The new 2024 Toyota Tacoma just destroyed the American truck market, and things are about to get ugly for the big 3. Over the past few months it seems like the midsize pickup truck competition has really heated up. Ford revealed the New Ranger Raptor, Chevy released the new Colorado ZR2 and now after years of not changing anything on the Tacoma, Toyota dropped the most anticipated truck reveal in the last 10 years. You are a genius! I bought my house in 2016 for 121k in a nice suburb north of Houston and it has doubled in value thanks to stupid inflation and stimulus $. I’m gunna have it paid off by beginning of next year. I sold my 2020 F350 platinum diesel last night because I bought it practically new before the pandemic and paid cash. I sold it for a ridiculous price and will drive my 2012 standard cab long bed ugly f150 base with 285k miles and laugh my way straight to the bank. I’ll get a new truck in a few years after the recession that is coming shortly lol and I’ll pay cash more than likely. No way in hell I’m paying more than 65k for a fully loaded platinum diesel or AT4 loaded diesel. They can keep them at 100k . I’ll pick another up for 68k brand new once reality returns (shortly). Same with housing.

Less than that used to get you a full sized with a couple decent options. The midsized trucks have grown a bit to bridge the gap but its still less truck for more money than it was 15 years ago.

Most vehicles are over priced by 15% to 30%. We as consumers can control this by refusing to buy any vehicles until the marketed prices comes into reality.

The problem is most people don’t have pubic transportation as an option when their old vehicle dies. If you already put off replacing a worn out vehicle by 3 years, people are reaching the point they can’t wait any longer.
I ordered a 23 f350 but decided to stick with my 2005 f350 I can’t justify 60k for a base truck with a gas motor
What really sucks is how much these base Mid Size MSRPs have gone up by. In 2020, the Tacoma, Ranger, ans Colorado all started around $24k. Today you are lucky to find a base 2wd for under $30k (at least where I live).
We call this inflation. The dollar is in decline. Soon a base tacoma will cost 100k
its is indeed, I bought a new ranger crew cap, base specs 4x4 under 30K a few years ago. That same truck now will probably be near 40K. At that time I shopped all brands, and ford,GM had better prices. The Tacos were still all mid 30s in my area.
which is why instead of paying that much for a "new truck" just buy an old one and put the extra money into it to restore it, it's a better investment overall
@@RichyN25 That's way easier said than done. I am doing that currently. I have an 06 Explorer that I've maintained and worked on myself to keep it going, but its an uphill battle. Working on it takes time and money, and I don't have a ton of either. Plus I work 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. I don't have enough time or daylight to even really sit down and be able to do all the work I need to do.
It would be so much easier to have a newer, lower mileage truck that I can just hop into and drive, while hopefully just having to do fluid changes and regular maintenance, and not have to worry about vacuum leaks, mystery noises, rust etc.

I have an 86 C10, a 72 C30, and an 04 Honda I use as a grocery getter. When something breaks I have to fix it, sure it can take time, but that's why I have multiple vehicles, if one is down for repairs and it takes me a few weekends, I have other options, the C10 was $3500, the C30 was $2500 and is currently being rewired entirely, and the Honda was $800 and over the last 6 years all I've had to do to it apart from oil changes is just a timing belt/water pump

Dont buy any vehicle from a Dealer right now. Even more, dont buy from a dealer that had outrageously "market adjustment" ever again. There are dealers that didn't sell above MSRP, and there are dealer's that maybe added a few add-ons. Those are who we shoukd use after all this crap.

It's fixed. That was only on very early models. It's been fixed for a while now. People just love to dog pile on issues for every manufacturer. If Toyota has a problem with a new model, they usually get it remedied at the manufacturer level very quickly.

Todays prices are insane. I paid $38K out the door for a brand new 2019 TRD Sport that included a 125,000 mile extended warranty.

@Kevinselxer1669 don't say everyone loves the new Tacoma because that is downright bullshit I am not a fan of the fact that the new Tacoma 2024 is coming with a Turbo 4-cylinder I prefer the reliable 6-cylinder and there are many of us people that prefer the reliable 6 cylinder than the turbo-powered 4-cylinder that's going to last nowhere near as long as the traditional 6 cylinder.
And if you're buying one in the southeast, add another 4 grand because SE Toy Distr. add crap at the port that you can't opt out of. I own a 06 Taco, but the current tactic of adding packages I don't want has pushed me away from Toyota.
The new 2024 Tacoma will be 10,000 or more higher on the higher trim levels compared to the 2023 ones

When the rest of the auto manufacturers realize they don't need dealerships and sell direct to customers (a la Tesla), it will be a good day. Cut out the multiple middlemen, the price games, the slimy feeling you get after "working" with a salesperson and the overall sense of conflict and stick with posted pricing. That will regain a lot of lost trust.
It’s literally illegal in most states to sell directly. Tesla gets around it by being officially labeled a “technology company” instead of a car manufacturer. Politics buddy, it’s in almost everything. We’re going to have to vote away dealerships.

