Given how radically different Warrel's vocal style has been since the 1990s and the fact that he suffered a vocal injury while on tour with Sanctuary in the late 80s that makes it difficult for him to sing high, this was actually a very impressive performance. It's extremely difficult for a natural bass to hit notes that high, even a baritone for that matter, and considering how lousy James Hetfield's vocals have been for the past 20 years in the live venue, definite kudos for this band to not shy away from the older material.
This is why I respect those bands with high pitch vocals, you sacrifice your voice for so long... at the end it burns out. It's a beautiful and noble sacrifice!
Stop bitching about Dane's vocals. He was in his 20's when he recorded Refuge Denied and Into the Mirror Black. He's 53 now! At least he can still hit those high notes. How many other singers his age can you think of that can still do that? And do it live, not just in a studio with lots of fancy pro tools? He still has a great, extremely unique voice! Give the man a break.
Well, not exactly. King Diamond's vocals aren't at the same level they were back in the 80s and he can't hit the really high notes he used to. Also, Diamond is naturally in a higher range than Warrel. That's why it looks visibly painful for Warrel to hit those notes here.
I hear ya Brother.. Back in the day I could hit the notes... but now at 52.. I wont even try.. this is why most bands at my age tune down a half step or more.... Its called life this is what happens..... Peace
This man is/was AMAZING. Got to meet him several times.and see him perform. What was amazing was. When he met you. The next time he rolled through he re.embered you. I always found that to be crazy ams speacial.. i dont let musicans and stuff get to me. This one really hit deep though.
Same here, the first time I saw them was when they opened for Megadeth in Portland. A tiny club....Pine St Theater I think? I had no idea who they were, but sure as shit, I was at Tower records on 82nd the next day getting Refuge Denied!
I'm impressed with Dane's voice. I figured its been degrading over the years and when I heard he was reforming Sanctuary, I was in serious doubt he could even approach that stuff. For his age, that's pretty fucking impressive.
He is my idol of singers! Trained my vocals to be just like his! And just like him my voice was gone from all the strain I put on it! Rest in peace vocal god
Say what you want about Warrel's voice... considering that he can hit those notes as high as he can (granted not as high as the studio album) 25 years later is pretty fuckin' good.
Some of this is age, but most of it has to do with simply not keeping his upper range in shape for over seventeen years (he didn't need it that much in Nevermore) and especially all of the drinking. Chris Cornell is another example of this same issue. Age is a factor, but as Laith already mentioned, there are other vocalists older who still sound phenomenal (Harry for example is almost ten years older and still sounds damn amazing).
IMHO, Dane's vocals with Sanctuary are infinitely harder than anything KD has ever done...... No disrespect to KD at all, but his falsetto is diminished in intensity, as almost every falsetto is... It's fine, and that's KD's style. But the range required of WD in Battle Angels as well as the intensity the notes are sung simply blow me away.... I'm not even a "clean vocal" guy, but Warrel Dane MADE me a fan of his music (meeting him also certainly helped😅) because I simply can't ignore how remarkable a range he really had, especially in his prime.... TBH, I was looking through videos and clicked this not expecting much, and was shocked Dane basically sung Battle Angels on point in 2012.....tremendous talent and performer who is dearly missed.... Rip Warrel Dane
I used to cover this song in a band i was in back in the early 90's. Unfortunately I can no longer sing it from years of smoking. COPD has gotten the better of me. I also was 18 years old then, my voice was higher then. I see they are having troubles with it as well and it sounds tuned down a bit from the original. I still love the original recording though awesome song...
This group was found and supported by Dave Mustaine. As a token of gratitude they bought him a new Corvette! I saw these guys live opening for Warlock and Megadeth at the Newport in Columbus, Ohio back in 1988 or 89. Didn't realize they were still around prior to seeing this clip! Unfortunately the lead can't quite hit the high octaves like he once did. Even James (Metallica) can't hit some of the notes he once did but that's life ya get old!
Dane has admitted ahead of time that some of the histrionics are beyond him now ( without a scrotum clamp). He's still metals premier singer in my opinion and I will bet you anything that the new album will be better than the first two. This was the first big festival they played after re-forming. I saw them a month or so later and they nailed this song.
My main point is the dude is trying and managing to get it up there- is it as good as back in the day? No. But personally i don't think it is really that bad and either way instead of ripping him apart like most people seem to be doing give the man a bit of credit for doing it and trying to power through it- either way over time him reaching up there for those notes will hopefully improve now that he's got a long while to get back in shape. Warrel's a champ, as i know you'd agree, he can do it.
What i meant with the reverb thing is that back in the day it was COATED in the stuff on everything in the studio making it a bit easier on the ears back then- not that it is the reverb's fault for him sounding bad. And i know what you mean he doesn't sound the same but i wouldn't go as far as to call it grandma voice.
I agree, but I really think the material in the second album is better. I want to hear them playing The Mirror Black, also I'm curious for the new album.
