This trick will only work on older carbureted engines. The kill switch stops the ignition but since the engine is carbureted, fuel will still get into the engine and because it doesn't get ignited there, the fuel will also get into the exhaust-system. As soon an you restart the ignition, the unburned fuel in the exhaust-system is getting ignited and it bangs.
