The Mystery of Lion's Rock: An Ancient Fortress in the Sky

- Rising dramatically from the emerald foliage of Sri Lanka and crowned by ancient ruins, this is the colossal monolith of Sigiriya, the ancient sky city. It's an achievement of human construction that seems almost too impressive to be believed.
The monumental architecture far exceeds the presumed capabilities of the time, sparking rumors, myths, and numerous theories about its construction-some even speculating on the involvement of mystical powers.
Built in the 5th century AD under the reign of King Kashyapa, this magnificent fortress is adorned with exquisite frescoes that provide insights into bygone eras, while its mysterious Mirror Wall, once polished to a gleam, holds centuries-old verses written by the many visitors it mesmerized.
Though Sigiriya's grandeur is evident, the methods behind its creation remain shrouded in mystery. Legend has it that a great king constructed this palace in the sky after a power struggle and patricide, seeking a fortress impenetrable to his avenging brother.
The labyrinthine water gardens, stone staircases, and advanced hydraulic systems point to a society well ahead of its time. Yet, for all its innovation, the city was abandoned soon after the king's death and reclaimed by nature, its stories waiting to be uncovered…
I am a Sri Lankan, and as a person who studied the history to this place, and as a person who has been to Sigiriya multiple times, this is a good video.
Thank you for your insight, made me appreciate the video a bit more 🙂
It seems to be a fantastical place, be blessed.
Thanks for sharing. It must be amazing to see in person.
Riiiiight. Sri Lanka... and next I'm going to Wakanda. 🤣
BuT THOSE DO NOT LOOK like lions paws they look more like iguana or reptile claws
On my first Western Pacific cruise with the US Navy, I read Authur C. Clark's The Fountains of Paradise. The opening chapter takes place at Sigiriya 1500 years ago. I was fascinated by his descriptions of the place. I hoped to see it someday. As fate would have it, on our return from the Persian Gulf, we learned that our ship, the USS Constellation, would be stopping in Columbo, Sri Lanka. I rushed to the special services office and there it was, a tour to Sigiriya. Two of my shop mates and I signed up. It was amazing. I hope to return someday because this was in 1979, before they put in the stairs, and it was just too risky to me. I didn't make it to the top. In some or the pictures you can see the carved-out footholds under the current stairs. One misplaced foot, and you are dead.
I haven’t been to many architectural ancient places but this is one I did go to 15 years ago.
Whilst at the top of the rock, contemplating exactly how it was constructed in the middle of nowhere and all those centuries ago, blows the mind. We were there until sunset and it was definitely a profound experience that left a lasting impression that the past was not as we have been led to believe
you're so lucky lol
I had never heard of this city before. How very interesting. Thanks for spotlighting it.
Ditto!😮❤
The evidence is so overwhelming that our ancient ancestors were far, far more advanced than modern scientists are giving them credit for. The ancient stone work from around the world is undeniable proof of this.
And that we've been doing advanced things for much much longer than modern scientists or Big Archaeology give our ancient ancestors credit for doing.
arrogance, pride and hubris is (contemporary) human's nature.
you don't need fancy tools to do great works. you need a fancy mind. and humans have had a fancy mind for at least 100,000 years.
No it’s not. Ancient peoples were master stone workers and had techniques we just don’t know about. If there was more advanced technology being used, there would be actual direct evidence; not just barely circumstantial evidence that only indirectly infers that some kind of advanced technology was used. Will I say there was no advanced technology that we don’t know about? No. It is always possible. But there should be something more that supports such technology than some well carved stone structures. And when one considers that so many different civilizations around the world had amazing stone structures, it’s hard to imagine that they all had such advanced technology. It’s far more likely that people were just extremely skilled in stone masonry. Incredulity is not a Scientific Methodology. Find the actual technology and we’ll talk.

