I have learned a lot from your discourse and thank you for sharing your research. It wasn't until COVID year 1 that I found out about all the bourbon content on UA-cam and listening has helped me a whole lot in building a collection. I hosted a bourbon tasting in 2011 to honor my father who passed that year as a way to share his memory with friends. He was a scotch guy more than he was bourbon, but he was also uniquely American. I have enjoyed bourbon as far back as 1974, but was unaware of how much the industry had grown as I was focused on my kids and my career. I have hosted 5 bourbon tastings using my own set of rules- bourbons that friends would not typically find in a bar and include 4 unopened bourbons along with beverages for people not wishing to drink alchohol along with other alcohols for those who wish to have no bourbon. My 1st tasting, the favorite was Eagle Rare. At a subsequent tasting a friend brought along an unopened bottle of Pappy's and I was not impressed. Turns out I enjoy a little rye in my mashbill, I find my highest level of enjoyment with rye at a level

Yea drew we feel you. Been in the bourbon game 4+ years and I have been on a 3 or 4 month drought. Even when hunting closer to secondary its very difficult to find anything exciting in 2022. Feels like you need to win a lottery to get a ecbp, or bookers, know creek limited. I feel worst for newer people iv talked to spending months to a year hunting a Buffalo trace or eagle rare basic bottle and still haven't tried them.

Haha, I had the ER and BT bug when I started (both widely available in NY). Nothing special. I mean the ER is solid, very balanced w lots of oak but doesn't come anywhere near the hype. And I'd take EC small b over BT all day. They used to be priced closely in the high $20's but now BT is closer to $40. The BT hype of late is working.

I think it just depends where you live, right? ECBP is super easy to find for me. I bet you have plenty of stuff where you are that I never see on a shelf. We just have to ultimately have an appreciation for what we can get. I don’t want the game and the hunt to be over and above just enjoying good whisky. Whether it is a $20 shelfer or a $200 unicorn. Otherwise you’re just trying to feed the obsession of hunting. At the end of the day, it’s JUST a drink.

I’ve never done it, but I get why people buy metal detectors. The thrill of the hunt is real. I was embarrassingly happy last month when I stumbled into a store and found an EHT single barrel and barrel proof just sitting there at retail (required here in Oregon). My fav part of your channel is when you cover the lineage and history of what you’re drinking. I also like the peeks behind the curtain at your personal life, BTS, etc. Cheers - looking forward to more.

Had my first taste of Tennessee whiskey in 76 to celebrate our nation's birthday. I have been a Tennessee squire since 81 but I always preferred Wild Turkey and Maker's Mark. People chase whiskey nowadays but be patient and it will come and just enjoy the splendid variety that we have today.. There is no such thing as missing out unless you live in Asia.

Big into introducing new people to American whiskey and dipping into some rums. Just toured a distillery in Brava, Cape Verde (Africa), tasted some 1yr, 7yr and 18yr Grog-rum. I just like talking to more people. Didn't know I was so talkative until, I got into whiskey. Whiskey alone can get tiring at times.

I believe you’ve nailed this one. Like many here got in about 3/4 years ago. Hunting used to be fun but as mentioned either you have to know someone on the inside or find a needle in a haystack. With gas prices as high as they are getting lucky is getting pretty costly. Since there’s only 5-10 bottles I’d absolutely would like to have for a reasonable non-secondary price and that being virtually impossible I’m checking out a little on the bourbon game. I’ve found this also includes watching as much whiskey tube as I used. Seems pointless to listen to a review about a bottle I’ll never try. Is what it is, I ain’t mad just bummed.

I never made a conscious decision to pivot from bourbon collector to bourbon consumer, but that's where I'm at. I'm not interested in standing in line in the rain, snow, or dark of night, not going to drop a mortgage payment on a bottle, and not going to hit every honey hole in all 50 states trying to find a unicorn. It's just not worth it. I sat on my front porch for the first time this year and had a few glasses of Maker's cask strength and all was right in the world. It's tougher for a Whiskey Tuber like Drew P to constantly scratch the itch for new and rare stuff, but me? I'm cool. Bottoms up!

I’ve turned to finding exceptional store picks. I just got a phenomenal Old Forester SBBP store pick. I only got it bc I support the store. It’s probably the best whiskey I’ve purchased. That includes BT. It was worth every penny of the $100. I’d rather do that then pay $300 for ETL.
I really enjoy these types of videos you make! I prefer it to “Wild Turkey Review 2022”! 😂 Every whiskey tube channel has reviewed everything. The scene is stagnant.

I agree completely. The bourbon hobby is over for me. At least for now. Between higher prices, lower age statements and/or quality, and the incredible lack of availability its just not fun anymore. Glad i stocked up when the getting was good. I also expext wiskey tube to implode soon...

So I live in Alabama which is a controlled state they drop allocated whiskey once a month, they release a list of what they are dropping a week before, this month I was super stoked that they were bringing the Heaven Hill Heritage 17, they were only bringing it in 10 stores in the state, so the day before the allocated stuff drops as soon as I got off work I drove 2 hours to the Montgomery ABC store I got there at 3 PM in the afternoon only to find 7 other people already in line… 2 of them had been camping in that parking lot since tuesday(4 days prior) the case only had 3 bottles… I just drove back home realizing I’d never get my hands on a true unicorn, and had to settle with my bottle of eagle rare 10… so yea… I’m kind of bummed down with the bourbon world….

