@@K-RossReacts My own comment keeps disappearing, I was wanting to say Great review ... but it had to be as this is an exceptional album from start to finish.🦊Also yes, that was a sax solo in 'The Legend'🎷... of course it was, they surprised us all with that.
Songs that might impress you even more than 'The Legend' ....
'The One - Stairway to Living Legend' (that will be blocked if you try to react without lots of filters etc over the video).
      'Monochrome' live at PIA Arena
'Monochrome' piano version on The First Take
'Shine' live at Legend M - in my opinion (for what it's worth) Su-metal's finest vocal performance to date.

Great reaction, thank you! It‘s pretty late here, and I intended to just watch it until the second song and then go to sleep, but I couldn‘t stop. And as expected, The Legend left me in tears in the end. The guitar solo building up to the saxophone, culminating in Su‘s soft „We are The Legend“ always gets me. I hope some day I‘ll experience a live show ending with this song. It will leave me on the floor.
But you still have one step left: If you‘d like to hear Su‘s voice at its best, please check out the piano version of „Monochrome“ from the UA-cam channel „The First Take“. It left me speechless, even after I had already been adoring her for years.

Light and darkness has become one of my favourite songs by them. It's such a poppy sound but there's so much dissonance in it, the rhythm changes are so jarring that the second chorus still catches me off guard, and the double fakeout drop in the third chorus is great. No section of the song repeats without significant changes and even the soundscape sounds really unique.

Babymetal's concept album 'the other one' feels like a work of art in its entirety.
Listening through the songs in this order, from 'Metal kingdom' to 'the legend', is pleasantly enjoyable.
Compared to their past songs, each song lacks impact a little bit, but they are full of the mature charm of the girls.
For many metal fans who could not get close to the girls because of their too young age, this may conversely be a more mature content that is easier to accept.

Also, I get you’re doing the studio for the album review, but when you get a chance, check out the actual live (with live audio). The live Kami Band sound makes a drastic difference! Especially for songs like Light and Darkness.

Glad your back have enjoyed all babymetal reactions so far. And this is a fantastic set of reactions. 👍👍
I think you will also enjoy the Metal Galaxy album it has some of my favourites. And you may be surprised by the first 2 albums.
But if you think this is good with just the studio songs. Wait till you see the full show and all that comes with it, cinematic intros, lore, the crowd and just the live sound of the girls and the kami band.
The legend performances at both Babymetal Returns and Begins are phenomenal, highly recommend them. If I had to pick one, it would be the returns version.
THE ONE is another song in the same vein, very epic and grand in scale.
But I will recommend the song Brand New Day Budokan 2021 Live

Really liked your breakdown of each song as you were listening to them. I only recently got into BABYMETAL but I have quickly grown to love all of their music. I understand your distaste for the higher pitch backing vocals. Not everything can be for everyone. I will say, I think that seeing the live versions of those songs and watching a couple interviews with the girls might soften your opinion on them a bit. I'm glad you enjoyed THE OTHER ONE as much as you did. It was the first BABYMETAL album that I listened to in full and it is definitely their most mature and consistent album. Funnily enough, I think a lot of fans were disappointed with it precisely because they missed those cuter elements. I went into it without any expectations and I absolutely adore it. It hits all the right notes for me as a fan of most rock and electronic subgenres. I hear Bring Me The Horizon in MAYA. Infected Mushroom in METALIZM. Even a bit of Circa Survive in the breakdown of THE LEGEND (with that Sax solo as the cherry on top). I also enjoy plenty of pop music so I don't mind when they branch away from heavier influences in the slightest.
I share your love of THE LEGEND and I think it may be criminally underrated among BABYMETAL fans. The subtleties in the production are absolutely incredible and Su's performance is simply stunning. "It's TIMELESS, and SPACELESS, beyond the stars!" gets me every single time. I'm not sure if you have listened to Metal Galaxy in it's entirety yet but I think you will enjoy that album as well. My favorite BABYMETAL album is constantly shifting between THE OTHER ONE and Metal Galaxy. Whereas THE OTHER ONE is really consistent in terms of it's tone, Metal Galaxy is more like a double album with two distinct halves. The first half being more upbeat and the second half aligning a bit more with the tone of THE OTHER ONE. I personally love both halves but I think you're very likely to enjoy the second half at the very least based on this reaction. Specifically the final three songs, which are known as the Trilogy of Lights. I'd love to see your thoughts on the whole album at some point though. Brand New Day might be my favorite BABYMETAL track and it is very different from anything else they've done.

