Valerie Harper wore the dress she won the Emmy in, in the episode titled rhoda the beautiful, on Mary Tyler Moore. Just a classic brunette beauty. Miss you, Rest In Peace.
Martha Marvelette YES IT IS! I loved that dress when I watched this show for the first time on Hulu. God she was beautiful, inside and out. Terrific actress, even better person. RIP hope you and Mair’ are laughing it up in heaven.
My God, the way Jack Benny and Lucille Ball -- those two hams -- were so patronizing to Valerie Harper, But she rose above it with her usual grace, charm, wit, and talent. Rest in power, Valerie.
Supposedly, they had to rethink the role of Rhoda when she auditioned. The character was supposed to be frumpy and homely, and Valerie was perfect for the role, except that she was beautiful.
@@mthivier She was always pretty facially but she lost a lot of weight in the MTM show when she transitioned over to Rhoda, so she had been this insecure girl with a weight problem and became this beautiful swan. So she made changes.
@@TigerEye54 funny thing is that I never really thought of Valerie as overweight, even during the first season of MTM. She was definitely "curvy", but then, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing to to be. (Marilyn Monroe was also curvy, after all.) Compared to the stick figures whom we define as beautiful nowadays, I thought Valerie was always beautiful.
@@TigerEye54 - She never really had a weight problem. The wardrobe team on the show dressed her in baggy clothing to give off the impression that she was heavier than what she actually was........ To further illustrate that Valerie Harper never had a weight problem, this clip where she collects her Emmy is prove of that.
Long before her days on MTM and Rhoda, Valerie teamed up with Lucille Ball on a play called Wildcat. If anyone had noticed, you would see Valerie ask Lucy, "Remember me in Wildcat?"
But at the same time, I feel like she held her own in between these two comedic greats . Such a natural vibe. And the fact that she didn't forget the people that helped put her onstage.
reading "I, Rhoda" now. and I love the book! so interesting to read about her amazing career, her spirit has always been so real, so honest. I feel like Valerie is my next door neighbor. and I can't put down the book. We love you Valerie!
Omg to just see the happiness on Valerie's young beautiful face as well as Ed and Mary. You just want to freeze that moment. The contemporary entertainment industry is barren of talent like that.💕
Everyone looked so young and full of life. It's sad that people like Jack Benny and Lucille Ball are gone from our midst. // Gotta add that Valerie Harper looked amazing. A beautiful and elegant brunette in that black dress. She was a lovable personality, a lovely lady.
Nearly 2 years after Valerie's 3-month terminal diagnosis, she is still with us. I have no doubt she was the 2nd-most beautiful woman of the 1970s, behind only my mother (R.I.P.). May Valerie be with us for a very long time, with her beautiful smile and her positive attitude!
I've met and interacted with many many celebrities in my hospitality job. But without a doubt, Valerie Harper was the best. The sweetest, most humble and polite woman. Layer the day I first met her she saw me out of uniform outside my place of business and she greeted me by my name! She remembered me and used my name. A genuinely nice person! RIP Valerie!!!
Happier days. Time goes so quickly. Reading Valerie's memoir, a wonderful person and life, so much more than just Rhoda. Hope for her healing and peace.
Before actors, singers and musicians deluded themselves into believing that simply being in the entertainment industry could also give them a voice in criticizing current and shaping future public policies. Worse yet, some who ran for and won elections later had their sordid pasts force them out of office, or go on a public apology tour insisting it was "consensual sex"'. The latter became an eye-rolling, running joke awhile back, bec the statements were as creative as a form letter.
@@msr1116 - Do you include Ronald Reagan in this as a probably Mediocre Actor who ran for PUblic office and because of the backing and basically being the PUppet of very Wealth and Powerful people became President of the USA. Real evidence in that Election in 1980 that the Reagan team made a deal with the Ayatollah and his government to keep the Hostages till Reagan got elected so Carter would lose to Reagan. Many would call that Treason.
@@HoldenNY22 ....Yes, long ago I heard that very allegation. Kindly provide the "real" evidence you refer to and I'll read it over. Don't tell me to Google it---you're making the claim and so it's up to you, counselor, to credibly support your case.
Valerie is still with us, so lets enjoy with her each of her days, and hopefully months and years ahead. Of her role as Rhoda, she rightly praised the brilliant writers, but she should know also that without her brilliance the classic one liners would have fallen on deaf ears.
I would have loved to seen the whole video of this, leading up to Jack Benny and Lucille Ball announcing the winners - the comedy must've been good. Judging by Jack Benny's comments, I'll assume that Lucille Ball did most of the talking, if not all of it lol And, although I already knew that Valerie Harper was a beautiful woman, seeing this time warp video of her as an adult, I didn't know (at the time, watching the MTM Show and Rhoda in reruns in the '80s) just HOW beautiful looking she really was/is
if i had won an award presented by jack benny and lucy ; i would have started out by saying " just the experience of being on stage with 2 great classy people equals out to any award"
Valerie Harper was in the chorus of Lucy's Broadway show, Wildcat. That's what she was referring to, although it's doubtful that Lucy would've remembered her.
As with the premature obituary (in 1897) of author Mark Twain, whose reply to the falsehood was "The report of my death was an exaggeration," it appears the reports of Valerie Harper's imminent departure from this life have also been premature.
The MTM Show was never the same once the character of Rhoda spun-off, IMO. Mary's home life w/ her friend Rhoda (and to a lesser extent Phyllis) gave the series variety. Once Rhoda left, the show was almost exclusively around the newsroom (with occasional visits to Mary's apartment by her co-workers). Rhoda's character was the most real on the show, again IMO.
I respect your right to your opinion, of course, but I couldn’t agree less. Part of what made this show such a classic is that the stories and the characters, especially Mary’s character, evolved with the times. As amazing as Rhoda and Phyllis were, the first two seasons in particular seem dated to me now in a way that the later seasons do not. It goes against intuition for most people because the Rhoda and Phyllis characters and the actors who portrayed them were so strong, but I don’t think the quality of the show suffered one bit overall for their leaving, and that’s a testament to the producers, the writing staff, and the actors who remained with the show. For me, Seasons 5 and 6 were probably the best quality overall.
Betty White was not part of the cast at the time of this award. This Emmy was for for the first season (1970-1971). Betty White made her first appearance as Sue Ann Nivens during the fourth season and didn't become a regular until the fifth or sixth season.
A recent NBC-TV documentary about Harper (hosted by Meredith Vieira) revealed Harper's terminal brain cancer to be in almost complete remission. The actress best known as TV's "Rhoda Morgenstern," it seems, will be around awhile longer, at least long enough to be a contestant of ABC's "Dancing With The Stars."
Leave it to Benny to upstage everyone with his brilliant line:" Talk into this one, I've hardly said anything." 2:18 One of those many lines of his, which is funny, until you realize it goes deeper, and then it's hilarious.
Two great speeches, but the backdrop of Jack Benny and Lucille Ball competing for jokes is the greatest thing ever.

Ed, Gavin and Betty all passed away in the same year, 2021. Amazing. All of the principal cast members are gone now. RIP.
Valerie was such a sweet, genuine person, she could roll with anything thrown at her and make it so endearing.
That's the same dress she wore in the episode where Rhoda won the Hempel's Department Store Beauty Contest !!!

I agree. Her voice was still audible without talking directly into either microphone.
Completely deserved awards!
RIP Valerie, and thanks again.
Rhoda Morgenstern and Ethel Mertz--two women who were more than sidekicks and who made their best friends better for knowing them.
Vivian Vance once made a very funny guest appearance on an episode of "Rhoda".
