- Lumber dealers hate these raised garden beds. I built concrete raised beds, galvanized roofing beds, and more. Thanks to Bespoke Post for sponsoring this video! I'm looking at the raised beds I've built over the last year to see how they held up. Did the concrete raised bed fall apart? Did the galvanized metal raised bed get too hot? Did my cedar raised garden beds rot away? In the end, I made 18 raised beds from 2x12x12 untreated lumber to save time so we could be ready for the planting season. What is that garden knife thingy that your wife is using? POG
Dude, so sorry you got chickenpox. Sucks as an adult
@HAXMAN Tou can use old motor oil from your vehicles and tractors to seal your wood to prevent it from rotting in the future. It's "organic" and effective.
I don't want to boast or anything, but I absolutely hate to garden. My sweet Daddy did his best to get me interested, but I hated it. Today, I have a bumper crop of Sand Burrs, Dandelions, some Goat-heads (another sticker for those not of the South), a few Green Briar bushes, and plenty of Johnson Grass, if you are interested I will send you some seeds, Haxman. Love your videos, sense of humor, and your nice family. Hope you get to feeling better soon. The only thing I remember about what Dad told me is "Don't plant onions next to your Irish Potatoes, because they will cry their eyes out", and Don't plant seeds 6 inches deep. They never come up. I tried to raise chickens and they didn't come up either if you plant them too deep. Love ya man!!
😄😂🤣
traditional Chinese-American gardener, these are literally the hacks my family had been using for generations, and city came after my grandparents! but just discovered and love ❤️ your channel! more people should learn to garden! please keep making awesome content!
I like this behind the scenes type videos. You've certainly been busy.
Thanks! I'm trying to make the channel a little more natural and vlogish.
I'm planning my backyard for this spring and have watched a lot of your videos, so I appreciate this update. Love the A frame chicken coop, quick, easy, and it works. I like your smokeless firepit too. Probably not going to use the cement board idea since you mentioned freeze cycles, expanding the beds and letting the old wood rot seems like the path of least resistance.
Thank you for this video. I built the roofing beds after seeing your video building it. Knowing that the last is good to hear. I made 6 4’ x 4’ beds which cost a bit more per sq ft but they are super sturdy. People thought I bought them like that and were impressed that I made them. I did cattle panel arches on either side of them as well. Hope to make more of them this year if inflation isn’t out of control. Stay healthy!
That's great to hear! Thank you. You as well!
BTW, as I understand it, one trick with chickenfeed is to put hot pepper into it -- birds don't have a receptor for capsaicin, so they don't care. Rodents, though, do, so they are much less likely to eat the chicken feed. A friend said he was losing as much as a third of his feed and he didn't even realize it.
Love the content and now I’m a new subscriber. I just made my first raised garden bed from cedar planks which are joined together by stones with slots in them to hold every thing together. Cost for lumber and the stones was about $140 bucks plus the cost of the 16 bags of dirt needed. It turned out great and I can’t wait to plant as soon as the weather improves.
I am glad this video came up on my feed, I never thought about fence pickets. That is a perfect solution to some second level raised herb beds in my greenhouse.
I have 2 neighbors with some big dogs that have a healthy bark , I really appreciate them , they let me know whats going on outside , they bark at me when I come home from work and I tell them “that’s a good dog” , I love ‘em
As always, your posts have so much good information done in a just plain common sense way. Really enjoy going through the ones UA-cam puts up. Thanks so much! Take care, be safe and God bless!
I built the cement backer beds this last month, cost wise it cost me about what it would for a standing raised cedar bed for two of them, I worried about the bulge too, but I drove 36" stakes around the sides before filling and now I have 1' 6" high beds that are 7x3 and 5x3 that haven't shown any issues. Cannot wait to plant. I'll try to remember to update if anything changes, but so far I am quite confident in the build.
Thanks for the update on this project. Definitely appreciate the information.
Glad you’re feeling better from your pox. Also Kim asking you to turn the pot around and day 5 of the 3 day coop build were massively funny. I’ve missed seeing your weekly vids on Friday, but your health is way more important. Two vids a week would be awesome.
Thank you so much! I'm going to make that my goal.
@@HAXMAN I didn't see anyone else comment about pox. Just wanted to add, make sure to lookup shingles (occurs later in people who had chicken pox).
Wish you luck! 🧡
This is great! We just had the (hopefully!) last snowfall for southern Idaho this weekend and I need to get our backyard garden up and going!
Hey Haxman. Love your projects and thanks for sharing videos! You inspire me to build and I've picked up a few good tips from you and your viewers! Thanks!
I miss me huge garden. I did the back to Eden method and fell in 💕 love with it. But I also had a raised bed and loved that as well. I loved that galvanized raisebed you had!!
