      Thank you! I was surprised when I bought it too at how good some of it sounds even nowadays. Bank B has some really good strings and some decent brass that would still hold up, and the pads and synth stuff are fairly flexible too.

    I had the JV 90 which I believe is this keyboard without the floppy drive and sequencer. I loved everything about it except for the 28 voice polyphony. Are used to love stacking multiple versions of each piano wave in order to make something that my ear sounded like somewhat of an upright piano. And I used to like messing around with that patch that I made. I think the soundboard or some thing was beginning to go out of my JV 90 because when the volume slider was put to a lower level the audio would only come out of the left channel and when you turn it up the audio would come out of the right channel only. Are use a JV 1080 now. At least for those classic Roland sounds, because a lot of the sounds from the JV 80 and JV 90 series are there. However there are a few that I miss. It seems like there was a guitar patch or two that the 90 had that the 1080 does not. And I think there were a few others too. I believe the second piano wave that was in the 90 but not in the 80 is in the 1080. So I have maybe considered looking into maybe getting an 880 that is in good working order since I have the 1080 as well.

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching! Yes, the 28-note polyphony can be annoying, as some of the best sounds use four tones; you end up with seven-note polyphony then. Not great for piano stuff with sustain.
      The majority of JV-80/90/1000 patches are compatible with the JV-1080. There are a few settings that are different on the 1080 (like the resonance setting options), but there are approximations that you can make. Don Solaris has some information on his site on that. Some of the wave names are different as well...I bought the JV-1000 because I liked a few of the patches, and didn’t want to mess with sysex and all that to get similar results on an XP-80 etc.
      If you want, see if you can find the names of the guitars etc that you are missing but would like. If and when my midi setup is functional again (I need a new computer and interface), I might be able to do a dump of those specific patches for you. Yes, the JV-1000 and JV-90 are identical except for the sequencer on the 1000, and the floppy drive, which is only used for sequencer stuff.

    • @colbywalsh4610
      @colbywalsh4610 4 роки тому

      Max Thompson Music Have you ever tried using the sequencer on that? I have heard some people that have this model say it is rather clunky and even somewhat unwieldy to use. Because it is not really integrated into the system like say it is integrated on a cord Trayton for example.

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  4 роки тому

      I have. It works okay, but I'm not doing any quantizing or advanced sequencer work. I just use it as a linear recorder. I've also not tried storing the sequences, as I haven't done much with the floppy drive (you can't store sequences internally). To use the sequencer, you need to be in "Performance" mode to have multiple midi channels addressable. My JV-1000 also has the VE-GS1, so that can expand polyphony for sequences (it's a second tone generator, so it can't give you, for example, a 56-voice grand piano. You just get double the polyphony for more layering). It is rather confusing and I find that manual to be the absolute worst of any keyboard I have lol! But as a basic recording mechanism that's erased after powering off, it works fine. Like I said I haven't messed with the floppy storage yet.

    I love ho on that one piano sound with the four parts, you demonstrate how all of those work. Actually watching this video has made me very nostalgic for my JV 90 that I have that has stopped working properly. Are used to use that same piano sound. Except I would use the bright version of piano wave one and piano wave to combine together, and I would use a longer DK on piano wave one to give it almost a FM/ feel. And if you set the volume on them right, like in the mix between those two samples, you will get waves in the sound almost like an upright piano or something like that. I currently now have a 1080, but the 1080 just doesn’t seem to use the piano wave one sound from the JV 90 and 1000 as much. I believe the wave to sound and those synthesizers were very similar at least to my ear to the sound that the 1080 and 2080 use for most of the acoustic grand programs. And I also believe the JV 90 and JV 1000 had a guitar sound that that 1080 doesn’t have either. I forget what the preset was called, but I miss having some of those JV 90 presets in my 1080. One thing I don’t miss from my JV 90 though was the 28th note polyphony. Especially when you would be using all four tones in a patch at one time, you would essentially only have seven notes of polyphony at that point. I have often considered getting a JV eight $.80 the JV 1080 has what I believe to be the piano wave two tone from the JV 90 and combining it with the piano wave one sound. Also, I would get those other presets that were in the JV 90 as well. Because I believe, other than that second piano wave, I have often considered getting a JV eight $.80 the JV 1080 has what I believe to be the piano wave to tone from the JV 90 and combining it with the piano wave one sound. Also, I would get those other presets that were in the JV 90 as well. Because I believe, other than that second piano wave, JV 80 ROM was identical to the JV 90 Rama.

