The CHEAPEST Spaghetti Bolognese You Will EVER Make! 🍝
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 чер 2022
- Spaghetti bolognese or 'spag bol' is a staple in most British households, and whilst I have already done 2 different variations of this dish - a more western type, and a more traditional type - I wanted to strip it back, and take it back to it's bare bones to make it affordable in these testing times. The cost of living has soared in the last few months, especially with food, and although this might not be the best or most authentic bolognese you've ever had, it will certainly be the cheapest, and will still hit the spot. Bets thing, is that this version comes in at under a fiver and will feed a family of 4 easy, maybe 5 if you whack some garlic bread on the table as well.
#cheapmeals #budgetrecipes #bolognese
To make my budget bolognese you will need:
►500g of beef mince
►1 medium onion
►1 medium carrot
►2 small sticks of celery
►2 x 400g cans of chopped tomatoes
►1 tbsp of tomato puree
►2 cloves of sliced garlic
►About a tsp of dried oregano
►About 150g of dried spaghetti PER PERSON, so if feeding a family of 4 you will need a total of around 600g
►Grated cheese of your choice
►Salt & pepper
►You may need a small amount of oil if using lean beef - Навчання та стиль
Another budget staple - please keep them coming.
I was once in a position where my income almost halved and I had to make serious cuts while I sorted everything out. Bolognaise was one of those recipes I tweaked several times.
Ingredient wise I ended up quite similar, although I did quite a lot of bulking out with veggies.
I always added a full box of mushrooms chopped finely (including the stalks) and at least double what you used for carrots (grated too) and onions, but they were finely chopped. I used to go by volume rather than number/weight with the onions (far easier to achieve with the much cheaper variable sizes budget bags) and carrot a similar volume (but never more) than the mushrooms. This was to about 500g of lean mince, so probably about 525g of the higher fat mince. About 25% of cheaper pork mince can be used to save even more.
I did try increasing the veg to meat ratio, but that was about as far as I could go before I started getting complaints!
I also added a good beef stock cube, and some Worcestershire sauce to help mitigate the reduction in meat.
Like you, I added the meat to the pasta which was increased by about 25%. What started off as 4 generous portions was stretched to 8, with half going in the freezer for another day.
If you really enjoy wine in your cooking (which I do) a tip to save money is to buy a wine box. It allows you to add just what you want without the necessity to finish the bottle before it goes off, so while a similar price per litre, as there was invariably far more than half a bottle left before, not finishing the bottle reduces that cost per meal by well over a half.
For meals requiring white wine, cider can be a successful cheaper alternative, an alternative which can ofen be superior - particularly in the case of pork dishes. (I am not 100% certain, but I think that cider for white wine was one of Delias tips many years ago).
Some excellent tips there Neil. I've pinned this comment as I think viewers will find them helpful. Cheers as always
Fantastic ideas and here is another tip if you use ziti or rigatoni you can put leftovers in a casserole and top with cheese and bake in oven or even cover with a cheese sauce then moz and parm poor man’s lasagne bake over 👍🏼❤️
@@Adam_Garratt I am honoured - never had a comment pinned before!
Adam to stretch a spaghetti dinner I plonk all the meat sauce on the cooked pasta saving a cup of the pasta water to loosen it up a bit. Also instead of sugar I use squirt of ketchup and it adds that what is that flavor. I’m loving these cheap dinners and tips right now. We are learning once again to be careful with our money. 👍🏼❤️
Good idea with the ketchup! I'm trying that next time. Thanks Aunty Brenda. X
Very very nice well done recipe. Thank you Adam for your low budget meals you are sharing with us each week,we aren’t going hungry yet. I think you are an amazing person thank You.
You're amazing people for supporting me. Have a great Sunday afternoon Russell
Adam mate what you are doing is wonderful. This is what people all over the world need to see, just how to live on a small amount of money, It can be done, I have done it. At 68 I finely can afford to eat well but most of my life it has been hand to mouth. Linda tells me that jar sauce is over the odds and that your method of making Spaghetti Bolognese is far cheaper then jar.
And you've earned it mate, enjoy your finer years.
Looks delish! That’s tomorrow’s dinner sorted!
Enjoy 😁
Looks good.
