Episode 10 of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War continues the bloody clash between Kenpachi Zaraki and Yachiru Unohana, who activates her Bankai! We talked a bit about Unohana's Bankai already, but this episode had a lot going on - what did you think of episode 10 of TYBW?

Unohana has always been one of my favorite Bleach characters. There was something about how everyone was scared of her made me think that there was something more to her.

I like the idea that, since he didn't have an asauchi, Ichigo has been unconsciously tapping into his Quincy powers the entire time to manifest a spirit weapon in the form of a Zanpaktou. That's something no one else could do, so makes sense why Oetsu states Ichigo doesn't understand the gravity of what he's been doing.
I hope we get maybe some flash into zaraki's mind when he does finally activate his shikai showing us what the spirit of Nozarashi actually looks like because Kubo went out of his way to state that Yachiru is actually the spirit for his bankai and not his shikai and that the spirit of nozarashi is an adult woman so I really hope we get to see what she looks like and if she does in fact resemble Unohana i think that would be very beautiful because he was deeply saddened at her death being that she was not only his idol but also mentor and if Nozarashi does take on her form then in at least that way she will always be by his side watching over him figuatively if not literally as she is in hell
So it's like this analogy:
An Asauchi is a blank canvas while a Soul Reaper is the artist.
After lots of practice, the artist manages to make the canvas truly reflect themselves (forming a Zanpakuto/Shikai). The same process for Bankai.
In Ichigo's case, he had no canvas to begin with, all he had at the time were paint and tools. He had been painting in the dark and wasn't clear about his true nature.
So he needs to go on somewhat of a soul-searching journey and only then will he be able to create a new artwork.
That is a perfect analogy.
@Mauro XXI I think this was also explained when Isshin faced off against Grand Fisher.
The hollow turned arrancar said the size of a Zanpakuto shows how much reiatsu/strength one has. Of course as Isshin cuts him down *he* states while it's true a Zanpakuto can reflect the size of your spiritual pressure, Soul Reapers of captain level or above on the other hand are to manipulate the size of their Zanpakuto otherwise they'd be swinging swords the size of Skyscrapers.

I really like the theory of the Shikai spirit of Kenpachi's sword resembling Unohana. The idea that Unohana is such a integral figure to Zaraki, that it's reflected in his very soul, is honestly a very beautiful idea.
I also think that Kenpachi naming Yachiru after Unohona, and Yachiru herself accepting that name, influenced what Kenpachi's Bankai is. He admired Unohona for being an absolute demonic monster with a sword with just straight up power and direct combat, and that's what he becomes when Yachiru gives him his "unnamed" Bankai. I believe the name of his Bankai is, Yachiru.

@@jeepdino7353 he literally looks exactly like the oni from chapter 12 and both have the same black markings. It will be expanded upon in the hell arc. He was thrown out of hell at a young age and why he was naturally able to defeat everything in the rukongai. I mean they are the keepers of hell so they need to be naturally strong. Especially with a whole bunch of captain levels down there
Kenpachi crying was a tear jerker moment he appeared to realize he loved Unohana but she knew all along but Also knew what had to happen

When I saw the latest episode and Oetsu’s introduction and style, I was blown away with laughter. Great vid man
There are some details I noticed that absolutely prove that Zaraki and Unohana “melting” is a metaphor. The background disappears and all that’s heard in the background is the clashing of swords, showing that nothing else matters to them but the fight. Another thing is Zaraki is depicted as a half skeleton, and it’s when he sees Unohana as a full skeleton that he realizes that unlike her, he’s “been asleep this whole time”.

I like the idea of oetsu being like “YEAH EVEN IF WE DO WIN THIS WAR WITHOUT YOU NOT INVITED BACK!”
It’s crazy how Ichigo’s been using an unofficial, jerry-rigged zanpakuto this whole time and still managed to reach top-10 potential in the whole series.

