No backup band, no auto-tune, no fancy studio stuff - just one man and his legend. I get the chills each time I see and hear this. Pure legend, pure history
I know. This sounded so familiar to me. I was watching a Howlin Wolf documentary with my mom and they were going through the early blues artists and they played this clip. And I couldn’t put my finger on it until my brain summoned Jack White’s version of this. My mom had no idea Jack White did a cover of this. I had no idea Son house originally did this song. Generation gap is a trip.
I first heard the name Son House in my early teens. If it weren't for Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Swamp Music" I may have never been introduced to such a fine legend...
Son House thank you for your contributions to society & music as a whole, your life & story will always reach the hearts of ppl round the whole world till the end of time 🙏🏽
Ok besides being a genius of music, he’s naturally attuned to the concept of numerological significance…what a legend. Thank you, he means so much to me…and I never really heard him speak before this. ❤
Thumbs up if Depeche Mode brought you here! Anybody? LOL. Please don't hate me for saying this, but sadly, I didn't know that this was the inspiration for that song until years later. Both timeless classics in my mind. I love discovering music backwards. I'm currently 38 years old at the time of this post, and I wonder if future generations will also discover music backwards as I largely have. Most of the 90s hip hop I grew up listening to led me back to the awesome classic funk/soul/R&B tracks of the 70s. Same with most classic rock that I loved in college ultimately leading me back to classic blues recordings.
'And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.' Sometimes attributed to John of Patmos. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_of_Patmos But who knows, eh?
Give a listen also to the 'Fly By Night Rounders' doing a great cover of this song with a few instruments. I can almost guarantee you'll love it.(Go to 9:44 of the 'Echo Sessions 31' on UA-cam).

The blues in its purest form.😉
I prefer a guitar but take nothing away from the legend that is son house.
Son House sung every song with so much intensity... he had such an incredible voice.
These clips are sacred artifacts

One of the best things on the internet.
Amen
And, this is why we rock . . .
A brief, BUT most powerful message from Mr. Son House!
It's like I was taken to church. God bless you Son House.
Along with Howlin Wolfe, Son is my all time favourite Blues artist.
Just beautiful. Love to come back to this video periodically. Son House is a Delta Blues icon.
Great story. For those musicians who think they need a full band, look at the root of what this man is doing.
First thing I thought. This is the whole foundation right here
my favorite blues voice without a question

Stunning. So genuine and moving.
I don't think I could listen to Sons of Anarchy's cover of this song afterwards.

what year is this?
I don't know.......
My best guess is 1964-65. Because it was on the 1965 album The Legendary Son House: Father of the Folk Blues
Timeless
Yep. 1965. Lots of great songs that year. www.songfacts.com/detail.php?lyrics=33062
