My mother is an avid crocheter. I do not crochet, but I have turned her into a Furls junkie lol. Several years ago she mentioned Furls hooks so I went to their site and bought her her first luxury hook for Mother’s Day. Ever since then I’ve been buying her Furls hooks for every occasion along with accessories like their beautiful yarn bowls, storage units, etc. I always make sure and get her the limited edition hooks as well. With all that being said I just wanted to comment about the Furls hooks in case there are crocheters watching and wondering if they really are worth the price. I would have to say yes because my mom absolutely LOVES them.
Thanks for your review and for taking the time to make these videos. I was looking for some interchangeable needles last month and remembered you did a review earlier on this year. Very happy with my Hiya Hiya set, thanks again!
I have that exact set of Zings. I love them! Viewers should know that they have nickel tips but the body is aluminum, not steel or nickel. I like the surface because the stitches don’t easily slip off the needles, unlike metal Addis. A hint, if you lose the tightening keys, you can use a paper clip!
I do like your very detailed reviews! Love seeing the tip comparisons and also hearing about the length of the tips. These details matter to me. Thanks for doing the work to give a factual review.
I love your mind and how curious you are.. having just turned 70yo I am not feeling as sharp as I once was. I still recall the evening when I was working towards my doctorate and the professor and I became involved in a rather intense argument regarding whether there was a definite , I believe we were using the DSM-111R this was several years ago, whether there was a definitive dx. For depression ALL NEEDING a psychotic component to it. I argued it did not and he argued it most definitely did. Of course I Gave in to his position but was still convinced that I was corrrect. During our next class , I received an apology that he had researched the topic and discussed it with his colleagues and all agreeing in my argument felt a clinical apology was in order. Since then I was not always so quick to think I was always wrong because I was just a student. I must admit as I have gotten older I wouldn’t be so quick to argue any point. So I defer to all your work. BTW I was going to school in NYC and now am disabled living with my daughter in Rochester, NY.. I had the wonderful opportunity to visit a clinician to whom one of our psychiatrists was transferring a patient multiple personality disorder to the wonderful psych. Division at the hospital inRochester, MN. If memory serves me right. It. Was a.extremely impressive place. Most cordially. Patricia Phillips
I have the Akerworks stitch gauge. I got it as a goodie at a knitting retreat. At first I didn’t understand what it was or how it worked and put it aside. Then it all came together and I was floored. What a great tool! It’s so much easier to count stitches through the “cross.” And those little feet holding it on to the knitting - genius!
Hi Colleen -- what a great little retreat prize! Yes, I love it; it's pretty amazing yet simple. Thank you for sharing your experience and for watching my video. ♥
As always, thank you for your thorough, unbiased review of these needles. I'm currently using an interchangeable set of Knit Pro Zings on a sweater which uses 3 different size needles. Changing the needle size is so easy with this set. Now that I appreciate the flexibility of interchangeable needles, I regret having waited so long to purchase a set. The cost of an interchangeable set is so much more than a single circular needle. You are providing an invaluable service. Wish that I had discovered you sooner. Looking forward to whatever you're going to talk about next! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Hi Joan! It's awesome to hear that the Zings are performing so nicely for your sweater project. Yes, I have been an interchangeable needle junkie, but I've destashed all but a few of my sets at this point. I'm glad to hear you are enjoying my videos -- thanks for watching! ♥
I discovered your channel today and been binge watching! I love the format you created, great job!! I purchased the Akerworks Swatch Gauge and what ever you do don’t leave it loose in a knitting bag, mine was broken two days after I purchased it. I was able to glue it back together and it works fine, just sad it did break. The knitting bag is my travel knitting so it’s not just yarn in there, my travel iPad, knitting notions. I rarely write comments on any forum but love your channel, subscribed and am an instant fan! Thank you!
Aww, thanks, LaNecia! I'm so sorry to hear about your Akerworks swatch gauge, though. Mine is so thick, it seems like it would be difficult to break. I guess we have to be careful with it, though. Thank you for your comment! XO
Hi! I have used the Prym circular needles several times. I really like them for knitting with "splitty' yarns, especially cotton and bamboo that have lots of plies. One of my needles also has a slight catch between the needle and the purple end, as you mentioned. I also have a Lykke circular needle. I don't have a problem at all with the join on mine, but I do find that the cord is too stiff which I find very annoying. Thanks for all the information that you give on the different needles!
Hi Kristine, I like checking out new needles also. I have a 4.5 inch Lykke interchangeable tip in size 8 I bought on Amazon. I looked at the Lykke cords but decided to wait and get the needles first and see if they fit any other cords and they do fit nicely all my Knit Pick & Knitter's Pride cords. I like the look and feel of that needle tip. I also got the Neko needles in two sizes and have used them in finishing hats. Found them on ebay last year when I could not find them anywhere else. I have not used them to make an entire hat, but maybe I shall try that. I bought them with the intent that I did not love using dpn's finishing my hats for the same reasons you mentioned. I also saw the PRYM's on line and checked Amazon and they had a few. So I got the double pointed set also. Have not tried them on a project yet. I do like wooden dpn's and use them in making short items, like a blanket (www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ten-stitch-blanket) I am making that starts in the center and works round corners and so use 6 or 8 inch dpns and usually put a needle point protector on one end so not to lose stitches. (essentially making a straight needle which is shorter than the 10 inchers out there) I really like the Deborah Norville dpn's and they are the ones I have been using. Just found them at a craft shop and tried them out. They are inexpensive and you can use a 40 or 50% coupon. They are wood I think but seem to have a nice, smooth coating on them and they have a good hand feel for me. Knitter's Pride Marblz is a nice needle too. I have two sizes of interchangeable tips that I enjoy using. They are a little flexible and I love the colors! I also saw the Knitter's Pride Zing and bought size 6 interchangeable needle tip and love it. It fits all my other cords, too. I buy a lot of needles on Handsome Fibers who have discounts and free shipping. They package their needles in a most excellent way and they always arrive safe and sound and fast. So basically I guess I have made quite a set of interchangeable needles w/o buying a whole set. Although I do have a set of Knit Picks Nickle Plated regular tips and Caspian Short Set that I started out with. Depending on my mood, I guess, I choose a needle to use on a new project. Different colors make it fun! Thanks for your great videos. Your one on all the needles with the spread sheet is fantastic!
