One thing's for sure, Kim won't have the puppets - both she and Mel hated them, and were angry their record company decided to make a video replacing them with a pair of marionettes! I don't blame them, I think it looked cheap. They should just have shown the full live performance we see in the video from Monreaux - they looked sharp and danced beautifully. All that crap with the private eye makes no sense, and the puppets only draw attention to the fact the real thing aren't in the video!
The private detective always reminds me of a young Kevin Costner! I wonder who he is and what became of him? I don't recall seeing him in anything else - maybe he wasn't an actor?

It's an upbeat song, but the 1987 video always makes me feel sad. Mel was very sick with the return of the cancer that would take her life in January 1990 aged just 23. So this video was put together using an actor to play a private eye, with footage from a Mel and Kim live performance in Montreux, plus those creepy puppets to depict the sisters. The biggest problem with this video was that Mel and Kim weren't consulted or told about it, and both hated it. Kim said she felt "devastated" when she switched on the TV one day and saw it out of the blue. Mel commented from her sick bed that she would rather no video had been made at all. The sisters must have been feeling pretty low in '87, fearing Mel's prognosis was poor and that the end of her life - and 'Mel & Kim' - was looming. To switch on the TV and see that their record company had replaced them with a couple of marionettes, must have felt like a kick in the teeth. I think it was surprisingly tactless of their record company/management not to seek their approval for the puppets or even keep them in the loop. IMO the 'Private Eye & Puppets' theme looks cheap, and only succeeds in drawing attention to the fact the real Mel and Kim aren't in it! Their absence is a chilling omen of the tragedy to come. It would surely have been much better to have just used the footage of their Montreux performance, in which they both look healthy, happy and chic, and dance like a dream. 'FLM' was Mel and Kim's penultimate single, and reached no 7 in the UK charts.
Tbf even though the marionettes was a fail, those sort of things in video clips was in vogue at the time. Consider Genesis “land of confusion” which was released the previous years. But yeah, whatever the producers were going for clearly wasn’t done well. And obv in conjunction with the cancer and lack of consultation, it was still in poor taste.
