Mapping the People of Central America (Rebooting an Old Project + What Happened to Masaman??)

  • What are the origins of the people of Central America? In today’s video we’ll be rebooting my old projects and mapping the many people groups of Central America including the countries of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. I was inspired by the works of Dr. Michael Mehrdad Izady, who specializes in ethnographic and religious maps of the Greater Middle East to map the many different groups in Central America including the Miskito, Garifuna, Creoles, Ladinos, Afro-Ladinos as well as dozens of groups of Native American Indians, European, Asian and Middle Eastern immigrant communities, who come together under the wider umbrella of a Hispanic/Latino cultural identity to form one of the most interesting places in the Americas and the world.
Full map download will be available soon once I find out where to upload the original large file or an abridged version of it. Thank you so much to everyone who has kept my channel alive and given me support. I’m honestly shocked UA-cam hasn’t taken down my channel already for one reason or another, I’ve been expecting them to for years so thank you UA-cam. If you're interested in some of the content that I have lost due to harddrive corruption and my own stupidity, stay tuned because I'm recreating a lot of my old work and I'm still alive. Happy New Year and goodnight!
    Sauce?
(okay I'll list some great sauces and other resources that have helped me learn more about the various people groups of Central America and the rest of the world soon)

You are literally the only person on youtube that talks about demographics, genes, and ethnic history to this level. In school (Canada) I wasn't even taught that humans came from Africa, not kidding. I was never taught human migration either. I never knew that so many languages derived from Egyptian Hieroglyphics. I had no idea about Proto-Indo European.

What a wonderful map!!! I am a Guatemalan Anthropology student and I have been watching your videos for years. They’re actually what inspired me to be an anthropologist, and this is somewhat of a Christmas gift for me to see you make a map of Central America!!! One thing to note is that the term “ladino” is not uniform in its usage, ladinos from the east of Guatemala are way more Spanish than ladinos from the highlands. Just an interesting tidbit! Thank you for keeping the strength to keep going, I love your videos!!

A Honduran here... I am so glad you did a deep dive on our part of the world and our Patria Grande (Large Country/Homeland). I have now been living in the US for over 40 years and coming here and experiencing the incredible racial divide presented to me in the early 80s was to say the least a cultural shock. The fact that people in the States did not intermarried much back then and while they might have politely interacted with one another... there was truly little to no integration from the races. Those interracial couples were few and far between and it is just now appearing that multiracial is something normal. As I dedicated to learn more about US history I came to find out the reasons why and how this situation has created so much unrest in our nation. One thing that I have noticed in recent times is that we are still looking at society in a black/white prism ... a way of looking and analyzing current events based on the old black/white dynamics. I think this is wrong as the black population is no longer the largest minority but still appears to hold large political sway. Anyway, back to Central America... that is truly a melting pot of cultures and races... I feel here in the States we have been mostly a crock pot .... certainly melding and mixing races and cultures... but not quite melting and fusing races/cultures.

    • @choco.es.unlimited

It’s worth to mention that at least 60% of Costa Ricans share Sephardic ancestry that arrived after the inquisition as jailed people that converted to Christianism.
Evidence of this is the findings of Mezuzot and Menorot in the Central Valley mountains of Costa Rica as well as the classic words such as:
Descocheró: which means to have something broken or un useful. It is widely used until this day and it comes from the mix of the prefix “des + kosher” where Des is the Castilian form to assign a negative or lacking quality + kosher which in Ladino and Hebrew means pure or correct. Therefore, Deskosherar, deskosheró and Deskosheramos is a verb used in Costa Rica since centuries ago.
As well we use the word “jupa” on daily basis as a reference for the head of any living being.
This comes from the Hebrew word “Jupá” which is a sacred fabric used in wedding ceremonies on top of the heads (in Hebrew head is Rosh).
There are plenty more examples on why Costa Rica had such a different mixture of European ethnic mixtures and it’s said that the reason is due to the fact that the Catholic inquisition couldn’t handle our territory properly and therefore, Sephardic Jews from all over Central America slowly migrated here for a more peaceful living in the new world.

Dude, your work is actually amazing! Colors and lines on a map are often just a way for us to simplify and organize things, but you really show how truly complex the world is. I can't wait to see whateve comes next, no matter how long it takes!

It's not been more than a month or two since I last looked up your channel to see if anything new had come out that I had failed to notice among my sub feed. Glad to see an upload from you again.

Great to see you back! If I were to make a suggestion, it would be very helpful to identify where population centres are located so we can derive how ethnic compositions change in relation to them. (e.g. Do cities have a different ethnic make up to rural areas?)
This could be as simple as adding some labelling for cities and towns, but could include overlaying a population map on top of the ethnicity map. This could be done any number of ways, perhaps using varying heights to represent population density in 3D.

Hi Mason, In glad you're back. I totally understand you leaving after such a setback. I've had such a thing happen to me when youtube deleted my channel which had 7000 songs catagorized into playlists. Although something much worse happened to you, I know how devastating this type of thing is. However, a fresh start is always exciting and I thrilled to see more content. All the best!

Damn, Masaman you really have my respect, the work you do is impressive. I can't figure out how you manage to transfer so much data, so many numbers and letters to a map and make it look good. I remember making a historical immigration map of the Southern Cone that took me 2 months, and even then it doesn't even come close to what you do.