Hi Donna -- thank you for sharing your interesting experiences. We have so much in common! :) I loved reading your comment, and thanks for watching my videos. ♥
It's my knitting needle review video from earlier this year, which you can see here: goo.gl/wV5kGV The spreadsheet is linked in the information box below the video. :)
I have the Lykke short needle set and absolutely love it. The cord doesn't bother and loosened up a bit with use and I have had no problem at all with catching. I feel bad that you seem to have bought a defective pair.
Hi Patricia -- this is good to know. Thanks for sharing. I am going to get another pair of Lykkes and hopefully they will have a smooth join. I really want to try them out! ♥
I need to correct what I wrote earlier today. I bought 3 different Knitters Pride needles and forgot what was what. The incredibly loud ones I described below are Karbonz. I will also note that after one use (700 yards), the size printed on the needle is almost worn off - not a big deal since I always have a gauge, but still surprising. Apologies to Zings which I haven't tried yet. Also thanks again for another information filled podcast.
Hi Linda -- yes, I noticed that the printing on the Karbonz needles wore off very quickly. I do like knitting with them, though. But I destashed my set because the tips were too long. One of these days I might get the shorter-tip set.
i have the longer Lykke set and I love it! i normally do addis and the Lykke slick but it takes some getting use to shorter taper and blunter tip. but i am in love!
Hi Carrie -- that's awesome! I am going to try a different pair of Lykke circulars and hopefully the joins will be smooth. I really want to knit with them. ♥
I have both the Signature and Zing interchangeable and the Zing win hands down for me - just love them! The feel, the length, the weight and the cords but like you, I would like swivel cords.
Hi Annie -- yes, but even though they don't have the swivel cords, I'm really enjoying the Zings. :) Thanks for your comment and for watching my video. ♥
I like the knitting needle storage ideas ( but not the book review). I particularly like the binders but not having to use all that plastic! So... I'm going to use fine jute (maybe snip a couple of threads for bigger needles), hem or overlock the edges and hole punch binder hole positions. Then thread the knitting needles a few times into the jute as I would in a needle case. I will embroider sizes in the top right corner of each 'page'. Just in case needles start to work loose, I might invest in a strip of rubber with two holes slightly smaller than the needle size and stitch it to the jute (hessian sacking). Packets I can inset into flaps like fabric rolls. These solutions will be as environmentally friendly as I can be.
Thanks Kristine! Always love your show. I've heard good things about Lykke but not happy to hear about the join you dealt with for your fixed circulars. I know you did a review of HiyaHiya sharps on your last review of needles, and I am finally using a fixed circular HiyaHiya and am having the same issue with the join. Not happy about it and I don't think I'm used to points this sharp as I pushed too hard on my index finger and now have a little cut. I'm an English style knitter so I use my left pointer finger to push the needle down. I feel like I'm always trying new needles and then always go back to Knitters Pride. I just really enjoy several types of their needles. I wish your husband could rebuild our deck. It needs it badly! Have a great week 😀
Hi Jen! Thanks for your comment. Sorry to hear about your experience with the Hiya Hiyas -- I haven't had any bad luck with them. I think I'm going to try another Lykke needle, though, because I want to give it another chance. :) I also sometimes push the tip of the left needle with my finger, and I knit continental. Yes, the Hiya Hiya Sharps are ...well, sharp. Thank you for watching! ♥
Kristine Kelly thank you! Yes I like the HiyaHiya, but I think maybe the interchangeable set may have smoother joins. Good luck with the Lykke needled. Let us know your thoughts. :)
Thank you for another informative video on knitting needles. Your research saves me time & money & I appreciate that. I have quite a few Knitter's Pride interchangeable needles already but I'm thinking of giving the Zings a try. I don't mind wood needles either because I feel my stitches won't fall off the needle as easily with wood as they do with metal. I guess that's why we have to have so many different kinds of needles (or, at least, that's what I tell myself. I enjoy your videos so much, Kristine. I know it's weird but I feel like we're friends.
I appreciate your videos as they are always informative. I own the Akerworks gauge, but I haven't really used it yet. Thanks for the info on the Knitter's Pride Zings!
Hi Kat -- nice to see your comment here. I'll probably try another Lykke needle just to see if the joins are smooth. I want to give it a fair shot. Thanks for watching and for being so sweet! ♥
I bought a set of the Lykke long interchangeable needles from Handsome Fibers during their recent sale. I did not see sloppy joins. I used the cotton ball test on several pairs of needle tips and I used the size 6 and size 5 on 2 different projects. I was particular about the feel of the needles because I usually use cubic needles for ergonomic comfort. I have had no discomfort using these needles yet. I believe it’s because the needle tips are light in weight. One reason I bought the set is I want to use the larger needle sizes on some new contemporary patterns and this set goes up to size 17! Thanks for your thorough needle review. I may try the curved dpns but I usually use magic loop. Also you saved me from buying the Prymm’s ergonomic needles. I don’t think they would suit me.
Hi Bettye -- yes, I think that one pair of Lykke needles was just a bad one. I bought another one and the joins were fine. However, I really don't like the cords on them. They are too stiff for me. But I hope you are enjoying them. I ended up not loving the Prym needles or the Nekko curved ones. They are ok but are not ones that I will reach for a lot. XO
Thanks so much for another informative video. I'm currently searching for a set of interchangeable needles because buying them separately adds up so quickly. I'm following a series of craftsy knitting classes and the range of sizes needed puts the knitters pride zings in the right spot. I will check them out. Thanks again
Happy New Year Kristine. I know I'm late with that but been away for a bit. Spent the holidays away from home and just returning. Thanks for the review. I promised myself new knitting needles as well as a few crochet hooks. Been using Susan Bates circular set since the 1980s. Really time to catch up. I am looking at the Chiao Goo set due to metal allergy. Can use stainless, don't care for the wood needles. I watched your previous review, helped a lot. Just received my first Furls hook. The new Streamline Series. Only one, as the are custom made of wood.