Thanks for giving us an update how the different vegetable beds are holding up. I want to make one and I am going to try your cedar one!! Mahalo
Thank you for all your videos. They’re so informative. I love your laid back style. It’s like we’re just hanging out in your backyard. LoL.
You mentioned adding another 2x12 on top of the existing sides, beware that water will escape out between the boards. I did that as well. Maybe place some plastic on the inside. Thanks for all your info. Nice job.
That tip on getting a 16' length of cattle panel home was priceless. Obviously I didn't think of that... Sometimes the simple solutions are overlooked. Thanks!
I came to your channel just for the Roofing update haha. I went and priced it all out to add some behind my greenhouse. I'm so glad you did this. They are $33 per sheet here.
I just love your videos. I’m not afraid to make my own raised beds now. Blessings to you and your family🌺🙏🏻💕
@Haxman, Love your videos and humor. Tips from a long-time urban chicken owner, they will be much happier and healthier if they have as much room as possible to roam. We gave up on them free- ranging. They destroy everything. We finally settled on fencing off part of the yard that is just for the chickens. We created a small " backdoor" in the run for the chickens to access their yard. We covered the yard area aka run, with black pheasant netting found online. It protects them from hawks. We lock up the chickens every night after they go in the coop to sleep.
Thanks for the updates. Very interesting projects.
Glad to see a new video! I was thinking about doing some raised garden beds this spring. Vey Helpful! Keep up the good work!
Awesome! Thank you!
Glad you're feeling better! I had them as a child and then again as an adult. Part of the lucky 7% that can get them twice. Beware the shingles! I would say it was more annoying as an adult, only because of the responsibilities we have. Pain wise about the same. Love your content! Thanks for creating!
Very interesting. Especial the surprise at the end about the cattle panel.
Thank you!
In the Back to Eden method, you layer, don't mix - if layered, it does not rob the nitrogen out of the soil. Hope that helps :o)
20:30 that's a great idea.I have regular spruce raised beds that I know will be rotting away. You only need to build one side of the form if you do them in time.
Good stuff. I really am enjoying this casual tour style video
Awesome! Also loved the Captains Log about the coop 😂
Thanks!
Always nice to see your videos... no matter what topic and on whatever frequency you get around to. Take it easy Sir and good going😎 (nice segue from chickenpox to chicken coop... glad you're feeling better)
Thank you so much!
Glad you are on the mend! Your last comment on loading cattle panels was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!
I use backer board in Michigan for lots of things outside. Once painted with a good outdoor paint it holds up very well
Good to know.
Paul, Should we use a type of paint specifically for use on concrete?
@@PandoraBVV no the surface of backer board is not cement based. I just use a good outdoor paint.
Great updates, Adam. Kim, is a great camera operator! It was fun to recognize all the old projects as you toured “the estate grounds”. Glad to hear you’re feeling better. That reminds me - I need to get my shingles vaccine. 😄
Thanks Ed!
I'm binge-watching your videos. Thank you.
I love your sense of humor!
Glad your getting better!!
Nice video!!
Thank you!
i recently built a few raised beds out of 4x8x16 concrete blocks, so far its working well.
Awesome!
Glad your feeling better
Wow appreciate all the good information and experiences! Saw where one person used construction blocks for the raise beds. Would like to see your concrete idea too.
UA-cam wasn't the same without your videos. Glad you're back and healthy!
Thank you so much!
Keep it up brother, you’re doing great!!!!
Just discovered your channel. You two are my spirit animal! I love that Bespoke tool ( we have 3!) and BTE and chickens and raised beds! You need the shirt my husband has" I do what the voices in my wife's head tell me to do." I need a cattle panel!
I was thinking the same thing you said at the end, use them as forms and make them concrete. They’ve got some thin rebar out now, 2-3.5” thick would be fine.
Thanks for an informative and pleasant video. Just found your channel, and although my climate is super different - I can definitely put your knowledge sharing to work here.
You sold that box quickly for me. New fan my favorite channel now
I missed you entertainment!!! love you videos bud ive never had a complaint about how you did something because 100% of the time it just makes more sense!!!
Thank you so much!
Hey, I just realized I gave you just a half of the advice. In addition to painting the fence near herbs white, you should also add Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) to the paint so that it absorbs the UV radiation from the sun. Otherwise there is a high possibility that your plants will get hit with more reflected UV radiation in addition to one coming directly from the sun, which would be harmful to them. As a bonus you will get more heat and light radiated from the fence to the plants which could help in springs and autumns.
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Love you and Kim!👍🏼💜🥰
Glad you're feeling better. I live in NC ,zone 7 my wife's untreated raise bed has lasted for 6 years now. It is showing some rot in the corners so I will probably change it this year.
Thanks! That's good to know.
