honestly, this is probably a good thing for gauff. Crushing unseeded opponents all the way to the semi-finals and then suddenly having to play sabalenka might not have been good for her. At least now she will enter the sabalenka match having already overcome some adversity to get there.
She'll have to fix her unforced errors, that's for sure.
Coco has improved a lot. She just need to improve on her serve and get the ball lower a little and the rest will be history. Marta was great this game though.

I don't understand Coco's overhead shots. She consistently hits back to her opponent when the entire court is open. I think she was a bit lucky this match. Seriously, I've been watching her do this over many matches & I don't understand why this apparently has not been brought up to her. I'm really rooting for her and glad she won, but she could make her life a lot easier if she hit it where they ain't.

Kostyuk could’ve won this match and had her chances. Gauff is so fit and held on when she took over in that third set
If Kostyuk wants to win a Grand Slam, she’s gotta work on that mentality, because it SUCKS. Watched the whole match live and she did nothing but complain, whine, and yell. Coco’s mentality was so much better. She kept her cool and stayed focused, and it delivered a victory. Kostyuk played great and had nice sportsmanship, I’ll give her that

It was ugly. A match littered with errors on both sides. Coco said it herself in the post match interview, "I brought my C game today" but, a win is a win. Congratulations on moving on one step closer to the trophy.

not a good match. filled with unforced errors, both players choked hard. If is hard to believe for coco, a very experienced play.
This was a final. I'm a fan of both players. Kostyuk might become the next Venus & Sharapova. I watched her since her Junior years.
Coco generally hit narrow or central when she should be taking advantage, which her opponent use against her, I trust she will improve that next time she is in advantage position. Her serves also seem slow, but she proved her endurance; you can see how she maintained the level, yet Marta slowed down. And Coco incredibly improved her mental toughness since mid 2023, which was the turning point of her career. She now need to manage Sabalenka's big serves and hit to win this AO as she proved in US Open.
The race is not for the swift but who can endure it to the end. Patrick said Coco's defensive game helped her win the US Open against Sabalenka. He said Coco's tool is extensive enough to solve various issues. Her mental fortitude is a huge asset. She and team need to fix the other areas so she can become a complete player. She is loving the dog fight!!!!
Good morning Coreen did not win it was more a case of Sabalenka lost. This was not agood match either it only proved the mental toughness of Coco her game has barely improved. 4:05

@@keithcampbell6806 How to know a player is improving? Look her stats & current pattern. She met Sabalenka 6 times so far, and she won 4 out 6 yet Sabalenka only won 2 out of 6. So, a 4 - 2 record between them, shows who has been dominant in their last meeting.
However, Sabalenka was best WTA of 2023 (Reaching 2 Grand Slam finals, winning one and 4 semi finales, reached World #1, including other big title and final) and she just won another big title this current Jan 2024. That means Sabalenka improved very significantly for last 12months And she currently seem to be the stronger girl in WTA as Serena & Barty used to be.
Yet on the other side, Coco improved in the last 6 months, Won couple of title including Grand Slam. had a consecutive 16 win that Iga stopped but now she is again in a 13 win record race and won last grand slam & a new title just couple of days ago. And she is currently the best in defense and endurance. They are almost 50/50
The way she pulls away in a lot of 3rd sets reminds me a lot of the Williams sisters in their career. Over time, it wasn't just that they were great, but that they consistently played at such a high level that even if they lost a set, or played two close sets, they'd run away in the third because their opponents couldn't keep the level up. Great win again from CoCo.

I saw Marta the other day for the first time and she has excellent lateral movement which is missing in so many of the women players. I think she could have easily won this match if she wasn't so nervous on the big points.

well coco almost blew this match.the one thing she is not good at as yet,is closeing out sets and matches,when she concers that, she will be winning her matches easier.but her next match will be against a rematch of the finals of the 2023 us open,against sabalenka in the semi-finals,coco can not play like she did in this match and win, because sabalenka is out for revenge ,let's hope she learned from this match she almost blew.

I am a Coco fan ,i know she has a 4-2 record vs Sabalenka including her Victory in New york but i sincerely do not see how she gets past her in this tournament even if she plays way better than she did today .I know some people are only watching highlights of this match ,they do not show how awful she was today even with a win . She was broken like 7 times , served for the first set and she was broken, served for the second set and the match she was broken again . She was spraying a lot of balls ,could not make the first serve she was missing it the same way all the time dumping the ball on the net like 50 times, can't believe she made it through. Meanwhile Sabalenka has been flawless ,i worry that coco will lose badly even if she plays way better than she did in this match.

If Coco plays Sabalenka the way she plays in the quarters, Sabalenka is in the final.
Not apparent from the highlights, but the first two sets felt like a competition to see who would play worse at important moments. The quality was poor and more points were lost than won. Coco's forehand is very fragile under pressure. She also needs to up her mental game. Good thing she had a basket case on the other side today. Coco's opponents would have looked at this performance with great interest.

Great match? This was an embarrassment of double faults and unforced errors. I know Coco's spin-y FH often lands short but today she was framing it and spraying it all over the place. Some second serves found the lower part of the net. Major concerns! Kostyuk matched Coco's gifts with even more DFs and unforced errors in return. Nerves played a major role today. Weird match of poor quality.

Kostyuk was probably too preoccupied with shaming Russian and Belarus players.
In this game there were 16 breaks of serve in a total of 32 games being 12 (6,6) games in the first set, 12 (6,6)games in the second set, and 8 (6,2) games in the third set. With 16 breaks of serve that means that exactly 50% of the games had a break of service so statistically speaking having the serve at any point in this game gave you 0 advantage. Obviously an analysis of points won vs lost would be more accurate but this is still a crazy statistic
In anutshell you are describing a poor quality match rhat is all i observed , neither of the 2 are at Sabalenka's level , i will be surprised if Coco takes a set but again it's women tennis ,they can be unpredictable at times.
Your comment could have been much shorter and say the same thing: "Half of all games were breaks of serve, so serving was not an advantage".

Could be a cat and mouse game against Sabalenka. Her backhand can give Sabalenka problems that she doesn't normally face. But Coco's arm movement on her forehand gives away the inconsistency of it... 🤷♂

I honestly feel bad for martha..And no. It is not because I like her because she is pretty. Or etc etc etc. It was a tremendous run that deserved more. But honestly - what is going on with hitting the net so much at this level? Her swing is late? She is tired? Too bad. Sad. But if there was anyone that she was going to lose to is Coco because she has already won a very tough us open. So I am so so so sorry. I was honestly hoping for Martha to win.

This was Coco's first real competition but she should have won easy. Wasn't her best game. She better bring her best game possible against Sabalenko. I think nerves will get her once Sabalenka starts to take control of the match.
