  • Amanda Goldsmith, Spotted Lanternfly Technician with the Lancaster County Conservation District, is back again to show you how to set up the BugBarrier Tree Band, another tool in controlling spotted lanternfly. This trap has a sticky adhesive facing inward which reduces the chance of wildlife getting stuck. As well, it is another effective tool in trapping adult spotted lanternflies in comparison to the sticky tape. I used insulation padding from meal delivery packaging. Worked remarkably! We tied the badding around the tree bark with string to make sure it stayed. Added the sticky tape facing inward. Then we shook the tree like hell. Now a day later the trees barely had any on them, and hundreds on the tape. And no by catch!

    Amanda, I was trying to remember where I saw the Bugbarrier Tree Band system then came upon this video tonight. This seems like a great strategy; however, I would think that the tape would load up fast in areas of heavy SLF infestations. I've been experimenting with variations on the sticky trap and have been having good success with fly paper that I got from Tractor Supply Company. To prevent wildlife from getting stuck, I have chicken wire around the tape stood off it by about one inch. My next strategy is to install the tape like you show here but to an aluminum channel that will space the tape off the trunk by an inch and with the fiberfill between the channel and tree trunk.

    Nice the adhesive is facing inward so birds and other animals don't get stuck,

    I have a silver maple tree that attracts so many of the SLF adults that these traps would fill up in minutes when the adults are peaking around Labor Day. The nine inch wide Catchmaster bands fill up in a few hours.
    I like the idea, but in my case I would need much wider sticky bands that face inwards; the Catchmaster bands aren’t sufficiently stiff to work when the sticky part is inward facing.

    Hi! Thank you for all the great information and great instructional videos. I am interested in trying this method. Does the cotton fiber stay in place if it rains?

    • @lancasterconservation971
      @lancasterconservation971  2 роки тому

      It does. However, the trap can quickly fill up with bugs so regularly changing it is an essential factor. I think if you kept it up for months, the rain would start to deteriorate the trap.

    How does the Fel t or padding not just fall down the tree. I know you pushed it into the grooves but how does it stay there over time?

    So the materials to create this seemingly very basic trap are like $100? How many years will it take until we have an effective and affordable option to kill these things?

    • @lancasterconservation971
      @lancasterconservation971  2 роки тому

      This is undoubtedly a more expensive trap option. Check out the sticky tape with mesh video for a more cost-effective trapping option.

      No, they hatch from eggs laid anywhere: on trees, fences, rocks, buildings. Then they climb but can fall out of the trees then head back up.

      You could try asking a local nursery or arborist to research this.
      They have more incentive to find a saleable solution than a private citizen.
      I'm not sure what else a small nursery would be doing in October in the northeast US.

    The adults are surprisingly hard to kill with a fly swatter.
    I can hit them square and they will fall down the tree
    apparently dead. But when I come back 5 minutes later
    they are trying to crawl back up the tree again !
    Even pulling a couple of their wings off does not kill them.
    I have begun pulling their 2 front legs off after swatting
    or trapping them and that usually causes their head
    to come off too. Then you know they are definitely dead !

      @@lancasterconservation971 That list is very limited on the mfg website. If this is such a problem and only becoming worse, these kits should be more readily available and much less expensive. Many of the links from the above link you gave have the kits starting at around $45 for 10' ! That is ridiculous for a bit of cotton batting and some sticky tape. There are other alternate methods we have used for Gypsy Moth caterpillars which we would try before purchasing these expensive kits. Again, if this is problem is urgent and will cause much damage to crops and trees, this should be more cost effective if you really think the public is going to help contain the Lanternflies.

      Just buy the screening and make your own next year.
      Put up a bungee cord easonably tight around the tree.
      then fold the screen in half so that is is equally distributed
      around the bungee cord holding it up. Use push pins to hold
      the bottom of the screen against the tree. If the tree isn't
      symmetrical, then use a strip of outdoor insulation to make
      sure the SLF can't get under the screen and circumvent the trap.
      You also need to use some kind of plastic between the 2
      folds of the screen at the bottom to make sure the SLF
      will walk up between the 2 folds of screen and get caught at the top.
      I cut up some plastic milk cartons to do this.
      I used electrical ties to secure the pieces of milk carton to the screen.

    You don't show how this works and why it works. Can't lantern flies "fly" around this barrier We don't have them where I live -yet - but this doesn't explain anything.

    • @lancasterconservation971
      @lancasterconservation971  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Dieter. This trap works as lanternflies naturally climb up trees in both their nymphal and adult stage to feed and later fly. Adult lanternflies can get around any trap whether it is sticky tape, circle trap, etc. because they can fly above the trap. However, you will still catch many lanternflies that climb the tree and get stuck on the trap. There is no research-supported lure at the moment that attracts SLF specifically to any trap so this is just one of our options to help manage SLF. Research on SLF is very new and it takes time to get well-supported management tools. I hope that helps address your concerns.

    It looks like your wasting more than half of the sticky tape...

    • @lancasterconservation971
      @lancasterconservation971  3 роки тому +1

      In practical use, you could probably put the tape a little lower on the cotton padding. However, you don't want it on so little that it falls off. Squirrels/birds are likely climbing over and around it so you want it pretty secure. It is a trial and error to get the trap right for your home.
