How to Hang Wallpaper - Beginners Guide to Wallpapering

  • I'm wallpapering a wall after stripping the old paper and decorating the room. It's best to completely decorate a room before wallpaper, rather than after. This way, you keep sharp crisp lines, and you don't run the risk of getting paint on the paper.
    Usually, if the wall has no returns or corners to deal with, find the centre of the wall, and start your papering there.
    If the paper has no pattern, or you're using lining paper, it is not important where you start, but always keep the paper plumb (level).

    Iv'e never pasted the wall in my life. Always pasted the paper - even with paste the wall paper. Couldn't get on with a knife cut either, I still use scissors. Each to his own. Good video though.

    Cracking job I especially like the tip painting stripes on the wall first.

    At first I thought you hung the last strip (closest to the window) 'miss-aligned'. I could not understand how you couldn't see the pattern doesn't match up with that piece?
    BUT THEN...
    Looking closer at the baseboard I could see the baseboard turns inward. Weird though why there would be a small section of wall set back from the larger main wall. 🤷‍♀
    Also curious why you picked the 'darker' paint color when the paper is predominantly gold color? Nice idea but, if the seams do separate, you will have a dark blue line running down the wall through the gold color. 😉

    Doesn't the strip off the extra roll by the window not match up pattern wise? Is it just my eyes?

    Good work! I absolutely hate wall paper, some are easier than others, some seem to stretch loads when they get the adhesive on. It’s a fine art, and one I avoid 😃

    What’s up with the pattern at the join with the last piece on the right?

      He's totally messed up and totally dropped the pattern match. , AND at the time didn't even notice. Some people have better expertise at you-tubing rather than doing the actual job. As well as this embarrassing mistake, it's also pointless offering paper up from the roll and cutting the length at the bottom prior to actually hanging it. Rather than mess about wasting time doing that double moving , just paste the wall then feed the paper off of the roll, leaving the roll in situ and then trim at the bottom as you finish the actual hanging. This also negates the need to mark the back of the paper with a 'T' when hanging 'wall' pasted papers to ensure you do not have the paper upside down, like you could possibly have in a 'paper pasted' situation when you cut multiples prior to commencing pasting.

      If you look closely you can see its not a flat wall there, its a bit of a corner. You can tell when he’s talking about his trip to get more paper before he does that last strip. It just coincidentally looks like he has done it by accident

      There is a return on the right side, with the camera angle it looks like dodgy pattern matching 😄

    • @JBTV
      @JBTV  5 місяців тому +1

      I'm sorry you feel so upset with my wallpaper hanging. There was no pattern match mistake. There is actually a return to the right hand side of the wall, this is making the pattern match look wrong. Thanks for the 'take straight from the roll' feedback though 👍

    Can I ask what to do with flakey builder’s (non vinyl) emulsion that my old wallpaper has torn from the wall when stripping? I’m repapering. Should I prep with dilute pva after sanding? Must I cross line? Thank you

    • @JBTV
      @JBTV  5 місяців тому

      Scraping as much paint off as possible and then applying pva is a good idea

    Sorry mate, but are you a professional decorator? Please tell me you didn’t just cut round that socket and not unscrew it from the wall.

  • @ningis21
    @ningis21 11 місяців тому

    Also make sure your paper is from the same batch ....with the same batch / print number and you buy enough to do the job in hand....and work from light (window) to dark....and plumb up prior to starting near the window...,,,and if only doing one wall the cuts on your paper are even (same size) at both sides of the room,,,,,, also with some papers with a picture on them you need to plumb from the middle of the wall. With a large pattern you should ensure that you do not cut at the top of the print ...if your ceiling is out ...it will look horrible...cut it about half way...less noticeable.....But, hey....nice job and he isn't a professional decorator..... so just goes to show you.... have a go folks...

      If you are dong an accent wall you balance the appearance of the pattern, not the wallpaper widths, to the ends of the wall. I have never worked light to dark. What it the purpose of that please?

    • @ningis21
      @ningis21 5 місяців тому

      @@williams.porter6182 Hi...used to do it with embossed papers sometimes especially if the wall had dips and bumps...if the paper happens to overlap at any point because you started at the ligh source the minor overlaps could not be seen when painted as no shadow was created by edge of paper....especially from the door end of the room.....a very very rarely used tip ...of sorts... and yes pattern match as you suggest ,,,my point was to have as even a cut as possible at each end of the wall.
