I think you're right that the meaning of a poem DOES matter. I think the speaker is concerned about the MANNER of reaching meaning - it is great to engage with the poem in order to infer its meaning, to puzzle it out through engagement or to let its meaning wash over you like the splashes while you waterski! What the speaker does not like is when people try to bludgeon meaning from a poem, using the blunt instruments that they have in their tool box like torturers rather than like artists...
Same could be said of abstract modern art. People are often too caught up in finding meaning in a work and miss the visual treasures it has in of itself.