To me it's not that much different from Zaraki's excess power being a lieutenant with a zanpakuto, or Starrk being two in one, exceptions happen to exceptional people. Which makes it no less impressive, Ichigo was beating up people that should have been swordsmen far longer than he'd been alive.
Really makes his performance in the second half of the final arc all the more disappointing, hopefully that's changed in the anime .

10:13 I love how that scene shows a shadow over his eye sort of "hinting" towards that eyepatch that he ends up wearing in the future, along with him lowering his blade, also showcasing how else he decides to restrain his power further.
He is eccentric and goofy but he's a deadly realist warrior when the time comes for it. He goes for the quick kill and makes no excuses, enemies are to be slain on the spot not dueled with. He's the ultimate sword smith and knows when to get serious.
I think the shot of Kenpachi leaving Muken is meant to show he leaves that battle and walks straight into the next invasion. Would be a cool way to show just how strong he really got if he walked out of the Unohana fight straight into Gremmy lol.
He walks away knowing the name of his sword while Ichigo walks away without one. Kind of profound if you ask me considering their connection from the fight they had.
That’s how I perceived it. I like to believe that Unohana was just that powerful that she could take him to Gerald level power
@@D__Cain Unohana was no way near Gerard or gremmy level, she was weaker than kid kenpachi and gerard stomp kenpachi with bankai and i can go as far as to say that gremmy himself can defeat Unohana, literally what she can do if gremmy decided to throw meteoroids on her or dump her into the void of space, she will die horribly.

They’re going to leave this season off on the Uryuu scene 100%. They have to catch us up with Uryuu before this first season is finished. Narratively and structurally it makes the most sense.

What a fantastic episode
I knew something was up w/ Kenny and Unohana during the filler when the captains was making a movie w/ Ichigo. Unohana and Kenny both wanted Ichigo to be in their movie and Unohana punked Kenny out and she used Ichigo. Also the Gotei Invading Arc when the Inaba Kageroza Unohana attacked Kenny in the group fight and he looked shook. I knew from those moments she was a hidden gem.

I think maybe Unohana chose not to heal the scar rather than being incapable of doing so. She is a duelist, so she would have accumulated tons of scars during her lifetime. She hides the symbol of the guilt with her hair, but refuses to say that shame doesn't exist.
Im very pleased with them changing the comment ichigo made towards the zampakutou ladies... It was kinda weird back them and would be even weirder nowadays... Very insightfull

Tommo this episode had one of the most anticipated battles and bankais of all time and you call your video Oetsu, The Blade God! :p it almost feels like trolling :D
Episode 10 was my favorite not only for MY Wife Unohana, but also to see a new Bankai animated. And how the fight felt more like a normal clash of blades instead of something like people throwing nukes at one another ie Naruto Shippuden lol

I was confused too lol. Though I thought it was a follow up from the last analysis splitting the episode in to two parts.
I think the issue is that Kubo trained us on Bankai's being explained to us. So to have one with implied abilities it's making fans scratch their head.
Also, an explanation wouldn't have been appropriate thematically. Yachiru is secretly using her Kaido and Bankai to heal Zaraki until he breaks his subconscious limits. Telling him about her Bankai would be counterintuitive. Though I wish that we got her saying something to the effect of "My Bankai does x, and it will help me unlock his true self" in her head during the battle.
Kubo bartered with time while trying to give us a much extra as possible. The coming battles, flashbacks, and plot points are hefty and will require a lot of attention in order to succeed where the manga failed. Hopefully these small narrative sacrifices will be worth it.
(I don’t know if this was brought up. If it was, I missed it) One detail I’m a bit upset that the anime couldn’t capture was that Unohana and Zaraki were battling the same time that Renji and Ichigo were fighting the ausuchi. And since each training session ended at the same time in the manga, that means that they were also fighting for over 3 days in Muken.
Tommo, open your eyes man. What we are witnessing is Kubo's genius at work. These changes are Kubo's doing 100% and it's BLEACH all over again baby

Unohanas voice change from the beginning of the fight is what got me. The activation is probably one of the best "Bankai"s I've ever heard. I literally cut the audio to make it my notification on my phone.

