Marble Conveyor Belt Completed! - Marble Machine X #78
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 кві 2019
- The Marble Conveyor Belt is Completed and it delivers Perfectly.
- lifts 8 marbles per crank turn.
- thanks to it being driven by ratchets and pistons, it makes a short halt to load and unload the marbles, on exactly the same spot every time.
- The pistons are connected to the crank shaft with a 2:1 gear reduction which means that the conveyor belt go in time with the music, and in half time. I can even use the mechanical sounds from the ratchets and the marbles climbing the fish stair to create parts of the beats.
- I only had one kick drum channel up and running so the kick drum plays on 2-4 like a snare normally would. Sounds a little strange but I just made this piece of music to demonstrate the concepts are working. (no music you hear in the videos are going to be used for the album, its quick and dirty functional pieces for the videos only)
- Its been a journey but we are now on our way. Again.
- the throw of the pistons s 40mm, the pitch of the chain is 15,875x2 mm, an imperial value, and it happens to be exactly twice the marble diameter. All this makes it possible to lift exactly one row of marbles per crank turn. The ratchets move 40 mm but only grabs onto the chain to move it exactly 31,75mm per crank turn.
The carriers are flame polished cnc:ed acrylic
- The chain was custom made in Japan and I waited 5 months for it to be delivered. haha. Of all the time consuming darlings on the MMX I love the conveyor belt /fish stair combo the most.
- the marbles looks like they are stuck over the demagnetiser wheel, this is by design, as soon new marbles come into the pipes from below, the marbles are slowly pushed over the demag wheel which ensures perfect demagnetisation.
- thanks for watching and believing in the project, good luck with everything that you are doing!
Martin

- You wanna be a musician or an engineer?
- Both... oh, and video editor and UA-camr!
It was a massive let down.
Put UA-camr on a resume and you a guaranteed to NOT get a job in the US
emusicianeer
The sound of the belt moving is already quite the beat of its own.
It's great at keeping a beat, but you can't make a full song from rhythm alone. Still, it's _great_ at keeping a beat; I can't wait to see what comes out of this machine once Wintergatan adds the rest of the instruments on.
I would like the first song on the new marble machinex to be the first song from old machine
@@Muflon_Wladca_Sanu We will get it but Martin said it won't be the very first song. MMX will get it's own theme first.
@@Agedude great!!!
i guess
Rewatching the series over the last few days, I can TOTALLY understand now why Martin has redesigned and rebuilt so many parts of the machine over and over again. It's because this man is dedicated to give us, the viewers and by extension the audience, the absolute best machine he can possibly make. You can see now rewatching these videos where all those small failures have been adding up- machine wobble, marble clogs, marble divider problems, release gates, all those things combine to make a subpar machine. Not a subpar machine if the goal was to play it a bunch of times on film and hope one take is flawless, like the last machine. But a subpar machine if the goal is to have a >99.9999% reliable touring instrument that will give us the best damn show that Martin feels compelled to deliver. I believed then, and I still believe now. We're rooting for you Martin, you are a god damn inspiration!
I was brought to tears when I heard him say this in his most recent video,
and I finally understood what I had previously thought was borderline madness:

*_"It's perfect. ... Perfection exists."_*
It is like God hired the Devil to stir things up. And then once in a while we are given someone like Martin to show us what is possible.
Egypt had the Pyramids. Today we get to watch the Architect of MMX in action.
would love to be a single ball bearing doing a full lap of this wonder machine
This is his life work, his magnum opus. Of course he would want it to be as perfect as possible.
This dude is legitimately revolutionary when it comes to music. Hes brilliant. Making excellent music, in an absolutely unthinkable way for the present day. Absolutely awesome.

Especially now we have community on his side
The precision level is absurdly perfect. A work of a genius. An engineer and a musician highly skilled in one man.
He's working on the mad scientist thing....and doing pretty good.