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  5 років тому

      I checked the rom wave lists for both the 1000 and 1080 before buying my 1000, and since there were certain sounds on the 1000 that I liked, I went with it since some of the waves seemed to be missing. That said, from what I hear it is possible to load JV-80/90/1000 patches into the JV-1080 and up all the way to the 5080. Via sysex. If you have a way to load it on your end, I would be willing to send you a sysex file from my 1000.

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  5 років тому

      According to the JV-1000 manual (same as JV-90 but with sequencer), the piano 2 waves (from the Grand Piano 1 SO-PCM1-04 card) and fourteen of the percussion waves are absent from the JV-80/880. Those percussion waves include a bunch of reverse samples, a new ride cymbal, new toms, a hihat-pedal chick, a triangle, and three brush samples (slap, swish, roll), all from the SR-JV80-01 Pop exp board.

      @@eaglechildkeys Unless you need certain sounds in the JV-1000, I'd go with the XP60. It's a 61-key XP80, and has among other things more expansion slots and more than double the polyphony. I can record the midi sysex for any JV-1000 factory presets you may want and email them to you or whatever. They supposedly will load in to any XP/XV keyboard all the way up to the XV-5080. A few filter settings and fx may need to be tweaked. I can give you a link to Don Solaris' website that has info on that should you want it. Thank you for watching!

    Cool stuff! I recently got a Roland XP-30 that I'm doing areview video on and was looking up the older models out of curiosity. I may have to pick one of these or a JV-80/90 up sometime, they sound fantastic! A little more vintage and compressed than the JV-1080 and the like, I think. It's quite nice though.

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  5 років тому

      Thanks! If you want to get an older model, a JV-90 or JV-1000 is better than the JV-80. Both the 90 and 1000 have all the sounds of the JV-80 plus more, but the JV-80 does not have the other sounds. New sounds include a better piano, and lots more synth stuff. Basically sounds from one of the SO-PCM1 cards for Grand Piano 1, and the entire Contemporary Composer set. See posts here for more info (I have the dog avatar):yamahamusicians.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=11667. There was a JV-1000 Presets Bank card issued for the JV-80 but my understanding is that it is pretty rare.

    hi Max , thnk you for your awsome playing and demostration of the jv1000. is there any way to change the octave on this keboard when playing a patch to either go up or down an octave

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the complement! It isn't that easy to change octaves on the fly on the JV-1000. You can either edit the patch itself by pressing "Tune" and going to Coarse Tune and moving the sliders up and down by 12-note increments, or go to the global "Tune" page and manually shift the entire keyboard up or down a number of octaves. I wish Roland would have included transpose buttons or octave shift buttons. They don't seem to have been that common on these older boards however.

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  3 роки тому +1

      You might be able to find a Roland service center or keyboard tech who would be willing to work on it. Otherwise, I know that some parts are available from Syntaur (contact strips, after touch strips, keys), and there are people who have fixed the glue problem, though it requires disassembling the entire keybed and dissolving the glue etc. Mine either never had that issue or the previous owner fixed it before I got it. Rodgers organs from the ‘90s also have that issue, so repair techniques for their red glue-affected key beds should be similar as well. Good luck!

    • @overmanna3215
      @overmanna3215 2 роки тому

      There are videos on how to rid this issue yourself, which involves removing the keys and soaking them in drano, which doesn't effect the keys since Drano doesn't effect plastic pipes etc. But it's tedious. I've yet to try this and my red fire issue is out of control. I use it via Midi at this point keeping it tipped forward to avoid the goo getting inside the unit. I spoke to Patrick O Hearn who had his literally sent out to be hand scrape the bottom of each key. Yikes.