Why can't they make BASIC p/u trucks anymore. Oh, I know why, not enough price gouging. I have a basic Titan, crewcab and I bought it with two options because they were already installed. Plastic bedliner and that stupid bed extender but other than that it had A/C, radio, shift on the column, powr windows and locks. steel wheels, etc. I added after market stuff like a tow hitch and upgraded radio and floor mats, but that's it. This is ALL I need because I use it as a truck, haul dirt for the wife's garden, move stuff, etc.,etc. Who is going to put dirt in a 70,000 dollar p/u truck. I think they eliminated by design thousands and thousands of buyers who just want a basic truck (like a farmer, plumber, etc.) I will keep my truck forever for this reason even though I can afford a new one.

The sad thing is now that even if you want to buy a base model like that the price is still insane. Like on a 2500 or 3500 Ram with the cummins even if you get it super base you're still paying like $70k. So it's either $70k for nothing or $90k for a lot. Doesn't seem like a lot of difference when you're already paying $70k. Those are the games they play. I can't wait until they're so desperate they're like bud light and literally can't give the stuff away.

Things have gone insane in the car market since Covid. In March of 2020 (right before the pandemic blew up) I bought a brand new SR5 4Runner 4x4 for $33,915 OTD. Now that same truck is over $40k!! It seriously pisses me off.

I loved my old Toyota truck. It was an 86 bought new for $7400 . 4 speed and air was all I needed. I currently have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500. Starts every time I turn the key and I fix it myself just like my old Toyota. No way am I paying $50000 for a basic pickup.
I bought a 2018 SR5 Tacoma v-6 2W with the tech package and fog lights for $29,800 out the door, and the same vehicle today is $37,140 MSRP, meaning it would be $42,000 after doc, delivery, tax and tag. In five years, the same truck is up 30%. Hard pass.
Last time I visited my Toyota dealer searching for a pickup, they had an identical Army Green Tundra to the one shown in the last segment of the video. It was $78k. I'm in Northern Idaho and prices here are still stupid. Toyota dealer has 42 Tacoma pickups in stock. I have a sweet 2019 4Runner to trade in and cash to buy, but refuse to pay these crazy prices. The crash is coming and I will buy when I can get a new TRD Off-Road Tacoma for a few grand under MSRP.

The only thing I can say about the price differential is that the old models were V6s... these new ones are 4 banger turbos which many just might not want (I'm inclusive in that group). Otherwise, I like the new 23 Taco.
I dont like turbos either. I had a couple motorcycles, kawasaki vulcan 1600 from 2008 and a vulcan 2000 from 2008 and the 2000 got better fuel economy than the 1600
I had a 2022 V6 Tacoma that was the slowest vehicle I’ve ever owned. I got rid of it after just 4 months bc It was infuriating slow. I can’t believe anyone would buy a 4 banger truck.

These prices are definitely marked up. No question. However, the Tacoma has been this way for a long time. I got mine in 2020, but I was looking at them as early as 2017. Even in 2019/2020, a used '16 or '17 TRD Sport 2WD with 35k miles was still between $31k-$34k depending upon packages and condition where as the new equivalents were $38k-$40k. The Taco has always had insane used prices for whatever reason. While most other cars are economical to get used, the Taco, at least since I've been interested in getting one and since getting one, has always been a better deal to buy new.
These prices are too high right now, but the difference in price between used and new is still about par.
Surprisingly the small Toyota pickup Market has remained extremely strong for the last 25 years I have been watching it. It might not correct, anytime soon????
Taco is the best truck, worldwide. The Hilux is used everywhere. I had a 07 crew cab long bed v6. I loved it. The only complaint was the cab was a bit small for the price.
Good video and thanks for posting. I bought my 2021 TRD Off Road from Peterson in Boise in 2020 right before Covid. I put a deposit down and drove up from Reno-Tahoe to pick it up and the sales team was nice to work with. On the other hand the sales manager was completely RUDE and asked me why I drove up to Boise to buy a truck. I told him that my brother lived in Boise and Reno did not have a good selection. Love the truck and can't say much about that dealer. (Love the shirt!)

