Scott, just wanna say thank you for what you are doing. Not only are you creating the best music related channel, I have found the bass playing community to be the most positive and lighthearted people on the net. Been playing guitar for most of my life, and then when I changed to wanting to focus on bass fundamentals, what a change in the comment sections. Makes sense though, I have always thought, relatively speaking; if the drums are the heart, the vocals are the brain, and the guitar is the veins. Then the bass is the soul. It brings people closer to who they actually are. That's my belief to as why people in this community are so awesome. Cheers to you bud. Love your videos. Keep it up you beautiful bastard!!
He's been a beast forever. I remember first hearing him on Holdsworths Metal Fatigue album (Panic Station) and was blown away immediately. Plus it doesn't hurt to have a beast of a drummer as your main Go To guy on the kit.
Besides Garry Willis being an absolut beast! we have to give some props to this amazing drummer, how he is steadily holding this crazy beat is just awesome for this awesome bass play!
This is what mastery sounds like! Perfect technique, perfect intonation, and striking musicality. Mr. Willis is one of my all-time favorite bassists. And the drummer is superb - great groove, tasteful interactions, and a perfect foundation. Wow...
Who in the fucking fuck is this drummer? Fuckin hell...holy Jesus!!! I mean like Gary has been my God since my teenage years but who is this fucking drummer? WOW!!!!
I took a lesson with Gary a long time ago when he was teaching out of a shop in LA. It was like a newly licensed driver taking a lesson with Mario Andretti. Coolest guy ever but it felt like trying to learn Hungarian in an hour with the right hand business. I was a lost cause🤣. Two of the more achievable things that day were : “stop muting with your left hand Dave, do it all with the right. Free up the fingers.” and “try this bass. Light as balsa wood no varnish and no knobs. Then you won’t need to rely on battery draining electronics to get a good sound. Get the volume pedal instead.” He reminds me of Tom Waits and Picasso rolled into one. It’s like they were master level early on and they just said screw that and went beyond. Gary’s use of tone possibilities when he’s laptopping is insane here.
Saw Gary the first time in '86 with Wayne Johnson and then a couple of times in the late 80s with Tribal Tech. He was so blistering and badass that I went to few concerts/shows after that but nothing could compete....everybody else looked like an amateur in comparison....he was that freakin' good.. Havent been to a show since 1990 when Passport Records tanked and fusion died shortly thereafter... and IMO I'm not missing anything. .The 80s and (early 90s) were a magical time for this type of music...glad I got to experience it. Thank you Gary for ruining me for all other bands! You, Wayne, and Scott H have saved me a ton of money and time!
ive been playing bass since i was 14, and i'm not half bad. then i got me a 6 string fretless bass. turns out now i am half bad. i'm bad at the fretless half. i keep playing in the space between frets...you know, where its optimal to play if there were frets. turns out on a fretless bas this is very wrong. hard habit to break. i mostly get under shot flats and farty-sounds. good times.
Hey dude, this is really exciting stuff and I’d love to enrol and dig into this course. But I’m moving house in a couple of weeks and there’s no way I could afford to do this straight up. Is it going to be possible to enrol after April? Big love and thanks for all the help along the way already xx (im an ex member of your academy and have learnt so much from you through the past 4 years and I’m totally fascinated by Gary’s playing and approach to playing music in general) Thanks, love and BASS
my top three favorites: Jaco Pastorius Gary Willis (So wish I could afford the master class ;( ) Percy Jones Needless to say I'm a hardcore fretless player!
I was fortunate enough to see Brand - X at the Bottom Line on 4th Street in Manhattan Ny , around 1989. Percy Jones, truly incredible. Only Bassist I've ever seen with a Whammy Bar. I don't even think Jack Bruce had a Whammy. I am shocked no one else mentioned Percy. I was just going to when I saw your post. Be well.
@@laredolenny682 I wish I had the opportunity to see Brand-X, big fan of Collins as well. I saw Percy circa early 90s, as a solo performance. He is definitely one-of-a-kind. Saw Willis a couple times with Tribal Tech. Never saw Jaco live... RIP!
Does anyone remember when Percy’s last group was Tunnels? He was great in that group as well but I don’t really think he made the money he should have given the super great talent he has on fretless. When I saw him with Tunnels, my jaw dropped for the entire night. And don’t forget his work with Brand X with Phil Collins.