Hi Rosalind -- thank you, and Happy New Year to you! That Furls crochet hook sounds beautiful. All of their products are just gorgeous. I think you will love the ChiaoGoos so much more than the Susan Bates. Let me know if you get them and what you think. XO
Hi, Dr. Kelly..I am currently using a Size 7 pair of the Lykke fixed circular needles to knit a hat and the join is smooth as a baby's bottom. I wonder if you got a defective pair. Take them back to the store you purchased them from (or get in touch with the online vendor you purchased them from and see if they'll send you a replacement pair.) I am enjoying them, but my LYS had only 32-inch cord lengths on the fixed circular I purchased. I think that's a bit short to do a hat using Magic Loop. Love your podcasts as they are so informative and well thought out. I always look forward to viewing each episode. Thank you for your reviews as they help us make informed decisions.
Hi Kelly -- nice to hear from you! Yes, I think I will try out a different pair of Lykke needles, and hopefully the joins will be smooth. I really want them to work! :) Thanks so much for your comment. ♥
Happy belated birthday!!!! Thank you for your honest reviews. I have lykke fixed size us5 and also an interchangeable set. I believe you got a bad Needle and you can have it replaced. They have lifetime guaranteed. They are a pleasure to knit with and are very similar to the knitters pride dreamz needles .
Hi Brenda! Thank you for the birthday wishes. :) And thanks for letting me know about your Lykke experiences. I'm going to try another one and see if the joins are smoother. I want to give it a fair chance. Thanks for watching! ♥
Loved seeing these reviews. I do have an opinion on the Lykke interchangeable needles. I love mine I love the weight of them in my hand and the tips are wonderful. My experience with them is that they are not like the individual needles that you reviewed. Mine don’t have an edge to catch anything on their joints are very smooth. I hope that you find this helpful in some way. I love watching your channel, you are so good and very thorough in your videos. I think you are wonderful. Happy Knitting, Robin Medrud
Hi Robin -- thanks for leaving this comment. I am going to pick up another pair of Lykke circulars and hopefully they will have a smooth join. I'll let you know! Thank you for watching. ♥
I have a fixed set of US 6, 32" Lykke circular needles and I love them. The join and shaft on mine are flawless. The cord is a little stiff but it doesn't bother me. I really like them and would buy another pair.
Hi Susan -- thanks for letting me know about that. I am going to get another Driftwood circular and see if the joins are smoother. I want to give them a fair chance. Thank you for watching. ♥
You are the best. We always learn something on your podcast. I have to agree about the join on the "driftwood" needles. I thought they were rough as well.
Hi Eileen -- nice to hear from you! I'm going to try another Driftwood needle to see if the joins are smoother. I want to give it a fair chance. Thanks for your comment. ♥
I’m currently knitting a sweater using Lopi yarn on the fixed Lykke needle. No problem with the join on this circular. I find them to be quite comfortable. I think that joining wood to metal with something with such a small circumference will probably not be perfectly smooth 100% of the time.
Great video! Very informative! I started the What The Fade MKAL with a size 3 fixed circular Lykke needle. No problem with the join, it was perfectly smooth. What I did notice was the stitches didn’t slide easily. The wood slowed them from moving along. Maybe it would be better for more slippy yarn
Hello, and thanks for sharing your experience. I am going to try another Lykke needle and hopefully the joins will be smooth. I do think wood needles work better for slick yarn like silk. ♥
I have a Lykke circular needle ,fixed I think 42 inches and I love it for sweaters. The feel of the wood is lighter than other woods and smooth joins. Your comment on the interchangeable makes me hesitate, they were good comments. But I do recommend the fixed circulars
Hello -- thanks for letting me know about that. I am going to try another set of fixed circulars and see if they have smooth joins. I want to give them a fair chance. Thank you for watching! ♥
Hi Kath -- thanks for your comment. If that's what the tip design is for, I can tell you it doesn't work because it was splitting the yarn I was using. Kind of surprising that it did, as the tip seems like it wouldn't. They're definitely interesting needles to use, though. Thank you for watching. ♥
Thank you for the thorough review, Dr. Kelly! I really appreciate the time you take to give us in depth reviews. I also appreciate that you include the price of things. A lot of times I will see a review and price isn't mentioned and then I go to look at the products ( like the Signature needles that everyone had to have last year) and the price is prohibitive for me! Knowing the price of things really helps those of us who want quality, but may not have an unlimited knitting budget! I looked at the Lykke needles at the yarn store and they are so gorgeous. I notice a lot of podcasters using them, they must be nice. I think I maybe will order some Zings. I have a set of Hiya Hiya circulars that I love, but I can always do with another set of circular interchangables.
Hi Maggie -- so nice to hear from you! Yes, I totally understand about the prices. So many people are on a budget, but there are still very nice tools (like the Zings) that are cost effective. I am in the process of moving some projects onto my Zings now. Thanks for your sweet comment, and I'm glad you are enjoying my videos. ♥
I have and use the Akerworks swatch guage. It's easier to get a stitch and row count using it instead of some of the other guages on the market. Also have Prym ergonomic needles. Have two sizes of straights, 2 sizes of circulars and one size of the dpn's. I love using them. My stitches stay on the needles and don't slip off and lastely I also have one sock size and one hat size Neko curved dpn's. Neko curved dpn's work very well for socks. Love the products that I've purchased and as a new knitter, recommend them.
