- G'day all MrPaladin here.
Much to the surprise of the server I played a game on an Aussie server recently. My latency was fine but I had a ping 200+ so I thought it would be good to do a video about what you can do to cope as a spy with a high ping.
From the video, here are the commands that were mentioned...
You can use "net_graph 3" in the ingame console to check your stats in a game session and then put in "net_graph 0" to hide it.
cl_cmdrate 66 (If this doesn't work match the servers tick rate 66 is default or set it to your fps. adding a "+" infront of your value such as +66 but does NOTHING for your ping)
cl_updaterate 66 (If this doesn't work match the servers tick rate 66 is default or set it to your fps.)
cl_interp 0 (This is interpolation. It is represented as "lerp" if you look at your net graph in TF2. You can set it from 0 to 1, based on your ping. 1 is default in TF2. If you have a bad connection, increase it from 0. ex: .033)

Dude, back in 2010 when I started playing video games, and even up until 2013 when I had to stop due to cirumstance, 100 ping was perfectly acceptable, average, and in some cases even considered GOOD.
Having 65-80 ping was 'friggen sweet' and anything less than 50 ping was in the 'godlike' tier.

Yeah. I was born when it came into vogue. And unfortunately, I'm in too rural of an area to use 4G LTE feasibly, so I'm stuck with a shitty 46K modem. I only get one to two bars of cell service around my house; mostly the former, and the rest of time I don't get any service whatsoever because my siding is aluminum, and metal in general is notorious for blocking cellular and radio signals. 3% of the world population and I'm one of the unlucky blokes to be stuck with it against my will. Frickin' ridiculous.

TF2 is too old for its own good, 100 ping is a lot worse there than in other games.

Hey Mr Paladin ive been subbed for about 6 months and i actually quit tf2 for a few months but stayed subbed to u. One day i chose to watch a vid of urs and i was like "hey maybe i should try playing tf2 again." And on that day I got a 10 killstreak as a spy with many trickstabs. I didnt even know where it came from lol. My inner Mr P came out of me and I top scored as spy. Haha. Thanks for making vids, keep it up.

Thankfully valve opened servers here in brazil, so now I can play tf2 with very low ping. Well... now to find a better internet provider that doesnt make its cable of sugar.

+Mr.Paladin Fun fact about the source engine, most of the time older computers (to a point) actually run tf2 faster because tf2 uses resources different and sends less optimized coding that older computers are meant to do and thus handle them faster

I do, but it's super hard to find the maps I want with how few Sydney servers there are. I love pl.Borneo, but there's only ONE Sydney server running pl.Borneo at any given moment, tops. Seriously Valve, please just make a new server in New Zealand. Is that to much to ask?

Most internet delays are actually from routing; A direct connection from one house in US to another in Australia would have VERY low delay, but would be inefficient in wire usage. This is why you have to route through more routers the farther you go.
An analogy for this could be with driving:
Going 1 mile with 1000 stoplights for turners in between would be just as slow as going 200 miles with no stoplights.
Making a road to go directly (without stops) from America to Australia would reduce intersection delays, but would be very limited in with no intersections would be quite fast, but would have limited use of who that road can help and probably would not be worth the money of constructing said road. Making a road that branches off very often would be more efficient by reducing the need for direct roads.
Hopefully this helps your understanding.

well, you did a good job explaining ping, if you have a slow connection like me and live far away from any server running the game, I recommend using Netlimiter, you can set all your currently running processes to use a maximum of like 5Kb/s which I use, It will help you get better ping

90-100 ping is fine. My usual problem is packet loss, which causes client prediction glitches. Usually when that happens, I just play as engie because even if I'm lagging out, the sentry is handled server-side and doesn't miss.
Once as an Engineer I literally hung out in the intel room in TF2 and saw my self and I didn’t even know spies could take names, so I just thought: “Did you change your name to mine?” I was dumb and new.
There's a bug that I discovered with enemy spies with high ping. The animation will not play correctly, enemy spies uncloaking with high ping will just appear as soon as their client side animation has finished.
I think this is more of a "PSA" than a "How A Spy Thinks" Video. Still, it is good and informative.

Mr paladin, as a fellow spy main, I want to ask, do you also have any issues playing spy on ctf maps like 2fort and turbine (aka smaller maps). I tend to have issues with ctf with some maps. I do believe there's a reason why due to a few reasons. ctf tend to be either very open, where there isn't many objects to obscure you to help in hiding, like double cross, or have very closed in areas where there isn't much room to move in, like turbine, with most of the map consisting of either small hallways or vents. some maps even have both of these issues, like 2fort, where the bases have long narrow halls and closed in rooms, and open and noticeable, with the bridge being the only route besides going into the water, but going through there leaves you with little to no escape, which leads me to my next issue. ctf maps are like mirrors. each side is the exact same, or more specifically, built the same. with the maps built like this, it gives you little options in escape. going into an enemy base leaves you with little options in where to go. each area is always going to be guarded for most of the time, and with these ctf maps being linear, there is only a couple of entrances to take. though some maps have more routes, they all eventually lead to the same one or two doors. here in lies the last problem. in ctf maps, there will be many people in one area at a time, and with the small space and few routes to take, it leaves you almost helpless. and there's also issues with the watches. with the invis watch, you need to have room to dodge, which isn't there, and because people usually stay in their base, there isn't many health or ammo packs to use, so you have little chance of staying unnoticed, but then there's the cloak and dagger, where true you don't need metal to stay invisible, you need to stop moving every so often to regain that cloak. now that may not seem to bad, but there's the issue of standing still. you'll need to be able to move out of the way of people who may bump into you, but because of the small space and large player count, you'll more than likely get caught. and don't even get me started on the dead ringer. no matter where you are, they will hear that decloak. so there it is, why I find ctf to be not impossible, but slightly difficult, in most cases, to play spy in most ctf maps. there are some occasions when it's easy, like if your team is getting pushed back, there's more room behind them to be in, or if there's not that many people, but on ctf, that's not a common occurrence. Mr. paladin, do you have any issues with ctf maps from time to time