“Big Archeology.” 😆😂🤣😂😆😂😆😂🤣😂🤣😆😂🤣
You’ve never met any actual archeologists, have you? The idea that there’s this worldwide plot to hide some great truth in archeology is ludicrous. Are there occasionally some older professor types who get stuck in a rut and refuse to acknowledge new evidence on occasion? Absolutely. But the vast majority of archeologists are beer drinking, crazy cowboys of science who love working in the dirt and camping outside for long periods and would absolutely LOVE to discover something new that turns archeology on its head and makes their career. The idea that archeologists are a bunch of ivory tower academics gatekeeping the field and hiding evidence of some great secret truth about the past is just the crap that scammers use to sell trips to archeological sites of interest. There’s no such thing as “Big Archeology.” 😂🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♂️🤣
An absolutely fascinating place to visit. I spent an afternoon there on a recent trip to Sri Lanka and it was no where near long enough. One of the, must visit, places on this planet.
I'm irish and I can tell you they shouldn't call it lions rock. Lions have four claws with hair. That has three weird either reptilian or dinosaur feet. Not lions feet. I'm smiling here and I coped it. Stevie wonder can see there not lions feet
Could be bird feet
Birb.
@@TezcaSounds a bird of prey maybe I'm not up on nature. Eagle maybe. That's why I said dinosaur aren't they now birds
I think the reason they believe they are lion's paws is because the site translates as "Lion's rock".
But I agree with you, those are not lion's paws. Birds are also 3 clawed but they're skinny talons; this is more reptilian, like what you find in biped dinosaurs
Do you always announce that you are irish...before commenting on every UA-cam video...or is there a specific reason for it on this video ?.😎
Lions have 4 rounded toes. Those are lizard feet like that of a monitor lizard of some sort. The scales should have been a dead give-away
These channel doesn’t focus to much of facts with more than a glance at a web article. Still has interesting content, just have to take it with a pinch of salt.
Owls have three toes with claws and Ishtar's sister's animal familiar is an owl. They worship her in Bohemian Grove.
So glad you made this channel. I love this stuff.
I’ve been watching dark 7 since they were dark 5 in 2014, at first there was a lot of mistakes and no speaking, just writing and weird creepy music.
Mystery history is another one you should check out
I like your profile pic
Ancient Sri Lankans were masters of hydrology, there are many man made lakes and irrigation systems throughout the country that modern thinking cannot quite comprehend. Also there are other sites around the country that have ancient artifacts that look to be cut with laser precision and smoothness. Lions Rock is the most popular of these sites. Who knows what else lurks underneath the foliage.
If the king was so unpopular that he needed to build this fortress to survive, how did he find a workforce willing to build it for him?
He found it by employing tactics that made him unpopular.
Good question.
@@attemptedunkindness3632 Sure but what stopped them from revolting? If he was already unpopular before forcing his subjects into slave labor it would naturally only get worse. I’m not really trying to argue with you btw I just find it silly when archaeologists claim to “know” anything
@@DiscGoStu Simple: Yet more unpopular tactics, then you die, then it's somebody else's problem. Has less to do with anthropologist (the word you are actually searching for as opposed to archaeologist), and more to do with just how governance and social strata works, which incidentally also falls under anthropology and not archaeology.
You want to talk about the technology and materials used to make the Parthenon? That's archaeology. Want to talk about the methodology and peoples that actually built the Parthenon? That's anthropology.
@@attemptedunkindness3632Anthropologists are Archaeologists. Anthropology is a subset of archaeology.
Thank you for doing these!
Thank you for a glimpse of this remarkable place
There was already a comprehensively developed infrastructure of pools, structures, and access points, etc., on this rock, some of which were already perhaps even thousands of years old, and this last person to do major renovations is simply considered the sponsor of all that is there now.
As far as extra terrestrials helping to build it - sometimes a sky city is just a sky city. Humans are capable of spectacular things all on our own.
Et Schme te. Humans have gone through major resets so many times. Our history is for sure millions of years old.
Sounds good until your trash about things we can't do today and things we have no clue how they built these beautiful places all over the world!¡!
