Hey there shouldn’t be any sand in the tank until the axolotl gets at least 4-5 inches also I don’t recommend plastic plants cause they can damage their gills
There should be no sand in that tank at all until your axolotl gets much bigger. A bare bottom is the best, and it’s the safest. It will also become a huge hassle due to the amount of waste they produce.
no, sand is good as it doesn't get stuck in their digestive system. Using larger substrate is a bigger risk love. Maybe the waste can be a hassle but other than that sand is a good choice.
Depending on how small your axie is, I would recommend tubbing them until they are big enough to go in the bigger tank. Tubbing is also good initially to make sure they are eating and pooping properly before putting them in the tank. Also make sure your tank is 100% fully cycled before putting them in. ANY ammonia can cause serious issues for them. A larger tank may be better in the future since they produce a lot of ammonia. Most people recommend a 20 gallon long. Finally make sure they are kept cool enough. They can get really ill if it gets too warm and die. I’ve been researching for years and just got my first once yesterday. They’re still a bit little so I’m tubbing until they’re big enough for my 29 gallon tank. They’re a wild type with the glow gene. Wishing you all the best with yours!
the tank looks amazing!! I was concerned for a second at the beginning with the gravel, but I'm glad you switched to sand! Be careful, though: if your axie is a BABY baby (fresh hatch- 5 inches) you may want to take the sand out to eliminate the risk of impaction
There should be no sand in the tank until the axolotl reaches 5 1/2 inches then you can do sand hope all goes well :) my baby axie is 7 1/2 inches and she’s an albino I love taking care of her!
Sand is not a good idea at all really, especially with such a little baby! I'd actually recommend tile or a bare bottom! I trust you to do more research, you've already done so much.
@Raul Flores I agree its certainly better than gravel, but its still not a great option, especially since they're getting a baby. Axolotls are known to accidentally eat stuff like sand, become constipated, and die. Its just safer to be bare of use tile. Easier to keep clean too!
I'm very tempted to get an axolotl, I want to know are these guys hard to take care of? I've always wanted one, but have been worried they are really hard to take care of.
I’ve had an axolotl for 2 or 3 years and I will say that it can be a bit difficult. I got my Axolotl when I was 11 or 12 years old. (I was a pretty responsible kid and I already had some pets) Now, the most difficult thing is keeping the tank clean. I do a 10/15% water change every 2-3 days to keep the tank clean. At the same time I also clean up any waste/extra food. The only other thing that challenged me was when my Axolotl was sick. He had a parasite from the pet store. I did a bit of research in my aquariums book and found out that it was the anchor worm and took him to the veterinarian and they were able to treat it. Usually after the first year with Axolotls it’s pretty smooth sailing. Any disease will have been discovered and as long as the tank keeps a steady cycle and you maintain it properly and feed a proper diet at a good frequency then it should be fine, other than old-age diseases but they are not common) One last thing: please please please Don’t get an axolotl on a whim or on impulse because it could be bad! Especially because minecraft has made Axolotls a “fad pet” within the last few months and that is really bad! Edit: **realizes that I wrote an essay in a comment XD**
Super cute tank! I love the hide/decor. The driftwood may have some sharp edges so Idk if I would leave that in there and you need a thermometer and a fan. Can't wait to see your axolotl!
Just saying that you HAVE to keep the temperature between 15-20° C or 60-68°F at ALL times. If it goes higher the axolotl will get heatstroke and die. I don’t see a chiller, and you absolutely need one.
A chiller isn’t necessary as long as you can keep the temp below 68 F. My place is kept pretty cool so just a couple fans pointed across the the surface of the water keeps it between 63 and 65. Just depends on how cool your place of living and room is.
@@FishLeFish .... this is just a silly joke that I thought up at first when I read your comment, but, a cool as person like me doesn't need a chiller to regulate the temperature when ever I'm around...🌬️🪂

I'm worried they're going to go extinct before I can get one and aren't they rare?
If they are rare they're probably EXPENSIVE
They’re not really that rare and sometimes you can get them for free
They are critically endangered in the wild. However the ones people keep as pets are bred in captivity
Get some red claw crabs or vampire crabs
Axolotls should be housed alone
I don't recommend having the camera visible.(or in your case a phone)