Great review! If you love The Legend, it's worth checking out the live vid from Babymetal Begins: Black Night. It was the last night as Su and Moa being a duo, and only the two of them performed it. It was like they were performing to each other to close out the chapter, quite moving for me.

Apologies for the wall of text to follow, but I had thoughts as I was watching.
The Other One is a concert album about the ten parallel worlds that Babymetal visited when then left earth during their hiatus and traveled the Metal galaxy. In interviews, they described the concept as the Babymetal of ten parallel universes; sort of a "what if?" Babymetal had been different. The press release explaining the concept for the album said: "Last year Babymetal were 'sealed' from the world after a successful 10-year journey. In April 2022, The Other One restoration project began to recover the Babymetal we never knew existed within a virtual world called the Metalverse. A total of 10 songs have been discovered within The Other One restoration project, with each song representing a unique theme based on 10 separate parallel worlds that they have discovered. The upcoming concept album features these all-new tracks for us to experience the other Babymetal story that no one ever knew about."
I've sorted my comments but the relevant song:-
    Metal Kingdom:
This video was filmed at Babymetal Returns on the 28th and 29th of January 2023 at Mkauhari Messe in Chiba, Tokyo. The crowd for this performance was around 15,000. I was at the show and it was every bit as mindblowing as it looks on video. It was my first live Babymetal show and to say that it made an impression on me is an understatement. The stage set up for the show was wild. There were stages at either end of the arena and one stage had a pair of huge doors with fox heads on them, and at the other end, the Kami band were set up. Running down the middle of the arena was a raised platform that bisected the hall and along that ran the moving elevated stage that they spent most of the show on; the crowd were in blocks on either side of the central platform. The oval shaped stage on the track could move up and down the arena, and lift about 20 feet into the air, so that at different times during the show, the girls were performing right in front of all parts of the crowd. The whole set up was pretty bonkers.
When the show began, the eyes of the foxes on the gates glowed red, and the doors opened and bright white light and effects smoke poured out, then the thrones slid forward into the arena backlit by the white lights with Su and Moa seated on two of the thrones (the third one was empty, hinting at what was to come), and then MK started. Not going to lie, I had chills.
I adore this song because it just allows Su's pure vocal prowess to shine completely. Su is one of only two vocalists who can bring me to tears (the other is Floor Jansen), so any song where she just gets to let loose is magic to me. MK is probably in my top 5 Babymetal songs as a result.
    Divine Attack:
Metal Kingdom and Divine Attack are the openers both for the album, and for the live performances at Babymetal Returns, so I think the two songs are meant to go together. To me, Metal Kingdom is the build up, and Divine Attack is the payoff. They have played the two songs separately as well, though MK gets played slightly more often than DA.
DA is also the first song that Su-metal has writing credits for. Apparently she first heard the demo and immediately put her hand up to write the lyrics for it. She'd long expressed a desire to be involved in the song writing process, and now she has, so hopefully she will get to do more in the future.
The live version with choreo at Babymetal Begins is worth a watch.
Regarding the childlike vocals, I can certainly get that it puts some people off, but I see it very much as a double edged sword. They were a big part of the Babymetal gimmick in the early days, and I highly doubt that Gimme Chocolate goes viral without the "Atatata taata taatatata zukkyun!!", "Watatata taata taatatata dokkyun!" vocals from Yui and Moa. Although it grates on some people, it's an integral part of what made them famous. For fans, we love the old cheezy songs they did as kids and appreciate it when they bring them back; when they played "Iine" at Clear Night for the first time in six years the crowd lost their minds. In fact some fans have actually fallen off Babymetal because they have matured and don't sound as kawaii as they used to. For some parts of the audience, that was a key part of the appeal.
    Mirror, Mirror:
This video uses the studio audio, but the performance was filmed at "Babymetal Begins - The Other One: Black & Night & Clear Night" at PIA Arena MM in Yokohama on April 1st and 2nd 2023. It was the world premiere performance of the song. I was at this show as well and it went extremely hard. I also got to see Mirror, Mirror three more times when they toured Australian in June.