Unpopular opinion here, but I wasn't really super hyped about Kenpachi vs Unohana, but rather the O'etsu stuff, and while I'm glad nothing was strictly cut, I'm not the biggest fan of the way those moments were paced, and I wanted to see more of Ichigo and Renji's trial of the asauchi in the depths of Ho'ohden. I feel there could have been some trippy visuals and some fun psychological warfare as the asauchi swarm and condemn Ichigo and Renji.
Do you all think that Oetsu knowing that Ichigo is all three and a Soul King candidate that he was warning him to not come back? Knowing what his fate could be if Ichibei had his way?
Uryuu joining the Sternritter/being Yhwach's successor should be the cliffhanger for the first episode of the second course. I think it's too big to just drop at the end of the first part. They gave us new scenes for Uryuu before, so I think we end episode 13 / first course with a new scene in which he will make up his mind saying something like "This is what I must do".
This was another good episode, my favorite part was seeing unohana's extended bankai

Great video as always Tommo. One question that you might cover in next week's discussion: Do you think that the anime might move the second half of 538 and all of 539 to the beginning of next cour, so that the finale would just focus on Ichigo getting his new zanpakuto?

Unohana believes that she is weaker then him because she hasn’t been fighting for such a long time and was bored with it all, I believe both kenpachi’s former and current subconsciously weakened themselves unknowingly.

I believe the last part for the anime will show the continued last lines about the Quincy king in the form of one last post credit scene.
My only issue is that I don't understand why The bleach anime has been restricted when it comes to the number of episodes that it's going to run for. Because it's the main reason for the weird pacing. If they were going to give the Unohana vs Zaraki fight an entire episode, they would have to sacrifice even more content from the manga.
I dont understand the 52 episode cap as well. Besides that, they are doing a stellar job
the way i interpret the scene with Zaraki on top of the pile of bodies is that it's Kubo showing us how strong he really was. he can kill that many people in the blink of an eye since that trope is usually supposed to show us how strong someone is.
If we would've just gotten that extensive flashback of the initial invasion 1k years ago, I think many (myself included) would've been less sour about Unohana being used to just power up Zaraki.
But I'll always adore this fight and one of the reasons it's become one of the most popular fights in BLEACH is the intimacy of it between both these characters. It's similar to the Ulq/Ichigo fight in that regard imo.

Just noticed Ichigo is doing the defeated Yamcha pose after he failed the asauchi test.
I love the idea that it is just one reveal of both him being there and him being the successor. If not that, maybe they will have both reveals during the season. With the initial one being after episode 11. And the successor reveal after episode 13.

Azashiro is no longer in muken he left muken before Quincy invaded the soul society. And about aizen, i dont think he
see this fight happening with his own eyes and since muken is so big it's infinite I am hundred percent sure that this fight taken place somewhere far far away from the place where aizen being held. So no aizen didn't see this fight taking place but he definitely could have sense there spiritual pressure when they were fighting.

Waiting for Everything But The Rain, but I hope differently for the gran finale. Last couple of episodes will come together into one hour special, that means is like having a 14th episode. I see 11th ending with chapter 533, or the scene with Isshin and Masaki, or also end of chapter with Urahara. Then we have 60 min, like 3 episodes, just 9-10 chapters seems too poor to me. If they were regular, 12th would have close the Masaki story, 13th reach The Blade Is Me, but there is still extra time. Best closure is chapter 546, The Last 9 Days. Not only the opening spoiled things up to this point, also gave a path to Uryu's betrayal, and it's more effective as cliffhanger. The season opened with the Quincy King profecy and will end with the same profecy.