Hi Becca -- good to hear from you about your experiences. It's always helpful to see what others have used and what works. I ended up not being a big fan of the Neko needles, but I think they are worth trying. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. :)
Sometimes, I believe that knitting needles are just personal preference, I find that I enjoy different types of needles for different types of projects and that the fiber may decide which needle may suit the project best. I am wondering though, if you may have gotten a "dud" with your LYKKE circulars, My short interchangeable set is just lovely. Smooth joins --- no snagging -- sharp enough without going through my fingers (I have a tendency to push with my right index finger) yet I have found that they do not split or catch my yarn as I knit. The cords become pliable as I work with them so I am very happy with the product. And an added benefit is that they fit with the "Knitter's Pride" cords (aren't they actually the parent company?) All in all I felt it was money well spent and am looking to purchase the double point set as well. So enjoy your podcast -- You offer such valid and interesting information -- just wish you had lectures here in Dallas, Texas.
Hello, and thank you for your nice comment. I agree that needles are totally personal preference. I mostly knit with metal needles (my preference), but I do use wood or bamboo occasionally for the slippery yarns like silk. It sounds like I did get a Lykke dud and am going to try out another pair. Hopefully it will have the smooth joins everyone is reporting. It's also good to know that the interchangeable set will work with the Knitter's Pride cords, which I have a TON of. I don't think Lykke and Knitter's Pride are affiliated, but I suspect their needles are made in the same factory (along with the KnitPicks needles), as they are all interchangeable with each other. Thanks for watching! ♥
Kristine, I have all the Neko Curved Double Pointed Needles. I got the all the sizes for socks for Christmas last year 2016. I knit two pairs of socks with the 1.5 red size needles and a sock with the 2.5 yellow needles using Pairfect Sock Yarn I got last Christmas too. The curved needles are not bad I was really obsessed with them before I got them for Christmas. But after knitting two pairs of socks with them they are not to bad. I do agree they are pretty seamless way of knitting. But my very favorite needles are my 9 inch Hiya Hiya and Chiagoo needles. The Neko Curved Double Point Needles are 3rd in my favorites. If you would like to see my socks I had made with my Neko Needles you can message me through sock media.
Hi Cindy -- I love doing socks on 9" needles, too. We are kindred spirits. I probably wouldn't do the whole sock on the curved DPNs, but I was thinking of just using them for closing the toe. Did you do the Kitchener stitch with them? I wondered how awkward it would be with the Neko needles.
Thank you for all the great reviews! The Lykke needles are so pretty! Too bad the join is so rough. The curved ones are really interesting and would be fun to try.
Thank you so much for your honest reviews. I was contemplating the LYKKE needles but I am rethinking after your review I think it might be very difficult to match my hiya hiya sharp interchangeables. Everyone is talking about those needles in Canada and I was wondering how they reviewed. Again another great episode!
Hi Cindy -- thanks for your comment. From a lot of the comments here, I may have just gotten a bad pair of circular needles. I'm going to try another one and see if the joins are better. I want to give them a fair chance. Thank you so much for watching! ♥
I recently bought a couple of Zings and a Lykke, despite the fact that I much prefer smooth metal to wood. I found the Lykke surprisingly smooth and enjoyable to use. I'm not sure I will buy more but I do like it. The Zings are another story. Despite their similarity to Signatures, I always knew by the feel I wasn't knitting with Signatures. But the worst was the noise. We all knit differently so I'm sure not all will experience this, but they made a noise so loud I didn't want to knit in public. I didn't like the noise myself and couldn't wait to finish the project ad be done with them. So these needles - despite their slightly higher price - will either get given away or be kept for last, last resort. Too bad because the interchangeable set looks attractive.
Hi Linda -- I think I am going to get another pair of Lykke circulars and see if the join is better. And I saw your correction above that it was the Karbonz and not the Zings that made the noise. It's strange because I have used both Karbonz and Zings quite a bit, and I haven't had any noise issues. It's probably just different knitting styles, and what works for one person may not be right for everyone. :)
I'm new to your channel...I decided today to subscribe....I love your videos...so informative....thanks for sharing your knowledge...you're a great communicator. :)
Instead of Prym curved dpns I use 3 - 9 inch circular needles. The stitches stay on the cable part very nicely. It's flexible as opposed to rigid dpns. I don't get ladders. They come in all sizes. They are made out of metal. I don't have to use stitch markers. I don't have to change needles when shaping a toe or the top of a hat. 3 - 12 inch circulars could be used when casting on a hat or working a sleeve. Just an idea for you to try. Happy Knitting!
Hello -- I love this idea. It's a pretty similar concept to the new Addi flex needles that are just coming out. I will have to try those, too. :) Thanks for sharing and for watching my video. ♥
I can't believe I missed this episode! I'm glad I found it! Happy belated Birthday! I must admit I have never seen or used any of the items you reviewed in this video. I can't believe the price of those crochet hooks! I won't be buying any of those. I will, however, try the stitch gauge and the curved DPNs! Thank you so much for another great video.
Hi Sandy -- thanks so much. You know, I ended up not loving those curved DPNs. Maybe you will like them more than I did. I'm trying out the new Addi Flex ones now and will probably talk about them on a future video. XO
I did love the idea of the Ankerworks stitch and row counter. Other's mileage might differ. I was knitting at my desk , carpeted floor , it fell off the edge and has cracked and not once but broke twice. It was more brittle than I imagine it would be, was able to save it both times with super glue ( was saying some bad words the second time it happened) :-/ Still think it is a fantastic idea but perhaps it becomes brittle with age ??
Thank you for this. I would like to try the Prym ergonomic ones. I have the Neko in size 1.5 and used them for socks but am not convinced as I had two needles that broke as I was knitting my sock! The company did replace the broken needles but I haven't used these again as I find the hassle of losing my stitches midrow to be annoying. I think they need to work on the solidity of the plastic they use in these fine needles. I'm sure the bigger sizes will not break as easily.
Hello! Yes, you might like the Prym needles. :) That's too bad about the Neko curved DPNs. I haven't tried out my 1.5 needles, but a couple of people have said they are more fragile than they look. So I'm not so sure about wanting to use them in the smaller sizes now. Thanks for sharing and for watching my video! ♥
I think you just ended up with a bad Lykke needle and should exchange them. I purchased fixed pair before purchasing the shorter set. I find them very smooth and comfortable. The cords are a bit stiff so I left them out straight to relax a bit. However the cords are interchangeable with Knitters Pride cords.