You are right that it makes sense to buy the new one over the used one but that's assuming the dealer is willing to sell the new ones at MSRP without market adjustments.
Exactly. My cousin in Sacramento CA went to get a new siyenna. MSRP $48k! Great price for top of the line minivan! But he got told straight up by the salesman to add $20k!!! on top(said market shortage adjustment) in order to get it, or go home. $68k + tax .. other dealer wanted $72k! for limited siyenna.. toyota is retarded as well, plus I personally would never choose or compare good class ram1500 or ford f150 with that trash tundra.. personal preference.

The conundrum some buyers have is old vs. new with reliability. Worth the risk? Why I bought a 23' 4Runner and did not wait for new model. Gave up features for over reliability. But it depends on person. I definitely will not knock those who buy new. Just comes down to preferences.

Anything after 2011 is complete garbage. Everything is electronic. No mechanical or hydraulic lines that are fixable. My 2012 forester was hydraulic but the engine suffered from oil starvation and I got a new motor 2 times before I sold it for an older toyota.
For most people having an engine that can last 1,000,000 miles probably isn't as valuable of a perk as often believed, considering that so much of the rest of today's vehicles are made of plastic & other cheap materials which will likely fall apart long before most would hit 300,000 miles.
lol million mile engine? Tacoma? Never going to happen. The 2GR-FKS was a reliability downgrade (sure seem to be a lot of 2016-17 Tacomas with blown engines over on TW). Between Toyota lowering their standard for oil consumption to a laughable 1 quart every 1200 miles being considered "normal" and their struggles with recent turbocharged engine designs, you will never be able to buy a 3rd gen or later Tacoma equipped with an engine capable of reaching a million miles.

I paid $29k for a used 4 door f-150 with 27k miles on it in 2011. These prices are insane. Mid size pickups going for over 40 grand. Even my 2020trd pro tundra which I thought was insanely expensive is average prices now for some of these trucks.
The 2011 is worth about 35% less than the 2023 dollar. In today's dollar, 29k is approximately 39.5k.

Hi. Nice videos. I watch frequently. I just had something to say, in reaction to something you said. 1st off, I'm a retired mechanic. I've been installing tires since they came in sizes like F7014, or G6015. If you aren't familiar with those, Google it, lol. On to my statement, there is nothing 'cheap' about those Bridgestone Duelers. They may be a non aggressive highway tread, but not a cheap, or lesser tire. Bridgestone has always been a fine quality tire.
We have a large Toyota dealership in metro Denver that charges straight MSRP on all new vehicles with 'zero' dealer add-ons and dealer fees. They have (76) 4Runners and (65) Tacomas in inventory. Several days ago they had (105) Tacomas, so it looks like there is still a good demand for the current gen before the 2024s come on line...
The same here for Wild Toyota in Milwaukee. All new vehicles at or below MSRP.

I had to replace a wheel bearing last year and recharge the Air Conditioner $23.00 from Walmart.
It's almost at 200K miles, so time for another timing belt and sparkplug change.

With the twin turbos. I have a 2020 F150. 3.5 Ecoboost. That has the twin turbos. The main turbo that will go out is on the driver side. On this systems. They took the PVC valve and dumped it into the turbo intake tubes. It's taking the oil bleed vapor off the engine and dirt feeding it into the turbos. What I did and a lot suggested it is. Putting in oil catch cans. I did my passenger side first. I left the driver side alone. Then. I started to have problems with the driver side. Then. I added the second oil catch can to the driver side. It cleared up the problem. It has to deal with the turbo gate. The oil out of the engine straight into the turbo. Takes out the turbo gate. Then. The oil burns up the turbos. I am just sharing.

@blackdogproductions2044 No one told me before I bought it. Here is what happened. My last truck had the junk 6.7L diesel or 6.5L. It was in a 2008 F350 King Ranch. 5 year loan. 4.6% interest. The lender was JPMORGAN. at the last 4 months of payments. I still had over $17,000 to pay on it. JP for no reason jumped up the interest rate to 15%. Making it a none ending loan. My way out was to trade it in and buy a new truck. I only needed a 1/5 ton. I wanted a Ford. That's what they said to buy, and they had it on the lot. I said okay. It came with everything. Fully loaded. Yet. Since I put the other oil catch can on it. Not bad. No more noise out of the turbo on the driver side. It's just over 15,000 miles on it. I can say, whoops. Yet. It has a lot of horsies under the hood. It leaves most behind. With the over size sway bars. I can take corners better than most. This truck flies.

I got a 2013 Silverado AND a 2016 Tundra last year for less combined than any one of those Tacos… these prices are nuts. I’ll take 4 less mpg and an 8’ bed for 25k less doll hairs…

From what I've read, the 24 Tacoma manual only comes with 4 doors which excludes the Prerunner.
It kinda sucks Toyota doesn't offer a full size diesel truck.