The American Kami band played at this show, so it was Chris Kelly (guitars), CJ Masciantonio (guitars), Clint Tustin (bass) and Anthony Barone (drums). This was right at the start of the 2023 world tour, which the west Kami played all 92 shows of. There is quite a bit of prog/djent kind of stuff going on with time signature changes and it's a pretty technical, heavy song.
    Maya:
This is from the same concert as Mirror Mirror, but as you said, this one has the live audio as it was released to promote the BluRay release of the concert. Maya is a popular song among fans and seem to be a favourite from the album, and it's certainly one of my favourite tracks. I was lucky enough to see this one live four times in 2023.
Obviously it comes down to personal preference, but I know a lot of Babymetal fans find the relative lack of vocal parts for Moa and Momoko on TOO disappointing, so a lot of people really like the contrasting vocals in their songs.
Apparently I'm going to have to check out Dreamcatcher...
    Time Wave:
This one definitely has some EDM elements to it. Of all the non-metal styles that Babymetal likes to draw on, EDM is probably the most prominent, particularly on this album. They've only played this one live four times, which is kind of a shame, because it's got kind of a different energy to a lot of their other songs. When I first heard it, it didn't grab me, but it's grown on me with more listens, and I like that some songs take time to really sink in more than others.
    Believing:
Probably my favourite track on the album due to how djenty and dirty sounding it is. It's notable because it's one of only four Babymetal songs all in English. The vocal effect they're using is called Vocaloid. Vocaloid is a popular vocal manipulation tool in Japanese music. The J-pop/metal band PassCode are probably the most notable users of Vocaloid.
This song is interesting because apparently it was originally recorded about five years ago, and almost make it onto the Metal Galaxy album. In an interview, they described it as "a duet with their past selves". Lyrically, it's also interesting, since it seems to be addressing the fan criticism that they have changed too much over the years; it seems to be saying that they had to change and is appealing to the fans who feel disaffected to come with them on this new journey they are now on.
    Metalizm:
This one was also at the PIA Arena MM shows in April. The effect of the visuals when you're in the arena was spectacular. I remember watching it live and thinking, "This is going to look awesome on BluRay". Fans have dubbed this song "Middle Eastern Pystrance Metal", which seems about as good a definition as any. It definitely leans hard into the EDM influence.
    And yes, Su-metal is Queen.
    Monochrome:
The standout song of the album and the one that has taken it's place as a staple part of their live show setlist, they played it at 93 out of the 94 shows they played in 2023. The live version at PIA Arena was a breathtaking performance that I feel lucky to have gotten to experience. The "Piano version" on the First Take on UA-cam is also well worth watching for a stripped back performance that really makes Su's vocal skills stand out.
    Light & Darkness:
One of the songs that doesn't get as much hype as it should. I didn't get it at first, but the more I have listened to it, the more I've come to appreciate how ambitious it is. It's a shame that it's only been performed live the three times, twice at Makuhari in January 2023 and once in April at PIA, but I got to be there for all three performances.
    The Legend:
Probably the most underrated song on the album, it was a spectacular finish at the shows in Jan 23 at Makuhari and a beautiful opener at Black Night. Like a couple of the others I mentioned, it's only had three live performances. It seems to be going for the same kind of epic sweeping vibe of The One.
Yes! That's was a saxophone solo! In 2023! =) Koba (Babymetal's producer) is a massive music nerd. You know he wanted to do a homage to 80's sax solos somewhere.
Also, respect to a fellow Fear Factory fan.
The album overall seems to get mixed reviews from fans. The ones who are happy to accept Babymetal going in whatever creative direction they want to seem to love it, but the fans that really miss the eccentric kawaii chaos of the first two albums seem to feel that it's a bit too conventional and "safe". Personally, I think it's a fantastic album and I'm fully onboard with the "mature Babymetal". At this stage, I rank the albums: Metal Resistance > The Other One = Babymetal > Metal Galaxy.
Personal Babymetal masterpiece for me is still "Tales of the Destinies", Babymetal's tribute to Dream Theater.
Thanks for the album review. I think that when it comes to a concept album like this it's important to examine it as a single cohesive work rather than simply as a collection of single songs unrelated to each other.

