That makes sense as a lot of the time the viewer who loves short form, especially 7 seconds long is not that much interested in long-form videos. And many viewers interested in long-form videos are not that interested in short videos, especially under 30 seconds. Two different viewers. I made over 150 shorts and saw my channel income crash while viewership and subscriber count skyrocketed. When I saw how my average retention on my long-form videos went down I removed my shorts and slowly my channel is recovering again. It may work for some channels, but I think for many it may be best to have two separate channels for long and short-form videos until youtube has figured out how to mesh the two audiences properly.
I watch nearly every high-effort video to the end. It’s just a matter of respect for the creator.

When I started making videos a month ago my Retention Rate was at 12%. It’s been going up a little more every time. Last video hit above a 21% Retention Rate. Hoping to have my latest be even higher. It’s all a learning process though.
How is it doing now? I've been a bit frustrated with how it has started off for me in my first month, getting an average of only 10.5% retention.
I've only done 4 videos and only started 5 weeks ago. One getting 2,300 views, the others getting 100-180... all averaging the same retention despite all being varied by length pretty dramatically
You’re lucky. No matter what I do or try mine is always awful.
After some time and a calculator, apparently half way through all my videos and shorts combined my average audience retention is about 39%
This is one of those statistics that it's important to distinguish between 'average' and 'good' - the average is going to be low because if you're going by every video on youtube, there's going to be a lot of 'just one part', 'clickbait', and 'bad fit' video picks that drag it down drastically - average around 30% is entirely believable, but the goal for "good" should be 75-80% for hyper-niche videos, 60-75% for more broadly consumed videos, and 40-60% for audience ambiguous videos. At least those are the standards I use for looking at my video performance - deviations from that meaning there was either something wrong with the video itself, or something wrong with the way youtube understood the video for distribution.
I make videos at a minimum 10 minutes or longer. I have 21 videos on my channel. The audience retention for any of those videos ranged from 30-50% had 2 at 50.1% a few at 45% and higher
My average is usually below average but I’m working on it :)
Dont worry about percentage viewed. Look at the average view duration (mins) and make that go up

On my Minecraft entertainment videos I get around 60%, on my Minecraft Modding Tutorials it is around 10 to 20% - highly technical tutorials are just not a thing most people will just casually watch, but those that do watch are insanely positive about it 🙂

My video from the other day is getting a 331.0% audience retention, according to analytics.
So far, my videos for Civilization 6 (strategy game) float around 1:15 retention whereas my Rocket League videos is almost 1:30. The fun thing is having two games to build a community from. Shorts have been a core part of learning how to build my channel.

I have some videos that have 99% retention. Those videos are 2~3 min with high production value and fast-moving stories or lists.
Longer videos often get 33% retention.
I doubt any video with less than 100k views have 99% retention 😂 Actually, I have a few videos (not shorts) with more than 1 million views and none get more than 70% retention.
mine is around 30% on long form videos (lately they're around 4-6 minutes long), as for shorts, between 80% and 120% (all are 15sec long). I still have a lot to learn about keeping the attention but im confident i will improve!

@@Phizix then you have to find a way to improve the quality of yohr content, i have developed my own style of editing by "stealing" things i found interesting from others and it works. There is still room for improvement but i have been told that i create high quality content so im happy for that. Keep in mind that there are a lot of people that no matter how great your content is, they still skip around your vid instead of watching it all, maybe you attract more of those people than the ones watching it all

Most of my videos are 50-60%. The oddball gets 30-40%, especially if YT pushes it a lot. My longest videos have a 25% or lower AVD, but they're informational, and I expect that.
Mine is around 15-20% depending on the video. On my newest short video it is 68% what is so weird but makes kinda sense, it's a video under 60 seconds.
For first 20 short videos ,I got 35% to 50%, now from 21st to 40th videos, I am getting 40% to 55%
How long are the videos they took that summary from because it could be related to duration of the video aswell.

I primarily make tutorial and product review videos (I think noting the type of content being made is important) that are on average around 10 minutes long, some shorter some longer, and my typical retention is around 30%.
Mine is around 30% Plus. I think the short duration viewers are non-subscribers who click to see what the videos about and just don't stick around. The ones that stick around to the end of the true subscribers. The more I get recommended to new viewers the short of my duration is.
I think I average around 37-38% to about 45-49% so not great but I’m working hard to improve that

My top 6 ranked long form videos range between 37% to 56% . I'm trying to learn from the analytics what causes the higher ranked videos to have better retention but I can't figure it out. I do know that keeping my intros as short as possible has helped.

All time 30,8% but I experience huge differences among videos. Also the more the algorithm knows about me, seems that this number is going up to 39,1%. Funny thing is the more I focus on retention rate while preparing, during recording and editing, the worse results I get :( How much do you think a small channel like mine, should worry about this? I mean of course you want to work on in if it's low, but usually I have 50-200 views. In this low number, a few viewers can change dramatically the outcome either way...

