When I was young gamer, I first started being a fan of Nintendo games.
This was mostly due to not being able to have enough money to buy other games on other consoles.
From Mario to Zelda to Pokemon and other Nintendo classics.
RARE was another part especially when it came to N64 I loved Donkey Kong Country, Jet Force Gemini and even Killer Instinct and Conker's Bad Fur Day when I grew older.
So when the GameCube period started and I was playing StarFox Adventures that I still remembered as Dinosaur Planet, it was a bitter sweet experience because as much as I loved the beautiful world of Dinosaur Planet, I knew this was going to be the last ever RARE game for a Nintendo console. Considering that RARE was brought by Microsoft it was a painful emotion knowing that if I was going to continue playing games from RARE, I would have to get a different console and experience gaming on two different platforms.
I knew of other games on the SONY PlayStation that I would loved to play but because I didn't have the money to support owning two consoles at one console generation.
When Japanese RPGs started to come back to Nintendo via the GameCube, it was at least 6 months after the departure of RARE when I delved into Skies of Arcadia and I understood going into it that this game was also on the SEGA Dreamcast, SEGA's last ever console. Even the GBA played host to many JRPGs and I was thankful to have the chance to play the earlier Final Fantasy games on the GBA.
And thinking of SEGA, I think of Sonic and I remember having a friend around that time who loved the Sonic games when he was growing up even though he was 5 years younger than me and I only met him around that time in my life.
We were able to play the Sonic games as well as the Mario games, and looked at how great they both are considering their rivalry during the 90s.
When the Nintendo Wii was released, I got that too mostly due to the Virtual Console so I could finally play the NES and SNES games that I never had back then because I was not old enough at the time to buy an NES or SNES and my parents only got me an old Atari 2600 from a second hand electronics shop all because it was cheaper for them.
As well as the GameBoy when I got Donkey Kong Land 2 for it as well as Tetris at the time, Pokemon RED I got during the N64 years when I wanted to train my own Pokemon on Pokemon Colosseum.
So during the Wii yearly years, I noticed that I had started to save up more because I was earning more, and when I found out about other games I wanted on the XBox 360 and the PS3, as well as the PSP at the time. I made an effort to not only just have a Nintendo Wii and a Nintendo DS but also collect the other hardware of the 7th Gen Console Generation and make it my last chance to own all the systems and the games for them.
Dispite spending allot of money around that time in my early to mid 20s, I enjoyed the most out of gaming during that time too.
No long would I look at gaming mags and knowing there were games I could never own because I didn't have the console, and I was able to understand better about the gaming market as a whole as well as getting the chance to own games that would never have been around.
Even focusing on Japanese imported games like on the PS3 that I could never have done on Nintendo's region locked systems.
Even though my early years were all about Nintendo gaming and even RARE gaming, as I grew older and had enough money during my 20s to own all the 3 consoles and 2 handhelds of the 7th Gen Systems, I was able to enjoy Japanese Fighter games, Japanese RPGs, Japanese Shooters, Japanese Dating Sims especially when I imported many of them on the PC (some being H games like School Days, Kana Little Sister as well as Yume Miru Kasuri: Drug that makes you Dream) and DVD platforms. (DVD visual novels from Hirameki include Hourglass of Summer and Phantom of Inferno)
I also experimented in gaming outside of Japan, such as South Korean games like Pangya and Ragnarok that were mostly online games but for the consoles they had offline modes.
Some games I liked from America were Mortal Kombat 9 and Duke Nukem Forever that I enjoyed even though not everyone liked it. I was still able to knowledge what the Duke Nukem game for right while also understanding that the American Army feel of the game kinda didn't suit well to a Duke Nukem game.
So while I am loyal to Nintendo as well as RARE and even Japanese gaming as far as JRPGs and Visual Novels go, I am not a blind fan and understand that even Nintendo has issues that I am not happy with in regards to their Region Lock policies and censorship policies that affect Localising games into America and Europe due to Nintendo of America social BS.
Also I think that while Nintendo makes allot of money on the Amiibos, I do feel that with the Amiibo festival game from what I have seen, they are starting to be really exploitive and not really taking care of how to care for their audience. Almost becomes like a DLC that abuses the wallets of their consumers instead of providing entertainment that is sadly what many smart phone games I see doing with micro transactions wanting to make consumers spend more money on a game they already have played without putting in any effort to provide extra entertainment in return.
Even AAA gaming on consoles using Micro Transactions to exploit gamers to spend extra money on games they have already paid for I don't like. While Nintendo has not gone down this road, they need to be careful with the Amiibos to make sure they are not exploiting consumers for extra cash. Business needs to make money I understand that well, look at SEGA, Atari and even RARE for prime examples of what happens when a game does not make the sales needed to make profit.
But the need to exploit consumers in order to get extra money from games one has already paid for is one of the reasons why I have stayed away from 8th gen systems, including situations in my adult life nowadays prevent me from spending money on games compared to what I used to be 10 years ago.
Still keep up with all the latest games and information thanks to the internet and youtube, but only there watching other people play games and talk about games even being aware of what is on the Steam engine as well as Android and iOS but not owning the systems or accounts to play those games.
Still, as an individual and due to my childhood, I will always be a traditional console and handheld gamer who prefers playing games without internet connection so I don't fall into the trap of paying more for a game I already own.
And I guess that is where my loyalty lies, not to one company but to a kind of lifestyle of gaming before things were always connected online.
