    Loved the way you went about this, installing the pan, then the rear seal/cover, snugging everything then tightening. I have not personally done this so it was very informative to me. Seeing the "squeeze" of the rear cover/pan and the sealant was nice. I do live vicariously through your procedures and feel like I"m there. Thanks.

  • @johnaclark1

    Hey, Ray...one tip for ya. One of the holes in the flex plate is smaller than the rest. This allows you to install that one first, torque it down, and then put each of the others in and torque them down as you go. That way you only have to do it once. Picked that tip up from a transmission guy.

  • @midgoog2
    @midgoog2 2 місяці тому +2

    Ray, when doing the pan and rear seal try putting the rear seal on first to give more room to fit it over the crank then add sealant at the front and rear joints before fitting the pan. That's how it was done on the production line I worked on.
    Cheers Eric

    Question for you Ray, why do you not change the dogbone o-ring, replace the plastic dogbone with a new one or upgrade the dogbone whenever you have the rear main cover off? You replace the oil pickup o-ring whenever you have the oil pan off. You replace the cam cover whenever you have the front cover off so you don't get internal oil leaks. Why not the dogbone so you don't have internal oil leaks. Not all of them are so strapped for cash they can't afford a 12.00 oem part. I'm really curious as to why not.

    • @rjm7168
      @rjm7168 2 місяці тому

      A leaky dogbone is really a minor issue and they can be really hard to get out, especially with just e inches of space behind thd engine. You only really need to replace the dogbone if your cleaning the block. It's an I've hyped part.

    Ray I use to put black tape on my wobble socket' to keep them straight and not so loose to help get on the bolts

    Was doing a starter on a 2012 6.7 power stroke today and realized how much of a Nightmare it is compared to chevys 2 bolts and it falls and smacks you in the face. Gm always seem to do it simple and ford finds the most complex way possible to do things. Such as their amazing torque converter studs aswell.

    If this van was in HI. that cover and gaskets would have been 10 times the cost there. That's why they did the sealant. Everything comes in on the boat or plane.

    Classic example of a valid "while we are here" repair (O-ring on pickup tube).
    Water pump while replacing timing belt another example. The water pump is behind the belt.
    Seems like an O-ring should still work if not disturbed. Somebody did something wrong there.

    When installing the rear main cover, you set it in place over the crankshaft. Presumably with the gasket centered on the shaft.
    Why then pull the rear main cover down to the oil pan instead of pulling the oil pan UP to the rear main cover ?? Are you not ever so slightly pulling the rear main seal off center ? Pulling it down creates compression on the top and a looseness on the bottom of the gasket seal ????

    Hey Ray, G.M. fex plates have one converter hole that is smaller than the rest. If you install that bolt first and tighten, the remaining bolts can be installed and torqued.

    Dielect,,engine or other grease, doesn't matter, it is only there to make installation easier and damage free and to prevent damage on initial startup. Once running the actual lube will take its place and KEEP it running damage free.
    All dynamic seals will benefit from this prelube procedure.

    It's not the paint, happens to all colors. What happens is operators wipe oil sheen from metal after installation, from ding removal, ride in delivery racks, to leaning on vehicle to install other parts ie. Hoods, doors, all prior to alpo dip that removes oil before paint dept.