I spoke to soon. I had issues with interchangeable pieces. Luckily I was knitting in the store.I️ ordered a set during a sale today. I still love how they feel!
Hi Glenda -- glad you found the information helpful. Does Akerworks not ship internationally? I didn't know that. But yes, I know that knitting tools can be expensive (plus, shipping is not cheap either). Anyway, thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. ♥
My mother crochets for hours at a time and recently started having nflamd joints at the base of her thumb. I bought her the Furls Odyssey hook and now she's hooked on Furls. They have the Streamline hooks which are solid hand turned wood hooks and they're only $16 a piece. I've bought her several different Furls depending on what's on sale. She can crochet for hours without any hand discomfort and Furls has a hand health guarantee with each hook. I love your videos and Mom who doesn't knit likes your videos, too. I have a pair of Addi FlexiFlips. They are so easy to use. Thanks for the great videos, Heather
Hi Heather (and your mom, too) -- I don't crochet, but I do use a crochet hook to pick up dropped stitches, etc. with my knitting. I think the Furls hooks are so beautiful and feel great in the hand. I'm glad your mom is enjoying them and that they're giving her the opportunity to craft more. :) I have some of the Flexi Flips needles and am planning to talk about them in a future video. :)
I'd try the pryms, they look interesting I find dpns at Joann fabrics, I ordered multiple sets of circular needles from wish, because I could get all sizes of needles for a inexpensive cost in multiple lengths
To avoid laddering, When you start with a new needle, slide 3 or 4 stitches that were last knit. This will help to avoid the laddering. I just a few days ago found your videos. They are great.
thank you for your honest reviews. I'm really interested in trying the short tip interchangable set. A friend has the set that came in the xmas box and she loves them. The Lykke needle I have tried and I enjoyed knitting with them. I had no issues with the join. I will admit I do like the feel of a wood needle. The downside to them is the needle tip. Have you seen the curved dpns that have a small cable in the middle which differ slightly from the solid ones that you reviewed? I'm not sure what company makes them but have seen them on a UK site. After your review of the curved plastic needle I would be interested in trying a set - and I think your project of a hat would be perfect. Once again thank you for your honest and thorugh reviews.
Hi Lynne -- thanks for your comment. Are you talking about the Melodies of Life (in the box)? I had them and liked them, but they had the longer tips so I destashed them. These Zings are the same thing, only I got the shorter tips, which I love. For an interchangeable set, I think the Zings price at around $50 is very reasonable. I'm going to try another Lykke needle and see if the joins are smoother. I want to give them a fair chance. Oh, and a few people have told me about the new Addi flex needles (something like that) -- I can't wait to try one out, but I don't see them for sale anywhere yet. Thank you for watching! ♥
I purchased one Lykke fixed circular needle at my local knit shop. I like the actual wooden needle part, but the cord had a horrible piece of extra plastic appendage attached that snagged constantly on my yarn. It was very annoying. I had to take a nail file and work on whittling it off. It worked, but for the price I shouldn't have to fix a brand new needle cord in order to use it.
Hi, Kristine. I’m a new subscriber. (13:33) Why did you ask non-knitting students their opinion on interchangeable cords? I replayed that portion 4x to be certain I heard correctly. What viewpoints did non-knitters offer which would be overlooked by knitters?
Hello! And thanks for subscribing. The rating was done for my previous needle review video about 6 month ago. As a researcher, psychologist, and knitter, I knew that knitters would have their own needle/cord preferences. And they would likely recognize the cords. So I wanted to avoid any bias in ratings, and that is why I asked my non-knitting students to do the ratings. I just gave them rating sheets with instructions on them, and then they touched and manipulated the cords, and then made their ratings. I'm more confident the ratings are unbiased because these students had probably never touched knitting needles or cords before so didn't already have preconceptions about what they were rating. :)
I really enjoyed your review on these needles. I recently bought the Signature dpn's just to see how they are. I loved them except the main part of the needles have this strange feel which is hard to describe. It is probably just me but it sort of bothered me lol. I won't bother to buy any Lykke. I didn't really like the look and I don't use many wooden needles. The Prym look very odd lol. The ones with the bend I may try sometime even though I don't love plastic. They look like they would be a fun sock needle for the heel area. I usually knit mine with 9" circular. (I'm a new sock knitter so I haven't tried all the different ways to knit them.) I would LOVE to buy a Furls. It's the price that has held me back. I used to crochet a lot until it gave me a lot of hand pain. Now I do small projects in between knitting projects. I am looking forward to hearing about the milk yarn lol as I told you before. Thanks again, see you soon! Sharon :) I forgot to mention the Zings. I only have a few dpn's and one fixed but I really like them. I hope to get more in the future. I think my favorites though, are Chiaogoo and Hiya Hiya but my Zings come in after those.
Hi Sharon -- we are on the same page about so many things! I love doing socks on 9" needles, too. And my favorite needles are the Hiya Hiyas and Chiaogoos, but the Zings are right up there. Thanks for watching and for commenting. ♥
Great review! I bought on Lykke fixed needle and the cord is terrible stiff and curled up. Would it work to dip the cord in boiling water? For the price, the cord should be better.
Hi! Just bought the Knitters Pride set based on your glowing revue. Hope to solve all of the issues my Addi needles drive me crazy with; curly cables, cables popping off in the middle of a row, needle size rubbing away, yarn snags.... Urgh! Thank You! :)
Thank you for this review. I was recently researching a set of interchangeable needles (wood)to use with linen. I have a wool allergy so I use linen, cotton, and some silk. I was debating between the Addi bamboo and the Tulip Carry C interchangeable needles. The Tulip have a swivel join and a rubber ring to keep them from coming undone. I didn’t want to have to carry a tool to tighten the join so they made my short list. I don’t think they are super sharp so maybe not the best for lace-not sure. In the end I ordered a set of Addi bamboo because I found a set for a reasonable price. I was wondering if you have used the Tulip needles?