I remember reading about this one, to me at least its another piece of the puzzle that lends to ancient civilizations being much more advanced than modern times give credit, they just did some things in a different way than we do today we are much more rigid in our thinking.
Yeah, people in the past weren’t as dumb as many scientists presume..
It's called lost technology.
If history tells us anything it’s that Civilisations grow and collapse along with their skills and techniques.
The HUGE missing point here is that the climate 1500 years was very different, wetter. It was not even mentioned...BIG mistake.
@@rickden8362 same on many of the sites people talk about.
Been here. There is some amazing art work at the top
Truly a marvel of construction and engineering. The fact this was built by hand withoút the use of machinery. That is truly a remarkable achievement for it's time. 💪🏻🙏🏻✨
You believe that?
This channel is the only way that I will ever be able to see & learn about remarkable places like this. The rest of the world is so much older & mysterious than the America that I am stranded in. Thanks.
Wow! Mind boggling. Loved your vid!
Wow such a great video about this amazing place. Thanks for sharing.
Stunning. Like many places. Machu Pichu, Ankor Watt....we have certainly built some intriguing things in our history.
This is one of your best videos! Very interesting!
Lions paws? Three toes? No way! It's an accurate representation of some creature with three toes and claws, whether real or mystical. But not a lion.
Yeah it gave off reptilian vibes to me. Those were not cat paws.
@@brianwhedon8442 yup
Obviously Turtle 🐢
Lyin' about Reptiles
The rock is literally named lion
what an amazingly beautiful location & construction ♡♡
“Exquisite frescos”
Fascinating!
Excellent video D5 👍👍
Amazing 👏 bravo!
Very awe inspiring. Thank you.
Just as plausible, if not more so, it could have been constructed in ante-diluvian times, thousands of years ago, to protect people from the impending flooding due to rising sea levels. On another not, it's uncanny the parallels this location has to Machu Pichu. Don't you think? Or am I reading too much into the evidence?
I think it's Ante-diluvian, though the art work is less old.
Great video
I like the original intro still.. you get the full effect of the sound.
You’re video is an good as always😊
Fascinating structure and city.
Never heard of this before, very interesting . Great video.
It's awesome to be able to learn and watch this as I unfortunately know I can never personally see it in person. Beautiful ❤
That into music, baby.
Thank you !
how have i never heard of this place? 😍 wow
It’s intriguing to think that it’s possible and even likely that sites like this were built on top of older ancient structures.
INTRO SONG! INTRO SONG!! WOOOOOO!!🥰
One video about this also mentioned the ‘sunken’ garden area below the entrance (Lion’s paws) had the ability to be flooded via the same water system, thus disabling invaders.. Also it said there were huge precariously balanced ‘trip-boulders’ that could be released by a lever onto unwanted intruders. These boulders had to be secured to prevent tourists trying (or more like pushing) their luck trying to move it. Oops! = Out of place artifact.. 😮
Thats what I have seen in videos and believe.
Good video ji ❤HD video
This video, and this channel is impossible not to love. Excellent job, the narrator is superb, subject matter is always compelling. Thank you so much!
Isn’t it common for us to be amazed at how intelligent our ancestors were about making staight lines, understanding water flows, cutting and moving rocks? I try to believe they were smarter than us because they had more to plan, coordinate, defend, build, survive.
Thank you for not having a.i. narration!!!
❤❤ thanks ❤❤
Modern societies couldn't do this impressive crafts, because they would always watch their mobile phones, looking, whether they are still connected with their socialites or finding their way. Or searching for their weather app, instead of lookin in the skies...
Respect for this ancient masterminds with their limited technical abilities, but with their open minded spirits and the will and self consciousness, to make ends meet...
'Dark5 - AnMyst'........
WOW, Such Great work and your pronunciation of such a difficult language is done Quite Well!!!
Nice intro 😉
Exquisite. Indeed. 😃
Human history is the biggest mystery !
Yooooo iconic theme
Paws for thought!
Best intro song of all time
These people could do things we would find extremely difficult to achieve today.
not really.
