funny enough, a lot of stories I heard from soldiers going to afghanistan told me there was barely any action. matter of fact, very few actually used their rifles. and when they did, they rarely shot to kill. and that's not just coalition forces, Insurgents too. you'd be more likely to get killed by an IED or a Sniper than in a gunfight. in fact, those were the most common cause of casualties in the middle east.

The gel tape he’s taking about on the AK is a type of russian tourniquet called an esmarch, Russian and soviet soldiers would put it on their stocks so they could still get a cheek weld when their metal stocks got hot from being in the sun all day. They mightve also just been sometimes used for a better cheek weld in general

"Banistans" use not soviet-make high-quality AK, they got a bad garage-made AK from Pakistan or even Africa.
These cheap AK clones, among other disadvantages, have poor varnish on wooden parts. This varnish becomes sticky because of sun and heat. Its very disturbing.
Therefore, they use what is called "izolenta" (something similar to duct tape, but common in the east). It is a recognizable blue color and Nick is absolutely right - it is very often wrapped around wooden parts of guns in countries like "Banistan".

ADrunkHomeles Guy I was Air Force Security Forces, deployed to Turkey from Dec ‘15-Mar ‘17, and I can vouch for you. The standard-issued M4s with who knows how old M68 sites would jam almost every other shot. The dozens of years of carbon and other shit was impossible to clean completely. Though we were in a Combat Zone, in FPCON DELTA for a month (sounds crazy, but we were in D for that long), because of our friendly local ISIS terror cell, we were never attacked; provoked us like hell though. Why they didn’t attack, none of us ever will know-but I thought I was going to die every fuckin’ night. The mere thought of the unreliability of those M4s in hindsight shows-in credit to you Sir-just how fucking lucky me and all of us were to get out of there. Oh, I forgot to mention that our duties were the security of approximately 25-30 B61 thermonuclear bombs, which was our friendly neighborhood terrorist’s main target. What a shit show that was, God Bless.

Well you see, really nice AKs will reliably shoot a 4 inch group at 100 yards out of the box, over time it spreads to about a 6 inch group at 100 yards. The M16 (I am keeping it to military rifles) on the other hand has an effective range of 601.487 yards (550 meters). The damage part is also pretty true, AKs are chambered in 7.62x39mm while the M16 is chambered in 5.56x45mm.

Well, the most common ammo in North America, are the .22 LR, 12 guage, .30-06, .270 is getting pretty close, and finally .308/7.62. Not that .223/5.56 isn't common, but it's not the absolute most common. Theoretically, a well built 10/22, a pump 12 gauge of your choosing, and a .30-06 bolt action of your choosing would be the best choices for most common ammo. The guns not as common, but the Browning BAR is a damn fine choice as far as semi-auto .30-06 rifles. It's essentially the only choice.

Id go ar platform. longer range lighter ammo way more ammo choices and infinitely more modular. Plus you can do a simple barrel swap and shoot multiple different calibers. Do a barrel and bcg swap and you can have 30 or sp calibers to shoot out of your ar

AR-15 is a closed system. The tolerances are so tight, sand and dirt generally stays out, increasing reliability.
The problem with military M4/M16 rifles is that they're so heavily used, and abused by the soldiers carrying them, that they become unreliable, creating jams and malfunctions.
If you read the Pentagon's requirements for the M4 reliability, the M4 is required to have over 4,000 MRBS, or Mean Rounds Between Stoppages. Shipments are periodically tested at random to ensure the MRBS standard is being adhered to. The M4 tends to have between 7,000 and 8,000 MRBS. That's pretty damn reliable. That's 240 or more full, 30-round, magazines before a jam, malfunction or other weapon stoppage.
Now, if you have a good soilder or special forces with an M16 or M4, it will be much more clean and reliable since they take care of them, AR platform is much better than AK platform, it's an fact.

Also, my friend who let me shoot in his property got a turn on both, and he said he prefers the AR. However, I couldn't help notice when we were done he kept fidgeting with the AK, and he wanted to carry the AK out to my car when I was going home. Just saying :)
