I always considered myself a slow learner, even as a child I wanted people to slow down, but maybe I actually just wanted accuracy rather than sloppy understanding. Thanks for the episode. Great interview!🌟

Slow and steady wins a race. Heard this quote years back..Also have seen men doing fast things, like driving, they do not have patience to listen to thier partners /wife's you name it..I have experienced in life..Seen brain injury and met cancer patients, chemo, elderly yelling shouting etc, etc...

As an Autistic, I have always slowed my movements down to learn the rhythm and flow of the block/strike etc. I do the same when writing with a fountain pen.

Yup when my grandpa taught me to play guitar as a young kid, he said slower is faster and gave me the example of a professional gun slinger that they learn slow methodically and precise as how to draw the weapon without shooting yourself in the foot, speed will come naturally and with time.

Great video and information for those that have never reached that level of automatism. We must perform automatismically! Yes, this is a word I invented that has so much meaning pertaining to all skill sets whether it's playing musical instruments, martial arts, hand gun training or gymnastics. Performing automatismically is the key. Try picking up a guitar and constructing chord and note formations with your left hand and picking specific strings with your right hand. Once you've achieved that, memorize the words to a song and sing at the same time. Difficult? Yes, if you've never done it. When you've practiced enough so that you can do all these things simultaneously without hardly even thinking you will be performing them automatismically. Once you've reached this skill level now you can perform expressing real feeling and emotion using inflections through your voice and fingers. Congratulations! 😂

It is like how my Taichi master is teaching our class move by move very slowly. It took me several weeks to get used to learn how to shift my weight step by step. He mentioned that the slower we practice the better. Now, I understand why. Thanks!

My best Tai Chi instructor drilled this in to me "to know fast you must first know slow". And in practice what could be done in 5 min. He demanded this be done in 15 minutes & no less. It took me months to be able to do this. And my speed became Explosive!

Love the tee shirt. Power is the application of knowledge. I once saw a man with a tattoo, knowledge = power. I was wanting to point out that I believe his tattoo was not accurate, but he looked happy and I did not want to upset him. Martial taiji a large proportion of new learning is done slow. This is where the taichi slow from style became popular, but they did not continue their learning by applying what they learnt in the slow and applied it with speed. Kia ora (be well)

How do you overcome boredom during the slow learning phase, What's the best technique, when you don't see results or you can do it 'you think' but how to make it more interesting so you don't lose the foundation, I have suffered I think from boredom and lack of consistency because I give in to the temptation to see quick results and lose interest. When you are bored, it's hard to have efficient learning. What do we do then Jim?

Fascinating, made me think of tai chi and qigong where they train very slow in order to be able to become fast but accurate and I definitely think motor skills such as dancers super benefit from the slow and accurate start.
Edit: I've devoted my life this past year into language learning and I see so many language learner saying that natives speak too fast but I keep listening to native speakers only just like kids do and try to set the bar high for myself to hit the bar and with that challenge of basically throwing myself off a cliff into a level way too hard this video definitely triggered a moment of questioning if theres something else I could be doing. But I still think this mental type of learning unlike muscular training I'm fine to go in hard instead of slowing down. For muscular training though that takes motor skills I definitely like the slow first approach even before this video.

One of my Martial Arts teachers said... "Slow to Learn, Long to Forget"
It is vital to go Slow when learning. Its where you see and understand what you are trying to do. Once you get the basic fundamentals and principles... followed by proper mechanics, then speed and power will come naturally!
When you skip the basics, you can try and do it fast, but you will look Sloppy! The people who Know, will see right through all your faults and lack of proper training.

I recommend “Reading With The Right Brain” by David Butler. Comprehension is KEY. His approach is different than traditional speed reading techniques that have been around for some time, and all are mostly a different version of the Evelyn Wood program. It has helped me, as I have used the Evelyn Wood approach, and found that Reading with the Right Brain helped me more. Cheers!

    Hey you, native English speaker...
I'm Renan From Brazil , I've been learning English for 2 years and some days ago , I had an ideia of speed up the velocity of the videos to improve my listening skills
Cuz I know people don't speak too fast like 1.5x faster
So it's getting good to understand natural English conversation in normal speed
But this video says that you need to slow down your velocity when you are learning ,now I got confused
    What should I do?
    Note : when it's 1.5x of velocity my comprehension is about 70% ( I believe it's gonna improve )
    Normally, 90%, 95%

tai chi works on this concept...if you ever saw a guy who was trained to fight with tai chi, they are incredibly fast. I met one guy who trained boxers--so much speed in a 60 yr old man it was crazy. That said, you can't just learn the tai chi form and practice it to become a good fighter. You'd be a laughing stock. You have to learn the applications and body mechanics and train with full speed sparring eventually--I have never seen a tai chi class that does this.
