Galveston Travel Tip: Take the Bolivar Ferry and see the City from the water for free! Stay to the right if approaching by car and follow signs for walk-ons. You can bypass the traffic and walk on with no wait. Ride across to Bolivar and then stay on the same boat to return. Great views of the island, ship traffic and lot's of dolphins. We do it every time.
The Ferry is the best ride in Texas. And if you go off season things close early. Go peak season and it's party all night. Also, there is a BSL4 research lab that has most of America's Ebola samples and all the Zika.
I am only commenting this because this means a lot to me and this bit of history has pretty much been forgotten. The pleasure pier is not historic, the hotel "The Flagship" used to be there. that was for the longest time after its construction the only hotel in the world over the water. It tragically partially collapsed during hurricane IKE, and then was bought out by Tillman Fertita who built the pleasure pier. Thanks for coming to visit us in Galveston, I enjoyed this video.
I’m a 77 year old BOI and remember the historic pleasure pier well. It was built in the 1940’s as a recreational pier for the military during WW2. It was the venue for Miss Mellen’s dance recitals for many years and also for the presentation of the Jr MardiGras after WW2, which I was part of in 1948. It underwent many changes after that and after Hurricane Carla destroyed much of the island and the pier in 1961, the pier structure was restored and the Flagship hotel was built on it. In fact, I had my wedding reception in that hotel ball room in June 1968. Hurricane Ike destroyed the Flagship and much of the pier and the vision of Tillman Fertitta and Landry’s brought back the Pleasure Pier to its original intended purpose. I love my island home, no longer live there but visit as often as can. Enjoy!
@@diane1270 I stand corrected. I only ever knew of the flagship hotel on that pier. I had no idea thier was anything before the flagship. Thank you diane for your beautiful story and lesson I will not soon forget. In this case the historic pleasure pier is correct and I thought i knew difderently. Thank you diane.
Excellent video. Loved your footage, educational dialogue, pacing. Thanks for posting it. Im in Galveston and didn’t do any research prior to coming - your video is the best of the dozen I’ve watched so far. Thank you!!
😂 Barbacoa is not pulled pork, nor is it brisket. Barbacoa is beef cheek meat (and it is delicious!). Galveston is a great place. It is our home-away-from-home. It's a shame you missed Moody Gardens. It is incredible! I hope you enjoyed your stay! Thanks for the video!
The menu had it listed as beef brisket so maybe it just isn't true barbacoa! We had a great time. We'll definitely have to go back for Moody Gardens. There's too much to do in a day!
@travelfuller that's quite possible, but they should just sell it as a brisket omelet. 😁 There are so many great places to eat in Galveston, we overeat every time we're there! If you ever go back, try Gaidos, Katy's, Number 13 Steakhouse, Black Pearl...oh there's just too many to mention. Thank you again for the video!
Thanks! I just got back from a 24 hour visit to Galveston. I went to pleasure pier, Moody, Gardens, and the oil rig museum. I went to the old Timey ice cream shop downtown too.
Great video ! My only question is how did you manage to fly your drone in those areas since they are restricted and DJI won’t allow flying near moody gardens and west of the pleasure pier. FAA says zero altitude allowed when I try to fly in those areas.
Thanks! That's weird, I have a DJI drone as well and had no problems. I checked AirMap before flying and the area was not restricted at the time but now it looks like it is. I think the small airport there used to be Class G airspace but is now Class D and requires FAA authorization
A Barbacoa omelet has Barbacoa it in, not pork. In the U.S., barbacoa is often prepared with parts from the heads of cattle, such as the cheeks. In northern Mexico, it is also sometimes made from beef head, but more often it is prepared from goat meat (cabrito). If you want followers to trust you, make sure your information is correct, or stick to what you know, NY.
This was a mistake, hence why we added the asterisk here 3:58. We know barbacoa is not traditionally brisket either, but that's taken straight from their menu: thesunflowerbakeryandcafe.com/breakfast-brunch-menu/
Galveston and it's beaches are a nice place. People love to take a big dump on Galveston and it's beaches, i.e., they're nasty, dirty, don't compare to California, Hawaii, Florida, etc, etc...or obviously not as pretty and cool as South Padre Island, but it's not that bad. Galveston beaches are not top tier, but they are not as shitty as people make them out to be. Galveston is a beautiful historical town, and the beaches are OK, nice enough. The breeze makes it cool, even in the summer months, much cooler than the rest of Texas.
So, is it always slow to include the weekends? No nightlife, everything closes early? It looks nice, but... Where are the ppl? Looks kind of dead. Thnx for your video.
We happened to be there on a Monday so it was a lot quieter than it would normally be. We've been told that if you go on a weekend or day a cruise ship comes to town it is much busier!
On The Weekends the Island is Totally Packed with tourists and crowds of happy people with lots of nightlife party's festuvals and dancing Down on the strand and the West End marina as well. the minute Monday arrives all is quiet.
Monday during winter months is very quiet on the island. Everything is very busy during holidays, spring break, summer months and Dickens on the Strand. Even during the quiet months there is plenty to do.
@@travelfuller Oh thank you. However my husband and daughter are living in El Paso just 100 yards from the border and I live in Lexington VA taking care of my mother. But Galveston was fun while it lasted.
Thank you so much for stopping by -Baywatch Dolphin Tours😊
We had a great time!