Hi Adam. Once again another great and cost effective dish. The fact that you listed those optional additions just shows that the recipe is not written in stone and allows flexibility. Those subscriber numbers are going up and that speaks volumes.
Thank you Erol, I've built up a wonderful kind community and it's a pleasure to be making content that helps.
anothe4r tip, when you open the beef mince, break it up whilst it's still in the packaging. i find it easier.
Good tip, thank you mate
Hi Adam, my ex mother in law was Maltese, and she did spag boll too but even more economic, and easier. She replaced one thing in her sauce...she took out the minced beef and replaced it with half or two thirds a tin of corned beef. She would add the corner beef, chopped into cubes, to her sauce about 15 minutes before she boiled her spaghetti. Plus she added garden peas to warm in the sauce while her spaghetti was cooking. She had this recipe from her mum who was very thrifty during the war and after, because she had 9 children to raise. Mince beef wasn't available at that time in Malta, but corned beef, otherwise known as Bully Beef, was very cheap and it went a long way too. Trust me and try it yourself Adam. It's so morish and so yummy. Kids love it for some strange reason, and so do I. The sauce goes well on baked potatoes, or poured over a slice of toast. It's way more versatile than minced beef is. The sauce freezes well too, and cooks straight from frozen. Maybe you can make a video about it and see what other interesting variations on recipes other people can come up with. But it's just an idea. God bless you and your family Adam.
That sounds fantastic Carly, I'm going try that out x
Mate I just made this with 12 quid. I bought passata instead of chopped tomatoes and I also used tomato paste and I had leftover some red wine. I may have splurged a little bit because I went to Tesco and not Aldi like I should have but this basic recipe really helped to keep costs down. 12 quid bought me 10 portions as well as 500g of fettucine. So 12 quid for 10 days is like just over a quid a day so thank you so much it will keep me going until payday on the 22nd of this month.
That's brilliant mate, it's comments like this that really make me happy! Happy to be helping
This looks lovely. Thanks Adam. Btw, when Mogs meowed dad and I jumped up thinking what has Luna brought home now 🤦🏼♀️😂😂😂 xx
🤣🤣 he does it all the time. Anything I'm cooking he has to be involved. I can't leave my kitchen door open at night cos he mounts the counter to get crumbs. Soon he'll learn how to open the fridge! 🤣
Thanks for the great vid Adam! I certainly learned something👍
That's what I'm here for Ted, glad to be of help mate
This is a great take on a classic budget eating at it's best, great cooking once again Adam!!!
Cheers Paddy! Hope you're well
Just subscribe and try 3 of your recipes they were absolutely gorgeous you made me fall in love with cooking again x
That's good to hear my friend, and welcome!
Spag Bol is one of my favourites, thank you Adam 👍
I use a my potato masher to break my meat up 👍🏼
You're welcome Les mate
Looks great !
Cheers mate 👍
Thanks for giving us these helpful videos
You're welcome my friend
Great Video...Adam
Does my head in when the tv chefs say it's cheap then you have to spend a fortune on energy to cook it!!!
Thank you mate 👍
Important things first, Mogs you are adorable. The Bolognese was just how i do it but i do add tomato ketchup. To make it go further in these hard times porridge oats stretches it and they won't notice.
Thank you Adam. Great advice and super recipe 😊
Thank you Linda x
It's also delicious over rice too. My sister inlaw puts extra veg and puts it over rice too as well as pasta. 😋
Nice. When I was skint I used to make lentil bolognaise sauce.. Cook the lentils first, add extra tomatoes and veg. Cheap and they soak up the flavour.
I love the sound of that, lentils are a great meat replacement.
Another great video and recipe. I love spag bol although not had it in ages might be doing one soon. It's a good inexpensive meal. Meat four veg with the tin tomatoes pasta pretty balanced meal and tasty too. Great tip that grating the veg i would never have thought of that. Recently subscribed so ploughing through your playlist. Entertaining informative and some good tips hacks. Enjoying the channel.
Very nice review Adam
I love spag bol gotta Try your recipe .
Thank you adam.

