I'm the same TBH I used to play when I was in High School in the library but that was OMG 15-ish years ago. :O But I mostly just like the lore, the books, making stuff and watching stuff being made for the game.
Just wanted to chime in as a member of this video’s target audience-someone who is (was!) vaguely aware of Warhammer but isn’t (wasn’t!) entirely sure what it entails-and tell you how much I appreciated this explanation. I feel like it strikes a really satisfying balance between being approachable and succinct and (for an outsider hahah) thorough: a quick but wholistic overview of the breadth of the franchise, hobby, and community. Thank you for making this!
I play Dungeons and Dragons -- but Warhammer made me fall in love with model painting. Mixing them can be magical. Nothing compares to the moment a party reaches the ritual chamber and instead of some crumby Lich -- you put down the Nagash Supreme Lord of the Undead model. Jaws drop. Faces palm. Pants fill. Roll initiative. Your fear tastes like gummie bears to Nagash.
Great explanation dude, for anyone new to this amazing hobby, my only advice is to try it! Have a look at what YOU like, paint the models you think look cool, read the lore that interests you and try and learn some new things through UA-cam! Good luck! Just remember, warhammer can get expensive fast, so don’t jump in at the deep end. There are so many aspects to this hobby. Maybe buy one model or just a squad to begin with. Good luck :)
What a great, eloquent explanation of all of this. I get a chuckle thinking about how this is made for people who don't know the game, but the main audience watching it is still probably the people who know all this stuff already and are just nodding along admiring how well it's been explained. 😆
That was a great introduction to those whom may be curious. I've been in the hobby for 35 years and still enjoyed this. Going to refer anyone who asks me about the hobby to this video.
Not gonna lie, your videos popped up on my feed a few weeks ago, and hooked me. I bought a few minis when I was a kid in the 90's but never played. But now I've got a source book for Age of Sigmar out for delivery today...
Ian, the best thing about your videos is how damn excited you are in the intro just before it fades to the music. You're practically shaking from joy, it's amazing. Never lose that passion!
I haven't done much with warhammer in around 18 years or so but I've just been addicted to listening to you discuss various aspects of the 40k history.
Got back into the hobby 2 years ago, best decision I've ever made. I've made new friends and made old friendships stronger. You can enjoy it quietly in your office, painting a model or reading rules. Or you can meet up with friends, grab some beers, and get hammered playing 'hammer. Best hobby ever.
This is a good channel that i just discover, ive always been a warhammer fan, had a space wolfs army and a dwarfs army, loved space wolfs books and the gotrek and felix series. Keep up the good work in the channel

"Is it like Warcraft?" Well more the other way around, several Blizzard veterans have been quite open about taking "inspiration" from Games Workshop back in the early days of the company.
I was told blizzard was originally hired to make a Warhammer game then backed out and made warcraft and StarCraft which were built from the work on Warhammer games they had been brewing for the deal with games workshop
@@udontseethetruth Blizzard weren't the ones to back out, from what I remember. GW actually pulled the plug. Its the reason that Zerg, Protoss and Terrans resemble Tyranids, Eldar and Space Marines so much.
Well done packing this much information into a 10-minute video! Definitely only the broadest overview, but then again, it’s a good intro to the “What is Warhammer?” question. Diving in deeper would certainly call for much longer videos.
Hi mate. Thanks for this awesome intro. I live in Amsterdam and near my house I always saw this Warhammer store and i wondered what was this all about. Now I get it... right now my hobby is Mechanical custom keyboards but once I buy a new house i will have space to start with the Warhammer models. I think painting will help me relax... Probably will not be the doing the playing time.
Smart move to not answer how expensive the hobby is. Let them find that out when they are deeper in the hobby and will hesitate more about backing out. Jokes aside, love the video. Will probably use it if any of my friends gets interested in warhammer since i am terrible at explaining things.