I used to work at a Toyota dealer and I never could figure out why anyone bought used if it was 3 years old or less. The price difference was usually only $1,500 for brand new....
What people did to BudLight ... needs to be done to the car market .... don't buy for 1 full year ... let them all sit on the lot !

This is a big impending problem. Small non-manufacturer dealerships are already dropping like flies right now because they have to go to outsourced financing for their customers and interest rates are too high. They have too much tied up in inventory that they have essentially overpaid for and no one is buying them. Car buying is slowing down and the people that are buying are moving towards manufacturer dealers because they have subsidized financing by the manufacturer.
Nice video! We just went to a Mitsubishi dealer yesterday, and they tend to be selling cars at, or slightly under MSRP which is nice. They had a Mitsubishi Mirage ES for $17,000.

The new 2024 Tacoma is also still offering the long bed option with the crew cab. GM doesn't think that's an important feature so they dropped it for both the Colorado and Canyon in 2024. If I'm thinking of trading my 2017 Chevy Colorado 4x4 crew cab long bed I'm going with the Tacoma just for that option alone. I do really like the two new GM midsize trucks but the short bed is a deal killer for me. As far as used prices go the Tacoma's have always been a few thousand more then the other midsize trucks.
Yep, I like the new GM twins also. But the fact that they ignore the main function of owning a truck (bed space) kills the deal for me also...
But let's be real, the majority of folks driving midsize trucks (and the people that the manufacturers market to) don't actually "need" or use their trucks for utility purposes.
@@randycupp5925 I went from a Nissan king cab Titan to a Colorado crew cab long bed. Pretty much same bed capacity with much better fuel economy. I haul a 13.7 ft fishing kayak so the little 5 ft beds don't work for me.
@@tomearly111 I 💯 understand. Those 5 foot beds are just long enough to be obnoxious. Soo many occasions when just having that extra foot means the difference of fitting a large object or having enough total volume to carry supplies/product in. I can't stand the way the short beds look either. Huge cabs with tiny beds just look silly!

New one has a turbo 4 an coil springs all around. Sounds like a car set up. They are at least keeping a manual transmission as an option. Im still going to end up buying used ones because i need my mid sized trucks to do truck stuff an i like to be able to row my own gears
The market makes it easy to love my truck. I got my '19 at the end of 2019 when the '20s were out. $33k for a manual offroad. The used ones were going for more than old new stock even back then. But now the prices are crazy for anythinf
Cool review, green tundra is nice over stock but dealers usually add the wheel pkg on the msrp when you sit down to buy, would be interested to know if we're extra $ 👍
Just ask them for the out-the-door price upfront. Of course, if you have a trade-in it's more complicated.
Forgive me, but it seems that the comparison is being made between Toyota and GM (Ford, GMC etc). The issue i see with that is that Tacoma is being compared to F150, for example. When really it should be compared to a Ranger. Tundra is more like F150 but still i haven't seen a Tundra being rugged as F150 can be. If we go higher like F250 then we see that Toyota has nothing comparable. Tacoma's are also very small, especially if you are 6' or taller. I'm 6'2" and in March when i rented one i couldn't see the stop lights because the windshield was too small. Considering how much Tacomas are nowadays, it's not that big of a jump to pay more to get more. So, to compare them more accurately, IMHO, price wise alone, Tacoma could be more expensive than a Ranger and Tundra is as expensive as F150. Considering the capability, off-road abilities, ruggedness, etc of F150 vs Tundra, most will go with F150. Only thing that Toyota has going for them is a better build quality but as you stated there are some issues on the new models as well. They sure don't build cars like they did 30-40 years ago.
You can compare price to price, segment leader to segment leader, or within segments. The great thing about f150 is that you can spec one out to almost anything you are willing to pay for, as long as you are willing to wait for them to build it. The question is, can you spec one out to be confident of Toyota -level reliability? That's up to you to decide, because only you know what "reliable enough" means to you. For me, at these prices, whatever I buy better be damn reliable, even if it means I won't get that bleeding edge dinosaur-themed race truck performance. Cheers.
That used Tacoma, is almost as expensive as my brand new 2023 TRD Sport 4x4. That seems to be the norm with Toyotas. Back when I bought my 2017 4Runner new, it was only a couple thousand dollars more then a used 2015 4Runner... So that's been going on at least since 2017.
My daily driver is a 1979 Ford F100, backup is a 96 Impala SS.
I'm on the fence about the new 2024. I've been holding out to upgrade from a Ram 1500 to see the 2024 reveal. I'm not a turbo fan nor a hybrid fan. I don't see the hybrid engine lasting the legendary mileage of 100k, 200k, 300k miles. I think these 2023's will not go down as much. Old school Tacoma loyalists will probably want the tried and true naturally aspirated engines.
The engine in the turbo/hybrid models will outlast the turbo only version. They are the same 2.4 turbo engine in both models, however with the hybrid system the electric motors assistance of the gasoline engine results in less overall stress on the gas engine. Your biggest concern is not going to be the ICE motor but the battery pack and all the electric components wiring etc...
Used vs new Tacoma prices have always been that way (just a few thousand dollars price difference). This is why I bought new instead of used back in 2015. They hold their value really well, which I why it's one of the very few vehicles that you're not going to be able to negotiate below MSRP. It's also why it actually makes sense to lease instead of finance if you plan on getting a different vehicle after the lease (you'll spend less and make more).
It seems like this is the way to go if you plan on not wanting to pay extra just to get into a new year. You buy into having a Tacoma at first, but when its time to trade in, your essentially Not spending anything at all

