Another fabulous interview! Ms de Courcy is someone whom one could listen to for hours on end without losing interest for a single moment. I do hope she has kept copious notes on her own life. She would be able to make recent history palatable to even the most errant school child. More please. xxx
Loved this second interview as much as the first, more , please! Here's a subject suggestion for Anne ; Lord Dawson of Penn - serial killer to the aristocracy and serial Regicide. Poem recited in UK Parliament - Lord Dawson of Penn has killed many men, That's why we sing God Save The King.
Fascinating interview. Very few of Anne de Courcy’s generation and ilk remain. Have you considered interesting Lady Pamela Hicks? Outside of her daughter, India, I don’t know if she grants interviews. Lady Anne Glennconner might though.
Ah! Anne de Courcy is such a breath of fresh air in this pea-soup-fog of a world we currently inhabit. Sharp and sensible and of course her subjects are so well researched. Adored both of her interviews. Thanks for your brilliant podcasts!
Enjoyed this one thanks chaps! Always late to the party here down under. I’ve read The Mitford Sisters so am quite au fait with Moseley & Diana Milford’s relationship but knew nothing of his marriage to a daughter of Lord Curzon. It’s certainly a fascinating period in British history. Not that British history ever fails to disappoint on that score. Even quite recently. Just finished watching The Rise & Fall Of Boris Johnson. I could see him feeling right at home in 1930’s Britain.
What a great podcast , so good that I listened to it twice ! I save your podcasts , and then listen to them while I'm walking my dogs in the park , it's perfect 🙂
I don't imagine there are many people in this world who are as intelligent, knowledgeable and eloquent as Anne. I was so happy to see her back on the show.
It’s a wonderful thing to capture women’s memories. In a certain era, they had a key perspective. Women were meant to decorative, the most interesting are those women have interesting things to share. Spirited, and full of fulfilling fffffs.
Not your average drivel…..the best comment ever. Glad you agree. And I will confirm anytime, that your podcast is way (!!!) above average every time. I am so happy I found it. For years I wished I had someone, who would recommend books to me, that I want to devour in one go. That is not a problem any more. The books I got since I started listening to you, are piling up. Thank you! So now I am off to check out which books from Anne I need to get. What an interesting Lady. The only bad thing I have to say is, that the interview should have lasted a few more hours.
What a lovely lady. Morals of alley cats the well born have. Please get her back for the Fishing Fleet I would love to hear about that. Also I am hoping Andrew is working on that book on Prince Philip, I want warts and all. The public has an opinion on him as having a rude side and suspect he was having affairs (with creepily young people too).
After thoroughly enjoying the latest podcast with Anne, I picked up my copy of Tom Driberg : His Life and Indiscretions by Francis Wheen. When he arrived at Oxford, he bought himself a pair of Oxford bags - silly clothing made popular by the notorious aesthete Harold Acton. Bright green and extraordinarily baggy. Well, a group of fifteen or so Bullingdon Club types went charging up Tom's staircase in Peckwater Quad one night , howling his name . Within minutes they were torn from him and paraded around the quad and then cut up into strips and finally hung up in the Junior Common Room. Cruel. Great to have a Scandalous Monger's Podcast on these Oxbridge Clubs. Bullingdon sounds intriguing. 😮
I enjoyed listening to Anne’s fascinating peek of a bygone era. Fruity, Bubba, Simi, philandering for England, fox hunting, Wallace, Hitler … my goodness the 30’s must have been the most extraordinary of times.
I was so excited to see this video as I’ve read all of Anne de Courcy’s books and highly recommend them all. I’d love to see her write a book on Lord Curzon.
I adore Anne's matter of fact, no nonsense presentation sprinkled with delicious quips. I totally agree that many were drawn to Hitler in the early days due to the theatrics and pageantry of the live 'performances' - lighting, music and visuals which would put todays reality shows to shame! Thank you Anne! You should consider getting SueMe on your show. She has an interesting UA-cam channel with various topics but does a lot of Harry and Meghan stuff. Andrew - both her Aunts knew Wallace Simpson which I think you may find interesting. Also, will you get Norman Baker on at any point?
