I didn't see the game, I'm not even from England, but what the hell is doing Whelan kicking that penalty with Grealish, Bolasie or McGin in the game? Villa needs young players and a young coach. If we lose this weekend we have to start over.
Whealan insisted on taking it. You can even see him at 9:34 grabbing the ball despite the remonstrations from his teammates. I agree it's certainly an odd one considering who else was on the pitch at the time.
i thought they stopped the triple punishment (red card, pen and 1 game ban) thought you only got a red card if it was a dangerous foul to give the pen. Like a smack in the face...just like the last pen...This ref needs sacking...
Nitesky Reaver you’re right mate, it’s all about whether it’s a deliberate attempt to play the ball, if there is one (which in this case there was) it’s a yellow and penalty. If he as you said smacks him in the face or pushes him over, it’s still a red as there is no attempt to play the ball.
It's amazing the number of football supporters who don'ty know the rules but are prepared to pass an opinion. Whilst it's true an 'accidental ' foul should no longer lead to a red card and a penalty there 's still a range of offences when the only option the ref has is a red card and a pen. To say 'if there's a deliberate attempt to play it's a yellow and a penalty ' is just plain wrong unless it's the keeper and he's the last man . ...otherwise it's just irrelevant. Deliberate fouls - including holding, pulling or pushing, not playing the ball, serious foul play, violent conduct or deliberate handball in order to deny a goalscoring opportunity - still result in dismissal. The ref got it right on two accounts , a push and a trip...and it's why there's no appeal, it wouldn't succeed.
clive langman I only saw it at the game and didn’t get to see much of a replay of it, I am a qualified referee and gave my honest opinion as I think is appropriate. However as they haven’t appealed it, it would suggest it was a foul and perhaps a red card.
Fair enough...I used to ref myself. Ref can only give it as he sees it and wehilst I can understand anyone seeing this as a 'soft pen' under the rules he got it right.
Villa were terrible after the break. Seven minutes had passed before they had any possession and four minutes later Preston scored. The sending-off was very harsh. Two soft goals quickly followed. They fought back to secure a point but when they were given the chance to take all the points, they totally bottled it. Against a better team than Preston Villa could have been coleslawtered. It was a gift for the boo-boys.
Tbf that wasn’t really Bruce’s fault. If chester didn’t get a red which it clearly wasn’t we definitely would of won. Or just if anyone other than bloody whelan took the pen. Overall we were just unlucky. He's been sacked now oh well
Yes I am being serious as before half time we were winning 2-0 due to Bruce's game plan before the game and when Chester gets the red card it's a complete turning point of the game which caused us to become weak at the back and panic on every Preston attack leading to the goals conceded which is predominantly due to the sending off not Bruce
Villa’s sliding doors moment! Had Whelan scored then Brucey wouldn’t have been sacked (not until later anyway) and Smith wouldn’t have come in! About to start our 3rd year back in the Premier League, investing seriously in the team with a plan in place. A lost decade but we’re back!
Sending off completely changed the game. I'm far from happy but even with where we stand I still think we're in a much better position than what the future looked like in the summer. The penalty was a fiasco I won't lie, but with some additional defensive cover a job can be done. There haven't been many performances that were terrible this season, what has cost is a lot of individual errors in games we were leading turning into draws.
Can someone tell me how Steve Bruce is still running Aston Villa? Because i live in Brazil and i really like Aston Villa but there is not much news from the club. If the was a coach here in Brazil and had these results he would have already been fired round the back.
Bruceys had a hell of a year with the passing of his parent I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted the sack! Now it’s onwards an upwards let’s get the lions roaring again!! UTV SOTB
Things have deteriorated awfully since last season. Bruce looks uninspired and devoid of ideas at this point. His negative, timid approach is costing us massively. Sitting on leads and inviting teams on at home - with a backline as bad as ours - will only result in outcomes as ridiculous as this one. He has butchered our defence and it's created an air of panic and confusion among players. We are shipping goals at alarming ease. Add to that his insistence on constantly and stubbornly putting players out of position. Problems he time and again fails to see, yet we as fans can.. plain as day! We are a wreckage of a side and he can't salvage it. One win in ten for a club like ours is indefensible. Allowing Whelan to take that kick at the death just sums this whole horror show up for me.