Great videos, thanks! I was a Rogue Trader in the late 80s and played up to Necromunda but then drifted away. I’m now at a point where my kids have taken an interest so I’m dusting off what models I have and getting back into 40K with them. Your videos have really got me hooked and I’m slowly piecing a couple of small armies back together. Naturally I have lots of questions and was wondering if you could recommend a/some forums. Perhaps as a short video? It would be great to know where best to ask dumb questions!
As a world of warcraft, witcher, star wars and lord of the rings fan, i've been wondering a lot about what is warhammer and it's universe setup.. this being a 2 years old video as it is, is incredible how well explained and detailed is.. im leaving this with a great feeling and also a huge hype about warhammer hahah maybe you created a new fan of this.. Thanks!
I first discovered Warhammer at my friend's through PC games back in the mid-'90s. Neither of us was aware of the existence of any miniatures nor tabletop wargaming aspects thereof at the time. I first learnt of this side of the franchise just like 15 years ago by a lucky accident when I stumbled upon one documentary about this craft-hobby while randomly switching TV channels. I didn't catch the beginning and for a few more years thereafter I was still not aware of the fact that the wargame came first. :-) Also, my then-reaction was, "Why do the miniatures NOT come already finished (assembled and painted) from the factory? This therefore must be a very niche hobby since the company likely misses out on many potential customers who would otherwise be interested in the collecting and the wargame". :-D :-D Please don't kill me!! :-)
Personally, I'm more interested and intrigued by the books/novels aspect more than the other stuff (maybe also add the leggings lol), and that's how I stumbled upon your channel. Quality content, and a voice to match the excitement of it all. Subscribed!
I wish I'd found this video first when I asked myself "What the hell is Warhammer 40K exactly?". That being said - if anyone ever asks me what it is or where to start - I'm sending them THIS video. SUPER HELPFUL. Thank you so much.
Came here because I heard about Rogue Trader (the videogame), and since I'm a huge fan of CRPGs, I felt like playing it, but it didn't feel right not having any previous knowledge on the universe. I don't really have any interest in the actual tabletop game or the crafts part of it, but the lore sounds super interesting (and I've always wanted to try a bunch of the videogames). Just picked up the Horus Rising e-book, heard its a good place to start!
My favourite fun fact is that Warcraft/Starcraft started out as a video game version of Fantasy/40k but Blizzard wanted more creativity and GW was like bruh we are telling a story you can't be messing it up so they decided to go different directions
The initial plan was that 'Warcraft' would be a series of games in disparate settings - medieval fantasy, modern, future, post apocalyptic, etc. (Think sorta like Total War? Except those are mostly historical, but general idea - same engine, different settings). They wanted, at least casually, to get a license for WHFB as one of their first in the series, but Games Workshop wasn't interested. In the end they made a bit of a copyright friendly version, though things diverged quite quickly from there. Starcraft is really similar only in that it's a sci-fi game following a fantasy game. There aren't really shared factions between the two - even the humans have a rather different aesthetic. The Zerg and Tyranids are kinda similar *now*, but this was back in the day of 2nd edition tyranids, which... do not look like that, and it's more that they both have a lot of xenomorph in them.
Bro thank you. I never played war hammer before. I just seen the new warhammer 40k space marine 2 trailer and thought it look epic but when I search up warhammer and was mad confuse at what I was seeing cause it had so many different type of games
Came across Warhammer 40K via the Spacemarines Game on PS3 and after reading about, I think I have become more interested in the lore via books and videogames.
Cool! Have u read many W40k books recently? I've mainly been reading Eisenhorn trilogy, Lexicanum lore, and listening to a W40k lore podcast (Adeptus Ridiculous).
Oh wow! Now I know what I’ve been up to for the past 30 years. Quite silly really. Probably should take up golf like a proper adult. Do I have to paint the clubs? Does the golf course provide the terrain, or do I have to bring my own?
As a Magic the Gathering player, I know of Warhammer, but I don't know a thing about how it's actually played. I've just seen people at wargame tables measuring out distances with rulers.