I'm still catching up with some of the older shows - watched the PROFUMO one earlier!!!! Blew me away!!! How many overlapping tentacles in most of these shows?! Fascinating ❤ I really enjoy Norman Baker and will watch him now x *Another good guest would be forensic psychiatrist Dr. SOHOM DAS (on A PYSCH FOR SORE MINDS). Youngish and eloquent who is a friend of your buddies Andrew - he has been on Shaun Attwood's channel several times and has also done several shows with Andrew Gold. The SCANDAL MONGERS have (mostly) historical and political backgrounds to many of your stories - perhaps a psychological discussion as to many of the recurring themes would be insightful. I'm pushing it a bit to suggest GRAHAM HANCOCK - it would be like an interview with a DEMI GOD😅 - but his wife Santha is a remarkable photographer and accompanies him on many of his exploratory trips. She would be a fascinating guest, too! Xxxx
I like how you give the interviewees the time to talk and let their stories breathe. You also now have developed the understanding of when to let the appropriate co-host ask the relevant question. Long may it continue.
Hi Phil , we have London weather forecast today, rainy and miserable ( BTW Shoghig is Armenian female name married to an Irishman from NI , sadly he passed away im sure he would have loved to listen to your podcast
Crazy, amazing stories told by such a pleasanat teller 😀 (and great interviewers as usual 😊) On that kind of subject, I'd like that an episode would somehow tackle the birth control issue. I really wonder how in the past that upper class and their multiple relationships dealt with that issue. Serial abortions? Coitus interruptus? Anything else? I doubt there is much information on that subject but I really wonder... 🤫
It’s lovely that these biographers & historians give us a glimpse into these privileged, wealthy & over indulged aristocrats who are deep down, common, hypocrites, vulgar and above all truly ordinary.
Darn it 😮 I measure my blood pressure to Andrew's sonorous and plummy tones (always good for dropping the numbers a unit or two 😅)...and then pop off for tea n cake with your happy- chappy (and Frances x) jolly vibes Phil!!! Now I'll just have to have double portions of cake due to Andrew skiving off around Scotland!!! I've been catching up on some of your earlier work and am really impressed! Hi, just tuning in , loved the podcast with Peter Pomerantsev , I left a comment on that podcast 👍, as I have only joined your Subscriptions recently I am really enjoying going back to viewing your past work , Can I make an suggestion about interviewing Bill Browder ?? Great Guy in my opinion love from Ireland ☘☘
Anne makes a very important point that restraints can cause people to behave differently. I have often thought about the anger that Price Phillip, King Charles and Prince William have displayed would be quite normal given the restraints and mapping out of one's life. I think history has shown that some just can't adjust to that. An American perspective. Or, just mine😂
Thank you once again. Essential listening for Sunday lunch prep. This subject conjures up a Harry Enfield type skit about an aristocratic version of the Jeremy Kyle show in my mind. Wonderful guest again. It's odd how simply relating a story can be seen as endorsement or criticism of the people in it. I think we're quite forgiving towards the Persians for not having an air force, but we're more critical towards our predecessors for their lack of philosophical ideas that have since emerged and we now might hold dear. I think it's more about us trying to tell ourselves we're better people than we were before than anything else.
After Ann’s book Snowden, I’ll be sure to peek behind the heavy drapes & brown shirts of its time. The Royals, Wallace, Hitler, and Mosley are stories of biblical proportions. Andrew Lownie got to the heart of the matter, with a couple of pertinent Q’s. Well done Scandal Muck Rakers 👏👏👏
I imagine that the 30’s being a hop, skip and a jump forward from Victorian tight morality were actually mostly about taking no notice of the old order. It seemed to be taken as a right. My own parents, even though not from aristocratic circles didn’t let that little problem stop them. As a child there still loads of rules which were bandied about…think of ‘no divorce’ for Royalty in our own times. Most enlightening and interesting.
No way 97, I would’ve said 77, maybe 87. Anne is remarkable and in the same league as the late Queen; hardworking, stoic, intelligent and innocently witty. They will never make them like that again and sadly we are losing first hand memories of the war time era.