    • @2008alde
      @2008alde Рік тому

      @@overmanna3215 I replied to Max's other video here on the JV-1000. Aside from a very minor issue, which is a nearly inaudible hum coming from the PSU, the JV-1000 is fairly easy to work on especially disassembling it to remove the keyboard chassis. THE JV-90 and JV-80 have circuit boards that have to be unscrewed and lifted in order to get access to the screws that attach the KB chassis. The JV-1000 has this very small sub-PSB as well as the two ribbon cables. I recently overhauled mine and now the keys are all spotless with the weights back in. The only problem is that the glue did leak onto a few spots f the after touch strip. I had to improvise and place a very thin felt layer at those points but everything is working fine. As Max mentioned, Syntaur is a good resource but as time progresses, many of these parts are becoming less available. I was going to see of I can get a new after touch strip, but they don't exist but the keys do. Good luck

      It depends what you want to do with the JV-1000. I wouldn't recommend it if you want to use it as your main keyboard or layer things - you run out of polyphony really fast. However, if you're just going to use single sounds or use it for, say, synth leads or pads as a secondary keyboard (i.e. nothing with a sustain pedal over more than 4 notes), it's fine.

    I am planning to get a used Roland JV 1000 soon. But I'll love to ask if it has the Button to split the keyboard to play the bass guitar on the left side and is it able to have a dual sound button too

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  2 роки тому

      While there isn't a dedicated button for either, what you would do is create a user performance and set up your splits/layers there, then save that as a performance preset. Changing sounds once you've set up the splits and layers isn't that hard but it's not like most newer keyboards where you have a lot of graphics on screen and such - you select sounds by bank and number, by using the 16 buttons to the right of the sliders. So you sort of have to memorize how to get to which sounds (first which preset/user bank, then which set of 8, then which of the eight sounds in that set).
      I will say that the electric bass sounds aren't very strong, but if you like how they sound in this video that is exactly how they sound in real life.

      Yes, for that use, I wouldn't recommend it now. It only has 28 voices of polyphony and so layering something like a piano and a pad will bring you down to around 7 voices total. I made a custom patch that got me up to 14 notes of polyphony available, but that isn't much at all, especially if you're using the sustain pedal.

    Can this thing make some cool industrial music sounds? How versatile is it? And is it Midi friendly?

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  3 роки тому

      Hi there,
      I'm not very well versed in industrial music so I'm not sure what kind of sounds you would need. It's pretty versatile, as long as one isn't expecting acoustic instruments that are super realistic given its age. It can work in a band mix still, and some sounds are better than others, such as the strings which aren't bad at all. The synth sounds (which I haven't uploaded yet) never go out of date and are pretty good; you get 128 of them (two banks of 64). It's very midi-friendly, as you can set a global midi channel for your sounds in Patch mode for use with a computer or whatnot with single sounds, or set up a Performance in Performance mode and have up to eight sounds on their own midi channels for multitimbral usage. It's a good master controller as well in my opinion.

      OK. Have you done a factory reset? Also the selecting of sounds is done by first choosing the main bank (A,B,C,D), then one of the top row of buttons (sub-banks) (1-8), and then one of the lower row (9-16 ). Each time you press one of the upper row, it changes the sounds available to the lower row of sounds. Piano would be Bank A, sub-bank 1, and all of the lower row. Some in sub-banks 2 and 3 as well.

    Which one is your favorite? jv1000 or xp80?

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  4 роки тому +1

      That's hard. I've never played an XP-80. I have however played an XP-50 and XP-30. The XP-80 has more polyphony (64) and effects, which I think are pretty important. All patch data from the JV-1000 is compatible with the XP-80. However, there is a slight difference in sound between the two. The 1000 has a warmer sound to it. However the XP-80 has more options for expansion. So, I would say I like the XP-80 better if it's going to be your main board. JV-1000 if you really like the sounds it has and it's just a secondary keyboard or one of many you own. The JV-1000 is not well-suited as a main board at all anymore (you can't really layer without having very low polyphony). Thanks for watching!

