Stephen King himself says Pet Sematary is his most disturbing book. It’s good. I just finished The Shining and I loved it. The Kubrick movie takes some liberties with the story, so I treat the book and the movie as two different stories.

I feel like The Shining or Pet Sematary are both great introductions to Stephen King. Also, if you enjoy short story collections, Night Shift is wonderful. 😊😊

My first Stephen King book was the summer before 8th grade. We were at Girl Scout Camp and everybody was giggling over a book called Stephen King's IT (there is cursing and private parts, and we were all naive). I read that 1100+ sucker in three days, under the covers with a flashlight, while eating, you get the picture. It remains my favorite, and you NEED to read it at some point! However, for October, I would go with Pet Semetary. It spooked me out more than the Shining or IT.

Pet Sematary is scary in how it addresses hard emotional topics, but I didn’t find myself super spooked by it (still think it’s an amazing book). The Shining is my favorite King book and I started with that too, other than that I’d recommend Misery!

When I started reading King I was in high School and my first book was Misery. I’ve read quite a few of his books but not even close to all of them. There have been one I loved and ones I haven’t. I definitely suggest Misery, Dolores Claiborne, Rose Madder, The Green Mile, and The Outsider....those were some of my absolute favorites.

I actually plan to read Dracula too soon, but only after I read Carmilla. Carmilla is actually the vampire story that inspired Dracula and has a woman vampire at the centre of the story, which I don't see often with vampire books not that I've read many. I am basically going to read it when it arrives because I really feel like a book like this at the moment. Also, I don't really read Stephen King, but I personally had started with Carrie. I really liked this because (none of the films I've seen has done the book any justice) it was done in a mix media format through interviews and documentaries about this event that was very impossible, and alongside it you also get Carrie's perspective. And it was just handled in this really interesting way that made the book give a lasting impression. If I do read more books of his, which is a pretty big if, I would probably go for either The Shining (because I was very unimpressed with the film and think it will be better as a book) or Pet Semetery (because I hear it is about grief and I like books about grief).

My mom was a huge Stephen King fan and when I was a teenager she wanted me to love his books as much as she did. I had thought it would be too scary at the time, so she had me 'dip my toes in the water' as it were with Firestarter and then Carrie. I truly enjoyed them but was still put off by the possibility of being traumatized, so I didn't pick his books up again until recently and I am loving them. I recommend beginning with Firestarter (mom was right- and it is one of my favorite books of all time) or even 11/22/63 if you want to try his works but aren't looking to be frightened/disturbed.

By the way I loved this video and I loved the fact that you didn’t have the bell/ding sound effect in this video... the one that most people include for the like button. My tentative TBR is Wayward Witch by Zoraida Cordova, Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson, Mad Ship by Robin Hobb, The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, Skyhunter by Marie Liu, The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix, The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult, The Breath of A Whale by Leigh Calvez and The Journeys of Trees by Zach St. George. I'm a mood reader so this list is likely to change and there's many other books I want to hopefully get to in October as well. Best of luck with your TBR possibilities!

Misery was my first Stephen King, but it's more atmospheric for winter. Pet Semetary remains my favorite because it was more psychological about how we process loss, grief, and what we would do to overcome it. If you like audiobooks, Michael C. Hall (Dexter) narrated it and he did an incredible job.

I have read most of King's works. In my opinion you could really start anywhere. The Shining is an excellent read. I would just give the caveat that the movie and the book are somewhat different. Kubrick took liberties. We all know that about movies though. I would suggest if you read The shining that you read the sequel Doctor Sleep. It is quite excellent as well. I have several of your choices on my TBR this month as well. I do hope you do a vlog for The Shining.

Stephen King info: I am 85 pages into 'Salem's Lot now and I'm loving it! The Shining is really good, though it may be a little slow for some. I also suggest checking out Night Shift as most people say it's his best short story collection. I really liked The compilation called The Bachman Books which have 4 of his 5 books written under his pen name, just be warned the first one (Rage) while incredibly good is also about a kid that takes his class hostage. Two other really good novellas by him are Apt Pupil and The Body. And you can find them together in Different Seasons. I have not read Pet Sematary yet, so I have no opinion on it. I'd say start where ever you want, but try out all of his different lengths because he shines differently in shorter and longer works.

I know this is an old video but I highly recommend Salem's Lot by King esp since you like vampire stories.

Stephen king is my favorite Author! Its fine to start with The Shining I actually may pick up Doctor Sleep which is the follow up to The Shining. I also have City of Ghosts & Frankenstein on my TBR.
My TBR is insane this month too well over 10,000 pages. 😂
    Well back to reading.
