Marble Mountain, a themed marble machine (marble run)

  • Marble Mountain is a large marble machine still under construction. It consists of 25 sections that mesh together to form one kinetic sculpture. Every element is themed (or will be upon completion) to an aspect of my life or to something that I find interesting. Some of the elements include a roller coaster, ski jump, Times Square, Lombard Street, and a skatepark. It took 3 years to get to this point of being able to turn it on and watch it go, and I will continue to work on it and get it fully completed.

A detailed history of the progress can be found at:
    / marblemountainproject
    Facts:
    -It has a footprint of 12' x 8' and stands 8' tall
-The material of the tracks and supports consist almost entirely of wood
-Everything is custom-made from materials bought mostly from craft and hardware stores (mainly Michaels and Home Depot)
-The lift is 11 feet long, holds 90 marbles at once, and rotates at 1 revolution per second (60 RPM)
-It takes at least 250 marbles to keep it running without delay, but looks better with 300
-There are 32 possible paths for the marbles
-There are 14 rockers that distribute the marbles onto the different paths
-The first year and a half of construction happened in my apartment before moving to a small warehouse
-The original design was smaller and not as cool, so a redesign took place making it much bigger and morphed into a half-conical shape with the lift right down the middle
-I do know how much it cost to make thus far but even my wife doesn't know that number
-It takes just under an hour to set up or tear down Marble Mountain
-Since it is modular, I could remove a section and rebuild it as something else as long as the tracks matched up with the other pieces

I wish there was a gyroscopic, marble-sized camera so we could experience this run in first person

    First off
    That’s cool
It was made even better by not having music playing
I like hearing the marbles make noise
That’s the best part in my opinion

This needs to be displayed in a museum! Or in a really big mall! And it doesn’t need to be dismantled to become a world landmark!

Maybe in a childrens museum, so kids could interact with the marbles and put them in other locations.

Akron Children's hospital in Ohio had a marble tower. But not as good as this one. Maybe you should consider asking to put it in a children's hospital. It would make a lot of children happy.

Also, some quick curiosity questions (I build chain reaction machines):
      1. How or with what did you make the track splitters?
      2. Are you just using super glue to hold everything together?
      3. Do you cut all this wood yourself out of big wood boards?
      4. Why are you so awesome?!?!

    • @BenTardif
      @BenTardif  8 років тому +8

+TheVarietyGuy Ha! Thanks! To answer your questions:
1- The splitters are made of wood just like everything else. A stationary nail holds the splitter in place as it teeter-totters back and forth for each marble.
2- Wood glue. Pounds and pounds of wood glue.
3- Michaels carries 12"x24" ply at various thicknesses as well as thin and bendable balsa wood. That is a large portion of the wood used. Other larger boards/planks were purchased at home depot.
      4- Just cuz

As a steel ball, you can go bowling, play mini golf, visit the Great Wall in China, go down Lombard street in San Francisco, take a trip across the Golden Gate Bridge, to jump off an epic ramp with your friends all the way down through the Disneyland castle to go up a screw ramp to go down the Swiss alps to do it all over again! What a day to be a steel ball!

Imagine if the marbles were functional hamster-ball-like vehicles in which we could sit within stabilized, yet still capable of feeling the motion, of course. It would be quite intriguing, though certainly it would have to be readjusted slightly, as scaling it up will cause the physics to change a bit. Probably that part where the marbles build up before heading off a giant ramp will be the scariest portion of it considering how high they fly into the air. Though, assuming its safe, would you want to try it? Hahaha... I might... maybe... or I'd get too scared.

Some parts would be modified, and that wouldn't function the same, anyways, as the marbles wouldn't have their weight to scale, but modification would still be required.

I have been a marble fan since I was 5. I'm currently 21 so yes I am intoxicated (cheers!). I have never had the money or time as a kid because I was poor and scrounging to help out. This has brought a tear to my eye. Your creativity is a blessing and you have warned my subscribe . Thank you

Btw I love how you built this. In sections mounted together by the minimum amount of bolts. My grandfather and I love carpentry and we.designed my bed by interlacing pieces whilst the head board holds only 6 bolts. Pure genius you are to build complicity with simplicity

You are a genius my friend best marble run I've ever seen I'm imagining how long did it take you to build this epic masterpiece? And my favourite section is either the Golden Gate Bridge, the roller coaster section, the wooden bridge The castle or the skiing section seriously words cannot express how amazing this is fantastic work
