  • I am delighted to host Prof. Judith, an expert on the transformative intersections of art and esotericism. Our conversation orbits around the enigmatic and evocative works of Kenneth Anger, an avant-garde filmmaker whose oeuvre plunges into the depths of magical practice and occult symbolism.
Kenneth Anger, a central figure in both underground cinema and modern esotericism, has mesmerised audiences with films like "Lucifer Rising" and "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome." His work melds ritualistic elements with visual storytelling, offering an innovative exploration of how art can serve as a conduit for magical intent.

In the age of the internet, people don't appreciate how difficult it was to have access to anything esoteric. You didn't have access to these films in a small town. Your local library would not have books on any controversial topics. You could go to a bookshop and ask them to order you a book, but they would no doubt refuse. Then the community pressures would destroy you.

In his words "He compared his movies to poetry because the term more accurately described how the fragmented, associative, music-driven editing worked on viewers’ brains."....."Some movies can be the equivalent of mantras,” Anger told Ebert in a 1978 interview. “They cause you to lose track of time. You become disoriented. Magical things can happen. Magic causes changes to occur in the universe. You can mix two elements together and get an unexpected result just beyond the edge of what you realize.” - The Vulture
Never hearing or knowing of the man learning that he was one who inspired the Rolling Stones hit 'Sympathy for the Devil' was all I needed to know to gather a general semblance of his work. [The connection of dots between Mick Jager David Bowie et al (the thread is super long that keeps pulling n pulling n pulling) ...... interesting stuff adding to the academic tapestry none the less. Not sure I will view his Fireworks or Lucifer Rising (not my genre) albeit great vid and interview as always Dr Puca.

I had never heard of Kenneth Anger until a couple of years ago, when author Jason Colavito was doing research into James Dean's alleged involvement in S&M. I didn't even know Anger was a practitioner.

the magic of Anger's films will be more understood in the future as his seemingly supernatural elements will be uncovered and people will be amazed and wonder "how did he know this?"

@drangelapuca The sound on this is not as clear as the livestream version. Your video editing software must lower the quality somehow... I've noticed other pre-recorded videos sound muffled.

Has anyone heard of an experimental filmaker named Herb Degrass, Ceremonial Magician and Witch? He was my best friend's husband. I helped her when he passed. Herbert Jean DeGrasse. I know he did magical films.

Compared to other livestreams the sound isn't too bad. Just have turn the sound up which is common for such videos on UA-cam. As for the filmaker's video you would have expected better lol

Though yeah, Angela, your big fancy microphone does seem to muffle the sound. Same in other videos.

If she uses a SM-7b microphone (I can't tell because of the foam filter), then perhaps if she added a Cloudlifter mic booster, placed between the microphone and the preamp/interface, would help provide additional clarity? Otherwise, without knowing the details about the specific gear used, and the room, I can't make constructive suggestions, for improving her sound quality, with any guarantee for effectiveness. But if the mic is a SM-7b, and there's no Cloudlifter... then add one, and watch a brief video for how to hook it up - it's a pretty simple device, which requires no technical expertise in order to use it properly.

@@GizzyDillespee comparing it with the livestream it appears her editing software is messing with sound.

Honestly, it was our least favorite film of his. Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome and Scorpio Rising are pretty good tho
