    The proper way to drill tempered glass is to anneal it first, then drill it while it is no longer tempered, then temper it again. It cannot be drilled in its tempered state because it is the sheet-shaped equivalent of a Prince Rupert drop.

    @manheap12 NO! you cannot drill holes or cut tempered glass, WITH ANYTHING , i worked in a tempered glass factory , you start with annealed glass , cut it to size , cut your holes , then toughen it in the furnace , thats the only way to getting holes in tempered glass,

    NO i don't care what mrkopsho tells you. you can NOT drill glass once its been tempered.

    Thats right!If you need holes or hinge notches you have to do them before tempering it.

    No, the point is, once failure occurs, the ENTIRE sheet of glass will crack, instead of cracking just where the damage was made. And it does not shatter into sharp pieces, it just cracks. Hence the term SAFETY GLASS. And this was a demonstration of just that.

    @Metalann82 The bits do have sharp edges they are just chunks instead of shards reducing the chance on serious injury.

    I suspect once you break through the glass the effect is similar to Prince Rupert's Drop. My Dad used a steel rod, carborundum sand and water to slowly grind through old Japanese glass floats to make lamps,

    @mrkopsho no you can't. you can only drill before tempering. I worked in the art glass industry for 3 years and it just cant be done. They would give new guys tempered glass as a joke and tell them to cut it or drill it. Then everyone would stand around and watch and laugh.

    So; if I have an oven good glass with two holes already drilled in it; I can assume it's NOT TEMPERED. Is this correct?

      I think the holes were drilled and then the glass was tempered

    You can never drill tempered glass. I am a glass mechanic in the USA Maryland union. You must reheat and return it to plate drill, then temper again..ot just do it right the first time

      What about using high temps to 'drill' into it. Like friction drilling

  • @boost0brendo
    @boost0brendo 12 років тому +5

    WRONG
    You cannot cut or drill toughened. It must all be done before it gets tempered. Best you can hope for is to polish off about 50% of the thickness of the glass eg 6mm you could get away with 3mm from each edge and 12mm you could get away with 6mm off each edge. This does depend on quality of glass etc. Point is don't post about stuff when you have no idea what you're talking about because what you wrote is a straight up lie.

    so i was wondering...i found this thing called "ceramic on tempered glass" and this woodworking site but the people aren't replying to my e-mail...do yo9u know if i can sharpen a knife on it? it's 16,000 grid and is cheaper than silcon.

    What about sandblasting a hole?

    • @dominicknepper2082
      @dominicknepper2082 10 років тому +1

      Nope. Tempered glass can't be drilled or sand blasted. The surface tension on the glass is greater than it is in the core of the glass. As soon as you break the surface it shatters. It's strong, but brittle.

    You can not drill into tempered glass. I have work in the glass for 10 years doing shower doors and all that glass is tempered . We wish we could but you can't .you can sand it and reduce the width and the High but no cutting or drill into it

    yes, you can drill tempered glass folks. this guy pushed to fast and to hard to show what happens when tempered glass does break. I have personaly seen it done and drilled tempered glass myself. You must do it VERY slowly and w the right tool.

    Normal glass is the best tool to shatter tempered glass.if you have a tempered glass coffee table etc be carefull when placing down a cup one wrong move could reduce it to tiny squares of razor sharp glass

      one word... impossible. Tempered glass is not like tempered metal. Tempering process of glass creates high inner positive pressure that if the outside layer is penetrated even as slow as possible, pressure will be released and glass will shatter. You can sandblast /grind slowly the outside layer but you can penetrate the outside layer!

      if there are any videos of somebody drilling a hole in tempered glass. I guarantee you it's not tempered glass it's annealed glass. any Fabrication in tempered glass must be done before the glass is tempered or you will see what happened in this video happen every time if you try to drill it after it's tempered

    • @griefstruelove

      Tempered glass with a hole in it had the hole drilled prior to the glass being tempered. I work for a glass company. We use tempered glass with holes and notches. The holes and notches are cut first then the glass is run through the tempering oven.

    • @dominicknepper2082

      Shawnna Griefnow She is correct. Tempered glass can not be cut, scored or sand blasted. Doing so will result in the glass shattering. Laminate glass can be cut, tempered can not.
