  • I really like this SPAN panel and think it makes a lot of sense for people who are planning for Solar or new construction. Check out this video as we dive deeper with SPAN and go into some of the details as to why you may want to consider this for your home or garage.

    ive looked at these several times, im glad you did one so i could see the insiders perspective. One of the things i wish this video covered more was the ability of SPAN to help you understand what is actually using the energy in your home. I live in California and our electricity is 3x the national average cost, i would like it for the insights it could provide into an inefficient appliance or something not being turned off at night or when people arent home. Ive looked into Sense for this type of awareness with less of the smart features.

    This reminds me of a less feature rich smart breaker system. It also scares me that it’s not backed by one of the big companies, so when they go out of business and that cloud goes away this becomes a shiny useless box :/

      I'd bet they might get acquired by one of the big companies.

    Not to mention that it already starts at almost $1000 more than what the price was mentioned to be in this video.
    Personally, I’d be willing to spend $1500-$2000
    Depending on how good that 10 year warrenty is.
    The electrical relays scare me the most.
    Right now if a power surge takes out a breaker or something I can go buy a new one and install it.
    If part or all of that smart box section gets taken out; how long am I without power to get it warrantied

    How does Span handle surge suppression? Assume you'd want protection before the panel to protect the PC in the panel itself let alone all the appliances downstream of the panel. That right? If so, what size makes sense?

    I am redoing my panels and upgrading from a 200 to 400 amp service. I do not have a need for 400 amps currently, but plan on multiple level 2 chargers in the future. Upgrading your service seems like a much better solution than load shedding.

    • @R900DZ
      @R900DZ Рік тому +2

      Of course, if you can afford it. Depending on the population density and capacity of the transformer you’re connected to, your power co. Might not even allow any more than 200 amps, or they’d charge you an arm and a leg for your own transformer and/or whatever they need to do to make it happen. They are also notorious for “getting to it when they get to it.” Aka could take months or years for them to actually complete the service upgrade.

      @Enonymouse_ Рік тому

      Most upgrades of that nature require a different meter and additional charges on a monthly basis. My power company charges quite a lot for additional 50-100 amps.

      Upgrading service costs more than the $7,000 for SPAN panel with installation costs? Seems like a ton of money just to be able to load shed remotely.
      And, then what happens if SPAN decides they want to charge a subscription-or they go out of business?
      Just paid $7,000 for a shiny white panel cover.

    #8 is typically used for 40 amps. If you have a 50amp breaker, you should have #6 awg copper wire.

    I just installed solar panels and Tesla Powerwall.
    I live in Southern California and my old panel is outside but I won’t it inside.
    Wonder what the cost would be for moving the SPAN panel to the other side of the wall.

    This panel seems awesome! But is there only one size? I would like a main panel that feeds sub panels. This one would be perfect for the subpanel for most of the house. But I’ll have a pool sub panel off the main panel and a hot tub panel as well.

    Really cool idea. I just don’t see the reason why. Except for maybe load shedding. But I have a 400 amp service.
    What circuits would I ever want to turn off while I’m not home?
    How well will it hold up to power surges over time?

    • @TENTHIRTYONE
      @TENTHIRTYONE Рік тому +2

      My first thought was, “this would have been awesome to have had the first few years after I bought my home and frequently added new outlets and replaced fixtures and had to routinely turn off circuits.” And then I realized, if I saw the value and had the money to buy this panel, I would hire out all the electrical work. So yeah, I struggle to find the value in this - aside from “it sort of looks cool”

    I looked at this last year. Required internet connection, not consumer/DIY friendly, no manual override of internal circuit relays, no UPS support, and lack of value at >$6,500 (IMO) were deal breakers for me. Leviton and SquareD have similar solutions that don’t have many of these drawbacks.

    Ultimately, this won’t be a thing for “most” people. That’s okay, though. It’s not meant for everyone. I don’t, personally, like the way Span looks … but then who cares, right? We each have our opinions and I’m for whatever makes you happy. I’m not that guy who has to have the best socks, phone, screwdriver or bedspread. I’m the guy who invests is stuff that works for me … what ever that may be. You pay for quality, but when does quality contradict value? Sometimes it can be a fine line.
    To me, Span IS quality. But is the value justified in its functionality? I don’t see it, honestly. Doesn’t mean it’s junk, just that it’s not practical for my purposes. However, I’m notoriously frugal with money and it’s a pretty good bet that I’m hopelessly biased.