Hi Carol -- thanks for your comment. I have not used the Tulips, but I'm going to put them on my list for a possible future review. I hope you ended up liking your Addi bamboos. ♥
Always enjoy your podcasts, and yes already ordered my Ackerworks swatch gauge! I am currently knitting with my new Lykke needles. Socks. They are 2.25, 40” circs. The first one I received did have a slight catch on one join, but the Etsy vendor and Lykke.com replaced it easily and promptly. The needles are guaranteed for life. The new one is sleek and very light to hold. The cord is flexible ( not like the one you showed) and the tips are pointy enough but not enough to split the yarn. I am really enjoying these needles.
Hi Ann -- so nice to hear from you! Yay, I hope you love the new swatch gauge (I think you will). I am going to get a different pair of Lykke circulars and hopefully the join will be smooth, and maybe the cord will be a little less stiff. I really want to try them out. ♥
Hi. Thank you for the thorough review of the needles you chose to try out. I am curious about your preference for using short needle tips as opposed to “standard” lengths. Is it that you find them more comfortable? Is there something in particular you don’t like about using the other options? I’m not a huge fan of regular-sized needles, but it never occurred to me that I could use shorter ones. Is that what you do, or have I misunderstood?
Hi Michelle! Yes, I do use the shorter tips on everything (not just the 16" hat-length cords). I guess over the years I have just found that they work better for me and I find them more comfortable, yes. I feel like the longer tips are more awkward for me to use. You might try out a shorter tip and see how you like them for a project. :)
Hi Kristine- thank you for the quick reply! I decided to cast on some stitches for a gauge swatch using the shorter tips. I think I'm hooked! I have small-ish hands and so far this seems more comfortable. I wonder if my tension will improve now that I won't be, for lack of a better term, "fighting" the longer needle tips. Love your videos!
Ok Ok Kristy, we want to see inside your favorite notion's pouch/bag and what you really carry all the time in your current project bag, You seem to love a lot of products but really what do you use right now?? We really want to know! Love your videos!
I might try the knitters pride zing needles. I need shorter tip needles, I love knitters pride but I love wood tips over metal so I not sure if that set is right for me or not. Thank you for your honest reviews.
Hi Kassie! Do you have the Knitter's Pride Dreamz? They are wooden needles if you are interested in that more than the metal ones. I am really liking the Zings, though, and am in the process of transferring some of my projects over to them. ♥♥♥
Hi. Thank you for your detailed evaluations. I have a question about the Zings Special. Went to look to buy them and it stated the set included only 2 - 16 inch cords. Does that mean other cord sizes would have to be bought separately?
Mi Mary Ellen -- yes, the "special" sets only come with the 16-inch cords because most people use the shorter needle tips for smaller-circumference projects like hats (which are perfect for the 16" circs). But, yes, you'd have to buy separate cords if you want the longer length. If you have any other Knitter's Pride interchangeables, their cords will work with these tips. If not, the cords are pretty inexpensive, though.
The issue of the nylon cords is that they stay curled up. The ChiaGoo cords are flexible, but, don't stay curled up when you take them out of the package. I feel this curling will distort your fabric, which the ChaiGoos don't do. Now, they just need to male a swivel cable.
I purchased a number of bamboo needles and in the batch I received there are 6 Clover FLEX knitting needles. They consist of one needle attached to a plastic wire with a bamboo stopper at the end. Can anyone explain the proper usage of these needles, to me? Thank you
Have you ever reviewed the swift that just sits on a table. Does it stay in place. I have the one that fastens to the side of the table but I don't always have a table it will fit on.
I've tried the Neko curved needles and they just didn't work for me, I felt like I was bending them so much that I was going to snap them. (well, I've snapped wood DPNs a few times!) I do have a Furls Odyssey crochet hook that I got when I was working on a big blanket project which ended up taking about a year - it's a really wonderful crochet hook, I really love it.
Hi Lisa -- nice to hear from you! Thanks for your comment. I can see where the curved DPNs might not work for some people. Did yours snap at the curve? When I was using them, they didn't seem to have a lot of tension on them. I guess it's just how each of us knits that's important in determining what tools will work for our individual style. :)
I tend to knit quite tightly - when I write, it's like I'm trying to "engrave" haha. The Neko needles never actually snapped/broke but the "flexible bounciness" bending of the needles was not the best for me. I do prefer metal DPNs, I have a few wood DPNs that have the permanent bow to them from my "harsh handling" of them. OH, I forgot to mention that I have tried the Lykke needles, they were nice and I had no issues at the joins but I don't see myself getting more or a whole set. I often wonder if issues at the joins happen when needles become so quickly mass produced to meet popularity demands.
I love your videos! Have you seen or tried the Addi CraSy Trio needle set? They seem to be like the Neko curved DPNs except that they are flexible metal. They seem to be used in the same way. Love all your videos!
Hi Sonia -- I have seen these but they don't seem to be available in the U.S. yet. I think they are being marketed under the name Addi Flexi Flips. Genius! It's basically like knitting with several 9" circular needles. I'm dying to get my hands on them and try them out. :)
I guess if one has a tiny 2 or 3 inch cable, interchangeable needles could be used like this. I am going to try that! I know how to make the cables for my needles but I have never made one that small.
Thank you for your great reviews! I’m really intrigued by the curved DPNs. I may have to put those and one or two sizes of the Zings on my Christmas list. :) Have you tried the Igknite needles at all? I’ve been curious about them, but my LYS didn’t have them in the longer length cord size that I like. They have birch shafts and medal tips, so I’m hoping that they’ll be a little grippier than the all metal sock needles I have.
Hi Marilea -- thanks for watching! I haven't tried the Igknite needles, but I'm going to put them on my list for a future review. They remind me of the Knitter's Pride Royales because they have the wood shaft but metal tip. Maybe I will do a comparison of the two. I think I might like them better than plain wood needles because of the metal tips. Thank you for the suggestion! ♥
Be careful they can crack in half. My husband repaired my Akerwork gauge with an acrylic glue but just guard them. I love mine so, I was heartbroken. But thankfully he was able to fix it.