I use the Back to Eden method in my raised beds. I just got 15 yards of wood chips to top the beds off and am topping that with compost. I do it in the fall so everything works down by spring. It usually takes a year or two for it to really start working well, the first planting year my wife was ready to kill me! (Her name is also Kim) The pumpkins took over the backyard, the tomatoes took over the side garden, and we just had so much growth! I would pick Cherokee Purple tomatoes and eat them as I mowed the lawn...where I could mow anyway. good things come to those who wait.
Awesome video and projects. It seems like we all have too many projects and not enough time to do them. We need to garden as much as we can and not depend on the grocery stores as much.
These are great videos. I was wondering about the cement boards. I had no idea I could use a box cutter.
@ 20 min great idea to pour cement forms for raised beds. those wonder board ones are neat too
Lovely Bald eagle :) A friend of mine was a falconer, and used to train his Falcons to hunt crows. He's over the fields one day and lets his bird go at a crow, the crow took off and he watched as his falcon peeled away and then dove to the ground. He ran over only to find it had taken out a guys prized chicken, and the guy was not happy....so yeah, chickens might not be the food of choice, but when opportunity presents itself nature says thanks very much...lol
Oh no. I bet that was a fun conversation. 😂
Glad to hear you are doing better! I recently had shingles and definitely wasn’t fun! Love the channel and always look forward to your videos. Out of curiosity what is your other channel on UA-cam?
Thanks. Sorry to hear you had to go through that. We have a couple channels. One is a kid’s channel and my wife Kim also has a channel she is just getting started on.
"I recently had shingles and definitely wasn’t fun! " This is the adult form/variant of the same virus, Chickenpox, that children get.
some people use linseed oil for a wood preservative that is not toxic to plants
Where are you located? I am really getting a lot out of your videos. Thank you sooo much for sharing all of your knowledge.
One additional thing I do to my raised garden beds is add a layer or ribbed underlayment (made to go beneath vinyl plank floors) to the inside walls of the beds. They are non-toxic, non-leaching and they prevent soil and water from resting up against the wood. Because it’s ribbed, it also allows air to travel between the plastic and the wood ensuring the wood never stays soaked. I’ve only had them for roughly 3 years but my untreated pine is showing no signs of rotting.
Here is the product from Home Depot: DMX 1-STEP 100 sq. ft. 3.6 ft. x 29 ft. x 5/.32 in. Underlayment for Vinyl Planks, Laminate and Engineered Hardwood Floors
Your definition of ribbed is interesting. I call this dimpled, but still a good idea.
What a great idea! Thank you!
Dude, so many good vids!
Thanks!
Thanks for the video😁 Jamie wants a garden like what you guys have out front. So looks like I got a new project in my future😁👍 Have a great weekend 🚜💨💡
Good luck with that Mitch. 😁 Thanks, you too!
I like your Idea for a form to make concrete raised beds. Ill have to work on that idea. 🤓
Thanks. Here's a quick tip from a boatbuilder (me) about untreated lumber. Paint the ends before you assemble. 75% of the moisture in a board gets in through the endgrain... so paint or seal just the endgrain. It'll add an extra year or two to the lumber's life. If you are really worried about that little bit of paint leaching into the soil, then use a food grade clear coat, like they use on cutting boards. Personally, I would just use latex house paint and not worry about that tiny amount of paint on the ends.
Thanks!
I think I'll just use wood glue, should seal up the ends and potentially add strength to the connections too
Glad your feeling better my friend
Thank you!
Not sure if you remember but I was using Hardie backer board at the same time you made yours. I now have 20 gardens and they are incredible. I was planning on doing a video highlighting them in the next week or so. I used Hardiebacker board, not durock like you, and I painted mine, so not exactly apples to apples. I don't get many comments so I came to your site to see what people would say. I'm glad you did this because I can't find anyone else who has tried. So far, it's a win.
I do remember. That's great. I've had some people comment that they did something similar many years ago and they are still holding up fine so that's good to know.
So is there anything to worry about fly ash and vegetables ? I've been inspired to make raise garden beds 5x2.5x3 ft high.. wanting to do wicker beds with this medium any tips or advice to a novice?
@@jahzlovesouljah I can tell you this. Using the backer board is incredible. I'm outside right now refilling the beds and they are as perfect as the day I built them. They are working out amazingly
@@TheSHOP411 awesome 👍 I love your name I'm currently trying to study homesteading too starting with what I have.. thanks for the reply
@@jahzlovesouljah I believe the majority of channels on UA-cam that promote homesteading are people who are figuring it out as they go. Even some of the biggest homesteading channels are figuring it out. I have a lot of background but I learn something new everyday. UA-cam has so much to offer, just be careful because not all of the info out there is right. I'm a big proponent or getting all the knowledge that you can and apply what works for you. A lot of times , just having the basic fundamentals is all you need. It's definitely not a one size fits all thing. Take care and see you around.