Thanks for this reaction, great to see you back, it's always great to still be blown away by Babymetal. The first video you saw was from the very first song of the very first concert (well, the recording might be from day 2, as they did 2 days, but that how they opened the first day too) after their hiatus and less and more restricted performance era because of covid.
The second video you reacted to was the song which was first released months before that, as the first single of the new album.
15:00 you did say at the start of the video, your favorite Babymetal song is Megitsune, which has them too. 🙂 Yes, their are songs where it works better or worse, but in some songs it does fit like Megitsune, Karate after the first part. Just re-listen you can probably say it works best there, in part because they really are chants.
    37:41 I never noticed it's off-beat. silly me
37:48 what is intriguing to me, she seems to sing it live, standing very still, highly unusual for Su-metal. Like it's some kind of requirement for the effect.
40:49 Babymetal just loves surprising us 🙂
I definitely recommend watching/reacting to the live performance of Monochrome and maybe First Take piano version as well.
This album is missing the live participation songs, but Babymetal surprised us and released a single after this album which does exactly that, similar to Megitsune, etc.
Personally, I think the crowd participation songs are Babymetal's bread and butter, but their big shows with epic atmospheric cinematic performances are amazing of course.
So please react to: Babymetal Metali live on their official channel released only a few weeks ago.
I think it's what makes Babymetal live so amazing, they can deliver over that whole spectrum.

excellent video dude, this album is just one banger after another, and I know what you mean about child-like voices, the Pink Floyd classic "Another Brick in the Wall" is totally ruined by having children singing about not needing education and hey teacher leave us kids alone, food for thought maybe?

    • @K-RossReacts
      @K-RossReacts  4 місяці тому +2

Haha fair point! However I’m not against children singing! Another brick in the wall isn’t a heavy metal track, so there isn’t such a contrast from high-pitched child-like vocals. Also the kids voices in another brick in the wall work so well because of the attitude that they are directed with. The BABYMETAL childish vocals, I’m talking about sound well…’baby-like’ at times. I see your point. But it’s a different story there imo.

    • @Marty-Metal
      @Marty-Metal 4 місяці тому +5

@@K-RossReacts but in all of the BM songs where there is child-like vocals, it's because of the story they are telling, for example, in the song "Catch Me if You Can" there is a demon voice asking children if they are ready and the two children answer the demon, "No Not Yet" and another example is somewhat self biographical, Doki Doki Morning (their 1st song) kids are scrambling in the morning because their running late for school, or fighting over snacks and dancing under a mirror ball late into the "Uki Uki Midnight" or the chaotic dream of a young girl venturing into the scary world of metal. I am just saying I had the same problem with child-like voices at first, but the contrast with the heavy music and the story telling is just undeniable. just don't close that door until you feel the entire story.

In my opinion Su is one of the best vocalists around and just gets more awsome with maturity . Just thought i mention that bit you liked was just Su doing a gasp of breath in to the microphone ❤ 😃

For me, except Maya, all songs in this album are PER-FECT. The more they grow, the more their talent grows with them 🤩🤩. Hope they'll have the international fame they deserve.

Good album reaction👊🏽⚡️ If you haven’t checked the song, “Kingslayer” by Bring me the horizon, featuring Babymetal you’ll enjoy it. There is the official lyric video and a recently released live version with both bands in Tokyo. 🦊🤘🏾

The Other One album has different nuances and feelings in each song, basically it's the best. It's just that I don't like the mirror² song, I think it's a bit unsuitable for SUu-metal to sing live. Hopefully in the future the quality of the studio songs can be even better.

To be fair about Su is almost 2 years older than the 2 other girls (Yui and Moa) so ofcourse she sounded a bit more mature even when they started. I really don't think Yui and Moa having those childlike voices was a musical choice early on rather than that just being the way they sounded because they were like 11 years old. I think you are correct that later on they seemed to make their voices even more higher pitched than they normally were (maybe they wanted to stay on brand with how their first songs sounded)
Also love how different BABYMETAL songs resonate with different people. For example The Legend isn't even in the top 30 of babymetal songs for me (it's still a good song)

You really, really, REALLY need to do yourself a favor and check out the Monochrome live at PIA arena. You'll love what they do there I think. For me, my favorite songs off this album would be LIght and Darkness, The Legend, and Monochrome, with Divine attack very close to Monochrome. I do like every song on this album although I think Metalizm is probably my least favorite off the album, don't hate it, just my least favorite compared to all the other songs. Su doesn't really do much vocally in it and so thats why I don't like it as much as the other songs.

Great reaction This is a fantastic album - but to be fair BABYMETAL are incapable of producing anything else. 👍