Never heard of this place, pretty cool tho.
I had heard about the actual underground water systems that go to a lake near by also the captured water on top that would actually flood people on demand who are trying to invade and get onto the Lions Rock I thought that was pretty interesting
0:38- Dang! Ancient Sri Lankan women were stacked!
Just by looking at the paws on its base, confirms that this is a antediluvian structure; later inhabited!
The water system technology was known by Ancient Rome nearly 750 years before this. So its definitely possible regular ol human beings who were likely ENSLAVED did most of the hard work, while the educated elites told them what to do.
That was one hell of a giant tree
So far one of my favourite videos from this channel
A marvel but very possible
Man structures like this really make it easy to question what we actually know about the capabilities of people in the ancient world 🤔
👍Dark5 ancient mysteries !
You always have perfect timing!
There was another documentary which pointed out that those feet are reptilian/dinosaurid and not lions paws at all, interesting because cover-ups seem to be a common theme in our ancient history forward. It's all very intriguing
As usual, the narration voice is a bit too fast. Slow it down a little.
Those are not Lions paws.
I would love To go see such beauty 🤩👵🏻👩🌾❣️
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
This is Ravanas fort built much earlier and renovated many times by many kings, This is not just a rock, this fortress had a 7 rounds of fort walls with moats and many other features.
proofs ?
@@top1000gadgets see praveen mohan vedios on sigiriya, where we can clearly see from drones that it has many circles of fortification kilometers apart.
There used to be a video of a guy showing how the ground gardens were set up depicting a diagram of how to build laser technology
Can’t be impossible if they did it. Our brain size hasn’t changed in a very very long time. Humans have always been as smart as we are now it’s just the technology used has gotten better… but in some cases has made it worse, we won’t have a legacy to leave for thousands of years , unless in the right environment where decay is slower.
There is a say that Sigiriya built far before King Kashyapa. It was actually gone back to Rawana time. Kashyapa actually re use the place as his place
Why won't mainstream just admit that this was underwater..
Those look for like Dragon paws to me, maybe the head was originally a dragons head? We dont know we weren't there.
Darkness!
I was there, 4000 years ago. The food was great.
🤪
A pimp named slickback
obviously they had a vast understanding of hydraulics, im sure they had a lift. that would be the obvious observation
Its a master piece
We're all on a ancient fortress in the sky
I think the mumbo jumbo of alien intervention is a disrespect to the ingenuity of the talented engineers & builders of the time. We don't know how Romans made their concrete even today - does that mean aliens did it? Of course not. What an amazing place - definitely on my bucket list 🫰
It looks like a giant tree stump that the angels left behind before the great flood
Angels??? Yeah riiiiiight 😂
@@Vikface1978Just the dumb nickname Christianity has changed
Three toed lions? I call bullshit....
i would argue 2 things: !) The paws are NOT that of a lion, but of an entirely different ceature. A monster lost to time. Reason: A lion has 5 claws in a paw; not 3. And 2) the paws are life size...Reason: The lion on Sri Lanka was extinct on the island LONG before humans inhabited it...
The Cats Lair ,Thundercats HOOOO!
Some tree stumps do have a hole in the center you know
for historical studies 0:38
i can understand extra terrestrial involvement in passing knowledge to the peoples who built these structures around the world but not hands on building.. unless we are whats left of the "ETs"
Modern archaeology would just say this is a natural formation 😂
EVERYONE who has tried to draw a circle knows exactness is NOT a hand-made quality. In FACT, they are hallmarks of precision tools and or machinery.
Most likely that was ground level at 1 time🤔

“The Sri Lankan lion (Panthera leo sinhaleyus ), also known as the Ceylonese lion, is an extinct prehistoric subspecies of lion, excavated in Sri Lanka. It is believed to have become extinct prior to the arrival of culturally modern humans.” -the internet
Those look like paws to you ? Those are 3-toed lizard feet.
The feet are not lions paws, but rather lizards feet
