The stamina! The concentration! The joy without limit. He gave his all at every performance and what a treasure he was. So sad we will never see him live on BBC Television any more - these wonderful people are gone but thankfully we have their legacy to enjoy. Perfect.
Hi my friend. You comment brought a memory in my mind of being with my Dad watching a Mr Garner performance in the early 1970s on a UK TV channel.. At that time the BBC was a good supporter of jazz but not sure if this was a BBC broadcast. Will have to do some research. Cheers.
I was introduced to erroll garner when I was 13 yrs old and am now 79 and still listen to his music. I’ve studied them all from bud powell, art Tatum and Vladimir Horowitz and ERROLL GARNER takes a back seat to none of them. No one can match him!
I'm 64 y.o. and have been listening to this stuff since I was about 10. This is pure joy. Thanks to the "Posters" and to UA-cam. Now I sit in front of my PC each night and watch these guys. This is as good as it gets.
good God almighty the man is resting in peace in the cosmos some where charging his spirit and soul preparing for his next encore maybe this next time around he won't drink or smoke- live longer
I have a short list of favorite jazz pianists and I can honestly say: Thelonious Monk makes you think about what he's playing. Art Tatum makes you marvel at his abilities. Bud Powell could make you cry, check out "It never entered my mind." But Erroll Garner? He could make you smile and feel good, simply by listening to his marvelous and utterly unique style of playing.
The first time I've heard of Erroll Garner was one late night. I was watching Classic Arts Showcase. Indeed this is classic. I love it when he makes grunts or talks when he tickles those ivorys.
A real box of surprises, Garner always surprises us, with his unmistakable style and superb swing, Not to mention his incredible harmonic substitutions and wonderful melodic twists, pure art.
Grew up with this music in the 50's. My brother played Garner, Brubeck,Peterson, Shearing, over and over again. I could not understand how he could like music which did not have someone singing words. And although I like all types of music I thank my brother for THIS. Brilliant. Vale Erroll.
i am mesmorized by the sheer joy he experiences when he plays. He is truly one of the best musicians not only of his time, but up to and through the modern jazz musicians today.
thank you to the wonderful people that filmed this so that history can enjoy forever and thank you Errol Garner for your genius music and blessed talent
I TOTALLY agree with you 'dizzypuppy'...Erroll Garner is one of the very BEST jazz pianists EVER! Thanks SO MUCH for sharing this 'My Fair Lady' medley!
Just came across all this incredible EG after years of forgetting him. What a lucky kid I was -- I realize now -- my mom was a singer who retired young to have a family and my dad loved jazz and 'stereo' equipment. Garner's self-taught genius among many other greats filled the houses of my youth...God Bless EG!
After seeing these wonderful youtube videos of Erroll Garner (and many other top jazz musicians), I think I have an insight about why Erroll is so specially regarded (and IMHO deservedly so!): he realizes he is performing, and entertains the audience. Too many jazz musicians act aloof when they perform for whatever reason they choose. Earl shares the fun with the audience, and they appreciate it.
Speaking as a musician and singer, I understand the "sweat' the great Mr. Erroll Garner has...many think that playing the piano is 'playing' and not work. Also, if you listen to the precise notes Mr. Garner is striking, he NEVER misses a note, and that takes WORK. He is an exceptional pianist, and he expresses his notes not only with precision, but a heavier strike to the notes. I hope this helps you, no harm intended. I also believe the hot lights contribute, as with any performers on stage.
Since descovering Erroll Garner i can truly say his playing sends chills down my spine! He was and still remains rellevant to today in my oppinion as the Michael Jackson of the Keys! It is clear Racism, to hell w/ legalities is the cause of this man not being highlighted in any Jazz shows i have seen in over 30 years of my life! TY poster of this great contribution to a very much intentionally distorted History as told by Godly Ordained, by who (?) Generals!
On time everytime i listen to it! I always finish my worldly experience listening to Erroll Garner w/ "Concert by the Sea" a Masterpeice! Yes a black Native American man did it! Free Our History and Thee shall be fullfilled by the same Degrees! Logic not Morallity is needed for this journey Kill the putrid ego and let the Sun shine in!
"I have often walked down this street before ..." - I like that walking rhythm that Erroll opens with and then really flies on Danced All Night - they weren't slow dancing!
'On the street where you live' - the first half of this video, is a master class in pure swing. His playing had a unique quality and he never tries to impress anyone with dazzling technique. Check out 'September Song' if you can find it.
Grande Erroll.!!!
This is superb - but I found out something interesting when Erroll Garner signed his autograph for me in London in 1962: He was left-handed! How about that?
We have made this request before. Begin and complete a comparative study about the piano stylings and talent among Garner Peterson and Tatum. and Tatum for a beginning understanding that sheds light on the details of so much of their talents. Please share the results of your study.

Instead of Prozac, psychiatrists should prescribe Erroll Garner videos.

What chords, what rhythm and style, what a man!
