiculous. you're beautiful
His mother, who KNEW me, explained to the uncle, "Oh Daniel doesn't date pretty girls."
Boy was that a kick in the teeth...

No.
I'm sure you've faced adversity throughout your life, but it's an inspiration to see you overcome and excell with strength and grace.
How can someone speak in cursive ?
THIS. IS. MOST. ACCURATE
That’s insulting. He speaks in calligraphy.
Ian Knowles You have to be very drunk to speak Dean Martin (cursive).
I feel like a better human after watching this.
"Society's opinion is second hand" 👏 I loved this video! Thank you for talking about this 😁 it really made me feel better, I didn't know I needed to hear this so much
“I’ve been avoiding the sun for 3 1/2 thousand years.” SAME!! 😂
“The only thing one should receive second hand is the family jewels- I thought everyone knew that.”*sips tea* 😂😂 John, you’re funny, refined, and absolutely amazing.
Expert advice without the guru status... Utterly refreshing!
Mixed family also
I am extra pale also in UK.A part from any racism or comments...I spent my childhood and teenhood in hospital because of sun and got damaged from it.Much love.
“The only thing you should accept secondhand is the Crown Jewels. I thought everybody knew this.”

'I operate independently.' 😂😂😂

Oromisa *King. I think John identifies as male, which is rare and beautiful. Kings can slay too.
LMFAOOOO
How does UA-cam know me so well with these recommendations!!
bitch came to serve us knowledge in a sensible blazer and brooch for this filum, i'm quaking!
James Ian that brooch!!
What IS the brooch of? I am so curious
"I've been avoiding the sun for three and a half thousand years " 😂 love that !
You are so incredibly mesmerising, subtle like a delicate flower and yet solid like gold. I love watching your videos!
Iza Malczyk Solid like the most beautiful diamond. Pure gold is soft and flexible.
solid as in pure and 100% ;)
You have a very intelligent sense of humour.
I watch this time and again. I had to write this down for myself and for any human who needs this;
"Society's opinion is not necessarily organic to you,it isnt necessarily yours. One day that will change and we'll be led by hope and ideas and thoughts
Reject, get rid off, discard any idea/standard/thought that does not value you as a being or encourage you to be more on the basis of what you already are."
In the words of John MacLean.
"Another person's opinion is not necessarily fact or defining of you. You define yourself!"
Thank you for this!
Petition for John to come out with a "Refinedation" line
Does anyone else think that he sounds very soothing???
His voice is absolutely beautiful.
Oh my lord, yes. I could listen to him all day. I love the way he says the word film.
The exact reason why im here lol
It's the reason why I suscribed.
Jasmine Vasquez wait its a guy