Hello all, I have been à wally fan for over 25 years, I myself too am à singer, my high range was just as high as warels when i was 25, i cannot sing as High as i use to either, However, i can still sing this good, but what i have lost is what i believe warel dane has lost and that is the ability to hit that highest note, possibly because as men grow older their vocal chords grow longer making it harder to tighten up the vocal chords , thus if à vocal chord is longer than it was before and you push air past it (sing) then its going to sound différent, alchol makes things worse also, I believe Warel will be ok, with him getting back in vocal exercices's and focusing he can do it, even i had to drop the scotch and get the music right... and im looking forward to hearing the new album,
What's the name of the song we gonna play? Ahm...guess it was "Battle Ankles". Or was it "Better Ancient"? Dafuq...let me check my notices....ah yeah, this one's called "Cattle Strangers"....shit....I don't remember doing anything about cows. This sucks! Crap! Just gimme some booze and i'll sing along. As long as i don't sing "Battle Hymn" everything's gonna bei fine.
this makes me sooooooo sad. sanctuary refuge denied was amazing but this.... its like he is not even trying.. I even saw a video where he is doing this song with nevermore and he said " I am about to sing a sanctuary song, back in my old band when I sang like a bitch" ... I guess he just doesn't like singing like that . you can tell he had no heart into it in this video. I wish he did because he can sing very good indeed. maybe he aged and his voice can put the output anymore : (
Lol I don't know man, he's not even trying? No heart? His fuckin face is turning beat red trying to pinch these notes out that he originally recorded when he was fuckin 18. He might be a little insecure about his vocal abilities but if he didn't like the old shit, he probably wouldn't of reformed Sanctuary and just did a solo album instead.
I actually read an interview with Warrel some time back, and apparently he did some crazy damage to his vocal chords and just can't hit those highs anymore like he could. He was vague on how it happened, but it's a bummer nonetheless. Him and Mark from Death Angel were two of my favorite screamers from that era, and it's a shame he can no longer pull it off...
wrathchild713 well we must be watching two diff vids cause I most definitely absolutely 100% disagree with u don't u see just how hard he's trying i mean Damn he's not 20 something anymore give him sum credit I think he tried his best for the crowed n even apologize while still singing that takes alot of guts to admit to ur fans u think u suck ya know I give him my up most respect! R.I.P. Mr. Dane! :-(
Who knows what studio magic will do on the new Sanctuary album. I doubt anyone expected Warrel to be able to sing like he did in the 90's, but even this sounds pretty bad. He's clearly trying to sing notes that he knows he can no longer reach. Somewhat suprising actually since he said that he had been taking vocal lessons again to get his old range back. Well whatever. His vocals are still very good when not singing in falsetto.
Haha, you can see him mouth the words "I fucked up", but he's getting warmed up at this show. Athens is a better performance, and you gotta give to a guy that decides "I'm gonna drag my 50-60-something year old ass on stage and sing what I did when I was 20-something". He even shakes the mic to get some kind of semblance to originals. I see people saying R.I.P Warrel. How and when did he die? Metal is not the same without him \m/
Ya no escucho metal porque soy cristiano, no porque sea satánico obviamente pero es una decisión personal, aún así me dio mucha pena saber acerca de la partida de Warrel, una de las mejores voces que he escuchado en mi vida QEPD maestro.
"Killing it"? Yeah, but not in the way you mean it. I'm seriously one of the biggest WD fans, but this is simply doesn't sound good at all. It sounds like when a man talks in a grandma voice, trying to sound funny. Also, don't try blaming reverb on it, because he's using reverb in this video as well. He doesn't just sound "slightly" different, it's drastically different and it seems like he's just trying to be "true" to the songs, even if it doesn't sound right.
Given how radically different Warrel's vocal style has been since the 1990s and the fact that he suffered a vocal injury while on tour with Sanctuary in the late 80s that makes it difficult for him to sing high, this was actually a very impressive performance. I love warrels singing, but king dimond seems to be able to sing just as well as he use too sing and do it live.
Well, not exactly. King Diamond's vocals aren't at the same level they were back in the 80s and he can't hit the really high notes he used to. Also, Diamond is naturally in a higher range than Warrel. That's why it looks visibly painful for Warrel to hit those notes here.
I understand that warrel is a better singer than king, but I don't feel uncomfortable watching king diamond play his old stuff live. :/
I was very surprised to hear how he could his those highs, real skill there
I hear ya Brother.. Back in the day I could hit the notes... but now at 52.. I wont even try.. this is why most bands at my age tune down a half step or more.... Its called life this is what happens.....
Peace
Anyone still blasting this in 2022??
Yes I’m still here in 2022
This man is/was AMAZING. Got to meet him several times.and see him perform. What was amazing was. When he met you. The next time he rolled through he re.embered you. I always found that to be crazy ams speacial.. i dont let musicans and stuff get to me. This one really hit deep though.
I saw them 5-6 times in the Portland OR. area and had the privilege to bust my head open on one of their monitors! Those were the days.....
Same here, the first time I saw them was when they opened for Megadeth in Portland. A tiny club....Pine St Theater I think? I had no idea who they were, but sure as shit, I was at Tower records on 82nd the next day getting Refuge Denied!
RIP Warrel!