@ArbitorIan Thank you for this! I feel you made this video just for me. I'm leaning more towards the PC gaming side of the franchise. Can you (or anybody for that matter) explain the differences in the computer game side of Warhammer? Do you know of a video explaining that part specifically? There are just so many out there and I want to get into the franchise but I'm really overwhelmed byu how much content there is to dive into.
5:30 In addition to the LOTR miniatures Games Workshop has made a surprising amount of games of all varieties (they made a Doctor Who board game!)... though they're niche enough that most people's reaction to their existence is 'hey I didn't know GW made that', and then forgetting about them again. Like the most notable is probably Dark Future (a post apocalyptic car-combat game), because it had a video game come out on Steam within the past decade.
As a non-crafter/painter I've only really perked up at the thought of the really fun seeming, epicly scaled, tabletop fights. This is not to knock anyone who loves the crafting and painting, but like, is there a way to get into this hobby that doesn't require that? Maybe I just need to find someone offloading old minis and run at it that way, lol.
i don't have a very big budget, so buying the models can be very complicated. So, i 3d print them. But i would like to play games with them, but since they don't come with their little information paper i don't know how good they are. So i was wondering if there was some sort of website where i could find what their stats are, and also if i could play with them at events or competitions with other people?
I am the lore/craft/painting side of the hobby. I got back into 40k because some friends did, and we haven't played a game yet. It's been over 6 months, i have like 1000 points of Necrons and AdMech each.
I had some vague knowledge about Warhammer, but I never expected it to be so massive, and its lore so big and rich. I'm really into the lore of the fantasy settings I enjoy, so I guess I might buy some of the novels to better get to know it all better. do you have any videos in your channel about the novels?
I am a 3D modeler, and would love to start a collectibles of Warhammer. But I don't know where to start whose who to model? are there specific names of character i should follow in a certain universe or i can create my own monsters on that universe?
4:39 Tolkien's world is pretty much the definition/archetype of high fantasy. High fantasy just means it's set in a world that is independent of ours. These days people seem to associate the term with the prevalence and flashiness of magic, but that's not what it's about.
About the D&D part - there are actually quite a few Warhammer tabletop RPGs, both fantasy, Age of Sigmar and 40k. To be honest, I know plenty of people that have been introduced to the roleplaying hobby via one of them...
If you are looking for lore than no. If you want to know where it comes from. Yes I know I'm late but I kinda wanted this question answered when I first got here.
I personally like the lore and the gameplay i haven't painted any of my models fully yet im still pretty new to warhammer found this video while trying to look for a video that explains the math with rolls etc
I was always mostly interested into Warhammer RPG. When other RPG people asked me what it is my summary answer was/is: "Imagine a world so overrun by dark and evil factions, if they would unite, they would wipe out the remaining 'good' guys in a very short time. Such a dark, grim world makes a wonderful world for adventure and RPG with the threatening atmosphere as there is always something going on at every corner. And all the fighting and darkness left its mark on the 'good' guys which are just a bit less dark and evil then the monsters they fight. Not a world you want to live in but GREAT for adventure. Not those tidy, neat and clean US fantasy worlds of D&D&Co which remind me more of a Disneyland with good areas and the bad ones, petty much like modern US in a fantasy environment. ;p" Or the VERY short reply: "Imagine LOTR on steroids and crack."
I was recommended the Horus Heresy on audible, and the sample sounds good. I am a bit of a completionist tho but there are alot of books in the series. Does anyone know the best place to start to get the full story?
If you're just starting the Heresy series, then read at least the first five books in order, starting with Horus Rising. But if you're just starting with 40k Lore, the Heresy isn't the best starting point. It works way better as a prequel once you know 40k pretty well - there are loads of callbacks, etc
I saw it today at the hobby store, and they had so much stuff. They had this one thing with 30 blue guys, and a blue tank. I thought it was cool, so I wanted to see what it was.