Agree totally with the state of bourbon. I think examples like Middle West / store picks is part of the exciting future of Bourbon. Some craft distilleries are doing very well and personally I think Peerless is on its way with their Single Barrels you can buy at the distillery. Little pricey but I’m impressed with Caleb & Corky’s focus and quality juice.
If the craft distilleries can build inventory and age their juice 4+ years, they will even be better.
Enjoy you being real, keep up the good work.

Drew...great video as usual. I too live in Alabama. A tightly controlled state where unicorns are rarely found in the wild. But to me that is the thrill of the hunt. Wandering into neighboring states and seeing what you can find on the shelf in an out of the way store. Sometimes you find gold, sometimes you just find something you don't find local to you. It's all about trying something new and tasting different juice. I don't even participate in the ABC lottery here. It's a ridiculous way to dole out what should be easily attainable. There is just too much other bourbon, scotch and whiskey to be tasted to fool with that nonsense. Keep it coming Drew. Love the perspective.

Great show Drew P. Middle West is not far from me and is definitely an under-rated distillery. The Pumpernickel Rye is unbelievable. Please keep up the Chatt Whiskey slander, the longer everyone else sleeps on them the better! The high malt stuff they're doing really hits for me and I don't understand how their whiskey can be so dark at under four years. Chattanooga Whiskey is the craft distillery that doesn't miss for me.

Nailed on the head. I love the hunt, but when you do find something your looking for the price gouging makes me keep my money in my pocket because I know better. Been branching out into scotch, rum, tequila and stocking up on my faves (Russell’s 10 and knob 12) before those prices skyrocket too. Hopefully riding out the storm will take care of this 2ndary market BS

This is why I keep a dozen specific bourbons that I will continue to keep on stock with a backup and then if I come across a Buffalo Trace product, I buy it. That’s it. If I buy and build a stupidly sized collection, I’ll never feel the collection is finished and I would never be satisfied.

This guy gets it! It's not about trying to build a infinite collection of bottles that will take you decades to drink. It's about keeping around some of your favorites, every so often stumbling across a surprise bottle, and not stressing out because you don't have every rare bottle you've been craving.

I’m currently into blind hunting in mom n’ pop liquor stores. It’s fun and sometimes I get into interesting discussions about bourbon with the liquor store owners or other customers in the store. I don’t find anything too amazing, maybe a discontinued bottle or something sorta old, nothing major nor dusty though. But I still really enjoy it.
I’m not into the craft distillers cause their stuff is too young so it lacks complexity. I don’t chase the latest releases from the big distillers either. Just hunt for older or obscure bottles, I feel like Indiana Jones hunting for ancient artifacts lol.
Starting to get into rum a bit too.

Cool vid. I've pondered a lot of this stuff as well (while too lazy to research it). Inner workings of supply/demand, pricing, etc. In terms of finding bargains is it accurate that until stores (mom and pop's) got automated/easier access to info (internet) they were in the dark on the value of limited releases and stuff aging on shelves? Is there some pricing tool/publication that has changed how retail operates? Too many fkng questions! 😁

You know things are getting tight when you get fired up to find pre 2022 Russells 10 yr. I’m lucky to live in KY and can hit a distillery every once in a while. Also, I am at the point that I know what I like and can pretty much find what I like at a good price. Also, the stores jacking the prices have really turned me off, ex: I got an ECBP A122 for $89, B522 at the same store $149. Nope, I’ll pass.

I'm feeling burned out by hunting bourbon too. I've always been a scotch drinking who dabbled in bourbon. And it was kind of fun chasing the hype with all of the bourbon channels that have come up over the past couple years. But especially over the past year, it feels like the payoff just isn't justifying the hunt. I've found some pretty cool stuff and I even won a lottery for a George T Stagg. And that's really good. But do I want to jump through those hoops again and buy x number of bottles for a chance to win XYZ? Not really. When you factor in driving around the city every couple days, constantly checking social media, plus the other stuff you buy, it just doesn't feel worth it. Especially when you realize that you don't like some of these bottles as much as something that you can find most on the shelf most of the time.
I will say, pro-move: Russell's store picks + just a little bit of GTS is {chef's kiss}, which I guess in a way is sort of Russell's 13-ish.

Seminary student huh, I always enjoyed talking about theology over a good drink. Maybe you should consider weaving a little bit of that in your videos.
I've been following Bible teacher and author Frank Viola. Although, more so in the last few months, since the release of his latest book called "Insurgence", but I've also read one of his first books several years ago with a book he released in 2008 called "Pagan Christianity?"
I'm probably in a place with "institutional church" that is similar to what sounds like you're in with Bourbon. I still love it, but find it exhausting.
Anyway, off on a rabbit trail here, but would be interesting to hear more of your thoughts on your theology, or maybe you dumped it all?
