    I think the beds are tall enough that you don't need to lay the cardboard down to block weeds

    Thanks for the indo. There could be a problem with the layer of leaves below your planter blend. Soil science has discovered that water doesn't readily travel between differing layers. So water will hit the leaves and run along the bottom of the soil layer instead of moving into the leaves. If you have roots at that layer, they could become waterlogged and rot.
    Since leaves are an excellent soil lightener, just like vermiculite, an easy solution is to mix the leaves into the soil instead of separating them.

    We have gophers where we live, so cardboard will not do it! With wooden boxes, I staple 1/2inch mesh below so gophers, voles can't get through.

    Experience talking: roots of trees will grow thought the pavements into the raised bed in 2 years.