Hi Kristine I found your review just in time. I want to buy a new set of interchangeable needles and I'm contemplating between the Zing's and the chiaogoo. I have been knitting for over 20 years and want to start knitting socks but I see the sets start at size US 3 or 4. Do they have smaller tips to add to the set? Size 1.25 or 1.5. I also just got kits to make shawls. The needles I've using for years a the Denies brand. So slow. Help me make a wise choice because this will be an investment that I'll have to live with. Thanks so much. Love watching YOU
Hi Mary -- I would look up some knitting tutorials here on UA-cam. There are many videos showing beginning knitting, and I would follow their recommendations as to what type of needles and yarn to start with. Best wishes to you.
I have just purchased signature needles set last month but the wires are black and yours are not black. Are the cords are available in different color?
Hi Jennifer -- thanks for sharing. Well, it's not surprising. Seeing how closely the Lykke resemble the KP Dreamz, I wonder if they are made in the same factory.
Yikes! I am a confident beginner! Which needles would you recommend for me? I want to make sweaters, hats, scarves and lots of socks! I am not afraid of advanced needles because I love a challenge.
Hello! Oh that's hard to say -- it's difficult to pick out needles for someone else. It mostly depends on your preferences. Do you like metal or wood/bamboo needles? Do you like pointy or blunt tips? Do you like tips that swivel on the cords? I wouldn't classify needles as "beginner" or "advanced;' it really depends on what the person enjoys using. 💜
I just got a Zings interchangeable set. I had to exchange it because several of the tips were inconsistent. Some were more blunt and others pointy. I have had this problem with other knitters pride needles. They have a lifetime guarantee so you can exchange them but it is annoying. If I continue to find this a problem I’ll have to return them and invest in either the Hiya Hiya or Chiaoogoo set. It’s disappointing since the price is reasonable and I can use the cords from my Dreams set.
Hi Barbara -- oh that's too bad. Interesting, too, because I haven't heard of any other problems like that. I am a big fan of the Hiya Hiyas (and Chiaogoos are my second favorite). I do like the Zings, though, and have not had any issues with them like you did.
I bought a set of Necco needles. I like knitting with dpns when making hats. I am making my first pair of socks on dpns. I hope someone comes up with a video using the Necco needles. I think I would feel comfortable using them if I could watch a video.
Hi Irene -- did you see the clip I inserted of me knitting with them in this video? There also may be other videos showing the curved DPNs in use here on UA-cam. Thanks for watching and for your comment. ♥
I purchased a single fixed circular LYKKE,2.50 or US1.5, for my socks magic loop. First of all, the cord will drive you crazy, it did me, always in the way,& I felt like the needle was going to snap in half, and they are made in India??? So I knitted the cuff & swapped out to my Chaigoo. My go to along with Knitters Pride. I own fixed, DPN, & interchangeable in both. As far as LYKKE, Clover makes a better wooden needle, so does Deborah Norville. Just my opinion. Great show & review. Thank you.
Hi Louise -- nice to hear from you! Thanks for your informative comment. I'm going to get a different Lykke circular in the hopes that the joins will be smooth. I want to give it a fair shot. But I'm not sure about the stiff cord; I'll have to see when I'm knitting with it. That cord -- I don't do magic loop socks, but as stiff as it was, I don't see how they would be comfortable to use for knitting socks that way. Anyway, thanks for your comment and for watching! ♥♥♥
Hello -- so glad you are enjoying your Hiya Hiyas. I love mine, too. Thanks very much for watching my videos! ♥
Thank you so much for your honest reviews on the new needles! Saves me from many knitting headaches! Blessings....Beverly
Thanks so much, Beverly. ♥
Your podcast is great and different. Always learning. Thank you 😊
Thanks, Pam -- glad you are enjoying it. Thanks for watching. ♥
Love the review of curved dpn’s. Will try these out! TY.
off topic but I loved the solar deck lights. Your husband did a great job on it. thanks for sharing that home project!
Thanks so much, Susie! XO
I was wondering where he bought them?
I think we got them at Menards. :)
Thanks. I had checked Amazon and Home Depot and couldn't find anything like them. I'll check in my area to see if I can find them. Thanks again!
I think these are what we have: goo.gl/JEVUF9
It looks like you can order them online and have them delivered to your house. :)
XO
I bought Lykkes recently - the interchangeable set. So far loving them!
I have tried the Lykke DPN’s, sizes 0 and 7. I love these DPNs and by far are my favorites!
Which video has the spreadsheet?
It's my knitting needle review video from earlier this year, which you can see here: goo.gl/wV5kGV
The spreadsheet is linked in the information box below the video. :)
Thank you very much for another interesting and informative video. I enjoy the thoroughness and depth of your research tremendously.
Hello -- thanks so much for watching! ♥
Live in Europe. LOVE lykka dpns. And I don't typically knit with wood unless nothing else is available.
I just had to order the yarn gauge, this will be so helpful to me for determining my gauge. I'm so glad that you give such through reviews.
Hi Stephanie -- thanks so much for watching. XO
I love zing needles . Also good value for money . I love their dpns also.
Those curved DPNs are so cool! Thanks so much for sharing everything that you do. Educational and interesting, as always. :)
Hi Andi -- it's so nice to hear from you. Thanks for your sweet comment. I'm glad you are enjoying my videos. Have a sparkly weekend at Rhinebeck!
Hello -- thank you so much for sharing your experiences and for your kind remark. :)
I appreciate your videos as they are always informative. I own the Akerworks gauge, but I haven't really used it yet. Thanks for the info on the Knitter's Pride Zings!
Hi Denise, and thanks so much for watching. Glad you are finding the information to be useful. ♥
I agree on the LYkke needle completely. Your the best! Have a good week, love the deck.
Hi Kat -- nice to see your comment here. I'll probably try another Lykke needle just to see if the joins are smooth. I want to give it a fair shot. Thanks for watching and for being so sweet! ♥
JoAnn Fabrics has the Prym needles. I've been using the straight ones to learn lever knitting and have loved them!