Thank you Ann 😁
again brilliant 👍👍👍
Thank you 😁
Two words Adam: YOU LEGEND! Very happy to have you back every week. 🙌
You're a legend mate, all of you. You make this channel worthwhile
Brilliant Adam, was very nervous about cooking until I came across your videos and method of cooking.Love this type of food, budget meals but nutritious and tastey Adam.Getting much more confident in the kitchen nowthanx to you and your down to earth persona and simplified recipes with ingredients we all have access to,that nigella does my nappa in,your a breath of fresh air.Have you done any simple curries as I cannot find any, chicken curry etc which I like and can freeze. Most of your budget meals you can freeze which is important for time & cost...Thanx Adam your a goodn'
That was a lovely comment to read mate, and its an absolute pleasure to help. Half of the battle in the kitchen is having the confidence, so good on you mate for pushing forward. As for curries, my butter chicken is popular if you want a treat, but to start you off I've got a cheats chicken tikka that's easy to make and uses tomato soup. It's on the channel mate 😊
Hi Adam, can't beat a good spag bol can you! Will have to make one this week xx
Absolutely Marie. Love a spag bol
The best thank you 😊
You're welcome hun x
Looks yummy, great idea grating the veg. Used to do that with my kids in the past. I hate celery so it dies in my fridge as I don't use it unless its a sorfrito like you have used. I just substitue with celery salt. You made me hungry now. You're turning into a proper lifestyle guru xxx
Thank you babs. I've got so much more content planned after I've moved. A lot more money saving stuff coming x
@@Adam_Garratt looking forward to it x
Very cool video
Looks amazing, I don't eat pasta anymore since my gastric bypass, I really do miss it. Great recipe Adam
Oh man pasta is so good. When spaghetti is cooked just perfect and it has that slight resistance to it. 😋
Looks good, Adam! As usual! 🤣
Thank you Aunty 😚
Easy/ good. Thanks Adam. Aussie Bob
Thank you Bob mate
Great recipe! One way to stretch the mince more would be to add ready-cooked lentils. They're nutritious, tasty and even cheaper. Mince and lentils go really well together because their textures are quite similar. Have you tried this or are you not a fan?
Someone else mentioned lentils, so I'm going to give it a go. I love lentils, i make dhals using them. 😋
I make all my sauces from scratch n also to make that meat sauce go further i use a carton of passata aswel as a tin on toms i get 8 adult portions for what has cost less then a quid for the sauce n i also grate the veggies it not only helps wiv feeding the kids but helps making the bolog sauce thicker so adding extra water to make it go further does not scrimp on taste at all 👍 im really enjoying your videos and the new ideas im getting to fit wiv my family is just amazing n i cant wait to write the nxt weeks meal plan n have a lot of new but cheap yet tasty meals thank u
You're most welcome. I hope your week goes well mate
Exactly how I make my quick bolognaise, I can vouch that it’s delicious xx
Thank you babs. Hope you're enjoying the weather this weekend. Too hot for me though 🤣
@@Adam_Garratt The weather hasn’t been that great up here Adam. Very windy, some light showers and not the sun that the south have. Today my feet were very cold and unless I’ve turned into a reptile when I wasn’t looking, that shouldn’t happen in June lol. I’ll do you a swap, get yourself north and I’ll head south xxxx

Hi Adam….loving your cheap as chips meals……👍👏
You're welcome buddy
Well done, easy and delicious! Actually I cooked something very similar today. Instead of mince meat, I used a good quality sausage, otherwise it was very similar - onion, carrot, celery (I used the celery root), white wine, chilli paste, tomato paste, vegetable stock; and then favorite pasta - penne and of course cheese on top :) Cheers!
Sounds delicious mate! Thank you 😁
I thought let's get a small packaged block of Parmesan cheese rather than the one in the container. Then I realised I won't use it up fast enough....so....... I grated it on the finest mouli grater setting, put it in a food bag and froze it out flat. Now all frozen and shaken down it should good sprinkled on straight from the freezer and taste better as technically fresh.
Also if you chop up unused mushrooms, celery or peppers and stick them in the freezer you can add them straight into already cooking casseroles and things but DON'T let them thaw first or they'll go mushy.
Good tips there Mate thank you
I love pasta, and nothing with an obscene amount of cheese. I made a shortened version of years certainly not 4 hours to make.