I only buy distressed vehicles the dealer needs to get rid of. My grandfather was a master car dealer for decades and taught all the tricks. The most important part of car buying is never buy upon first visit, even if you love the deal. Say you'll have to think about it in come back in 2-5 days. If you don't get a better deal, just move on. They make these vehicles every day and dealers have ones on the lot they need to unload. Take advantage of the need.
In some places it's law for them to show inventory sheets. Just pick the oldest vehicles

Yeah, except the suspension travel didn’t improve even on the wide track TRD Pro/Trail Hunter. They widened the track but didn’t correspondingly lengthen the control arms so the travel is way less than the completion. It’s fluff over substance.
In 2018 I purchased a 4-door trd off-road 4x4 Tacoma for 34,500 otd. The local dealer keeps sending me offer to “buy it back.” Carvana offer is 30,500. The truck currently has 62k miles. I thought about selling it, but with these prices, It’s not worth it.
Ive never liked the tacoma cuz its cramped for tall drivers. Im looking at Honda Ridgelines. I dont go off road and unless you plan to go off road it beats the taco in every way. I dont trust ford chevy or jeep cuz their reliability is inferior. Unfortunately Ridgeline inventory is super low everywhere and that was true before the pandemic. Honda doesnt sell alot of them so they just dont build alot of them, which is a shame cuz its an awesome truck (yes it is a truck) and if they put $ into marketing I think it could really jump in sales. Im worried theyre making a GM mistake where they dont maarket a product, so it doesnt sell,,,so it gets axed aka Buick Regal TourX as a recent example.

The RL is not a truck. It’s a car. It doesn’t hold up with hard use and doesn’t do well off road. The engine is held together with a flimsy timing belt. When the belt goes the engine blows.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q it does hold up to "hard use" had a bigger payload than the other midize offerings better mpg more inter volume etc. I dont plan to go off road and guess what, 99% of pickup drivers dont! And a timing belt is what toyotas had all through the 80s and 90s. Chaging it is every 100k scheduled maintinance. I talke that over a shitty chevy 3.6 dohc that has a timing chain that will strech and jump time.
A real truck has body on frame construction. Period.

In 2021, my mom wanted a Jeep Wrangler so we looked for used ones thinking it would be a better deal but went brand new because it was only a $2k difference in p4ice but 10k difference in mileage. New was the better way then and now apparently 😂

2016 1794 Tundra owner and I absolutely love it! 75k miles and just getting broken in. Love my V8 and will never go to the Turbo V6. Hoping Toyota will bring back the V8, but highly unlikely w/ big government regs. Sad. Great vid, thanks for sharing!
Yes it's the government banning gas engines. Not the consumer. The over inflated prices of these trucks are paying for the cheaper EVs and hybrids of the future

Tacos have been nuts for the last few years. I went to buy one last year and called 11 dealerships, 10 of them wanted at least $5000 OVER sticker and had no new ones in stock. I finally found a dealer who would do $3000 over sticker about 25 miles from my house and had one coming in soon so I jumped on it. I will be driving this baby for the next 20 years, they can keep all that dual turbo 4 cylinder crap, I will be keeping my tried and tested V6.
“Super Unreliable Engine” is an absurd statement considering we’re 15 months into this engines life cycle

I have a nice Sennheiser mic on camera. Lol. When pointing the camera away from me it muffles the sound from back of mic. Working on better solutions. Thanks.

Just watched again. At 6.56 I can see your reflection and mic in the window. What about tying to talk into the side of it and then turning your eyes to where you are looking. At the moment the sound waves are flying right past it!