Most difficult part of warhammer truly is picking a faction! I struggled so much from jumping between armies and spending so much money. The rule of cool doesn't work for people like me that think EVERY FACTION LOOKS COOL LOL. However, I found my heart in THOUSAND SONS I love the space wizards
Thanks for the video. But did you forget to mention all the RPG stuff related to Warhammer intentionally? I know most of it is "out of print" nowadays, but I have a lot of fun playing my Explorator in a Rogue Trader campaign. ;)
Thanks I'm New to the Warhammer world i watched some videos about lore and i love it, it's a bit difficult to find people because at my school and generally in Italy i don't think they know the game of war hammer. Because many of my friends thinks board games are slow and old.
I feel it's important to make the smallest of corrections. Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40,000 aren't in the literal same universe. By that I mean the planet that Age of Sigmar exists on isn't somewhere in the milky way galaxy of the 41st millennium (or even its distant past). Same ideas, same evil gods pulling strings, both have orks..... but they're different universes.
Some say the leggings are the most important part
Leggings shield your naked legs like the Emperor of Man shields the Imperium from the mutant, the heretic and the xenos.
In a world of confusing subjectivity this is the only objective truth.

Lmao
Buying Warhammer/40K miniatures, painting those miniatures and playing the tabletop game are 3 distinct but complimentary hobbies.
To be honest , I'm more interested in the lore and crafts aspects of Warhammer than the game itself.
Same. Love the lore and have read a ton of the novels but really not interested in playing the game.
I originally thought this too, but I play atleast 3-4 games of killteam every two weeks, so much better than full scale 40k

About the D&D part - there are actually quite a few Warhammer tabletop RPGs, both fantasy, Age of Sigmar and 40k. To be honest, I know plenty of people that have been introduced to the roleplaying hobby via one of them...
awesome!
what if i just searched up "what is warhammer" and this video popped up? do i stick around? 😂
If you are looking for lore than no. If you want to know where it comes from. Yes
I know I'm late but I kinda wanted this question answered when I first got here.
I personally like the lore and the gameplay i haven't painted any of my models fully yet im still pretty new to warhammer found this video while trying to look for a video that explains the math with rolls etc
I am building a pc and plan to play the game when it's finished but also want involved in the table top game as well
I was always mostly interested into Warhammer RPG. When other RPG people asked me what it is my summary answer was/is:
"Imagine a world so overrun by dark and evil factions, if they would unite, they would wipe out the remaining 'good' guys in a very short time.
Not those tidy, neat and clean US fantasy worlds of D&D&Co which remind me more of a Disneyland with good areas and the bad ones, petty much like modern US in a fantasy environment. ;p"
Or the VERY short reply: "Imagine LOTR on steroids and crack."
Fantastic breakdown! great video!
Newcomer here. Thank you for the video. Which novel(s) do you recommend to start with ?
I was recommended the Horus Heresy on audible, and the sample sounds good.
I am a bit of a completionist tho but there are alot of books in the series.
Does anyone know the best place to start to get the full story?
If you're just starting the Heresy series, then read at least the first five books in order, starting with Horus Rising. But if you're just starting with 40k Lore, the Heresy isn't the best starting point. It works way better as a prequel once you know 40k pretty well - there are loads of callbacks, etc
Oooo nice new camera-work. I like it!
My sons sent me. I’m here for the quick introduction. 😂👍
I saw it today at the hobby store, and they had so much stuff. They had this one thing with 30 blue guys, and a blue tank. I thought it was cool, so I wanted to see what it was.
I clicked on this video to understand more about Warhammer games, because there is a shit ton of them, but now I feel I entered a rabbit hole...
But luckily I find some videos like your that helps a lot thanks man ❤
I feel it's important to make the smallest of corrections.
Great video! Thanks for the introduction.
i think you miss new back to clasick warhammer fanatsy
the old world;
i check it was aledy annoucnment 4:30
The video I needed, and suddenly, poom, you post it.
