Fun fact - the Wacky Races NES main theme is actually the opening theme from the Japanese dub of Wacky Races. The Panasonic 3DO Wacky Races "game" also used it and that's how I uncovered the theme's origin.
Hm, I was sure that show (and Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines) were more popular - I remember it being on pretty heavy rotation on Cartoon Network over here. Also, would love to see a hidden gems video on Rockin' Kats - a really amazing game that I hardly see anyone mention. Back in the days of Famiclones and buying pirated games on street markets with no idea what's inside, that was definitely one of my luckier pulls.
I remember seeing this in a game magazine as a kid. Found it kinda odd that it's 1) Not a racing game, and 2) you technically played as the villain. Or I guess the villain's sidekick and you're blowing up the good guys.
4:13 The homing pigeon thing is a ref to the old Dastardly and Muttley In Their Flying Machines cartoon, aka Stop That Pigeon! Nice touch, that. What lunatic thought that WW1 was a good backdrop setting for a kids' cartoon remains a mystery, though.
Wacky Races got a game because it's huge in Japan, especially Muttley. The opening theme of the game is the same theme song used in Japan! I guess they never bothered to change it.
I've been playing this game alot! And recently introduced a friend of mine to it. We swapped the controller and played it one evening and had a real blast/roar (depending on our current power-up)! I haven't seen many people talk about this game tho, glad to see you know whats up! Thanks for yet another brilliant video! Send those great jokes of yours flying my way, and keep up the awesome work!
Headed downstairs as we speak to throw some sticks. I don’t imagine Scott’s gonna like how you suggested I pick games but you know much more about NES than I do so
I loved the show as a kid and while I would have loved a racing game based off the show, I can't imagine they would have made a good one so I'll settle for this
The float mechanic and swimming/underwater bark...hell pretty much everything I see here is almost exactly like tiny toons for NES. Even the level design looks similar especially underwater and desert. Did atlas make tiny toons 1?
If I learned anything from this video, it’s that I now know what show that cartoon dog meme comes from! 😝 Also, the fact that _Wacky Races_ game isn’t even a RACE GAME seems like a huge violation.
@@BigOleWords Hannah Barbera also had two characters called The Dread Baron and Mumbly who are really similar to Dick Dastardly and Muttley. I think HB didn't 100% own Wacky Races, so they might've created these nearly identical characters to work around legal issues or something. But HB also made a million of their own ripoffs of Scooby Doo, so maybe they were just doing that again with these two characters. (When I was a kid I didn't realize they were different characters and just thought that Dick Dastardly had been renamed so he wouldn't have the name "Dick".)
Ah yes, Wacky Races....a game I really wish i hadn't traded a few years ago. Oh well, at least it had a deteriorating label. Good game....great review. Who in the hell was the target audience!?!

@@BigOleWords Perhaps even the animation of a much larger tail helps to improve the feeling. That's what's so cool about Nintendo AAA (if we can even use this description) games. They really want every mechanic to feel natural, to the point you don't even notice them.
Boy oh boy do I remember this game from back in the day. Played the hell out of it on my Slavic famiclone, never got too far because of a severe lack of skill. Really dig that trademark Atlus music, some of it I could even imagine playing in an early SMT game. Quite a few of the enemies really freaked me out for whatever reason (the chess pieces and the mummies in particular), generally tend to get some unintentionally creepy vibes from cutesey Japanese character designs.
I love this game! I only played it after discovering there was a rom. I was always into the cartoon series as a kid so much fun to watch but always felt bad dastardly never got a win!
I actually own this one. Found it for like 3 bucks in the late 90's. I played through it. After a while, you sorta adjust to how shitty it is. It sure wasn't the worst thing I've played, though, that's for sure.

tbh i think the game would've been better as a racing game instead of a platformer where you use power-ups to throw out on the road or at other cars or use for yourself (but then again its the nes maybe that would be way too much for the system to handle)

Not many games let you play as the villain's sidekick character.
Y’know I can’t think of any others!
I played Wacky Races pretty good game. No racing at all takes place in the game, but I know it's based on the TV show.