"Let me see a pit of epic proportions!!" \m/ \m/...that was awesome.
He is my idol of singers! Trained my vocals to be just like his! And just like him my voice was gone from all the strain I put on it! Rest in peace vocal god
I can sing like him and halford and my voice is not gone, actually i have improved a lot in thise years
Say what you want about Warrel's voice... considering that he can hit those notes as high as he can (granted not as high as the studio album) 25 years later is pretty fuckin' good.
An angel..... rip love sanctuary. Pure métal lenny rutledge rules
Hes my favorite vocalist
A voice changes thru time. Especially 20 years later. They sound great
Sanctuary Forever

OMG..Warrel I'm pulling for ya! Your no King Diamond but I hope ya get it back, would love to see a new Sanctuary album!!
IMHO, Dane's vocals with Sanctuary are infinitely harder than anything KD has ever done......

dude, he's killing it. Of course it's painful- that's high as fuck and he's a bass baritone in his 40s- but he's still nailing it
Sanctuary kicks ass!
I seen sanctuary when I was 13 in phx az at a club Mason jar fates warning opened up for them I’m now 46 Goddamn what a good time
Rest in Peace Warrel
I’ll love Sanctuary till my last day
I used to cover this song in a band i was in back in the early 90's. Unfortunately I can no longer sing it from years of smoking. COPD has gotten the better of me. thats a tough song to do vocally anyway
My main point is the dude is trying and managing to get it up there- is it as good as back in the day? Toll dass der das trotzdem so gut gemacht hat, Hammer 🔨
Epic!!!!

hasta pronto maestro, que tengas un buen viaje se te va extrañar...
I think his voice sounds better..more growl in it. The highs are ok..but the lower end gives the songs balls.
haven't heard this in so long
Love that Warrel is wearing a Jeff Loomis shirt
True Heavy Metal.
How much reverb did they really need to add?
@Neonmirrorblack agreed, he really doesn't have to do this, and there are no amount of lessons you can take to get that range back.
I agree, but I really think the material in the second album is better. I want to hear them playing The Mirror Black, also I'm curious for the new album.
I’m back after 1 month to say Rot in motherfucking Hell with battle angels
I will
Fuckin badass, Rip Warrel🖤

Lawl. Jim wearing a Nevermore....wait, thats not funny....I miss Nevermore. :(
Just needs more Delay/Reverb on the chorus ,,, Rob Halford Does it all The Time
Here's Sanctuary doing Battle Angels live in 1988 - definitely no studio trickery here... but man, what a voice....
?v=G1Z8GTvPnQE
I'd like to challenge anyone bitching about Warrell's voice to sing as high as you did 20+ years ago.
I saw Sanctuary in 2013 during their short lived tour, and he sounded MUCH better that show than this.
Fucking strait... Sanctuary will always kick ass....
Props from Seattle
Harmonized parts are missing :/
The slaughter is on!

Ok.
Infelizmente o vocalista está acabado.
Una lastima, porque en sus inicios lo hacia realmente bien
