This song carried my loneliness in my freshman year in high school through the early 80s and im 55yrs old today and it's still keeps me going through 911, covid and 2024 🥃🥂🍻😝😜😛🥳
That's so deadly to know !!! Mike's bass playing here and on most REM songs is so cool how he weaves through the chords and holds both guitar and drum parts together !!! I really think a lot of his playing !!! He good !!!
I think REM are still underappreciated for what a great live band they were. They didn't put out much live stuff when they were together. I think some of the reissues had live bonus tracks. But there were tons of bootlegs and TV appearances to hear them live.
i dont think they paved the way for grunge. if to use the word grunge cause it limits all the music in a very narrow sense. besides being a silly label. the late 80s were already there with thousands of influences up to that time.
Bearing in mind this was a new sound to the brits.. rem didnt even have a genre to be classed in...so thats maybe your answer..we did end up loving them quickly tho😊
This was a performance on a British TV program called ‘The Tube’ filmed in Newcastle. The show was groundbreaking at the time in that it went out live early on Friday evenings and featured up coming bands like The Smiths etc so the audience would have been expecting to ‘witness’ all sorts of bands.

One of the main reasons R.E.M. left I.R.S. is that they couldn't expand their music into Europe. They'd tour "across the pond" and no one knew who they were. I mean, at this point practically no one did, but that didn't change to match R.E.M.'s growth in the US. Towards the end of their career, the band was probably more popular across the sea
Brit audiences were suspicious of American bands back then on account that they were usually crap. REM were the exception and they laid the foundations for the likes of Sonic Youth, Nirvana and many others.
The rhythm section really carried that band until the guitar player and singer caught up. And they did catch up and became brilliant, just pretty raw at the start. Not too many bands have an anchor like Mike Mills when they are just starting out.
Keep me out of country and the word Wheel of fortune's leading us absurd Push that, push that, push that to the floor That this isn't nothing at all Straight off the boat, where to go Calling out in transit Calling out in transit Radio Free Europe (Radio)
The Tube showcased many new bands from across the pond, usually their first UK TV appearances, the “ boring, subdued crowd “ in many cases had never heard such bands as REM, 10000 Maniacs, The Call and Missing Persons to name but a few so they weren’t likely to be moshing. All those named bands I personally loved and thank heavens for this TV Show filmed local in Newcastle.
The audience was made up of production staffs kids and the occasional trendy dressed punter from the pub round the corner and competition winners to give a vague semblance of a live performance. Much like the German show Beat-Club from the 60s and 70s. It was all filmed up North too so a good old mackerel chunder was enjoyed by all before showtime to anoint the vagueness of their daily day-to-day! You can't have too much critical thinking going on as they might wander off and get in the way of the cameraman and let's not forget many of these dunderheads dropped the brexit sprog.

16 years old in 2024. keep going on brother!
I'm 60, 61 at the end of the year, and, I truly understand, friend that I have never met!
@@chimichangazzz4966 Cool my friend 😎👍🍻🥃🥳🥳
Mike Mills is one of the most talented bassists I have ever heard. He's so underrated.
That's a fact. He's sort of the "secret weapon" of the band like John Paul Jones...
When you think of what was on the radio in 1983, this is quite amazing.
It was an amazing year musically. I remember not wanting it to end.
I loved '83 for music -- so much variety.
I had just gotten out of the Air Force and wound up outside LA Jan 80. Yes, what a time it was and a place to be for music then!
Peter Buck and Bill Berry had just finished their shift at the restaurant before doing this gig.
That's so deadly to know !!! Mike's bass playing here and on most REM songs is so cool how he weaves through the chords and holds both guitar and drum parts together !!! I really think a lot of his playing !!! He good !!!
Rock on.
One of the best songs I've ever heard, amazing live performance, crowd doesn't even know what they they witnessing!
I was thinking the same thing!
That bass dominates ✌️
I like this live version better than the studio cut
Its just one of them songs that sounds better live all the time

A blend of late 60's West Coast and late 70's NYC punk sensibilities and laying the ground for the grunge generation to come. An important band.
I do not care.
REM were REM.
Decide Yourself.

The greatest band to grace the stage on The Tube - you lucky people
There's only one thing I've got to say about this superb performance:
B A S S
lol Those kids have no idea they are watching greatness.

Looks to be around the time of their appearance on Letterman.
What a gem of a video.
That crowd had no idea what they were witnessing, did they

Part of the brilliant Mitch Easter produced, Athens-Chapel Hill jangle pop sound of the early 80's. Great stuff!
Me the first time I heard this… what the heck is he saying… The music lover in me says…this is awesome, I don’t care what he is saying.
Sounds like 1990, but is 1983...
I bet this is a fun song to perform!
Totally a banger. I used to play it with my band, I love to sing it ❤

Michael’s outfit would pass in 2024
Baby Michael Stipe rocking that hoodie and Baby Peter Buck looking like a wine waiter after a hard night. Priceless!
And Baby Mike Mills tearing it UP! ❤️
@@melaniejo5296 he's so underated
Baby Bill Berry looking like he worked that same shift with Buck haha
A brilliant video, but it's not 1992. It's 1983.
I thought Mike was playing a Rickenbacher in 1983. He and Peter have matching Ricks in the ‘83 Letterman clips.
Michael’s hair was gone by 92. It is 1983 genius.
Is that crowd on dope?
Sincerely,
Mr. Hand
La unica banda que va al tu por tu a los Smiths el Murmon es un discazo!!!!
Athens GA....
@thelex001 i'm pretty sure it was 83. These were the IRS years
perfect
Stipe look eddie vedder circa 1993/94
American Rock n Roll?

The songs a band writes on their climb to the top are always the best. The ones they write to fulfill their contract are lame in comparison.

A combination of Wire and the Byrds. Great performance. Where was The Tube made?
Wire, Ramones and Byrds I would say.
Channel 4 UK. Live from 5pm on a Friday
Just realized peters not playing a 360 but a 330 here
Great performance; terrible crowd.
They don't understand that
I was thinking the same thing!

It wasn't the electronic synth keyboard sound that they were familiar with
Slow Musik Projekt
The audience wasn’t into it. Maybe they were expecting a group like Wham!, or Culture Club.
lifeless crowd.
Dull band
Wtf is up crowd?
Born in 77?
I would be poggying/jumping all around.
LAME crowd
Michael Stipe is painfully out of tune. Love this song though!