@@SearthKoz ok so for you what is the right use
To me it's like in this situation he could have just said "both"
Instead if the question would be like "what instruments do you play"(not talking about the video)
Then it would make sense to put a "yes"
No, it’s right.
Music engineer.
I’m reminded of the DaVinci quote “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. That may be true but complexity has a beauty and elegance all its own.
That bounce off the kick drum to a small funnel/receiver is really impressive. I'll bet THAT took a lot of tuning to get the bounce just right.
Oh my sweet summer child
Yes maybe a small funnel is in order as I saw some miss or bounce out of the pipe.
I thought he was gonna start playing the Marble Machine song for a brief moment before I remembered his machine isn’t fully ready yet,
However if there’s any first song he should play once it’s ready. It needs to be Pipe Dream
NintendoBrother I was also so ready for it! Hahah
Me too haha. Or at least the clack of the first lever
I would actually like to see a whole new MMX song for its debut, like a deserved victory hymn for completing it. But there should definitely be a performance of the original Marble machine song, just for nostalgia and to honor what laid the foundations to this awesome project.
@@pitri_hub I'm sure martin will do that considering it was such a popular song. But maybe a extra after the concerts because of the 2 new albums new music
Forget Pipe dream, this right here is Cog Dream.
As someone who’s been watching Martin since the beginning, it’s breathtaking to see all his efforts come to fruition. I can’t imagine the emotions he feels right now.
DoodleChaos no way you're here
I literally just watched your video xD (beat craft 2)
Probably like: “ye this is good, but how about I take it out and improve it even more.”
In the beginning, I thought the most it would take him to design and make it was a year. I'm glad I was wrong. More videos were made of the process.
I'm afraid if there's like an earthquake or something and it breaks
The machine is so different compared to what it looks like now.
i know right
this old one is the *actual* MMX
what we’re witnessing these days is the MMX Pro (or MMY y’all name it lol)
it does look so different than now, and honestly the new ones looks more efficient looking and aesthetic than this.
I was shocked! The 2021 version is as different from this one as this is from the original marble machine. Even if some parts like the conveyor itself seem to have stood the test of time.
I was just thinking that. Had to stop and say goodbye to the beautiful old marble divider again.
I took a year brake form watching and I'm just here like "where did everything go?" This isn't the marble machine x anymore. Its something entirely different
Гений-механики!!!
Действительно, не возможно представить кааак, как это все работает, еще и так молодечно, гений✨

LOL ROFL HA HA!
LMFAO!
I actually imagined Wintergatan say "Hold my marble's" 😂
man, this is the heartbeat of the machine. It's finally alive!
Ladies and Gentlemen of the world: the Marble Machine X is complete enough to have a Musical Pulse!
Makes you think, that it is basically no different from a human body (other than thinking) each object has a role in a machine, same as a body and you could often hear machines live, this is why I love engineering!
Wow amazing! finaly after following this journey and your journey for manymany years from detektivbyran to this. This build has so many tiny details and clever solution a true collabrational effort of the entire internet.
In a few years this will be called the singularity.

Absolutely stunning. The amount of complex tolerances between each notes rhythm from the machine itself, the amount of time it must take to work the equations out for the notes to ay at the right sequence, and all the trial and error to produce this magnificent natural sound from such a Victorian Era meets Steam punk build is just amazing. Keep building good sir.
Just love how the machine noises are parts of the music

@@user-pj1ec5om5g you're wrong, like this he showed us that's more intelligent than you think, he kept noises because he knew how to use them properly (and those noises can't be removed because they're part of the machine), the only way could be with editing but he didn't do that (imo better like so :D)

We will never forget "8 marbles per crank turn"...
Wintergatan I would be pleased if you could make those marbles exiting demagnetizer to go more freely. What I've seen it isn't enough slope for them and they are stopping a while after leaving demagnetizer. Please repair this. :-)
it's so beautiful 🤩
I can't help but notice that one spot on the drum that keeps getting blacker with grease each time a marble bounces. Do you have a plan to keep the acrylics and instruments clean?
Man job great
This is clearly an unusual way to create great music, not in tradition but sounds much cooler than the music being created nowadays. This is a completely different approach of creating good music using an uncommon instrument. Hats off to Martin 👍👍👍

