Mazda hardened the exhaust camshaft from around 2015/2016 because the original was too soft on the lobes. But many 4wd models were slow to sell and sat on the shelf, so shipped and registered later than they appear from the factory. If you have a 4wd model, even facelift, it can have a soft exhaust camshaft.

The newest we seen which had the worn camshaft was a 2017 CX5.

The service manager at my local dealership has a 4wd 2017 facelift model with a worn camshaft but it was actually built in 2015.

My 2016 cx5 also has a worn camshaft. Does this mean that I’ll get the hardened camshaft now when I have it replaced?

Hi! Do you know if deleting the EGR will increase the distance between DPF regenerations? Thank you for your content! With your guidance I carbon-cleaned my 2.2D 2016 Mazda 6. Thanx again!

Hi, can I ask what grain do you use for your walnut media - fine, medium or coarse? And have you tried Garnet? Its much much cheaper than Walnut.

I wonder why some exhaust cams don't wear and some do? I think oil starvation is the problem for those cams, and more regular oil changes and good injector seals will prevent this from happening. That's my spin on it.

They had a batch of bad cams from the cam manufacturer, these cams ended up in engines mainly from 2014 to 2016. Mazda didn't do a recall because, when in an engine, you can't tell a good cam from a bad one until they have been used so Mazda dealt with them on a case by case basis when the problem was discovered. If your mileage is low enough and you can prove the engine was serviced correctly then Mazda should fix it, otherwise you rely on the excellent work that is done here. Mine had the cam go at 63k kms (which basically means it was wearing from new) and the oil was changed every 5k from new.

@@L8xG6 Hopefully you will. Mazda are on the 3rd revision for the camshaft (B at the end of the part number). There are also 3rd party camshafts if you want to try them instead of a Mazda one.

Interesting MPG on this car. Just curious if it's awd or fwd. Mine is AWD which are well known for lower MPG compared to FWD. I have had similar MPG before remap and lost about 5 MPG after. Things got worse while the carbon built up in the intake reaching about 38 before you've done the carbon clean. Now I'm in the region of 43 predominantly city driving so I'd say it's a good improvement.

I bought a quality genuine Bosch MAP sensor made in Japan off eBay for $68 Australian dollars. Mazda quoted $233 for pretty much the same sensor it pays to shop around as long as it's a quality product.