If you put some foundation drainage mat between the soil and the wood planter walls, you may be able to reduce the rot by allowing water a drainage space to move away.
🍀🍀🍀🍀 your videos are awesome - well done - your humour is a breath of fresh air
To help stop the bowing out of the backer board containers you could use some heavy wire across the middle like you would in a Gabion basket connecting the sides together.
Really love the updates on these garden beds. I came on to look at concrete boards ones you made and see if it would work and you reminded me probably not because you are 9 I am 6b
HM I feel for you man! I had the "pox" when I was 24 and that first week was one of the worst weeks of my life. Glad to see you back with a Vid.
Yes it’s no bueno. Thanks!
That’s a Barebones Hori hori. It’s an excellent tool for the garden, I agree.
Poor sister..... the guinea, the raised beds what else lol what a lucky sis!
Glad you’re feeling better! 👋🏻
Thank you so much!
Need more haxman in my life!
Thank you!
I am curious about your thinking on how wood logs would break down and not be a problem since the wood chips were and stunted plant growth? Plant growth is often related to nitrogen available in the soil from decayed organic matter, where as fruit production if often related to the potassium available in the soil. You can tell a bit about these relationships from most fertilizer bags with the numbers showing to indicate what will be provided by 3 fertilizer components.
Great video buddy
Thanks for the update! Any update on how the whiskey barrel string lights are holding up? I plan to copy what you did this spring for our patio
I’m going to do an update on that in a couple weeks. Thanks!
I built an outdoor BBQ and an outdoor bar out of cement board! Used 2x4s for the frame. Just had the idea for this and found your videos!
I appreciate your videos. Thanks for making them. I think I might try to make the burn barrel pizza oven. 👍
Hi, it's the most simple way to construct Green beds, I'm going to create mine, thanks
Good video enjoyed it thx for sharing and the info Be safe God Bless
Thanks! You as well
Thank you
What did you use for the perimeter fencing? I have a large(ish) property and am looking for solutions for the privacy issue. Also love your videos. I'm in Canada yet most of your applications are relevant here..Thanks
You two should try the cattle panels for your cucumbers also. It makes for easy pickins.
Ooohh yeah great idea
My cucumbers "found" mine, last year, and I'm glad they did. It did make finding/picking MUCH easier!
hey Haxman tx for the video, for any issues with your skin from the chicken pox you can put pure high quality vitamin e oil on any areas that may have had scarring. vitamin e oil from natural food store that is high quality, it will be thick, and a little sticky, so maybe apply at night. rub it in small dab gently in circular motion; and definitely increase your vitamin C intake, as vitamin C assists in the production of collagen and helps to prevent inflammation, in skin and throughout your body. an intake of fresh fruits and vegetables will help skin to heal faster along with plenty of drinking water. oh yeah, thanks for your videos, watched a bunch today and now have to get cracking on these raised beds for my spouse, she's been asking for a while. be well!
I feel your pain regarding neighbors with barking dogs.
Heugal method is good as long as the wood you use is basically insect or bad insect free. We tried it in a small section grew radish and everyone of them were spoiled. The 3’ high raised gardens are perfect if you have a bad back and luv to garden.
i built mine with concrete cinder blocks, 14 of them, 3 width 4 of them length wise, very inexpensive and easy to get into for beginners, takes 10 1 sq ft bags of top soil.
Great video! It's always great seeing what you're up to. My wife's been asking me to make some garden beds for her and this gives me some great ideas.
Thank you so much!
That's right- chips leach nitrogen. If they are not already composted they also get hot and can cook the seedlings. You can add Nitrogen by mixing in grass clippings. They have a lot of N2 in them.
I got chicken pox when I was 25. I'm almost 45 now and had the flu and various ailments. Chicken pox was by far the worst. It felt like I had the flu for almost a month. Glad you're better!
Is the cement holding heat more then the wood?
Sand Gnat's ,.. try the Cling free sheet's about # 2-3 on side's & back on neck , we have the famous "No see em' Pinon Tree kind
What gauge metal were the roofing panels that you used?
Haxman, what kind of knife (brand/model) is that you were using to cut around the base of the big ornament?
Hey Haxman, I got a great hack for ya. Cut the top off a 2 litre plastic bottle, slip it over the 4"x4" then hit it with a heat gun to shrink it on the ground end of the leg. Great recycle hack. Plus you can do the same thing to the top of the leg with the top of the bottle. It makes a good holder for the garden tools when you're working. You're so good with sharing hacks I felt I owed you one. 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Wouldn't rainwater run down your posts and trickle into the bottles, to be held against the posts? How do you seal the bottles to the posts so that they don't collect water?
I transport 16' cattle panels on top of my mini van using an extension ladder ties to the luggage rack to support the panels.
Where there’s a will there’s a way. 👍