Martin, I was deeply moved by this video. My eyes welled up and all. Your epic project is clearly nearing completion. All the best. Bless you, man.
I really hate that you gave up on this machine. The need for perfection really took away from what is an amazing piece of musical art
На это действо можно смотреть и слушать бесконечно!! Просто завораживает... ☺️
If this happens when the machine isnt complete, imagine when It is
Yeah! It's just a fraction of MMX's potential and it's already pretty fucking amazing! Truly a modern masterpiece!
There is no doubt, Martin is a genius
This Guy is awesome
But the video title says completed
@@vikrantsingh47 the marble conveyer is complete not the machine.
This is what I imagine a steampunk bionic heart beat sounds like. Whirring gears, perfectly timed deep thumps, smaller clicks as valves flick open and closed. Pumping coolant around the synthetic body. Or maybe a music box brought to life from a spell/curse.
omg a intro that lasted 2 minutes and 55 seconds that has to be a world record
This is probably the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen in my life
This guy has a creepy high level of skill.
Precisely!
Its like the new Da Vinci-Beethoven

I didn't realise I could be put into such a trance-like state. This video completely mesmerised me.
ASMR
same
Ditto
Me too! I have been watching his videos for nearly a year, as each part came together. But to see it all working you can see what a true mechanical marvel it is. There is just so much to take in!
You lost your marbles, aye?
I love all music. In all its forms it is a universal language. This is by far the most beautiful and creative way I have seen and heard it made.
I feel like I'm witnessing the true heart of Dr Who's time machine. This z gorgeous ❤🕊️
A 7 and a half minute ASMR MMX video that I didn’t know I needed until now
Dude, now i need it to sleep this night T.T
I knew I needed it very much.
feeling hypnotized by that rotation
Why tf you have the guts to edit this comment? smh
2:16 - 2:30 "You are asleep" with that motion
*During the break*
Me: *Listen to this*
Teacher: What are you listening to?
Me: I have just discovered that.
*Give this to my teacher*
Teacher:" Marbelous"
Cassini 990 ;-) Very marbelous indeed!
the the whole class started clapping
What you said doesn't make any sense.
They're not marbles. They're ball bearings or steel balls.
@@suprememasteroftheuniverse Then why title says marbles.
Очень здорово, интересно и необычно! Сказка рождается и приходит в дом сама!😍
It must be cool to make something, knowing that it's going to spend the next few centuries in a museum.
5:58 Murpy's Law - Marble didn't find the hole
The rest - Perfect, Martin
I'm curious as to what variables would even cause them to land in different spots. . . I guess the machine shaking from all those moving parts would be enough.
Entropy will be denied!
@@normang3668 Probably just the vibration of the machine, you can see it jiggling around. From what we seen the real collection pipes are going to be much bigger so not a problem. The real problem is at 2:50, you can see one jumped out of the lift once it was already in the second row on the right. Maybe just a little clear wiper that goes up a inch or two for the first bit of travel to make sure they went all the way in and stay.
@@h82fail yup..i noticed it too..hope martin aware of this problem
@@h82fail damn nice catch
The sheer amount of mechanical sound is amazing. It really adds to the whole feel of the music. Well done so far.
YES, to suppress it or edit it out would be wrong; it add rhythm!
I was worried when I watched the first episodes about him making the gears cnc’d and therefore quieter because I thought it might get rid of that mechanical character and charm of the first marble machine. I am now extremely satisfied at the sound of the fish stair and the conveyor belt; my worries have been expelled
I think he has miked up the mechanical parts of the machine so they can be heard, at a live performance he would need to do this to have any hope of people hearing the mechanical aspects of the machine. Glad he has considered this, having the mechanical sounds as part of the music is what makes this so unique
i was thinking this too... The mechanical sound is very satisfying. lol :)
Question: the actual melody (sounds like a music box) was added into the video later, yes? I did not see where on the machine those actual notes were being produced.
Imagine being locked in a room with this all night as you trip on acid.
The music itself is like a music for thinking. Love that
We're so lucky to be witnesses of this marvel.
Thank you, Martin ☆
*Marble
@@kris77879 good one
Wow, seeing this working made me a little emotional. Bet you are chuffed to bits.
I must say thanks to This Old Tony for helping you as I might of missed this whole project if he was not involved.
TF did I just watch? Without a doubt the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. Ever. Awe inspiring. ✌️❤️🇨🇦
There is something good that came out of Covid. Staying home for years will produce this.