As paladin noted how you can improve your frame rates by lowering graphics I suggest looking up how to install Chris's max frames or Comanglia' frames config. They both help immensely in the fps department.

Hey Mr.P! So, I have a question for you. See, I live in Mongolia, and there are no servers near me. So, I usually connect to a server in EU, where I get around 130 ping. I've been playing like this for about 8 months now, and I've gotten used to it. So, my question is, is 130 ping viable in TF2?
Mr.Paladin i have something say about one of your comments so could you clarify what counts as close to the server. at 7:10 you mention extremely low pings such as 1-10, you said that the person needs to be close. i live in Mississauga Canada and on Virgina servers i get around 8-11 pin. What counts as close?
other than stabby stabby, mr paladin is the only other youtuber that mains spy. stabby stopped youtube, so i have gone here for help, advice, tips and gameplay

Lately, Valve's public server system seems intent on sending me to servers in either Belgium, Sweden or Australia. Meanwhile, here I am sitting roughly outside of New Haven, CT, on a wired connection with a preference for servers in Virginia or other parts of the U.S. Drives me crazy.

If latency is mostly effected by the distance between you and the server, why do I get (at times) well above 1000 ping connecting to a server for instance in Seattle which is only about 1000 km away from where I live (I live in Canada, Alberta) which is really not far for internet. This happens to me on console (xbox one) ALOT and most recently when I was playing TF2 on my computer (I was connecting to a server in Seattle). Now 1000 and above ping makes makes any and every game unplayable, on tf2 I couldn't move (it just teleported me around and didn't even let me shoot) in other games nothing will register and you will miraculously be shot when you are far behind cover (possibly in the next building).
You won't believe how many times my life has been saved because of my low ping. I live in Arkansas, so Texas servers are my saviors when I wanna play certain maps.
My level 3 sentry will keep my unlocked door safe!
For some reason whenever I connect to a local server, my ping is ~20-30 but the scoreboard locks it to 5 but whenever I connect to a foreign server, my ping just flies up, weird stuff, I also noticed that I'm not the only guy with this problem, seems to be a source/ISP problem. So, not everyone with a locked 5 ping is masking .-.
Also, Mr P, do you intend on playing Overwatch?
Melee in this game is very broken for how its setup. I don't know why melee isn't its own hit detection. I've also noticed that sometimes net_graph 1 and what the scoreboard says my ping is are different numbers. There are instances where running 190 ping is just fine for me. This could be fixed by adding more server locations and by adding a search field for the servers closest to you.

example:playing on close servers,no its not lag,no my pc isnt shit,no my internet isnt shit either,was playing tf2 for a loong time but only recently I started just randomly freezing (fps 1) then (back to 58-60)

I see so many players in pubs with 300-400 ping, and they seem to always be playing aim-reliant hitscan classes like Scout or Sniper.
I don't know how they do it. I can barely play Soldier or Heavy when my ping's above 100.
So you need to have low ping to play good in sniper right?
So trickstabs are made possible by lag or hitbox issues? So if valve were to fix this. Trickstabs would be way harder to pull off?

hey MrPaladin, is there a way too remove a antivirus? i got a new computer with windows 10 and it has a expired mcaffe antivirus and its taking a good chunk of my cpu and i cant remove it because it says i cant edit those files and i checked the website and found nothing, any idea how too remove it? (i checked taskmanager and it wont let me end task it does nothing)

hey paladín u know that trickstab of turn in a corner i do 5 of them in a row 2 normals and 3 facestabs and 2 extras
To add to this. If the lag is really bad but for whatever reason you still want to play. Try engineer. Sentries are server-side so they have no ping, meaning all you have to worry about is the server realising that you're hitting it with a wrench to heal it.
Combine that with the fact the wrench also swings like the spy knife with no delay on its fire and you got a combination that can do well. Teleporter and Dispenser placement have no ping requirement for team support. There is also no ping requirement for observing the flow of the game to know when to push a supporting sentry forward.
Mr Paladin, how do you deal with a good pyro (ex: Pyro Main) . . . Do you shoot him with your revolver and hope that he doesn't burn you to death first, or Attempt a trickstab and hope that the pyro does airblast? Or do something else? For sake of argument, lets say you are in the range of the flamethrower.
also, cuz he IS a good pyro, lets assume he knows how to use his other weapons, (Melee, Flare gun, Shotgun, etc)
Quantum Entanglement WILL NOT reduce the time delay between servers. No information can travel faster than the speed of light. quantum computing is better than standard computing at high density integer computation. The reason is, while the states between two points may change instantly, we have no communication between them and need a outside signal to learn what the others state is, and therefore knowing the output. It simply has an exponential bit size of 2^n