Every time I heard "That page or content is totally cut" it hurts me in my heart
I, too fell in love with Unohana's bankai summoning. It is the best one in the show, no questions asked. While I was upset that she had to die at Zaraki's hand now that we know about the Kenpachi legacy, it doesn't bother me as much. I really appreciate how the anime is adding depth to the characters such as Yamamoto and now Zaraki too.
Possible thought on how Tenjiro could have caused Unohana's bankai to be like that. If, somehow, Tenjiro met Unohana before she became Kenpachi perhaps even before she learned Bankai, and taught her about healing teaching her how to incorporate it so that she could fight for longer periods of time that yearning in her soul for a fight to last longer could have been picked up by her sword and incorporated itself in the form of her bankai. Yeah its messy, yeah its a lot of "ifs" but its an interesting thought, and we kind of have evidence to prove that its at least possible since her shikai is based solely around healing, and Kenpachi managed to survive for most of his life without knowing his shikai or bankai.
Thinks about it now, if they were going to move oetsu’s section to here, setting the precedent that whole sections can be shuffled, they could’ve had the whole battle last week and do the palace this week and still be set up for everything but the rain
@mrtommo2304 this is random, would you ever cover a video on the rivalry of Zaraki and Ikkaku. Ikkaku reason for being a shinigami is to catch up and or defeat him. I'd love to hear or watch you analysis on that. 😊
Considering they showed Ichigo with his new Zangetsus it wouldn't surprise me if they ended this first part with him holding them. Otherwise there was no point in showing him in the opening with them. I'm definitely looking forward to everything but the rain. It's one of my favorite arcs in the entire series even though it's so short
I enjoyed the battle, but like you said, I would have preferred them having an entire episode for the battle as well as going into more detail and showing the threat of Unohana’s bankai. After all, this is one of the biggest fights that everyone was waiting for. As well as more details into views from the past. Maybe the fight was so good that the battle seemed short to me. I think I will have to watch it again.
I really hope they end the cour with chapter 543. It makes the most sense since the added scenes with Uryu at the beginning of the season was building up to what happens in this chapter. However it would also be a good way to open cour 2 so whatever they choose it should be a good end regardless. Awesome video Tommo!!😁😁

I'm just surprised Zaraki's zanpakuto spirit is female. Though all things considered I should've expected that considering the back story of yachiru and zaraki. I was just surprised her voice would sound so soft and sweet for someone as rough and hardened as zaraki.
I wish we could have gotten a fight between Unohana and a sterritter where she uses her Banksi! That shit woulda SLAPPED!! I hope they make a bleach game for consoles and PC or make a PVE version of Bankai Unohana for Brave souls cuz the way the portrayed her Bankai in the anime looks like it's SUPER fun to use.
I feel kenpachi being this strong was hinted at in the arrancar ark in the way that Yamamoto said if kenpachi train and was TAUGHT how to truly wield the sword he would be unstoppable mind you the head captain knew who unohana was at the time and what she was capable of and he still said they kenpachi would be unstoppable meaning in terms of POWER kenpachi has the capability to be stronger then Yamamoto at the time MAYBE just the theory how this somewhat foreshadowed

The only thing that would’ve made Unohana’s death even more impactful is if Zaraki tried for a brief moment to use healing kido to save her. Just to show how much he truly valued her and was forced to see that he had to let her go

I got it figure out, Zaraki when he calls his bankai, like everyone else it has a different name than a shikai, so for shikai he says "Drink Nozarashi" and when he goes into bankai, he probably will say "Bankai Yachiru"
@Mauro XXI once he shattered the suppression of his powers he was at Retsu Unohana’s level in bankai, with nothing but his sword and raw power. So you are 100% correct and if you look at the episode he did what Retau did when she was pacing his movements.
i think the blood lake was just foreshadowing for her bankai but actually had no cannon connection
32:07 I think the reason why he left Muken is because of his and Unohana’s initial conversation saying that if they weren’t as powerful as they were they would be down there. Unohana then says that one would leave a kenpachi and the other would die a prisoner. Unohana lost and in doing so died as a prisoner meaning that’s where she would stay Zaraki on the other hand would leave as a Kenpachi to train

