@Jamsteo you should have made some torches it stops monsters spawns monsters can't spawn on high light levels and also yea if there are monsters nearby you aren't able to sleep

The whistling is the man from the fog. He can randomly become aggressive and can climb walls and such. He only spawns at night. The midnight lurker spawns in the dark, but does not despawn in the light. The one who watches can spawn whenever it wants.
Edit: the man from the fog is also the reason why you can't sleep and why your bed breaks.

Btw I'm pretty sure there is a mod (it may be optifine) that significantly decreases visual darkness but doesn't increase the actual brightness so it doesn't make your game look horrible (manually increasing brightness usually looks bad). If you have trouble finding it, lmk and I'll try to link it.

You should try out from another world. Also if you read this comment. My personal advice to surviving is to either create a skybase. Or a raft on the ocean. Because the alien things can tunnel. Although i personally have not tried building a base out of materials such as obsidian to see if they cannot tunnel through that. You have around half a day (5 mins i think in minecraft time) to gather materials before the things enter the world via a spaceship crashing. However from what ive read the spore mod is more well balanced. (Although i cannot confirm due to myself not playing with it.) So that could be another good choice if you wanna try one of those mods out. The sculk horde gives you the most time to prepare. As you have to manually start the infection in survival via discovering a sculk tomb i believe its called. And lastly scape and run parasites from my first few attempts is prob one of the harder ones. A Scape and run veteran suggested building a bunker deep underground made of iron and later obsidian. Also the flesh that hates exists. But all i know is that its an innaccurate attempt to turn scp 610 into a infection mod. Could still be interesting though. But yea thats all the infection mods im currently aware of.
Also if your reading this the things usually make a loud noise when doing things. Although sometimes they are completely silent. For example. Once i was trying to gather wood to expand my raft. When i suddenly saw a thing barreling towards me from the treeline silently. This is also why i suggest always having a boat if your aboveground. Because if your suddenly ambushed you can flee to the water. I have also not tested towering up to escape the things. So that could possibly work aswell.
Also the things can assimilate animals. But assimilated animals will usually act as ambushers. Waiting for other things to either attack or get close to them before changing into another alien thing
And also campfires can be very useful for saving on coal and charcoal. Because they can cook and if your running a thirst mod like i am purify water. Meaning that you can focus all your coal and charcoal on making torches smelting and whatever else you need them for.
Also bonus chests are useful for the inital rush for resources.
Ive also heard of a mod called wyrms of nyrus. It can be paired with scape and run to create a terrible experience. I however have not played it due to it being on modrinth. I have however seen a video series from a channel called rotch gaming playing with the mod on. From my observations going underground is a good idea.
