Looks like you don't know the context of this videoclip. At that moment, Mel was unable to move due to its cancer treatment. The producers had to do "something" for the release of the track without having the duet available...

No one lives forever but some are taken way too soon - at only 23, Mel Appleby was one. But like a shooting star, she burned gorgeously bright for the short time she was here. God bless her, so very sad for her family and of course her sister Kim in particular, they were obviously very close.

@hayabusabart i am glad you liked the puppets. i am sorry that others don't, but we worked very hard with a specialist puppet-maker to make them as charming as we could. i was keenly aware that the circumstances were very sad.
@Hugo Malice the puppet-makers, who were also the operators, took the puppets back after we had finished filming them. i have no idea where they are now. i would have liked to have to kept them.

One thing's for sure, Kim won't have the puppets - both she and Mel hated them, and were angry their record company decided to make a video replacing them with a pair of marionettes!
I don't blame them, I think it looked cheap. They should just have shown the full live performance we see in the video from Monreaux - they looked sharp and danced beautifully.
All that crap with the private eye makes no sense, and the puppets only draw attention to the fact the real thing aren't in the video!

  • @glamdolly30
    @glamdolly30 2 роки тому +31

It's an upbeat song, but the 1987 video always makes me feel sad. Mel was very sick with the return of the cancer that would take her life in January 1990 aged just 23. So this video was put together using an actor to play a private eye, with footage from a Mel and Kim live performance in Montreux, plus those creepy puppets to depict the sisters.
The biggest problem with this video was that Mel and Kim weren't consulted or told about it, and both hated it. Kim said she felt "devastated" when she switched on the TV one day and saw it out of the blue. Mel commented from her sick bed that she would rather no video had been made at all.
The sisters must have been feeling pretty low in '87, fearing Mel's prognosis was poor and that the end of her life - and 'Mel & Kim' - was looming. To switch on the TV and see that their record company had replaced them with a couple of marionettes, must have felt like a kick in the teeth. I think it was surprisingly tactless of their record company/management not to seek their approval for the puppets or even keep them in the loop.
IMO the 'Private Eye & Puppets' theme looks cheap, and only succeeds in drawing attention to the fact the real Mel and Kim aren't in it! Their absence is a chilling omen of the tragedy to come. It would surely have been much better to have just used the footage of their Montreux performance, in which they both look healthy, happy and chic, and dance like a dream.
'FLM' was Mel and Kim's penultimate single, and reached no 7 in the UK charts.

Tbf even though the marionettes was a fail, those sort of things in video clips was in vogue at the time. Consider Genesis “land of confusion” which was released the previous years. But yeah, whatever the producers were going for clearly wasn’t done well.
And obv in conjunction with the cancer and lack of consultation, it was still in poor taste.

@@nocomment4848 Apart from the fact that I think the marionettes are quite cute: The biggest difference between this video and Land Of Confusion is Genesis themselves had the idea to collaborate with Spitting Image.

Mel was very sick at this point hence why they're only in the video via live footage someone dug up. This was 80's - way before they could do stuff like digital fairies to hide the fact Ginger Spice had jumped ship from the Spice Girls in "Viva Forever" :-)

The footage they show in this video was from the Montreaux (I've probably misspelled it) festival from 1987. That festival is huge. Just thought, I'd throw that info in there. I appreciate that you wrote this 6yrs ago, so this comment might be a surprise to you.

This video scared me to death as a kid, seem ridiculous now. Something about those puppets (although I seem to remember them having milk bottle top eyes, which they obviously don't!) and the rumours at the time as to why they were used. Oh and the eyes on the poster following the guy haunted me further, I really found it scary as hell.

@@peterschofield1553 I agree, I read Mel and Kim weren't consulted about the whole marionettes & detective themed video, and they both hated it.
Kim saw it out of the blue on telly one day, and said she was "Devastated", and when Mel found out she said she would rather no video was shown at all!
Seems to me the obvious thing to do was to use the Montreaux live performance, which was excellent with the sisters looking great and dancing beautifully. In 1987 Mel's cancer had returned and they were facing the terrible possibility that 'Mel and Kim' was on the way out, as tragedy loomed.
I imagine switching on the TV and seeing your record company has replaced you with a couple of puppets, must have felt pretty hurtful!