Her bankai seems to scream "Warrior intent". You can draw on the saving people aspect, but the other extreme of absolute bloodlust. I think the way of the sword said it inadvertently but I could be reaching lol. Just seemed like she removed all their inhibitions down to the raw level. Who they were as souls.
I miss the analytical fights in the previous arcs. These fights feel so summarised. Both manga and anime.
I honestly think that the anime we are getting after a decade in the waiting is SPECTACULAR from all aspects, and this was another next level episode, both regarrding animation and sound engineering. We all should be happy to enjoy these moments!
I thought the zero division should be super serious. But they did a good balance of having silly stuff but also showing them flip the switch to serious tones.
That also means that Zaraki is the oldest Shinigami in the soul society post tbyw if we go by the anime flashback

That activation scene was blood-curdling.
The fight in general should've taken the whole episode. i think it would've been a tall order to extend the whole current fight for the episode but that could be made a bit longer than it had then the rest could've been the flashbacks being fleshed out to fill out the remainder of the runtime.
This is another kubo thing but i do think they cut corners a bit by not showing backgrounds during the motion of the fights. In demon slayer for example theres a ridiculously full 3d background and that literally carries the entire fight. The animation and choreography of uzui vs gyutaro itself is none too impressive by the standards of the top anime. but the way it interacts with the environment they created makes it arguably the best looking fight of all time.
I know no backgrounds is a kubo thing but i don't think thats why. Since they had the backgrounds for yama vs yhwach and kept the background in the one single shot where it should have been removed which is where yama calls bankai. It looked so much worse with just a bunch of walls and floor tiles behind him. But having a 3d background here would've made it look much better instead of just speedlines. It's unreasonable to expect it but it just shows its not an adaptation quite on the level of the greats so far.
The part where unohana died was the worst part of the fight. Because they did it so abruptly i was surprised when the fight was over. I thought there was going to be more before kenpachi stabs her since it made it seem like they were about to keep going. It's also anticlimactic. My standards are high but i just don't think that the choreography in the kenpachi fight was as good as it could've or should've been.
Personally i don't believe it was that offensive. And especially back in 2013 that was a completely acceptable joke to make about the zanpakuto spirits possibly being men unless you were specifically inside a very LGBT focused community. But i am glad it was changed here. And it was changed. Its not just the subtitles taking liberties the line is genuinely different. It's just better not to offend people where it's not necessary. Now we wait for giselle.
Tekking made a good point about the pacing of this episode, they are really taking advantage of not having to put in any filler since the arc is long completed. If this arc got animated back when it originally should have kenpachi and unohana's fight would have been one episode and we would have gotten more scenes of ichigo and renji fighting the ausuchi.
Eeeeh, the constant use of flashback scenes is egregious padding enough. They OG Gotei scene was great; then they showed it in almost its entirety at least two times since within such a short stretch of episodes. That's even worse than filler, imo.

Mr. Tommo what are your thoughts on the dub? I watch sub and dub because I love myself a little weekend Bleach sandwich. They just got to the end of the first invasion, and I've been pretty impressed with the VA so far. Definitely a step above the og anime
One thing I took away from The Battle is that, because Unohana was alive as a Kenpachi, this prohibited Zaraki from hearing his Zanpakto. Perhaps I'm wrong and this is just the process Kyoraku called it when making the request from Central 46?
Anyone notice how Kenpachi named his presumed other half, his lieutenant, Yachiru after the only person he admired Captain Yachiru Unohana (Retsu)?
hopefully the scar being present in the og gotei 13 episode get fixed on the blu rays if they ever release some
I think the scar is not a mistake, think few hundreds can mean 1100, so this mean this fight happened around the time of the war