That's awesome, congrats! There are so many amazing old homes, it seems like the perfect place for a flip

Did y'all have to book the Dolphin Tour or is it like a walk-in kind of thing?
We booked it a few days before, but people were booking it when we were checking in. I think it was a little cheaper online though!
@@travelfuller thanks for letting me know!

Galveston is on my bucket list!
it's worth it. There's also a Dickens cosplay event in December when it's still warm.
This video is beautifully made. What kind of camera did you guys use?
Thanks! We primarily shoot on the Sony a7 IV and the DJI Air 2s
Star Drug is our favorite breakfast place
We loved it! Highly recommend
Interested in trying this restaurant
@@katieludwicki8676 You definitely should. They’re open from 8:30-about 2. My brother & I eat there for roughly $35 at breakfast
I like love this place, I am from Brazil, I have wish of go work in Galvestone!
glad you enjoyed it. pyramids + pier worth it! i watched them build them. try the Ellisa next time.
We loved it! Yes, we unfortunately just didn't have the time but next time for sure!

This series has to culminate in a cruise, right??
We wish! We went on our honeymoon instead. Some videos from French Polynesia will be coming soon!

The weather was terrible when we were there since it was the offseason so we unfortunately didn’t get to enjoy the beach, but it looked beautiful!
What month were you there? Catching a cruise in February
We were there in March. Have a great trip!
Thank-u, do you know if anything is open in February?
I’m not sure but I would think so, everything was open when we were there. Some things just had shortened hours
Thank-u for answering my questions.
Original Mexican Cafe is the top TexMex on the island IMO.
Looks amazing! Thanks for the recommendation

The Flagship was built in 62 - 63 after Hurricane Carla. Before that it was the Coca Cola Pleasure Pier, built in 1948. So it is historic.
Don’t go looking for the granola yogurt bowl at The Sunflower. We biked 8 miles just to get that and it’s no longer on the menu. So disappointing.
Oh my gosh I’m so sorry! That’s so annoying, I wonder why they would take it off the menu
I MISS LIVING THERE WITH MY FAMILY. WE HAD TO LEAVE BECAUSE OF HURRICANE HARVEY.
I’m so sorry to hear that. Hope you get an opportunity to go back someday

I was also confused when she added an "elle" to the Taquilo's name. There is only one "l" there.
I never heard anyone call Galveston Beach beautiful. The water has 0 visibility and beach “sand” is a fine grit that is nasty . YUCK!
But it's the sand I know. And many Atlantic beaches are similar