So true about the jars of sauce. Disgusting. whoever makes them must have had their taste buds removed. Well done Adam. Started to miss you. Glad you're ok!!!😊😊😋
Thank you Anne 😚
🏴❤️🏴 you can also use half mince, and half red lentils, keeps the cost well down and doubles the quantity xx 💋🏴❤️🏴
If food prices keep increasing like this, we will only be watching videos to have a dinner.
It's so depressing isn't it. I'll keep doing what I can though my friend, stay positive
The only difference Italians actually use home made tomatoes sauce. Your recipe is good.
Great dish Adam 👍🏻my local Lidl sell boxes of mixed fresh fruit & veg for £1.50, which are good value. 😊👍🏻
That does sound like good value! I'd like to get back into growing my own veggies again when I move. Have a great afternoon Mandy x
Very nice Adam just made this - what I did was sweat down a chopped green pepper and mushrooms before I started cooking the mince then took them out and just added in at the end with the grated stuff - I will say grating an onion not fun! I’m not soft about them making my eyes water, but what was released from grating nearly took my eye out 😂 quite fiddly too as it all fell apart, but got there in the end and the carrot etc were a lot easier. Worth it though we both enjoyed!
I can relate to the onion grating 🤣. Also on the channel, I've got a more traditional Italian Bolognese recipe if you wanted to try that. It is very different though and has pork, milk and white wine in. It's a lot more meaty than what we call a Bolognese
@@Adam_Garratt To be honest I avoid food that involves putting wine in - From the age of 15 to 31 I was a binge drinker / heading for an alcoholic (I’d reached the point of having a sly can at 8:30am to get rid of the hangover towards the end). 38 now and been tee total 7+ years. I know alcohol burns off in food but it’s a bit of a phobia at this point and I don’t want to put it in my body in any way 🙂
@@Dessan01 oh bless you mate, good on you for making that positive change. It couldn't have been easy
That would go nice with a big fillet steak ,nice video
Thanks
You're welcome Peter
I saw that grating of the veg thing on some occaision fairly recently and tried it on - something and was not keen mind you I used my Magimix thingy. So the next time I will use the slicing blade instead and try that.
When ever some recipe calls for sticking it in the oven for a couple of hours I put it in the Slow Cooker which comes to a nice simmer and cook it until I am fed up. I have always objected to putting a 4kW Oven on for most things.
I think air fryers, slow cookers, halogen ovens, pressure cookers are going to make a come back. I did a test the other week to see how much it cost to cook a simple beef stew in my gas oven and it cost a small fortune, nearly £3!
@@Adam_Garratt :-) I have al of those devices used in absolute preference to the Main Oven (Electric) and I also have a Mini Oven thingy which does the other things like a single Pie.
My cooking is electric and I have been reading my Meter daily for some years now since some salesman told me there electricity would be a better deal and I knew it wouldn't be but needed to prove it. It wasn't. I am an X-Electrical Engineer so I still retain the tools and know how to do the measurements and a simple reading of the Demand Meter will be the most accurate +/- a Unit. However I also bought a Kasa Smart Plug which was supposed to measure the usage and whereas my Demand Meter said I had used 3-4 kWh (around a £1 at the moment) to brew my Homebrew beer the Kasa said 6-7kWh. It also says my Washing Machine uses 0.75kWh/Standard Wash and my Dishwasher uses 0.6kWh and they have little effect on the Demand Meter reading, so I have reduced my paranoia of doing the Laundry and the Dishes overnight. Cooking is still the largest (summertime) usage of electricity for me.
Nice one Adam looks tasty 😋🍻! Do you ever use a pressure cooker reduce cooking time ? Wondered what that webpage was for the discount stuff near to sell by date ….was going to send to a friend .
I've put an electric pressure cooker on my birthday wish list to the family as its my 40th in a few days, so maybe I'll get one and I can do some recipes with it. As for the site, if you go to my community tab, you'll see the post with the link. Cheers Pete

Hard to say really, but definitely an increase
Grating onions kills my eyes o.o
If you have a food processor with a grating attachment, use that. I just love a bit of punishment 🤣
Thanks for that comment, there are some weird food purists out there. It's your dinner, make it how you like!
