- This video shows the Top 20 countries with the most total cumulative International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) gold medals since 1967.
The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is an annual physics competition for high school students. It is one of the International Science Olympiads. The first IPhO was held in Warsaw, Poland in 1967.
Each national delegation is made up of at most five student competitors plus two leaders, selected on a national level. Observers may also accompany a national team. The students compete as individuals, and must sit for intensive theoretical and laboratory examinations. For their efforts the students can be awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals or an honourable mention.
The theoretical examination lasts 5 hours and consists of three questions. Usually these questions involve more than one part. The practical examination may consist of one laboratory examination of five hours, or two, which together take up the full five hours.

As a Physics related undergraduate from China, I know the 49th IPhO absloute winner Yang Tianhua杨天骅 well. Because my girlfriend used to be his schoolmate. What made me crazy is that he got the prize just two years after he first heard IPhO games at the second year of junior high school. I believe that he will be the top physicist among the world in the future.
Also I respect USSR, for its top-level Physics education. When I read ten-volume series of textbooks : Landau's The Course of Theoretical Physics , a voice from my brain tell me" silly, you 'd better quit school "

@@pradipchaterjee9576 Landau's books is the base of advanced physics in most universities, and what I mean by advanced physics is not some challenging problems that require creativity like Irodov's book, but subjects much more abstract than what is in the Irodov's book. The hardest part is not to solve problems but actually understand the subjects hahahahha.

Strange thing I've noticed too, in almost all these olympiads, Russia does really well. Countries like China and South Korea being high on the list makes sense, considering their high average IQs, but Russia is a bit of an underdog here.

I am surprised the USA has any. I do not know of a single school which does this competition and I have lived/participated in schooling in 4 different states. Math olymipiad: Yes. Physics? No.

For those, who are asking, why India is lacking behind in physics and mathematics, should consider the fact that an average bright Indian student starts investing his/her high school age preparing for JEE ADV, the syllabus and pattern of which is far different ( more precisely, tougher) than the IMO or ipo exams.
I wouldn't say it's tougher than IMO or IPhO but it sets the bar pretty high. Most Indians don't even know/care about Olympiad,jee and neet is way more important than anything else for 18 year olds.

Considering the population, no.1 is singapore with 6mil, no.2 is hungary with 10mil, no.3 is taiwan with 24mil.
Considering the ratio of population to select competitors, such as China's 1.4 billion population, South Korea's 50 million population, South Korea sending a team of five players, China sending 28 teams or one team per province, I doubt if South Korea will have a chance to win the gold medal.