16%. I do workouts by helicopter (eg land at beach and do a workout). Any ideas what I need to change? I have watched stuff on retention and am trying to integrate it into my newer videos. I learned that my first few seconds should be something besides the thumb nail (a mistake i made on most of my earliest videos). I am trying to include a hook, but not sure why my numbers are so low. Just starting to trying to learn and improve but any advice appreciated.
It's not all about the percentage, is about watchtime, minutes. You can have a 10 or 30-minute video. 30% retention is not the same for both

Wrong. Look at the first stat more closely. Those are 4 specially selected high-performing smaller channels. The Databox study is of a more typical sample of channels. So it's accurate, the first one is not. My retention time is in the Databox range.

For some reason alot of my shorts have a 80% retention even tho I’m a small UA-camr and 2 of my videos even have a retention above 100%

When I first upload my videos (Minecraft content of all sorts), it starts out from 40 to 60 percent. And as more people watch them, the retention rate plummets sometimes to 10 %

I just clicked on a video and read the first paragraph. You should really put that in your about section so newbies like me know what you're channel is about. I like listening to those stories but would have no idea if I wouldn't have clicked, because glitch in the matrix isn't clear to just any viewer.

On a 5-7 minute video it’s around 50% but anything over 10 minutes it drops to 30% but generally gets allot more views the longer the video is??

little effort on cats / birds videos: 80-120%
My retention is 18% and I can’t help but try to understand why it’s so low. I am not too sure I’m going to fast in my editing styles or too slow. But either way my videos are slightly getting more extreme and sometimes expensive. I did a 6 hour gym challenge and I did 25 pounds of weight challenge featuring a rapper. I hope at the end of the year I can get a 50% retention and I also hope that my next video doesn’t kill me.
Ours 40.9 taken over last 6 videos. Some are yravel vlogs, some tips etc. All based around our citreon berlingo micro camper.
About 20-25 procent, I can not find on youtube studio average view duration in procent only in minutes, which is 3 minutes but my videos are all from 8 to 25 minutes so it is hard to say

My retention rate on my good videos is 110-120%. My swipe rate is roughly 60 to 70%, but I did not swipe. The videos only have 3,600 views. What do I need to fix?

My average audience retention rate is 42-63% for a ham radio educational channel. With currently about 720 subs.
Not a particularly good question as if a video initially does well and say has 90% retention it will then be then be sent to a wider and wider audience bringing retention down below 50%
I be doing numbers on short I can get over a hundred but on the longhorn stuff I can usually get 30 to 50
My lowest is around 40 usually and my highest (occasionally) 90s if a video is on a trending topic. Move that window up a bit for shorts. 50-60 average
I make a series going over a game with spoilers and jokes. 30-40% is pretty average for me
I am doing pretty well on my retention, my Average percentage viewed on my channel analytics is 99.9%, I am a UA-cam shorts channel so that might be why. I hope everyone is doing well on their journey and if not keep going It will get better. Don't give up!

If a video is repetitive, has a lot of 'dead' time, built in ad time, or may have parts of interest, I may watch 20-40% of it. If entertaining, tells a story well, and not over 20-25 minutes, I will see 90-100%.
Over 100% on most of my shorts. Im just trying to figure out if i should keep or delete my videos if they go below an average i made up of 75%
for me, my shorts almost all get 100%, and my long forms average 30-40% :) if u want better retention, just study mrbeast, airrack, ryan trahan, or any other big creators

Ouch, looking at the comments im only getting about 2 to 5 percent. :( I really am growing and trying to be more energetic and entertaining but its still super low. Only other idea I have is to add in random fun things to keep attention or edit my camera to like zoom in on me in a good part and do some effects but that does take a lot long to do and edit to get something out. I would likely only get a video out a week with all the extra edits. Ideas would be helpful.
For mine, it is about 50%... irrespective of whether it is a 30sec video or 3min long.
Usually about 32-35% on an average video and as high as 75% on select videos.
i do mostly shorts. most my videos are between 45 - 60 seconds. averages aroudn 70 - 100%
The question is: what's an "average video"... length? Entertainment or information? Averages like this are kinda useless... you've gotta compare against videos like yours to know how you're doing, IMO.
I compose music, so no video, just animated image. I get 45-60%....need to think of some engaging visuals to go with the music!!

Average retention ratio does not mean how long people stick to a video, but the average watch time of all viewers in percentage. The way Dan describes it an average of 50% watch time would mean nobody watches the rest of your video after 50% of the video.

I have ADHD and still manage to finish videos. But doesn't “average” mean the middle ground between people who click off after 1 minute and the ones who stay and watch the whole thing? Also, in some niches, such as mine, watching certain timestamp segments is a thing, so it's pretty common for people to only watch 25% of a video. It's meant to be watched that way. On my UA-cam Shorts, retention is usually below 50%, which feels weird, cuz, Its youtube Shorts... THEY'RE SHORT
My average retention rate is about 4 but if I think about baseball I can make it 7 or 8.