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  6 років тому +1

      Hi! Are you referring to the ragtime parts that I play with the patch "Country Bar"? If so, I learned it pretty much by ear, following along with slowed-down midi files of ragtime works when I was little. Once I sort of knew the notes, then my ear took over. Now (since I read music etc much better) I just listen to a song a few times, figure out what key it's in, and go from there. I listened to a lot of the Lawrence Welk show with Big Tiny Little and JoAnn Castle too here on UA-cam. I've also used Pandora to find old ragtime/early jazz recordings. I have the sheet music for some songs too, which helped greatly in figuring out what the actual parts were. But mostly by ear for that style, and listening to lots of recordings. I never had a teacher that appreciated that style of music.

      @@eaglechildkeys Sounds good. The two songs that I actually played sections of: 10:27 - Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue, and 10:41 - Fido Followed Felix. The other snippets are just chord progressions typical to that style of music. New Orleans Jazz also fits in that category, for your reference. Thanks!

    What is the best
    Roland xp 50 or Roland Jv1000

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  3 роки тому +1

      The XP-50 is probably better - more polyphony and more expandability via SR-JV expansion boards. The XP-50 is basically a JV-1080 with a sequencer in keyboard form. There is a slight difference with the filter structure on the two boards, but otherwise the XP-50 would be better unless you want a certain thing from the JV-1000. That said the JV-1000 has a bunch of faders and 76 keys.

      Hi Antonio,
      I'm afraid I don't have the demo disk, or any other disks. I bought the keyboard used and nothing else came with it - just the keyboard (and the VE-GS1 board that was installed).
      You might want to ask on the GearSlutz forum - there was a gentlemen there with a JV-1000 under the username "temnov" who might be able to help you. You can save your own custom sounds by using the "Store" button on the right side of the screen and going from there. There is a user bank that has 64 free slots.

    I just got saw your reply. Thanks for getting back to me. Atleast you are still in the states, and 4 days travel im presuming you mean by car? which would mean by train? it would be 3 or less, and by plane an hour or two. BUT i wouldnt want you to fly. its just not safe.. Train is better. but a road trip can be fun also! ANYWAY i think you are missing the bigger picture here!!! : / the bigger picture is about you possibly playing on 3 full albums of fresh new music! being on 3 records, and touring and performing locally with a band! And making some money, and having a great time while doing it all! : / One step at a time! the first step is to talk about what im doing and what im offering, and if you might be interested in THAT??? then we can go forward. but firs things first, we need to talk more.. is there someplace i can contact you? an e mail or? IF YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS? If not thats ok too. But you should just say youre not interested.. Your reply uses the distance as a reason that you are not interested. BUT that really isnt a reason you wouldnt be able to be a part of this. IF YOU REALLY WANTED TO PLAY. So that is the question here.. Let me know.. Thanks again.....

      Hi, thanks again for reaching out. It’s really not practical for me I’m afraid. It isn’t really an issue of the big picture here. While I do love to play, I’ve been established in my area for over ten years, and I have commitments through next year for gigs as well as a band, assuming that things can return to some semblance of normal. Plus full-time University and the like starting in two weeks. I’m afraid I will have to decline your offer. However, I can recommend that you take a look at the Musicplayer Network’s Keyboard Corner forum. There are a lot of great keyboardists on there, in various parts of the US and other countries. Maybe someone there can help you out. I do appreciate you taking the time to ask me, and I’m sorry that it won’t work out. Best of luck to you, and have fun!
      Max

    this is the sound módule jv1010?

    • @MaxThompsonMusic
      @MaxThompsonMusic  5 років тому +1

      Actually, the JV-1010 is a newer device, in the JV-1808/2080 series, released in 1999. The JV-1000 (what I am playing) is one generation earlier/older, roughly equivalent to a JV-880 module with a few cards installed, made in 1993. www.vintagesynth.com/roland/jv1010.php www.vintagesynth.com/roland/jv-1000 This page is a good resource as it shows the timeline of Roland products with descriptions of each. www.rolandus.com/blog/2014/02/19/roland-synth-chronicle-1973-through-2013/

      Hi there,
      To my knowledge those songs were only available on the demo disk that came from the factory with the JV-1000. Someone might have them online, but I do not. Ask at the RolandClan forums, Musicplayer Network Keyboard Corner, and look through the SynthZone website links (use the Wayback Machine from the Internet Archive to access some of those old sites if they don't come up now). Good luck!