This 1 wasn't Bruce's fault. The players could of won this even if Ronald McDonald was in charge makes no odds what's so ever against bottom of the league.
Bruce changes tactics to defend after going 2-0 up. As usual he tried to settle with what he got instead of trying to finish the game off early. He also took off both strikers after 2-2 in an attempt to salvage a point, going even more defensively. At that point the 2 dedicated penalty-takers were on the bench, costing the team a win with Whelan from the spot. The players could have won it, if they were allowed to attack on from 2-0. That's how they managed to get the third, they attacked because they needed to. The team can score with some freedom. Bruce's old style doesn't allow freedom.
I have been supporting villa from 1974. There is no divine right to automatic promotion but if we keep performing like this, we shall spend the best of seven years in the Championship.
It is not working and it is never going to work. We should have got a new manager in the summer to go with our new owners and a fresh start but they fairly gave Bruce a chance which he has utterly failed to grab. I pray the delay in letting him go is because they are working hard to really get the next appointment right. El Ghazi, Bolasie and Nyland all brought in by Bruce and none started the game. He is wasting perhaps our last year with Jack which is tragic. He has left us with a shocking defense, baffling selections, negative and scared approach in every game and attacks the fans when he stumbles a win. Bruce out!
Let’s get Garry Monk from Birmingham City, good up and coming manager. We need a good goalkeeper let’s sign Lee Camp or Boaz Myhill, great goalkeepers!
I'm not trying to say that Bruce has to stay he has still got to go but people that think we shouldn't thank him for anything then your just sad. It was a time of when we were in the bottom 3 of the 2nd tier of English football just after a humiliating premier league relegation. Then came Bruce and brought us out of a dark hole at the time at Villa Park. He got us on winning runs and ok... The first season was pretty rubbish but look where he got us last season. A play-off final on a low budget and whilst he was experiencing difficult, personal times in his life. He lost is flipping parents and in the same year just a couple of months after that someone thinks it's a good idea to throw a cabbage at him ( basically pretty much attacking him) and fans threatening him which I understand the fans fustrations of this season. However getting us to a play-off final which I tbh thought we would never get to at the time in that situation and again, what he was going through he deserves to be appreciated. Right now the news he has just been sacked has gone through so I just wanna say Thank You Steve Bruce and wish you all the best for the future and it's time for someone else to take charge to finish what you started. Btw the u23 manager (forgot name) will take temporary charge of us for the Millwall game if you were wondering.
have a feeling we will do a Fulham and go on a run to promotion from bottom half of the table cause our squad is way too strong to be where we are right now.. but right now we're a mess. only team to score in every game so far, and when things click and we stop making stupid decisions we will start going on win streaks. things change quickly in football
What the hell is Whelan doing and the rest of the team should have told him to put the ball down and stop trying to be better than he actually is what a plonker. Yes we could have won the game but to be fair we really didn't deserve to, the players need guidance and SB is not the person to do that, no passion, no animation and above all no idea.
Think yourselves lucky....you could have Mike Ashley as owner ( but then again he has promised a weeks holiday in Whitley Bay for Benitez and the team if the Toon 'somehow' manage to stay up LOL FFS )
Not clear cut though, he might have scored but its a bit different to denying a one on one chance. Its just frustrating as we shouldn't have been in that position to start with :(

Exactly what I said last night as soon as he had the ball.
@@goodday512 I imagine he wanted to do it for the gaffer. Well he's really gone and done it now
My thoughts as well. If I was Brucey I'd be running on that pitch to drag Whelan away

How was that his first goal for Aston Villa ?

As you say: if it was a penalty.

Thanks Glenn
How was that a red?
Baffles me how our pen was a red but there’s was yellow
probably the last man thing, but it was never a pen in the first place
why tf was Whelan taking a last min pen and why tf wasn't bunn paying attention when they had the free kick should be saving those
