RCF HDM 45 Speaker - No Subwoofer needed for Mobile DJ's??

  • Thanks for watching my review and experience with the RCF HDM 45 15" Speaker! I bought these speakers as a Mobile DJ in hopes that I could use two of them and still get subwoofer level bass. I ended up learning a lot about sound instead! Is this is the best speaker out there for mobile DJ's??
    Let me know if your thoughts about bass when it comes to speakers! I'd also appreciate any feedback from any HDM45 users about the troubleshooting points I mentioned in the video.

    I've had these for a couple of years and haven't had any issues or white noise . FYI, the power con is designed to have the blue connector plugged in before you connect actual live power.
    Sequence for powering on should be:
    1. Connect blue connector.
    2. Connect live power to outlet
    Sequence for powering off:
    1. Disconnect power from outlet
    2. Disconnect blue connector.
    What do you have the gain set to? I typically run my gain on the HDM 45 at 15. Proper gain staging will reduce the hiss you hear. Are you using an external mixer or connecting straight from your mixer/controller to the speakers? I run my setup off an Allen and Heath Zed 10 FX. I have the Main Mix Level set to Unity, and use the PFL to set the Gain from my Rane One to where it bounces into the greens. Then adjust your sound level needed on the Channel Level.
    This guy here has a good tutorial on proper gain staging.
    ua-cam.com/video/J_yOvdlMUAg/v-deo.html
    Also use the built in the DSP Presets for your room. Small room I typically change it to C1 for close listening, it cuts the highs. For deep long throws, I change the setting to F1 for Far listening, you will get more throw on the highs. Set the DSP and walk around the room to see if you like the sound and adjust from there. The L4 setting will get you more bass but you will reduce headroom. As you stated, subs do a better job since they are typically on the ground and you get additional bass from the boundary of the floor. Hope this helps.

      Wow thank you so much for this comment! These are amazing tips, and I will start using these immediately. I definitely did not know about the sequencing for powering on and off, and will try that next time for sure.
      I do use a mixer, however, I had the HDM 45 set at 0.0 previously. That’s great to know that you set them much lower at 15 and do not hear any of the white noise or hissing sound. I think that could be contributing to why I am having the issue and I will try that as well!
      I had tried the presets previously like you had described, but I did not know that the L4 preset gave extra bass!
      Thank you again so much for taking the time to share all these amazing tips, and I can’t wait to try them out at my next event, and see if it helps the issues I was having. Thank you!

    Hey I’ve had the rcf hdm45 for about 2 years now and they are one of the loudest top I ever had. However my previous tops was the JBL SRX835p and that you definitely won’t need a sub but being 85 lbs is the reason I sold it. As far as limiting on the rcf I’ve pushed mines really hard with no issues. The yellow is just a soft limiter. Rcf has so much protection built into that thing. If your in need of subs look into the Bose sub 2 for portability you’ll thank me later. 2 of those I think is equal to 1 rcf 8004 😊

    • @MrMaui38
      @MrMaui38  7 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching and the comment! Wow man 85 lbs is no joke haha this is much more manageable! That's really great to know about the yellow being just a soft limiter and makes me feel a lot better. I haven't/ needed to push them that hard yet, but maybe I'll try now haha
      Yess wow what a coincidence, I was actually looking into the Sub 2 a couple days ago!! At 50 lbs each, they seem super convenient, yet still powerful. How many do you take to an event to pair with your HDM45s? Also, do you mount the HDM45 on the Sub2 with a sub pole, or do you just use with the HDM45 on a separate speaker stand?

    • @DJRIKSTA
      @DJRIKSTA 7 місяців тому

      @MrMaui38 yeah so for my bigger parties I actually use one hdm45 with 2 rcf 8003mk2 subs. For my smaller events I have one of the bose L1 Pro 16 and its amazing for what it is. But I think you should try 1 sub2 first and you want more then get a second one. Two bose sub2 is equal to about 1 big 18 inch rcf sub. If you with two sub2 you can stack them laying down then with a pole put the hdm45 on the top.
      Believe it or not the bose L1 pro 16 gives a better throw and wide disperse (180 degree) for music it's crystal clear and bass is amazing for the size. The line array design helps alot. But the hdm45 is louder in front of the speaker. All depends what your looking for.

  • @Emvkazama

    I got the RCF 945a and they are a monster of speakers. The bass is there but I always set it up with subs. The reason is sound quality. I had the opportunity to dj next to other DJs that don't use subs and 95% of the time people prefer how my system sounds. So don't sacrifice spud quality just because you don't want to carry a subwoofer.

    • @MrMaui38
      @MrMaui38  10 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching! Sound wise I agree that there is no replacement for subs, no matter how powerful or expensive your tops are! What size subs do you use with your 945s? I've looked into smaller 12 inch subs to cut down on weight, but don't know if they would just be totally overpowered by the tops and I’d need something bigger anyways.

    • @francescog53550
      @francescog53550 8 місяців тому

      @@MrMaui38there is no such a thing as the subs being smaller than the tops. With 2 HDM 45 you need at least 2 expensive 18 inch to keep up. But even with the sub at max volume you would have the tops turned way down to get a balanced sound. I’m not exaggerating, The HDM 45 used with an highpass filter perform at its best with a dual 18 inch sub for each one of them :)

    • @MrMaui38
      @MrMaui38  5 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching! I havent heard the HDM35 but from what I know, this HDM45 is louder because it has that bigger horn on the top. The horn will also take some of the mid range frequencies, allowing the woofer on the HDM 45 to produce more bass. Also the HDM 35 is heavier (only a little bit however), so I was trying to avoid that.

  • @HelderOliveira-bl2xg

    Also is there any RCF speaker that would work well In a 35 sq meter room without the need of a sub? I'm a bedroom DJ who plays mainly house & techno and I'll be throwing the occasional party with 20 people max. Thanks bud

    • @MrMaui38
      @MrMaui38  5 місяців тому

      Honestly for that setup, even if you got just one of the RCF EVOX 8 speakers, that would be enough! You can even get two of those and you could cover most small events up to 100 people. Maybe even max 150! And aesthetics wise they look nicer which would be nice in a house party setup! These HDM series are better for versatility say you may be taking them out to large events and spaces where you need the sound or vocals to travel far, but if youre not thinking to use them that way, a small column array like the EVOX 8 is perfect!

  • @EnormeSounds
    @EnormeSounds 11 місяців тому +1

    I heard you can’t go wrong with RCF, however I have the QSC K12.2 and I think it provides a significant amount of bass. They are a little lighter than the RCF model you have.
    Do you plan to stick with RCF or are you still trying out other speakers?

    • @MrMaui38
      @MrMaui38  11 місяців тому

      Definitely cant go wrong! I think the bass is comparable amongst those speakers like the QSCs, JBLs, RCFs etc to the audience ears and in the end don’t replace subs. There may be some small difference, but i don’t think it’s enough for people in the audience to be able which is what matters in the end to me
      I probably won’t be looking at other box speakers other than the RCF I have, but my next purchases might be the column arrays by RCF or LD,. They bring the bass in a portable package when the goal isn’t to cover a huge area! These HDMs really do a great job of throwing sound and covering large areas and venues with the high and mids, which columns I’ve heard can’t do. Thanks for watching!!