Cool technique and all but what about the song? I don't know, seems like many of these highly lauded bass/drum savants seem to play the same shtick over and over.. The neo-fusion-jazz groove thing (or whatever you call it) to me gets a little old after awhile. Just my opinion..
Hello Scott Just want to ask a few questions? what do you think of Hal Leonard Bass Guitar Lesson to help me learn to play Bass Guitar. than I like to move up and do your lesson. I know you have a lot of Bass Guitar players you look up to. I think my #1 is Damian Coccio what do you think. trying to throw you under the Bus. lol we do this in the USA. thanks for your videos. take care.
Secondly i cant tell if some of those tones are the bass or that old man farting/shitting his pants...but it sounds kool as hell...one things for sure Methuselah can play...well done father time...no actually it blew my mind motherfuckers awsome
Dude this whole track almost made me crap my pants. You said it Scott I was indeed blown away I tried to return and I got blown away again in fact. Wow.

I had the opportunity to be at a Tribal Tech concert years ago, I also got a photo with Gary. He's an unbelievable bassist.
Gary is a god, greetings from Argentina, You're a great inspiration for the musicians
everybody who disliked this prolly threw their bass guitar out the window
Hands down, best fretless bass player in the world... He's got the tone, technique, the writing chops.... also taste
yes, the best thing that ever happened on bass since Jaco!
absolutely this guy is a monster player
He's been a beast forever. I remember first hearing him on Holdsworths Metal Fatigue album (Panic Station) and was blown away immediately. Plus it doesn't hurt to have a beast of a drummer as your main Go To guy on the kit.
@@MarcPlaysDrums On that tune it's Jimmy Johnson playing, right? Willis plays on my favourite track, The Un-merry-go-round, and maybe some others
Hadrien Feraud 😁😁
Who is the drummer ? I don’t think you should post a music video with out mentioning who the players are...🤷♂️
BAZ INGA Thank you..!
Besides Garry Willis being an absolut beast! we have to give some props to this amazing drummer, how he is steadily holding this crazy beat is just awesome for this awesome bass play!
This is Gergo Borlai, come on, already today a legend
Godamn that snare sound is unbelievable. Everything in the video is actually.
first the drummer is a beast... but wowww look that three fingers technique in plucking hand
Gergő Borlai - drums
SamuraiBass serious economy of motion.
3>2,...plus a thumb👍
I think he should focus more on making that 'squeaky' sound,...that could be the next big thing.
@@joycesanders4898 hell yeah
like sungazer but more fretless and the players look happy
This is what mastery sounds like! Perfect technique, perfect intonation, and striking musicality. Mr. Willis is one of my all-time favorite bassists. And the drummer is superb - great groove, tasteful interactions, and a perfect foundation. Wow...
Gary‘s right hand keeps reminding of a big spider crawling all over the bass
Perfect analysis. I can see it now.
Boris The Spider has been taken ! I AGREE his hand is liquid
Fedor on the drums
😂😂😂😂 best comment
Is that Gergo Borlai on drums? He is soooo good)
Yup
Haaaa, only a true bassist would sequence everything BUT the drums! Take that!
Damn... I can still hear that Tribal Tech flavor on Gary's playing. He's such a legend.
@BAZ INGA Fist bump on that!
Now I understand what Scott meant by Gary Willis right-hand technique, cause oh my...!
Amazing players both of them!
A big thumbs up to the guy who did the mix. A very polished production.
Gary's a freaking machine! Flat out amazing. I just might have to sign up for this masterclass.
Gergo Borlai and Gary Willis... Gary is a great teacher and helped many bass players...
Why is the drummer not mentioned?
Gergő Borlai.
shy?
Because the uploader is a obviously an ASSHOLE !
My first bass I removed the frets and was never proficient lol
Gary Willis - BEAST. Drummer BEEEAAAST!!
That drummer is a monster! Damn!
Insane skills from both players. Willis is probably my all time favourite bass player.
What’s with the spotlight shining back at the camera?? Sheeesh!!
I went here to listen to the bassist and I am hypnotized by the drummer...

You're smile tells it all-Great friendly musicians and their LOVE of music making.....