I have the Akerworks Swatch Gauge and I love it, best tool I've bought and I love tools. Bought mine from Akerworks online.
Hi Patsy -- that's awesome! Thanks for watching.
Hello -- and thank you for watching. I hope you love the Zings! XO
Happy Knitting,
Robin Medrud
I think that joining wood to metal with something with such a small circumference
will probably not be perfectly smooth 100% of the time.
I believe the teardrop tip on the Prymm needles stops the stitch splitting on pick up, easy to use.
I’m in UK and readily available
Just found this. I love my Zings! You have saved me some money by discussing the Lyykes.
Kristine Kelly
Yes, I did do the Kitchener stitch also on those needles.
Thank you for all the great reviews! The Lykke needles are so pretty! Too bad the join is so rough. The curved ones are really interesting and would be fun to try.
Hi Cayenne! ♥♥♥ I am getting another pair of Lykke needles to try out. Hopefully they will have a smoother join and I can actually use the needles. :)
:)
Hi Lory, and thank you! ♥
Happy Knitting!
sewnut5 What a interesting idea to use 3 9-inch circulars. I might try that on my next pair of socks. What brand of 9 inch circulars do you use?
Hello -- I love this idea. It's a pretty similar concept to the new Addi flex needles that are just coming out. I will have to try those, too. :) Thanks for sharing and for watching my video. ♥
I can't believe I missed this episode! I'm glad I found it! Happy belated Birthday! I must admit I have never seen or used any of the items you reviewed in this video. I can't believe the price of those crochet hooks! I won't be buying any of those. I will, however, try the stitch gauge and the curved DPNs! Thank you so much for another great video.
Hello Sonia -- so nice to hear from you. I hope you enjoy the stitch gauge and the DPNs. :) Glad you found my video -- thanks for watching! ♥
I ALWAYS enjoy your reviews... They are a
Wats thoughtful.
I’d like to try those cool looking DPN’s...
Thsnks...
Wow....all good to know...thanx :)
Hi Melanie -- thanks for letting me know about that. I think I am going to try another fixed circular and hopefully the joins will be smooth. ♥
I had no issues with mine either. My joins are smooth. I find my cords different. I love them!
I spoke to soon. I had issues with interchangeable pieces. Luckily I was knitting in the store.I️ ordered a set during a sale today. I still love how they feel!
Thanks for ur honest reviews great help when choosing as they can b expensive treats love the swatch guage but not avail in uk yet
Thanks for the great videos,
Heather
That's great! Love when you can do that. ♥
To avoid laddering, When you start with a new needle, slide 3 or 4 stitches that were last knit. This will help to avoid the laddering. I just a few days ago found your videos. They are great.
Hi Carole -- thanks so much for your comment. I've actually done that before, but most of the time I'm too lazy, haha! :)
thank you for your honest reviews.
Kristine Kelly I saw them...the flex dpns mentiomed in a UK group so may be they are only available in Europe yet but they look interesting ☺
I would like to see a review of the square cables
Sharon :)
I forgot to mention the Zings.
We sure are!! That's so funny! :)
Urgh! Thank You! :)
Hello -- thanks for your comment. You'll have to let me know how you like them. 💖💙💜
I need shorter tip needles, I love knitters pride but
I love wood tips over metal so I not sure if that set is right for me or not. Thank you for your honest reviews.
Hi Kassie! Do you have the Knitter's Pride Dreamz? They are wooden needles if you are interested in that more than the metal ones. I am really liking the Zings, though, and am in the process of transferring some of my projects over to them. ♥♥♥
I currently have hiya hiya circular sharps. I'm looking for something not quite as sharp. How do Signature Needlle Circulars and Zings compare?
This was very informative! Thank you.
Hi Irene -- thanks for watching! ♥
Thank you
Hello - The stoppers are attached to one end of the cable and that works just like a straight needle then.
Have you ever reviewed the swift that just sits on a table. Does it stay in place. I have the one that fastens to the side of the table but I don't always have a table it will fit on.
Great information/comparisons...
What's your favorite Tunisian Crochet hooks, have you done any reviews of them?
Be careful they can crack in half. My husband repaired my Akerwork gauge with an acrylic glue but just guard them. I love mine so, I was heartbroken. But thankfully he was able to fix it.
I just purchased the akerworks swatch gauge
Hello -- that's awesome. Hope you love it as much as I do. ♥
Hi Kristine
I found your review just in time. Love watching YOU
Hello - I believe the ChiaoGoos have a separate set of tiny needles, like sock size. I'm not sure about the Zings though. 🙂
Hey I want to learn how to knit. What needles do I start with. Do you know where I would start.
Hi Mary -- I would look up some knitting tutorials here on UA-cam. There are many videos showing beginning knitting, and I would follow their recommendations as to what type of needles and yarn to start with. Best wishes to you.
This information is so helpful. Thank you very much. I too use Hiya Hiya's.
Hello, and thank you. So glad to hear you are enjoying the Hiya Hiya needles. :)
I bought the lykee interchangeable set and the first time I knit with them the smallest needle broke in half! Was so mad!
I have just purchased signature needles set last month but the wires are black and yours are not black. Are the cords are available in different color?
West ender Thanks for reply. Yes mine is interchangeable set.
Yes, I have a few Signature fixed circulars, plus they are probably 5 years old. :)
Kristine Kelly thanks Kristine. They had also some fiX circ with black cords.
Lykke are made in India. The "Norwegian" name is good PR
Jennifer, that was the first thing I noticed on the pkg.
Kristine Kelly Yes! Thank you! I was just thinking the same thing. I’m going to have to play around with few styles and see what works best for me😊
Those curved DPN's are very interesting.
Hi Sally -- yes, but I have to say that after using them a bit, I'm not in love with them. I'm just not a big fan of the plastic needles. XO
Try mini interchangeable by Knick pick but Nobody makes cases for these
I love my Zings! x
